Hazel Crumpton
Hazel Frix Daly Crumpton, 84, of Roman Eagle Memorial Home, formerly of Winchester, died Monday, March 16, 1998.
Born March 23, 1913, in Norfolk, she grew up in Danville and graduated from Averett College.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Winchester.
She was past president of Women's Civic League of Winchester, past chapter chairperson of American Red Cross and past president of Winchester Community Services Council.
She served as director of Virginia Lung Association and Northwestern Work Shop.
She was a member of Xi Beta Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi and Daughters of American Revolution.
She was married
to the late James R. Daly, who died in 1957. She was later married
to Edward R. Crumpton, who died in 1973.
She worked for Social Security Administration for 25 years. From 1961 until her retirement in 1974, she was district manager of the Winchester office.
She was also predeceased by a son, James R. Daly Jr.; a daughter, Margaret Daly Neal; and four brothers.
Survivors include a brother, Clarence O. Frix of Greensboro, N.C.; a granddaughter, Lucy Neal of Blairs; a great-granddaughter, Jamie Neal. Also a step-grandson, Felix Markham of Durham, N.C. and two step-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and the family will receive friends at 11:30 a.m.
Dorothy Deshazor
Dorothy Womack Deshazor, 66, 134 Warren St., died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 21, 1931, in Danville, she was a daughter of Sol Womack and Mannie Pinchback Womack.
She was married
to Richard Deshazor, who predeceased her.
Survivors include five daughters, Pamela Deshazor Chappell of Danville, Beverly Wharton of Pleasantview, N.J., and Wendy Deshazor of Hampton, Donna Ferguson of Ringgold and Robin Long of Climax; and a sister, Louise Middleton of West Palm Beach, Fla.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Baptist Church by the Rev. Brandon Smith. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Buster Dodson
A graveside service for Buster Brown Dodson, 85, 257 Jefferson Ave., Apt. 9, will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Schoolfield cemetery by the Rev. Jack Robertson with military honors performed by American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.
He died Sunday evening, March 15, 1998, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born June 24, 1912, in the Spring Garden community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Row Winston Dodson and Myrtle Owen Dodson.
He was married
to Elsie Gay Saul Dodson, who died May 28, 1995.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and served in France during World War II. He received the Purple Heart medal.
A resident of Danville for most of his life, he worked in construction and farming before retiring.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three brothers, Mitchell Dodson of Semora, N.C., and Glenn Dodson and Vernon Dodson, both of Yanceyville, N.C.; four sisters, Patty Clark of Glenburnie, Md., Cecile Blair of Danville, Billie Myers of South Boston and Mary Marshall of Crownsville, Md.
In addition to his wife, he was also predeceased by a sister, Nelsie Taylor; and three brothers, Alexandria Dodson, Rodgers Dodson and Newman Dodson.

Dorothy Doll
CHATHAM - Dorothy Mae Pearce Doll, 71, 2076 Fairview North, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at Piney Forest Health Care after two years of declining health.
Born July 10, 1926, in Warsaw, N.C., she was a daughter of Henry Graham Pearce and Mellie Daughtery Pearce.
She worked as a secretary for the United States Navy at the naval base in Norfolk prior to her retirement.
In 1976, she moved to Danville, where she was a member of Salvation Army Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Gammon of Chatham and Brenda A. Doll of Danville; a son, William F. Doll Jr. of Martinsville; and two brothers, Henry Pearce of Bailey, N.C., and Tommy Pearce of Waynesboro, Ga.
She was predeceased by a sister, Christine Dickens.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by Captain Dieter Zimmerer. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Myrtle Matkins
Myrtle Pruitt Matkins, 85, 388 Cedarbrook Drive, formerly of Mt. Holly, N.C., died Monday, March 16, 1998, in Danville.
Born in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Joseph E. and Earla Toler Pruitt.
She was married
to Allie Thomas Matkins, who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Mt. Holly, N.C.
Survivors include two sons, John Edward Matkins of St. Louis, Mo., and Frank Wayne Matkins of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two daughters, Joyce M. Collins of Danville and Patricia M. Killian of Gastonia, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Margie M. Hilderbran Kanipe; a brother, Ollie E. Pruitt; and a sister, Lila P. Chattin.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 1998, at First Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Norman Perkins and the Rev. Tim Young. Burial will be in Hillcrest Gardens cemetery in Mt. Holly, N.C.

Born Jan. 4, 1938, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Georgeanna Johnson.

to William Moore, who predeceased her.
She was employed by Dibrell Brothers for many years.
She is survived by a brother, Phillip Smith Sr. of Durham, N.C.

GRETNA - Oria Patrick, 81, 1565 Renan Road, died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Feb. 2, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John and Kattie Patrick Barbour.
She was married
to Diamond Pannell, who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Airy Baptist Church in Gretna.
She is survived by a foster son, Jeffrey Barbour of Chester, Penn.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Airy Baptist Church by the Rev. R.P. King. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Lula Pearl Wright Merricks, 93, 163 Blair Place, formerly of Route 6, Chatham, died Wednesday afternoon, March 18, 1998, at her residence.
Born March 20, 1904, in Callands, she was a daughter of Thomas William Wright and Nannie Maude Allen Wright.
She was married
to J.H. "Hop" Merricks, who predeceased her.
She was a member of County Line Christian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty M. Arrington of the residence and Ellen M. Rigney of Callands; two sons, Joe E. Merricks of Chatham and Bobby W. Merricks of Callands; a sister, Frances W. Blair of Danville; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, John Merricks, and a grandson.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at County Line Christian Church by the Rev. Robert C. Royal and Bobby Brumfield. Burial will be in County Line Christian Church cemetery.

Clyde Samuel
William Clyde Samuel, 84, 5209 Franklin Turnpike, died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and five days in the hospital.
Born Nov. 14, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Archer Coleman Samuel and Sally Lovelace Samuel.
A life long resident of the Mount Hermon Community, he was a retired farmer.
He was an active member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church.
He is survived by his sister, Christine S. Henderson of Keeling.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Hermon Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Davidson. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Burton Walker
Burton Mack Walker, 135 Nelson Ave., died Wednesday afternoon, March 18, 1998, at his residence.
Born July 24, 1923, in Vernon Hill, he was a son of Buck T. Walker and Gracie Landrum Walker.
He was married
to June Hayes Walker, who died Aug. 29, 1987.
He was retired from Dan River Mills and was a painter.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Troop A 101st Cavalry Reconnaisance Squadron.
He was a member of American Legion Post 325.
Survivors include four daughters, Pamela W. Dooley of Danville, Gina W. Durham of Blanch, N.C., and Robin W. Mimms of Keeling and Hollie W. Ragnor of Ringgold; two sons, Karey D. Walker of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Kenneth M. Walker of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a sister, Beulah W. Hudgins of Danville; four brothers, Charlie L. Walker and Clyde W. Walker, both of Danville, and Roy T. Walker of Dry Folk and B.L. Walker of Chester; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Terry Allen Walker.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday at Townes Memorial Chapel by Daryl Joyce. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery with military honors performed by the American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.
