Edward Haar
Edward E. Haar, 72, 218 Astor Court, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center.
He was born in Danville on Dec. 5, 1925, the son of George Walter Haar and Etta Butcher Haar.
He was married
on Oct. 12, 1946, to Adelene Scarce Haar, who survives.
He was a graduate of Schoolfield High School. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving in World War II from 1943 to 1946.
He was employed by the Register and Bee prior to being employed as the Danville real estate assessor for many years before retiring.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Debbie Haar Yancey and son-in-law, R. Lee Yancey of Danville; two sisters, Ruby H. Bishop of Chatham and Helen H. Duffy of Durham, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Robert, Angela and Jessica Yancey, all of Danville.
He was predeceased by a brother, George Walter Haar Jr.; and a sister, Mary H. Owen.
A graveside service will be conducted Thursday, March 26, 1998, at 11 a.m. in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Levi Stroud. Military graveside honors will be given by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his daughter, 323 Whittington Drive.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church or the Danville Life Saving Crew.
Glenn Slate
Funeral services for Glenn Robert Slate, 83, 4 Holcomb St., will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Dan River Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Kenneth Key and Elder Haywood Wray. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He died Monday afternoon, March 23, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 9, 1914, in Colewood, W. Va., he was the son of Festus S. Slate and Parry Slate Slate.
He was married
to the former Elsie Gordon, who survives.
A resident of Danville for most of his life, he was retired from Danville School Board Maintenance.
He was a member and deacon of Dan River Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Barbara S. Taylor of Danville; a sister, Margie Thompson of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Hattie 'Marge' Cooke
MARTINSVILLE - Hattie Margeria "Marge" Cooke, 88, 831 Hundley St., died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born Nov. 23, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Burch Cooke and Sallie E. Williams Cooke.
She was retired from E.I. DuPont.
She was a member of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church in Martinsville.

Martin Dixon Sr.
Martin Irvin Dixon Sr., 86, 580 Inman Road, died Tuesday evening, March 24, 1998, at his residence after four years of declining health.
Born Oct. 12, 1911, in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Peyton Dixon and Laura Bishop Dixon.
On March 25, 1930, he was married
to Verna Freeman Dixon, who survives.
He spent most of his life in the Schoolfield and Brosville communities.
He was a member of Riveroak Church of God, and was a charter member of Brosville Community Fire Department, where he received the 1984 Service Award.
He received Brosville Ruritan Club Presidents Outstanding Ruritan Award in 1968, and was Ruritan of the Year at the Brosville chapter.
He retired from Dan River, Inc., 4B Weave Maintenance, after 41 years of service.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, Glen R. Dixon and Jimmy R. Dixon, both of Danville, Otis F. Dixon of Hickory, N.C., and Martin I. Dixon of Pelham, N.C.; two daughters, Margaret Alees Dixon Robinson of Brosville and Nancy Dixon Moore of Danville; 15 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by four sisters and five brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Tim Nuckles. Burial will be in the Dixon Family cemetery in Brosville.

Ruby Ranson
Ruby Cameron Woodall Ranson, 83, died Tuesday night, March 24, 1998, at Health South Medical Center in Richmond.
Born Dec. 27, 1914, in Danville, she was the daughter of Thomas M. Cameron and Lula Evelyn Scarce Cameron.
She was a graduate of George Washington High School, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
She was also a member of Bluestocking Book Club, Beverstone Garden Club, Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History and the Danville Historical Society.
She was employed for 27 years by Selective Service System and served as executive secretary of Local Board 94, Danville, before retiring in 1976.
She was married
to Robert Earl Woodall, who died in 1972. On Jan. 1, 1979, she was married
to Robert Graham Ranson, who survives.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Judy Post of Altadena, Calif.; and three stepsons, Larry LaClair, Gary LaClair and Richard LaClair, all of Richmond.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Jack Heinsohn.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home.
Ray Haskins
GRETNA - Charlie Ray Haskins Sr., 37, 1161 Weatherford Drive, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998.
Born June 14, 1960, in Danville, he was a son of Barbara Crews Haskins of Gretna and the late Charlie Samuel Haskins.
He was a mechanic.
In addition to his mother, survivors include two sons, Charlie Ray Haskins Jr., of Altavista and Larry Ray Haskins of the residence; a daughter, Jennifer Nicole Haskins of Danville; his wife, Rosemary Bowen Haskins of Hillsville, N.C.; a brother, Clay Haskins of Rustburg; and two sisters, Wanda Wood of Motley and Alice Faye Myers of Sandy Level.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home by the Rev. Bert Johnson. Interment
will be in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his mother, Barbara Haskins, 1161 Weatherford Drive.
Emma Watson
Emma B. Watson, 73, Heritage Towers, Apt. 403, died Wednesday morning, March 25, 1998, at N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Born Sept. 2, 1924, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Willie Barley and Celestia Calvin Barley.
She was a member of Woodmen of the World Fraternity, and also was of the Baptist faith.
She worked as a waitress until her retirement.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Hobbs of Danville and George T. Hobbs of Ringgold; a daughter, Emma Hughes of Danville; two brothers, B.T. Barley of Keeling and Hubert Barley of Bristol, Conn.; a sister, Loraine Wilson of the Laurel Grove community; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Mildred B. Tomer.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Wayne Kennon. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Virginia White
Virginia Mundy White, 82, 131 Rosedale Court, died Tuesday night, March 24, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Oct. 10, 1915, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Alexander C. Mundy and Laura Goodson Mundy.
She was married
to Thomas B. White, who survives of Danville.
She spent most of her life in Danville, and was retired from Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company.
She was a charter member of Rivermont Baptist Church.
She was the last surviving member of her generation.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jack Waddell and the Rev. Richard Cobb.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 131 Rosedale Court.

Gus Soffriti
Gus Soffriti, 85, 138 Canterbury Road, died Monday, March 23, 1998, at The Brian Center of Durham, N.C.
Born Jan. 27, 1913, in Plymouth, Mass., he was the son of Gaetano Soffriti and Ernesta Pirani Soffriti.
In 1940, he was married
to Frances Bledsoe Soffriti, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville. He was a charter member of Tuscarora Country Club. He was also a member of V.F.W. and the D.A.U. and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He was a graduate of the University of Alabama, where he played football. He was an outstanding athlete, playing baseball for Danville Leafs and professional football.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Third Division, which traveled through Italy to the shores of southern France, where he was wounded.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, James Mason Soffriti of Virginia Beach and Peter Steven Soffriti of Danville; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 3:30 p.m. today in Mountain View cemetery by Father David V. McGuire.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
