GIBSONVILLE, N.C. - Sandra Crane Wheeler, 61, of 2063 Cullen Road, died July 19, 2002, at her residence.
Born August 25, 1940, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Earl Swanson and Margaret Moore Crane.
She was married to Jerry D. Wheeler, who survives. She was a retired Registered Nurse and also retired from First Home Federal (C.C.B.) as a licensed caterer.
She is survived, in addition to her husband of the residence and her mother of Greensboro, by one daughter, Lynne Salmons Kerley of Mebane; and one dog, Barney.
The graveside service will be held 4 p.m. Monday at Lakeview Memorial Park with the Rev. Gil Hawks officiating.

Johnny Paniel Carter
DANVILLE, Va. - Johnny Paniel Carter, 68, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Wake Forest Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Born July 7, 1934, in Henry County, he was the son of Onie Carter and Eva Carter.
He was employed at American Furniture Company for many years prior to his retirement.
He was married to Lillie B. Watkins Carter, who predeceased him.
He is survived by five daughters, Vanessa Wilson of Seattle, Wash., Lisa Carter, Marnitta C. Jennings, both of Axton, Audrey Akers of Danville and Trykitta Kellum of Martinsville; six sons, Johnny Carter II, David Lee Carter, Larry Carter, all of Axton, Terrance Carter, Michael Millner, both of Martinsville and Charles Carter of Ohio; three sisters, Adell Carter of Martinsville, Patricia Carter and Oval Carter, both of Axton; five brothers, Jimmy Carter, June Bugg Carter, Albert Lee Carter, all of Axton, William Thomas Carter and Jereal Carter, both of Pa. and numerous grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Jerome Millner.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Sinai Holiness Church, Axton, with the Rev. Bruce Simmons officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Audrey Akers, 314 Clarkson Drive.

James Edward
'Buck' Dixon
DANVILLE, Va. - James Edward "Buck" Dixon, 67, of 509 Madison St., died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 18, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of West Dixon and Rosa Belle Dixon Lanier.
He was a retired employee of Lorillard Tobacco Company and worked most recently as a security guard at Roman Eagle Nursing Home. He was most well-known as a long time cook at the now defunct Charcoal House Restaurant.
He was married to Lorraine Heitt Dixon, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Elaine Bassett of Danville; a foster son, Terry Hiett of San Diego, Calif.; four sisters, Gladys Webb, Mary Walker, both of Danville, Stella Dixon of Blairs and Brenda Burge of Charlottesville; four brothers, Lonnie Dixon of Blairs, Bobby Dixon, Robert Lee Dixon, both of Danville, Thomas Dixon of Chatham and numerous grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Clarence Dixon and Wesley Dixon.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at White Oak Grove Baptist Church, Dry Fork, with the Rev. Edward Pope officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.
A viewing will be held 3-8 p.m. Friday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home.

John Duncan
RINGGOLD, Va. - John Lewis Duncan, 78, of 700 Cedar Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at Piney Forest Health Care Center after one year of declining health.
Born March 8, 1924, in Roxboro, N.C., he was the son of Henry Duncan and Nannie Bell Holt Duncan.
He had lived most of his life in the Newport News area and in Pittsylvania County. He was a retired construction worker. He was a member of Evangel Assembly of God Church in the Mountain Hill community.
He was first married to Betty Willhite Duncan, who predeceased him April 6, 1989. He then married Audrey A. Duncan on March 19, 1990.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a stepdaughter, Robin M. Rosson of Ringgold; five sisters and three step grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Booth Family Cemetery at Kentuck with the Rev. William Mizelle officiating. Interment will follow.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence, located in the Mountain Hill community.

Mollie B. Harris
CALLANDS, Va. - Mrs. Mollie B. Harris, 71, of 2064 Mapleton Drive, Callands, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born in Pittsylvania County, Aug. 10, 1931, she was a daughter of the late Frank Witcher and Mrs. Elsie M. Witcher. She was married to Earl Harris, who predeceased her.
Mrs. Harris was retired from Stanley Furniture Company and was a member of New Life Apostolic Church, Callands, where she served as a member of the Missionary Circle and the usher board.
Surviving are two sons, Bertram Harris and wife, Barbara, of Factoryville, Pa. and Jordan Witcher and wife, Doretha, of Callands; six sisters, Emma Portee and Elsie Witcher, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Clarice Royal (Coleman) of Axton, Dorothy Kidd of Penhook, Jacqueline Robertson (Elder Larry Robertson) of Callands, Hazel Jones (Jacob) of Martinsville; three brothers, Jordan and Frederick Witcher of Chatham and Bishop Charlie Witcher (Brenda) of Callands; a sister-in-law, Nannie Williamson of Symra, Ga.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. from the New Life Apostolic Church by Elder Larry Robertson with interment in the church cemetery.
The family is at the residence of a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Jordan Witcher, 2096 Mapleton Drive, Callands.

James Aneste Kirios
DANVILLE, Va. - James Aneste Kirios, 80, of 460 North Main St., died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 20, 1922, in Danville, he was the son of Aneste Kirios and Agalaia Polites Kirios.
He lived most of his life in Virginia and was living in Danville at the time of his death. He was of the Greek Orthodox faith. He had been disabled since the age of 15.
He is survived by a brother, Nickolos Kirios of Jersey City, N.J. and two sisters, Maxine Toutountis of Jersey City, N.J. and Sofie Diacogiannis of Oceanport, N.J.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Green Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Peter Rexinis officiating.

Marie Marshall
DANVILLE, Va. - Bessie Marie Marshall, 59, of 141 Joplin St., died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after being in declining health for several years and in the hospital for one day.
Born Oct. 22, 1943, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Cleveland Slate and Dora McGregor Slate, who survives.
She had lived all her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She had worked for several years with Dan River, Inc. as a spinner until her retirement due to health reasons. She was of the Christian faith.
She married Lloyd James Marshall on Aug. 5, 1960.
In addition to her husband, of the residence, and mother, of Chatham, she is survived by one daughter, Lisa M. Davis of Danville; two sons, Danny J. Marshall and Anthony Todd Marshall, both of Danville; two brothers, David Slate of Salisbury, Md. and Cleve Slate Jr. of Chatham and seven grandchildren.
The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence of her daughter, Lisa M. Davis, 462 Williamson Road.

George W. McCormick Sr.
RINGGOLD, Va. - George W. McCormick Sr., of 1861 Ringgold Church Road, died Jan. 1, 2003 in the Danville Regional Medical Center after a lengthy decline in health.
Mr. McCormick was born on Feb. 22, 1926, in Ringgold, Va., the son of Oscar Beverly and Stella Evans McCormick. On May 14, 1946, he was married to the former Marguerite Inez Lester McCormick, who survives.
Mr. McCormick owned and operated the Riverside Barber Shop until his retirement in 1984. He also owned and operated the Nor Dan Barber Shop and the Ballou Barber Shop.
He was extremely interested in upgrading and enhancing his profession and was instrumental in getting laws passed through the General Assembly to have all barbers and beauticians licensed by the State of Virginia, as well as barber and beauty shops inspected by the local health departments.
He was appointed by Governor Mills Godwin to serve on the State Board of Barber and Beauticians Examiners for two four-year terms during which he served as its Chairman.
He was an active member of the American Master Barbers Association. Mr. McCormick was also appointed to and served on the Selective Service Board for the City of Danville.
Mr. McCormick was a charter member of the Danville Life Saving and First Aid Crew. He was a life member of the Danville Jaycees, served as its President and received the Outstanding Young Man of the Year Award in 1961. It was during his term as President that the "Penny Parade" which evolved into the "Empty Stocking Fund" was first started to provide toys for underprivileged children as well as the Danville Speech and Hearing Center. Mr. McCormick was a life member of American Legion Post 325 and the Danville Elks Lodge. He worked with the YMCA in the Indian Y Guides, a program for fathers and sons.
Mr. McCormick was a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Navy on the USS Noas in the South Pacific from 1944 to 1946.
Mr. McCormick was an active member of the former Calvary United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Board, the Finance Committee and the Board of Missions. He also worked with Junior High School students and was a Delegate to the United Methodist Church Annual Conference.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by five brothers, E. Leland McCormick, John R. McCormick, Oscar B. McCormick, Frank M. McCormick and Samuel R. McCormick.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three children, George W. McCormick Jr. and wife, Lisa Cunningham McCormick, of Richmond, Kay Lester McCormick of Tampa, Fla. and Sarah Ann Fry and husband, John Andrew Fry, of Charlotte, N.C. Two grandsons, Matthew Kent McCormick and David Keegan McCormick and one granddaughter, Katlyn Elizabeth Fry. He is also survived by one brother, Hugh Thomas McCormick of Danville; two sisters, Sarah E. Hardy and her husband, William Hardy, of Ringgold and Jessie May Lindsey of Kernersville, N.C.
Funeral services will be held at the St. Luke's United Methodist Church on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003 at 2 p.m. by the Reverend Randy Duncan, Dr. David Palmer and Reverend Carl Burger. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park with full graveside honors given by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends at St. Luke's United Methodist Church on Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence.

Lillie Ola Mosely
DANVILLE, Va. - Lillie Ola Mosely, 90, of 302 Greenwich Circle, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born May 25, 1903, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Sallie Martin.
She was married to Deacon Jessie W. Mosely, who predeceased her.
She is survived by four daughters, Luetta Barber, Beulah Williams, Odessa Clark, all of Danville and Priscilla Whitlock of New York City, N.Y.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Gladiola Ferguson and a son, Jessie W. Mosely Jr.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Vance Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Herbert Dickerson officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Clyde Irving Bliss
DANVILLE, Va. - Clyde Irving Bliss, 78, of 251 Crosland Avenue, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in Stratford Health Care Center, after a period of declining health.
Born July 10, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Charles A. Bliss Sr. and Virginia Vernon Bliss, who predeceased him.
Mr. Bliss had lived his entire life in Danville and Pittsylvania County and retired in 1945 from Crane Tire Company. He was a member of the Woodberry Hills Baptist Church, where he had served on the board of deacons, taught Sunday School, was a choir member and served on various church committees. Mr. Bliss was also a member of the American Legion Post #325 and a former member of the Sertoma Club.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army Air Corp in the Pacific theatre.
He was married to Lillie Mae Mills Bliss on Aug. 3, 1946.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Michael Keith Bliss and his wife, Nancy of Danville; a daughter, Pamela Bliss Brown and her husband, William Brown Jr. of Danville; a brother, Charles A. Bliss of Danville; two sisters, Frances Bliss Marshall and Shelby Bliss Robertson of Danville; four grandchildren, Melanie Bliss Ford and her husband, Thomas, Robert Brown, John Bliss and Matthew Bliss, all of Danville.
In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by a brother, Howard N. Bliss.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Lewis Harris, the Rev. Melvin Winters and the Rev. Larry Farrell officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors by the American Legion Post #325.

David Johnson Bray
CASCADE, Va. - David Johnson Bray, 88, formerly of 293 Marlin Road, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003 in Riverside Health Care Center, after being in declining health for the past four years and at Riverside for one month.
Born May 20, 1914, in Henry County, he was the son of John O. Bray and Cora Davis Bray, who predeceased him.
He had lived his entire life in Pittsylvania County, where he was a self-employed logger. He was of the Baptist faith.
He married Hattie McMillion Bray on Dec. 2, 1932.
In addition to his wife, of Danville, he is survived by one son, David Samuel Bray of Danville; four daughters, Hazel B. Lewis of Rowland, N.C., Louise B. Ingram of Virginia Beach, Shirley B. Webb of Clintwood and Elsie B. Powell of Cascade; 13 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one son, Darryl Wayne Bray; three brothers, Edgar Bray, Joe Bray and Lewis Bray; one sister, Mollie Bray; and one granddaughter, Patty Williams.
The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Bray Family Cemetery with the Rev. Gilmore Hundley officiating.
