Ruby Welch

Ruby Barber Welch, 79, died Monday morning, April 6, 1998, at the residence of her daughter, Peggy Welch Finney, 3605 Westover Drive, after seven years of declining health.

Born June 2, 1918, in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of Thomas Madison Barber and Danie Gauldin Barber.

She had spent most of her life in the Danville area, where she had retired on disability from Dan River Inc., working in the weave room.

She was a member of Shermont Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Welch Finney of Danville and Carolyn Welch King of Old Hickory, Tenn.; a son, Lindon Welch of Pelham, N.C.; three sisters, Juanita Pickeral and Barbara Ball, both of Danville, and Ruth Welch of Chesapeake; two brothers, Thomas H. Barber of Pelham, N.C., and Richard Barber of Danville; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in Schoolfield cemetery by the Rev. Bill Soyars.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Peggy Finney, 3605 Westover Drive.

Nora Barber

Nora Alice Barber, 96, 121 Wilderness Lane, died Thursday, April 9, 1998, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home, following one year of declining health.

Born Jan. 24, 1902, in Henry County, she was a daughter of John Robert Barber and Martha McDaniel Barber.

She was a member of Ringgold Baptist Church.

She spent her entire life in the Ringgold community of Pittsylvania County.

She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. James Burke.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Nell Coffey

Nell Davenport Lewis Coffey died Thursday, April 9, 1998, in her residence.

Born at Great Oaks Farm in Sutherlin, she was a daughter of Merle Tucker and Harry Callaway Lewis.

She was married to Paul Huber Coffey, who survives.

She held undergraduate and graduate degrees from the College of William and Mary and Lynchburg College.

Prior to her retirement, she served as regional program coordinator for State Adult Education Programs in Planning District II.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Hillside Garden Club, and several professional organizations.

In addition to her husband, survivors include three daughters, Mary Wagner Coffey and Anne Lewis Coffey Moss, both of Lynchburg, and Ellen Davenport Coffey Kostel of Wilmington, N.C.; a sister, Harriet Callaway Lewis Clark of Wilson, N.C.; and one grandson.

A memorial service will be conducted 12:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church. A private burial service will be held at 5 p.m. at the Lewis family cemetery, Great Oak Farms, Laurel Grove.

The family will receive friends at 7-9 tonight at Diuguid Funeral Home, Rivermont Chapel.

Magel Collis

CHASE CITY - Magel Hoyle Collis, 84, died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, at Heritage Hall in Blackstone.

For 61 years, she was married to Elmer R. Collis, who survives.

She was a member of Black Branch Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, survivors include three daughters, Mary Royster of Chatham, Virginia Turner of Simi Valley, Calif., and Nancy Hyatt of Asheville, N.C.; a son, Michael Collis of Richmond; two brothers, Bliss Hoyle and Cecil Hoyle, both of Chase City; two sisters, Ollie Pearl Pleasant of Cartersville and Mozelle Leach of Chase City; 10 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday at Black Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Kevin Eley. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the residence.

Wood Funeral Service, Chase City, is in charge of arrangements.

Elnora Hamlett

BALTIMORE - Elnora P. Hamlett, 60, of 3811 Rogers Avenue, died Monday, April 6, 1998, in the Sinai Hospital.

A native of Halifax County, she is the daughter of Zack and Geneva Pointer.

Survivors include a daughter, Sherry Hosley of Baltimore; five sisters, Janette Harris of Alton, Gloria Kelly, Lena Rhaymes and Redessa Taylor, all of New York, and Rosa Lee Barnett of Baltimore; three brothers, Zallie Ponter and Jeremiah Pointer, both of Baltimore and Ozea Pointer of New York; and two grandsons.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. H. B. Surgeon.

The body may be viewed from 12 until 8 p.m. today at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel.

A wake will be held at the church from 1 until 2 p.m. Saturday.

The family will receive friends at the the Pointer Family Home on Pointer Road in Alton.

Melvin J. Hawkins

Melvin J. Hawkins, 79, 218 Lansbury Drive, died Thursday, April 9, 1998, in Piney Forest Health Care Center, following a brief illness.

Born in Schoolfield, he was a son of John H. and Otelia Harrell Hawkins Sr.

He was married to Catherine O. Pickrel Hawkins, who died Oct. 31, 1994.

He spent his entire career as manager of the research and design division of Dan River Inc.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Dan River Retirees Association, Christian Businessmen's Association, the Danville Beautification Committee, Schoolfield Friends Club and a former board member of Hope Harbor.

He also served in the Army during World War II.

Survivors include a son, Michael J. Hawkins of the residence; a daughter, Janis H. Simpson and her husband, Billy, of Chatham; two granddaughters, Lisa R. Robertson of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Kim Hawkins of Santa Monica, Calif., a grandson, Frank Alan Robertson of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a step-grandson, R. Scott Simpson of Burlington, N.C.; a brother, John H. Hawkins Jr. of Danville; four sisters, Mrs. Geraldine McKissick of Spring Hill, Fla., Mrs. Edna Newton of Lakeland, Fla., Mrs. Dorothy Jordon of Virginia Beach, and Mrs. Jackie Beasley of High Point, N.C.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Hawkins was predeceased by two sisters, Mildred L. Ms. Hawkins and Mrs. Genevieve H. Carr.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. James Bullock, pastor of Mill Creek Baptist Church.

Mr. Hawkins was taken to the home of his daughter, Janis H. Simpson, 476 Cherrystone Road, Chatham, at 5 p.m. Thursday. He will remain there until he is taken to Highland Burial Park for services.

Lowe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Lakey

RINGGOLD - Annie Staton Comer Lakey, 87, 269 Staton Drive, died Thursday, April 9, 1998, in Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg.

Born May 10, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of H.H. Staton and Niza Barker Staton.

She was married to William Allen Lakey, who died Feb. 22, 1986.

She spent her entire life in Pittsylvania County.

She was a member of Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Comer of Ford and John Staton of Summerfield, N.C.; and a sister, Lizzie Phelps of Ringgold; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jimmy Burks. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Kermit Powell

Beverly Kermit Powell, 78, 9788 Martinsville Highway, died Thursday, April 9, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 27, 1919, in Danville, he was a son of Beverly Thomas Powell and Emma Elliott Powell.

On July 27, 1940, he was married to Vista Walters Powell, who survives.

He spent his entire life in Pittsylvania County.

Prior to his retirement, he had worked in the No. 2 Card Room of the Riverside Division of Dan River Inc. for 40 years.

He was a member of Brosville United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and the Adult Choir. He also served on the trustee board, was past president of the trustee board, and was former president of the Men's Breakfast Club.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. He served two years with the Pacific Battle Group.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Peggy P. Shackelford of Danville; six sisters, Beatrice P. Bradner of Dry Fork, Danese P. Walters, Evie P. Haraway, Glenda P. Carneal and Gaynell P. Arnn, all of Danville, and Marjorie P. Earles of Bassett; seven brothers, Basil Powell, Sherman Powell, Neal Powell and Lincoln Powell, all of Danville, John Powell of Bryan, Texas, Huey Powell of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Gary Powell of Greensboro, N.C.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Richard McDowell. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Theodore "Ted" Prillaman

COLLINSVILLE - Theodore Bernard "Ted" Prillaman, 86, 3634 N. Daniels Creek Road, died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, in his residence.

Born Feb. 4, 1912, in Henry County, he was a son of Jacob M. Prillaman and Beulah Turner Prillaman.

He was married to Otra Fulcher Prillman, who survives

He was retired from Budd Trailer Co.

He was of the Primitive Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Judy Harris of Martinsville, Shirley Whitlock of Galax, Diana Chaney of Collinsville; a son, Teddy Ronald Prillaman of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Dossie P. Rakes of Hollins; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Ethel P. Nash; and five brothers, Elder Harvey D. Prillaman, Morton T. Prillaman, Cook S. Prillaman, Gold Prillaman, and Frank C. Prillaman.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Collins Funeral Chapel by Elder Lane Carter. The burial will be in Prillaman Family cemetery.

The family will be receive friends 12:30-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Opal Ward

Opal Radford Ward, 64, of 65 Morris Ave., died Friday, April 10, 1998, at her residence.

She was married to Isom M. Ward, who survives.

In addition to her husband of Danville, survivors include a daughter, Sharon Ward Goodman of Pelham, N.C.; three brothers, Barnard Radford of Stuart, David Radford of Floyd and Alvin Radford of Liberty, N.C.; six sisters, Alice Gord of Stuart, Clynda Radford of Floyd, Frances Bourne of Danville, Beulah Yearout of Riner, Shirley Ann Martin of Martinsville and Rosie Salmons of Collinsville; her stepmother, Orpha Radford of Floyd; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday at the Radford Family cemetery in Floyd by Pastor Calvin Hines.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 65 Morris Ave., from 5-7 tonight and at Wood Funeral Home, Floyd, from 2-3 p.m. on Sunday.

Roger Gauldin

Roger Gauldin, 54, 114 Carriage Hill Trailer Park, Lot 8B, died Friday, April 10, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a one-year decline in health.

Born in Rockingham County, N.C., on Nov. 26, 1943, he was the son of Eddie Lester Gauldin and Lillie Barker Gauldin.

He was formerly married to Gail Wilkins Clark, who survives.

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Gauldin spent most of his life in Albany, Ga., and had moved back to the Danville area in 1991. He was a self-employed painter and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include one son, William Roger Gauldin, Jr., of Danville; two daughters, Cheryl Gauldin Evans of Danville, and Christina Gauldin of Albany, Georgia; one step-daughter, Teresa Wall of Pelham, N.C.; four brothers, Frankie Gauldin and Walter Gauldin, both of Eden, N.C., Everett Gauldin of High Point, N.C., and Earnest Gauldin of Thomasville, N.C.; one sister, Shelby Gauldin Thompson of Eden, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Hubert Evans. Interment icon will follow at Schoolfield cemetery where military honors will be performed by the American Legion Memorial Post #325 Honor Guard.

The family will recieve friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 7-8:30, and at other times will be at the residence.
