ALTON - Laline Bates Adkins, 62, 1106 Hudson Drive, died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
Born April 29, 1935, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Frank Thornton Bates and Mary Jones Bates.
She was married
to Carroll Lee Adkins, who survives.
She was a member of Glenwood United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
In addition to her husband of Alton, survivors include two sons, Randy Carroll Adkins of Mechanicsville and Douglas Thornton Adkins of Alton; two brothers, Addison Oliver Bates of South Boston and Kenneth Bates of Cumberland; two sisters, Diane B. Austin of Scottsburg and Brenda B. Powell of South Boston; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday at Glenwood United Methodist Church by the Rev. Michael Teixeira and the Rev. Kenneth Williams. Burial will be in the church cemetery in South Boston.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home, South Boston, and other times at the residence.
John Francis
John Clifford Francis, 70, 501 Washburn Drive, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at his residence after two months of declining health.
Born April 25, 1927, in Danville, he was a son of James Howard Francis and Bertha Jones Francis.
He was married
to Katherine Ruth Worley Francis, who died in January 1989.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He lived his life in Danville and in Greensboro, N.C.
He retired from Cone Mills in Greensboro, N.C., where he worked as a boiler operator.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of VFW Post 647 and a master Mason and member of Roman Eagle Lodge 122 A.F. & A.M. of Virginia for 37 years.
Survivors include three daughters, Kathy F. Thornton of the residence and Vicki Marie Hall and Patricia Ann Lloyd, both of Reidsville, N.C.; five sisters, Iris Hankins of Danville, Ruby McNeil, Joan Wray and Irene Gammon, all of Blairs, and Betsy Thomas of West Virginia; a brother, Red Francis of Danville; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was also predeceased by a brother, Bill Francis.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Larry Gravett. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial cemetery in Greensboro, N.C.
Visitation will follow the memorial service at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence, 501 Washburn Drive.
Roger Herndon
PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Roger Arnn Herndon, 73, died Sunday, March 29, 1998, at The Medical Center in Columbus.
Born March 19, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of Mary Elizabeth Herndon and Harvey Johnson Herndon.
He was married
to Mary McGee Herndon, who survives.
He had lived in Pine Mountain for six years and was a member of St. John United Methodist Church in Columbus.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
During his retirement, he worked part-time at Day Butterfly Center of Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain.
In addition to his wife of Pine Mountain, survivors include two daughters, Vickie Herndon Isley of Burlington, N.C., and Robin Herndon Williams of Columbus; a son, Roger Lee Herndon of Columbus; a sister, Elaine Satterfield of Danville, Va.; a brother, George Melvin Herndon of Winterville; and five grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Danville Memorial Gardens, Danville, Va., by the Rev. Alvin Horne, pastor of Friendship United Methodist Church in Burlington, N.C.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, Danville, Va., and other times at the residence of John and Nancy McGee, 128 Dryerwood Place, Danville, Va.

SOUTH BOSTON - Lloyd Byrd Link, 70, 129 Glendale Drive, died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Oct. 11, 1927, in Halifax County, he was a son of Henry Link and Lois Crawley Link.
He was married
to Mamie Lee Link, who survives.
He was a member of Mayo Grove Baptist Church.
He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four daughters, Jessie Link, Jean Gomes, Doretha Kirby and Gladys Strange, all of South Boston; two sisters, Edna Bowman and Vanessa Murphy, both of Alton; a brother, Henry Link of Alton; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Mayo Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. A.E. Darrington. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Jerene McCain
Jerene Knaack McCain, 83, 245 April Lane, died unexpectedly Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at her residence.
Born May 9, 1914, in Prospect, she was a daughter of Frank William Knaack and Ada Mae Lane Knaack.
She was married
to William Preston McCain Jr., who died in 1981.
A resident of the Danville area for most of her life, she was a retired bookkeeper, having worked at the Farmers Feed Mill and Danville Lumber Company.
She was a member of West Main Baptist Church and the First Day Adventist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Helen Bass Turner of the residence; a stepson, Woodrow P. "Woody" McCain of Martinsville; a brother, Frank L. "Vernie" Knaack of Louisville, Ky.; a sister, Irene K. Flora of Greensboro, N.C.; two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Bruce Wilson and Pastor Edmund M. Komorowski.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Saturday and other times at the residence, 245 April Lane.

GLEN ALLEN - Kathryn Dale Moorefield, 40, 2701 Indale Road, died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at the Medical College of Virginia.
Born Jan. 26, 1958, in South Boston, she was the daughter of Watt J. Moorefield and June W. Moorefield, who survive.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of South Boston.
She was a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and of Longwood College, where she was a member of Kapa Delta sorority.
In addition to her parents of Scottsburg, survivors include a brother, Michael Moorefield of Winchester.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel, South Boston, by the Rev. Bob Fox. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her parents, 6151 James D. Hagood Hwy.
