Elton Powers
Elton Owen Powers, 72, 818 Village Drive, Lynchburg, died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at his home.
He was married
to Ethel Hardy Powers.
Born in Danville, he was a son of John William and Mary Sue Owen Powers.
He was a retired salesman with Strother Drug Co. and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a member of Elks Lodge #321 and Moose Lodge 1727. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a board governor and former treasurer of Escort Carrier and a member of the Airman Association and Lee Street Baptist Church in Danville.
In addition to his wife, he was survived by a brother, Aubrey T. Powers of Dublin. He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Lee Ellison.
The family will receive friends today from 7-9 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road, Lynchburg, and at other times at the residence.
Doris "Dee" Moore
Doris "Dee" Clapton Moore, 74, 1007 Woodbriar Lane, died Friday night, April 10, 1998, at her residence. She had been in declining health since Oct. 1, 1997.
Born in Essex, England, on August 29, 1923, she was a daughter of William Thomas Clapton and Gladys Johnston Clapton.
Mrs. Moore served in the Women's Land Army in England for five years during World War II. She came to the United States in 1948. Mrs. Moore in 1958 married
Lindsey Lee Moore, who predeceased her in 1983. She was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Moore is survived by three sisters in England, Joan Burt of Essex, Beryl Thorpe of Yorkshire, and Patricia Clarke-Lens of Devon; one niece and three nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Sunday, April 12, 1998, at 4:30 p.m. at Mountain View cemetery. The Rev. Fred Martin will be conducting the services.
The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Christ Episcopal Church Building Fund.
William Scearce
William Carlton Scearce, 84, 1380 Campview Road, died Friday, April 10, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a five year decline in health.
Born in Pittsylvania County Jan. 23, 1914, Scearce was the son of Archer T. Scearce and Carrie Turpin Scearce.
He was married
to Clara Roach Scearce, who survives.
he had spent most of his life in the Mount Cross community of Pittsylvania County where he was a retired farmer and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Wayne Scearce of the Mount Cross community, and one granddaughter. He was predeceased by a son, Charles Lenward Scearce.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Steve Smith. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will be at the residence.
Robert B. Sprankle
Robert B. Sprankle, 57, 610 Mount Cross Road, Apt. G4, died Friday, April 10, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 23, 1940, in Bellefonte, Pa., Sprankle was the son of Mary Krumbine Sprankle and Clarence D. Sprankle.
He was married
to Sandra Ilioff Sprankle, who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of Burton Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was a former Elk and was employed by Wal-Mart.
He is also survived by his mother, Mary Krumbine Sprankle of State College, Pa.; two stepdaughters, Marti L. Perry and Patti J. Simmons, both of Danville; a sister, Mary Ann Kashdollar of Driftwood, Pa.; and three step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Ralph McCormick. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence. Townes Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Louis Woltz
Louis Pool Woltz, 74, 11187 Bill Tuck Highway, Buffalo Junction, died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at his home.
Born in Halifax County April 13, 1923, he was a sone of Thomas A. Woltz and Lillian Pool Woltz.
He was married
to Mildred Perkins Woltz, who survives.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and a retired general contractor.
He was a member of Aarons Creek Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, and was the church clerk for 29 years.
He was a member of the Aarons Creek Ruritan Club, a founding member of Community National Bank and a charter member of the Midway Volunteer Fire Department.
Additional survivors include a daughter, Karen Woltz Mammosser of Norfolk, and a brother, James W. Woltz, of Buffalo Junction. He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas H. Woltz.
A memorial service will be held at Aarons Creek Baptist Church Monday at 4 p.m. by the Rev. Richard Cooke. Burial will be private.
Frank Smith -
Charles Franklin "Frank" Smith, 88, of 521 Frank Smith Road, died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at Person County Memorial Hospital. He had been in declining health for some time.
He was born in Caswell County, the son of Charles C. and Berta Harris Smith. A retired farmer, he was a member and elder of Griers Presbyterian Church and clerk of sessions for many years. He was a charter member of the Leasburg Ruritan Club and held many other offices of the club, also Ruritan of the Year in 1976, 1978 and 1990. He was Ruritan Man of the Year in 1986 and his family was named the 1976 Ruritan Family of the Year.
He is survived by his wife, Carrie Huges Smith of Brian Center, Yanceyville; one daughter, Annette McDuffie, and one son, Charles D. Smith, both of Leasburg; one sister, Sue Lindley of Burlington; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Griers Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. William Chappell. Interment
will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends and relatives 7-8:30 p.m today at Hooper Funeral Home, Yanceyville, and at other times at the home of the daughter, 51 Frank Smith Road.

Stanley Stevens
VIRGINIA BEACH - Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Stanley Stevens died Friday, April 10, 1998 in a local hospital.
He was born in New Haven, Conn., the son of Edwin Mason Stevens and Pearl Berry Stevens. He graduated from Hamden High School and attended the University of Connecticut prior to entering flight training as a naval aviation cadet in April, 1959. He was commissioned and designated a naval aviator in January, 1961. He was authorized to wear the Armed Service Expeditionary Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the National Defense Medal. In 1961, he escorted Linda Bird Johnson Robb at the Norfolk Azalea Festival.
From 1976 to 1978, he was the commanding officer of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light Three-Four. From 1983 to 1987, he served as executive officer of Norfolk Naval Air Station. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1988.
For eight years he was the NJROTC instructor at George Washington High School in Danville.
He was a member of Khedive Temple and a member of Princess Anne Masonic Lodge No. 25. He also was a member of the American Rose Society. He was married
to the former Patricia Williams Stevens of Ocracoke, N.C., who now resides in Virginia Beach.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Anne Williams Stevens of Virginia Beach, and a son, Stanley "Chip" Stevens of Houston, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the David Adams Memorial Chapel, NOB, Norfolk. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today in Holloman-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach.
Burial with full military honors will be held at a later date in Arlington National cemetery.
William Watts
William Owen Watts, 90, of 135 Howeland Circle, died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at his residence.
Born May 12, 1907 in Brookneal, Va., he was the son of Charles Owen Watts and Sallie Elmore Watts. He was a past member of the Elks Club, Tuscarora Country Club and Lions Club. He served as a deacon and elder at First Presbyterian Church. He was employed by Leggett Myers Tobacco Co. for 36 years, serving as office manager and buyer.
He was married
on April 28, 1938, to Ada P. Nolen Watts, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one nephew of Astor, Fla.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete,according to Townes Funeral Home.
Lester White
Mr. Lester A. White, 38, of 54 Augusta Ave., died Saturday morning, April 11, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. White was born in Danville on Dec. 14, 1959, a son of William Ralph White and Jean Moore White, both of whom survive. He had spent all of his life in Danville where he was a carpenter before becoming disabled. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors in addition to his parents of Danville include two sons, Kevin Alan White and Kyle Aaron White, both of Danville; two brothers, Douglas Wayne White and Terry Ralph White, both of Danville; and his fiancee, Kimberley D. Jackson of the residence. He was predeceased by a brother, William George White.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Robert L. Vermillion. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m., and at other times will be at his parents residence at 212 Wood Avenue.
Mabel Wyatt
Mabel Thompson Wyatt of 909 Wyllie Ave., Danville, died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three years of declining health. She had been in the hospital for nine days.
A native of Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Mayfield Thompson and Golden Grace Newcomb Thompson. She lived most of her life in the Danville area and was retired from Dan River Mills after 47 years of service. She was of the Baptist Faith. She served in the U.S. Navy WAVES during World War II.
She was married
on August 13, 1955, to Claiborne H. Wyatt, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the home, she is survived by a sister, Mary T. Newton of Danville, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers, Ralph Thompson, Davy James Thompson, Willard Thompson and William Thompson; and two sisters, Inez T. Gravely and Hattie T. Francis.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. Interment
in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times will be at the residence of her sister, Mary T. Newton, 509 Woodlawn Drive.
Russell Adams
Funeral services for Russell N. Adams, 85, 132 Elliott St., will be conducted noon today at Loyal Baptist Church by the Rev. Lovelle A. Maxwell Jr. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
He died Monday, April 13, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 8, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Matthew and Indiana Flippen Adams.
He was married
to Mary Tunstall Adams, who survives.
He was a practical nurse at the Veteran's Administration Hospital and a member of Loyal Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two brothers, David Adams of Cleveland, Ohio, and Thomas Adams of Philadelphia; and two sisters, Hattie Adams and Elizabeth Wilson, both of Danville.
The family will be at the residence.

Willie Fitzgerald
MT. VERNON, N.Y. - Willie Fitzgerald, 56, formerly of Chatham, died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at Shalom Nursing Home in Mt. Vernon.
Born Feb. 28, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of William Fitzgerald and Francis Crawley, who survive.
In addition to his father of New York and his mother of Ohio, survivors include five brothers, William Edward Fitzgerald of Mt. Vernon, Shirland Fitzgerald of Danville, Va., and Sterland Fitzgerald of Rushburg, Va., and Jeffrey Fitzgerald and John Crawley, both of Cleveland, Ohio; and three sisters, Arnetha Terry of Mt. Vernon, Sandra Bristol of Cleveland, Ohio and Janice Harris of Chatham, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Wilson Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Terry Echols. Burial will be in the Fitzgerald Family cemetery.
