Elizabeth Gibson
CHATHAM - Elizabeth Gertrude Gibson, 70, 11880 Anderson Mill Road, died Monday, March 30, 1998, at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born July 28, 1927, she was a daughter of Homer Gibson and Bessie Rigney Gibson.
She was a member of Oak Ridge Christian Church.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by W.M. Bassett Furniture Co. in Martinsville for 30 years.
Survivors include two sisters, Virginia G. Adkins and Rebecca G. Walker, both of Chatham; and two brothers, Homer Gibson of Callands and Oakley Gibson of Chatham.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. at Oak Ridge Christian Church by Minister Kenneth McFarthing and Minister J.D. Hunt III. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Christian Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the church, and other times at the residence of Virginia and Richard Adkins, 3533 Greenpond Road, Chatham.

Howard Lewis
Howard J. Lewis, 73, of 159 Greenwich Ave., died Saturday evening, March 28, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health of several months.
Born July 7, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Elijah Henry Lewis and Hattie Hamilton Shaw Lewis.
He retired from the Danville Fire Department on July 1, 1984, as a Captain after 34 years of service with the fire department. He also worked at Barker Funeral Home Inc., until his health failed. He was a member of Tuscarora Golf Club, Woodmen of the World, Redmen No. 124, and American Legion Post No. 325, where he was past athletic director for more than 10 years. He was also a member of American Legion Bowling League.
He was of the Baptist Faith.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, 267th Sep. Coast Artillery Bn. (H.D.)
He was married
on March 18, 1950, to Doris Barbour Lewis, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include his son, Ronald L. Lewis of Woodstock, Ga.; two brothers, Edward S. Lewis of Danville and Earl R. Lewis of Providence, N.C.; three sisters, Ruby Watlington, Verna Lewis and Rebecca L. Cundiff, all of Danville.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Elwood Lewis and Arthur Lewis.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. John Gentry. Burial in Highland Burial Park with graveside military honors by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 159 Greenwich Ave.
Eva Long
Eva Gauldin Long, 83, 285 Long Circle, died Sunday evening, March 29, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health since January of 1995.
Born Jan. 3, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Edward L. Gauldin and Martha Sue Hall Gauldin.
She was married
to Claude "Boots" Long, who died April 25, 1987.
A resident of the Brosville community for most of her life, she was a homemaker and a member of Brosville United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Hugh Edward Long and William Allen Long, both of Brosville; two daughters, Regina L. Lynch and Gail L. Dalton, both of Brosville; four sisters, Minnie Samuels of Danville, Madie Crutchfield of South Hill and Virgie Dix and Claudia Crowder, both of La Crosse; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by five sisters, Nora Harris, Daisy Daniel, Mary Hale, Hallie Arrington and Carrie Crutchfield; a brother, Calvin Gauldin; and a half brother, Willie Wray.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brosville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Richard McDowell. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence in the Brosville community.
Mrs. C.B. Phillips
LYNCHBURG - A funeral service for Ida Early Phillips (Mrs. C.B. Phillips) will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jackson Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Willie Butler officiating. Interment
will be in Forest Hill Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
Survivors include two daughters, Irish Phillips and Chandois Phillips.

Anderson Scott
GRETNA - Earnest Anderson Scott, 80, 3761 Rockford School Road, died Monday, March 30, 1998, at his residence.
Born Feb. 19, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Chesley Martin Scott and Virginia Glenn Scott.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Charlie Coleman Scott and Virgil Marshall Scott.
He was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church. He was retired from Universal Electric and farming.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie Giles Scott of the residence.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Elder Melvin Shelton, Elder H.P. Summers and the Rev. R.G. Rowland. Interment
will be in Gretna Burial Park.

John Doss Sr.
SOUTH BOSTON - John Richard Doss Sr., 45, 1222 Noblin Ave., died Tuesday, March 31, 1998.
Born Nov. 23, 1952, in South Boston, he was the son of Herbert Thomas Doss and Virginia Rickman Doss, who survives.
He was married
to Cynthia Meade Doss, who also survives.
In addition to his wife and mother, both of South Boston, survivors include two daughters, Michele Doss Barnett and Katrina Doss, both of Danville; a son, John Richard "J.R." Doss Jr. of South Boston; two sisters, Grace D. Williamson of Wilmington, N.C., and Jeanette D. Shull of South Boston; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Horace Murray. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.

Frances Estes
Frances Carroll Crute Estes, died Sunday, March 29, 1998.
Born Feb. 5, 1920, in Buckingham County, she was a daughter of William Gannaway Crute and Trent Pratt Crute.
She was predeceased by her husband on Dec. 14, 1981.
She was a graduate of Chatham Hall in Chatham and Averett College in Danville.
A resident of Staunton from 1953 until 1997, she was living with her son, William Estes, in Chesterfield County at the time of her death.
During her years in Staunton, she was a long-time member of St. John's United Methodist Church, where she served as church secretary and a member of the board.
Survivors include a sister, Florence Moseley Crute Batiuk of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sons, William Gannaway Estes and John Swanson Estes, both of Chesterfield County; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Lorna Hubbard Crute Kernodle and Hattie Gannaway Crute McManus.
A funeral service was conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at St. John's United Methodist Church by the Rev. Donald Fridinger and the Rev. Samuel Stanley. Burial was in Augusta Memorial Park.

John Francis
John Clifford Francis, 70, 501 Washburn Drive, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at his residence after two months of declining health.
Born April 25, 1927, in Danville, he was a son of James Howard Francis and Bertha Jones Francis.
He was married
to Katherine Ruth Worley Francis, who died in January 1989.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He lived his life in Danville and in Greensboro, N.C.
In January 1995, he retired from Cone Mills in Greensboro, N.C., where he worked as a boiler operator.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include three daughters, Kathy F. Thornton of the residence and Vicki Marie Hall and Patricia Ann Lloyd, both of Reidsville, N.C.; five sisters, Iris Hankins of Danville, Ruby McNeil, Joan Wray and Irene Gammon, all of Blairs, and Betsy Thomas of West Virginia; a brother, Red Francis of Danville; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was also predeceased by a brother, Bill Francis.
Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete at this time.

Earle Garrett Jr.
Albert Earle Garrett Jr., 88, formerly of 325 Linden Drive, died Monday, March 30, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Sept. 25, 1909, in Stoneville, N.C., he was a son of Albert Earle Garrett Sr., and Mattie Sue Webb Blackwell Garrett.
On March 29, 1929, he was married
to Evelyn Hull Steele Garrett, who survives.
On Oct. 25, 1925, the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 5, Main Street Methodist Church, held a special meeting to present Mr. Garrett with the first awarded Eagle Scout Badge in the city.
In 1926, he graduated from Danville High School. In 1929, he received a Bachelors of Arts degree from the College of William and Mary, where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. In 1933, he received the Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He began to practice law in Danville in 1933 with the firm of Harris, Harvey & Brown. He continued to practice until his health caused him to retire in 1992.
In 1942, he entered the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant junior grade, working in naval intelligence. He continued to serve in the United States Naval Reserve, retiring as a commander.
He served as naval aide-de-camp to four Virginia governors, William M. Tuck, Thomas B. Stanley, J. Lindsay Almond Jr., and Albertis S. Harrison.
Beginning in February 1945, he served as director and attorney for Mutual Savings and Loan Association, and later as president and chairman of the board.
He also served as vice president and director of Danville Finance and Loan Corporation of Danville.
He was a councilman for the city of Danville from 1946 to 1948, and later served as a member of Zoning Board of Appeals and Danville School Board.
On July 1, 1992, he was presented with a 50-year pin from Roman Eagle Lodge 122 A.F. & A.M., where he was a 32nd degree Mason.
He was a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, where he served on the board of stewards. He was a former member of Danville Rotary Club, the Young Men's Club, the Danville Golf Club and the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas Blackwell Garrett and John Walton "Jack" Garrett; three sisters, Anne Elizabeth Garrett Penn, Frances Webb Garrett Williams and Alice Marie Garrett Anderson; and a son, Thomas Blackwell Garrett II.
In addition to his wife of Stratford House, survivors include two sisters, Ruth Coleman Garrett Adkins of Salem and Mary Wortham Garrett Glidewell of Danville; a brother, William Allan Garrett of Danville; a son, Albert Earle Garrett III of Danville; three daughters, Clara Steele Garrett Fountain and Evelyn Hull Garrett Bowyer, both of Danville, and Carolyn Coleman Garrett Bouldin of Winston-Salem, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jay F. Ashby.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, Albert Earle Garrett III, 129 Wilton Ave.

Coleman Merricks
Clarence Coleman Merricks, 80, 2657 Sugar Tree Church Road, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at his residence after two and a half years of declining health.
Born May 5, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Roy Merricks and Ethel Riddle Merricks.
On Sept. 16, 1938, he was married
to Frances Susan Carter Merricks, who survives.
He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, where he served as a past deacon, Sunday school teacher and as a layman. He was a member of the citizens of the church.
He had lived his entire life in Danville.
After 43 years of service, he was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc., where he worked as a loom fixer in No. 1 B weave, Schoolfield Division.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Nancye M. Jones of Hilton Head, S.C., and Denise M. Hudson of Greenville, N.C.; a son, Joseph Coleman "J.C." Merricks of Burlington, N.C.; four sisters, Chaney M. Gray, Bernice M. Clayton and Betty M. Stokes, all of Danville, and Evelyn M. Davis of Pensacola, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Mozelle McKenzie, Mildred Shelton and Colleen Hancock; and a brother, Bill Merricks.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Baptist Church by the Rev. Ross L. Range Sr., and the Rev. Daryl S. Joyce. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
