Lucy Coles
HAMPTON - Lucy W. Coles, 94, formerly of Danville, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, in Hampton.
She was a former member of Camp Grove Baptist Church before moving to Hampton, where she became a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Elaine Roberts of Hampton and Ruth Easley of Philadelphia; a sister, Sarah Grey of Baltimore; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Camp Grove Baptist Church on Bradley Road by the Rev. Willie Toomer. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home.
Sgt. 1st Class John Conner
STEILACOOM, Wash. - Sgt. 1st Class John Samuel Conner, 62, 61 Ira Light St., died Monday, March 23, 1998, at Medigan Army Hospital.
Born May 14, 1935, in Halifax County, Va., he was a son of Alfred Conner and Willie Fuller Conner.
He was married
to Deana Conner, who survives.
He attended Ebenezer Mennonite Church.
He was retired from Ft. Lewis Army Base of Steilacoom, Wash., after 22 and a half years. He served in Korea, Vietnam and Germany.
In addition to his wife of Steilacoom, survivors include a son, Larry Conner of Maryville, Wash.; three daughters, Ann Martin of Alton, Va., and Connie Glenn of Germany and Carolyn Wright of Lakewood, Wash.; two brothers, Harris Conner of Richmond, Va., and Paul Conner of Mt. Airy, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by a daughter, Romy Conner; five sisters, Etta, Mary, Nannie, Ora and Annie Bett; and three brothers, Walter, Roy and George Conner.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home, South Boston, Va. Burial will be in Ebenezer Mennonite cemetery with military rites.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of Ricky and Ann Martin, 15060 Philpott Road.
Hattie 'Marge' Cooke
MARTINSVILLE - Hattie Margeria "Marge" Cooke, 88, 831 Hundley St., died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born Nov. 23, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Burch Cooke and Sallie E. Williams Cooke.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Dewey, Turner, Clarence and Woodrow Cooke.
She was retired from E.I. DuPont.
She was a member of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church in Martinsville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at the chapel of Norris Funeral Services in Martinsville by the Rev. Clarence Reaser of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
Lewis Dodson
ALTON - Lewis Moore Dodson, 89, 2087 Melon Road, died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at his residence.
Born June 17, 1908, in Halifax County, he was a son of Howard E. Dodson and Mabel Moore Dodson.
He was married
to Alice Douglas Dodson, who survives.
He was a member of First Crossroads Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of Alton, survivors include a daughter, Frances D. Sisco of Richmond.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Branch Dodson, Howard Dodson Jr., George Dodson and Melvin Dodson.
A graveside service will be conducted 3 p.m. today in First Crossroads Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Kenneth Williams.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 2087 Melon Road in the Turbeville community.

Richard Irby
DRY FORK - Richard Nelson Irby, 53, 13848 Franklin Turnpike, died suddenly Thursday, March 26, 1998, at his residence.
Born Jan. 18, 1945, in Martinsville, he was the son of the late Woodrow N. Irby and Daisy Adkins Irby, who survives.
On Oct. 10, 1968, he was married
to Rita Wells Irby, who also survives.
A resident of Pittsylvania County for most of his life, he graduated from the former Whitmell High School, and he attended Danville Community College and the University of Maryland.
He was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., in maintenance as a mechanic. He also farmed.
He was a member of Swansonville United Methodist Church and the National Rifle Association.
He was a former Boy Scout Troop Leader.
During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a jet aircraft engine mechanic.
In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Danville, survivors include a son, Steven W. Irby of Dry Fork; a daughter, Kimberly Irby Wyatt of Dry Fork; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Linwood Daniel with military honors by the American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence of his mother, Daisy A. Irby, 178 Westminister Court, Danville.
Baby Jasmine Jackson
SOUTH BOSTON - Jasmine Monique Jackson, 100 Robinson Court, died Monday, March 23, 1998, at University of Virginia Medical Center at the age of two.
Born Feb. 8, 1996, she was the daughter of Janine Jackson, who survives.
In addition to her mother of the residence, survivors include her maternal grandparents, Willie Jackson and Mary Jackson of Nathalie; her maternal great-grandmother, Verta C. Scott of South Boston; and her maternal great-grandfather, Jesse Claiborne of South Boston.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Christian Tabernacle Baptist Church by the Rev. L.S. Otey. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Arthur Keene
Arthur L. Keene, 56, 896 Monroe St., died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 11, 1941, in Danville, he was a son of Barbara Keene, who survives.
He was married
to Sharon Keene, who also survives.
He was disabled.
In addition to his wife of Danville and his mother of Columbus, Ohio, survivors include two sons, Timothy Keene of Danville and Aaron Keene of Savannah, Ga.; two daughters, Sharon Keene and Lolita Keene, both of Danville; a brother, Fred Keene of Columbus, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel by Bishop William Waddell. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
There will be a viewing from 4-8 tonight at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends at the residences of 648 Franklin St., and 869 Stokes St.
Family members are asked to meet at Franklin Street at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Pauline Majors
SOUTH BOSTON - Pauline Whitlock Majors, 59, died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
She was born March 9, 1939, in Halifax County.
Survivors include her husband, Henry Majors of South Hill; a son, Gordon Coleman Whitlock of South Boston; four brothers, Vennie Whitlock, Maynard Whitlock and Thomas Whitlock, all of South Boston, and Willie Whitlock of Petersburg; and a grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at White Oak Grove Baptist Church in Sutherlin by the Rev. John Howard and the Rev. Jefferson Goode. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The remains will lie in state an hour prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her brother, Vennie Whitlock, 4212 East Hyco Road.

James Merricks
PORTSMOUTH - James Abner "Jack" Merricks, 80, died Thursday, March 26, 1998.
A native of Danville, he was retired from Norfolk Naval Supply Center.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and DAV Chapter 22. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Merricks; a daughter, Faye "Jackie" Siviter of Hayes; a son, Freddie Merricks of Chapel Hill, N.C.; a sister, Doris Uzmann of Conway, S.C.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday at Loving Funeral Home Churchland by the Rev. Philip J. Parker.
Burial will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in Danville Memorial Gardens in Danville.

Sallie Snead
SCOTTSBURG - Sallie Throckmorton Snead, 94, 8154 James D. Hagood Hwy., died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at Twin Oaks Nursing Home.
Born Sept. 14, 1903, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Walter Throckmorton and Lottie Whitlow Throckmorton.
She was married
to Carl Raymond Snead, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Clover Baptist Church for 60 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Sarah S. Weston of Chase City and Mary S. Parks of Scottsburg; two sons, Raleigh A. Snead of Clover and George C. Snead of Richmond; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Tom Walker. Burial will be in Clover cemetery.
The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Mary Parks, 8154 J.D. Hagood Hwy.
Jacqueline Sparks
ALTON - Jacqueline Denise Sparks, 39, 1050 Sparks Trail, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville after a lengthy illness.
Born Jan. 6, 1959, in Dunkirk, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Albert Sparks and Louise Pointer Sparks, who survives.
She was educated in the public schools of Halifax County and at Danville Community College.
She was a member of the Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Shecorie Conley of the residence; a son, Delvin Conley of the residence; a sister, Wendy Hobbs of Powhatan; and four brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at the Greater Brandon Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Alton by the Rev. Dr. H.R. Surgeon. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
