Ira Luck
Ira Luck, 79, of 167 Vann Street, died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at his residence.
Born April 6, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was the owner and operator of Luck's Barber Shop. He was married
to Lueida Luck, who predeceased him.
He was of the Holiness Faith.
Survivors include four sons, Ira Luck Jr. of Newport News, Wayne Luck of Maryland, and Rudolph Luck and Wendell Luck, both of Danville; five sisters, Nora Thornhill, Myrtle Davis and Cordine Lurbge, all of Maryland, and Virginia Saunders and Florence Thornhill, both of Roanoke.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday from Oak Hill cemetery with Rev. Jasper Watkins officiating. Mr. Luck may be viewed from 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home. The family will be in the home, 167 Vann St.
Robert Mayes
Robert McDowell Mayes, 81, of 300 Old Mayfield Rd., Danville, died Friday, March 13, at Danville Regional Medical Center after 10 years of declining health.
Born July 28, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Robert Jackson Mayes and Bessie Florence McDowell Mayes.
He was married
June 5, 1937, to Nellie Turner.
A member of the U.S. Army during World War II, he later worked for Dan River Inc. for 48 years in the Schoolfield Division weave rooms' number 1A, 1B, and 3 as a loom fixer before his retirement. He was an active member of Faith Memorial Baptist Church, where he had served as the pastor's assistant, taught Sunday School, served on the board of trustees, was chairman of the buildings and ground committee, and was a choir member.
He was predeceased by his parents and a son, Bobby L. Mayes.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a sister, Madeline M. Meadows of Chatham; a brother, Alvin H. Mayes of Winchester; 2 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, March 16, by the Rev. Daniel Lackey and the Rev. Bill Adams at Faith Memorial Baptist Church. Internment will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends this afternoon from 2:30-4 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence, 300 Old Mayfield Rd.

Beatrice Moon
Beatrice Patterson Moon, 93, formerly of 115 North Woodberry Ave., died Sunday, March 15, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, after a decline in health of several years.
Born Jan. 20, 1905, in Danville, she was the daughter of William Lee Patterson and Elizabeth Cooper Patterson.
She lived her entire life in Danville. She was a member of the Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church for more than 70 years and was a member of the Chapel Bible Class, Circle #1 and the WCTU.
She was married
on Dec. 23, 1927, to Ernest Whittle Moon, who died on Dec. 30, 1966.
Survivors include two daughters, Frances M. Hardy of the residence, and Dorothy M. Stone of Danville; two granddaughters; three great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and one great-great-grandson.
She was the last survivor of her generation. She was predeceased by her brother, Millard T. Patterson and sister, Tazzie P. Harris.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. Frederick J. Vick and the Rev. John B. McQuarry. Interment
in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence, 115 North Woodberry Ave.
Robert Tickle
Robert "Bobby" Tickle, 43, of 22 Stokesland Ave., died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at 2:45 p.m., at Hyco Lake from drowning as a result of a boating accident.
Born Feb. 23, 1955, in Siler City, N.C., he was the son of George William Tickle Sr. and Flora Wilson Tickle, who survive.
He was a member of Blessed Hope Baptist Church and Poquoson Tribe No. 124 Improved Order of Redmen. He lived most of his life in Florida and Danville. Until becoming disabled in 1995, he was employed as a mechanic.
He was married
to Cynthia Earp Tickle, who survives.
In addition to his parents of Auburndale, Fla., and his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Robert William Tickle of the residence, two sisters, Candace Tickle Moore of Ringgold and Susie Tickle Kirkland of Auburndale; three brothers, George William Tickle Jr. of Pelham, N.C., David Anthony Tickle Sr. of Blanch, N.C., and Carl Lacy Tickle of Ringgold.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Blessed Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Brian Edwards. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence, 22 Stokesland Ave.
Nannie Akins
Nannie Howard Akins, 80, 234 W. James St., died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 22, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Arthur Goins and Edna Graves Goins.
She was married
to Burnest Akins, who predeceased her.
She had been employed by Dan River, Inc., until her retirement.
She was a member of Mother's Board, Missionary and Usher Board, Hostess, Hospitality Committee, Eastern Star Chapter in Danville and Vicinity Usher's Union.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Akins Russell of Danville; two sisters, Amie Motley and Mary Crews, both of Danville; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kentuck Missionary Baptist by the Rev. Jesse Fitz and the Rev. James Stewart. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 708 Mayo St.

Arthur 'Tommy' Christiansen III
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Arthur "Tommy" Christiansen III, 143 Stoneridge Road, died Sunday afternoon, March 15, 1998, at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
Born July 21, 1961, in Washington, D.C., he was a son of Arthur Christiansen and Frances Thurman Christiansen, who survive.
Most of his life was spent in Vienna before moving to Columbia two years ago.
He was a graduate of Radford University and employed by the U.S. Government in the Drug Enforcement Administration.
In addition to his parents of Bradenton, Fla., survivors include a brother, Michael Snead of Florida; paternal grandmother, Margaret Christiansen of Port Charlotte, Fla; and his maternal grandmother, Cora Thurman of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lewis Harris and the Rev. Larry Wells. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Buster Dodson
Buster Brown Dodson, 85, 257 Jefferson Ave., Apt. 9, died Sunday evening, March 15, 1998, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born June 24, 1912, in the Spring Garden community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Row Winston Dodson and Myrtle Owen Dodson.
He was married
to Elsie Gay Saul Dodson, who died May 28, 1995.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and served in France during World War II. He received the Purple Heart medal.
A resident of Danville for most of his life, he worked in construction and farming before retiring.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three brothers, Mitchell Dodson of Semora, N.C., and Glenn Dodson and Vernon Dodson, both of Yanceyville, N.C.; four sisters, Patty Clark of Glenburnie, Md., and Cecile Blair of Danville, Billie Myers of South Boston and Mary Marshall of Crownsville, Md.
In addition to his wife, he was also predeceased by a sister, Nelsie Taylor; and three brothers, Alexandria Dodson, Rodgers Dodson and Newman Dodson.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in Schoolfield cemetery by the Rev. Jack Robertson with military honors performed by American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home.
Charles Heldreth
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Funeral services for Charles Alvin Heldreth, 71, of 36th Ave. North, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at St. Philips Lutheran Church with Pastor Dennis Setzer officiating. Burial will follow in Ocean Woods Memorial cemetery.
He died Sunday, March 15, 1998, at his residence.
Born March 5, 1927, in Bluefield, W.Va., he was the son of Herman Moore and Ollie Gay Vaught Heldreth.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific and after the war attended Bluefield College. He spent most of his life working in the office machines industry, where he was part-owner of Southern Office Machines Company in Danville, Va., for 20 years and later owner of Coastal Business Machines, Inc., in Myrtle Beach until his retirement.
He was a member of St. Philips Lutheran Church.
He was married
to Betty Blanch Blume Heldreth, who survives.
In addition to his wife of Myrtle Beach, survivors include two sons, Larry A. Heldreth and Michael E. Heldreth, both of Dry Fork, Va.; a daughter, Laura Lynn Sawyer of Conway, and five grandchildren.

Ken Poteat Jr.
Raymond Kennon "Ken" Poteat Jr., 51, 720 Vicar Road, died Monday afternoon, March 16, 1998, at his residence.
Born Nov. 14, 1946, in Danville, he was the son of R. Kennon Poteat Sr. and Eunice "Polly" Parrott Poteat, who survive.
On Aug. 12, 1972, he was married
to Faye Motley Poteat, who survives.
A graduate of Dan River High School, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
He attended North Main Baptist Church.
He was a member of VPPA, VPI & SU Alumni Association and the Hokie Club.
For 25 years, he was a probation and parole officer with the Department of Corrections for the commonwealth of Virginia.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his parents, both of Danville, survivors include a son, Raymond Kennon Poteat III of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday at North Main Baptist Church by the Rev. Eddie Davis and the Rev. Ken Clark. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Mabel Robinson
Mabel Williams Robinson, of Danville, died Sunday, March 15, 1998, in Blue Ridge Nursing Home, Martinsville, Va.

will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
Born Aug. 12, 1904, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Aaron Law Williams and the late Mary Cobbs Williams.
She was married
to the late James Edward Robinson Sr. They had two children, the late Barbara Ann Robinson and a son, James Edward Robinson Jr.
She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church for many years. After she married
, she became a member of White Rock Baptist Church to be with her husband.
Surviving are a son, James Edward Robinson Jr. of Martinsville; a daughter-in-law, Linda C. Robinson of Martinsville; a granddaughter, Angel Marie Robinson of Jeannette, Penn.; a great-granddaughter, Haley Maria Robinson of Jeannette, Penn.; four faithful friends of 50 years, Mrs. Myrtle Covington, Mrs. Jessie Coleman, Mrs. Rosa Carter and Mrs. Mildred Gilbert, all of Danville; and a host of loving cousins and friends.
Viewing for Mrs. Robinson will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home, 351 Holbrook St., Danville.

Jacqueline Wimbish
Jacqueline Scarbro Wimbish, 47, 1575 Richmond Blvd., died Friday, March 13, 1998, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born May 28, 1950, in Welch, W. Va., she was a daughter of Charles Lawrence Scarbro and Christine Tolliver Robinson.
She became disabled in 1993 while working in Norfolk and moved back to the Danville and Pittsylvania County area with her uncle and aunt.
She was a graduate of Bramwell High School, Bramwell, W. Va., and Lear Siegler College in Silver Springs, Md.
Survivors include two children, Shawn Wimbish of Vinton and Kimberly Wimbish of the residence; two grandsons; and several sisters and brothers living in Maryland, West Virginia and Ohio.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Chapel Baptist Church, 165 Barrett St., by the Rev. Hayes McConnell.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her aunt and uncle, the Rev. and Mrs. Hayes McConnell of Gretna.
