Born Aug. 31, 1901, on a tobacco farm near Callands in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late William Otey Allen and Grace Arnn Allen.
In 1919, he became associated as a bookkeeper with the Chatham Savings Bank. When that institution failed in 1930 during the depression, he continued to work for the bank's receivers. On Sept. 12, 1931, a new financial institution called the Bank of Chatham opened for business.
In 1943, he was elected president of the Bank of Chatham and presided over the institution until, under his guidance, it was acquired in 1980 by First and Merchants. The bank later evolved into branches of Sovran, Nations Bank and finally, First Citizens.
For many years after his retirement in 1980, he kept a small office at the bank's building at the corner of Main and Bank streets in downtown Chatham.
Known as a friendly man, generous with anyone asking his counsel, he advised hundreds of people over six decades on matters concerning their investments, taxes and estates. He was also known for his common sense advice on nearly any matter.
An elder in the Chatham Christian Church, he was a past officer of the Modern Woodmen of America, the Chatham Chamber of Commerce, Pittsylvania Tuberculosis Association, the American Red Cross, the Pittsylvania Industrial Development Association and the Chatham Investors Club.
In 1964, Governor Albertis Harrison named Mr. Allen to the Virginia Board of Vocational Rehabilitation.
Twice over the years, he was given the county's Outstanding Citizenship Award. Mr. Allen, who went to elementary and high school in Callands, took night classes at Hargrave Military Academy. He also studied at the National Business College in Roanoke and took courses in banking and finance from LaSalle Extension University.
In 1986, he was given the Distinguished Alumnus Award by Hargrave Military Academy, and later, in 1991, he was named by Hargrave as its outstanding alumnus.
In addition to his wife and stepson, he is survived by two step-grandchildren, Melissa Joy Browning and Benjamin Earl Allen, both of Richmond; a nephew, Rogers Motley of Florence, S.C., as well as one great-niece, Rachel Ann Allen.
Mr. Allen's first wife, Ora Motley, whom he married
