WESTERVILLE, Ohio - Gregory Louis Hairston, 47, of 626 South Hempstead Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003.
Born Oct. 10, 1955, in Henry County, he was a son of Joe Louis Hairston and Virginia Loraine Hairston.
He was a 1973 graduate of George Washington Carver High School and the Bell and Howell Technical Institute in Columbus, Ohio. He was employed with the General Motor Truck Manufacturing Division in Mansfield, Ohio.
He was married to Evelyn Draper Hairston.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, and his parents, he is survived by two daughters, Katina Ives of Worthington, Ohio and Kimberly Hairston of Westerville, Ohio; and one brother, Ray Anthony Hairston of Martinsville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Pentecostal Holiness Church (the Carver Assembly Building), Carver Road, Martinsville, Va., with Brother John Holland officiating. Interment will follow in the Carver Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service, and at other times will be at the home of his parents, 3515 Spencer-Preston Road, Martinsville, Va.

Dot Lowe
DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy Scearce Lowe, 70, formerly of 184 Lambert Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in the Piney Forest Health Care Center after being in declining health for the past 12 months.
Born March 17, 1932, in Fredricksburg, she was the daughter of Beaumont W. Scearce and Louise Walker Scearce.
She had lived in Fredricksburg prior to moving to Danville, where she lived most of her life.
She was employed by Dan River, Inc. for a period of time before becoming a full-time homemaker. She was of the Catholic faith.
She married James L. Lowe in June 1950. He predeceased her in 1974.
She is survived by two sons, James (Tony) Lowe of Wilmington, N.C. and Monte Lowe of Clemons, N.C.; three daughters, Scarlett L. Duncan, Lisa L. Aherron and Tammy L. Smith, all of Ringgold; one sister, Nayden S. Hayden of Fredricksburg; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
A private interment will be held at a later date.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence of her daughter Lisa and Todd Aherron, 317 Cedar Road, Ringgold.

Juanita Parrish Shacklock
DANVILLE, Va. - Juanita Parrish Shacklock, 82, of 1605 Blair Loop Road, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and two days in the hospital.
Born Oct. 25, 1920, in Rusk, Texas, she was a daughter of James Hurd Parrish and Lizzie Davis Parrish.
She had lived in Virginia Beach prior to moving to Danville, where she lived for the last year. She was of the Presbyterian faith.
She was married to Ramon M. Shacklock.
In addition to her husband of Chesapeake, she is survived by two sons, James Slaski of Virginia Beach and Ramon M. Shacklock Jr. of Danville; two brothers, Glenn Parrish of Axton and W.T. Parrish of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Louise P. Cantrell of Dallas, Texas, Jeannie Parrish of Las Vegas, Nev. and Joyce P. Baker of Austin, Texas; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Dawn Gandy.
A private memorial service may be held at a later date.

Marie Hurt Dillard Smith
CALLANDS, Va. - Marie Hurt Dillard Smith, 94, of 9788 Callands Road, died Jan. 9, 2003, at her residence.
Born Oct. 14, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Hurt and Mary Coleman.
She was an educator who worked for the Pittsylvania County School System.
She was a member of Hopel Chapel Baptist Church.
She is survived by five sons, the Rev. Willard Smith and his wife, Gurdine, of Dry Fork, Alonza Smith and his wife Doreatha and Edward Smith and his wife Mary, both of Danville, Arthur Smith Sr. and his wife Mildred of Maryland, Edsel Dillard and his wife Kelly of Chatham; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Dillard of Chatham; eight daughters, Mrs. Eleanora McClanahan of Chatham, Mrs. Flossie Jones and her husband Lloyd of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mrs. Nayde Gunn of Danville, Mrs. Naomi Mathis and her husband Robert, Mrs. Leola Motley and Mrs. Barbara T. Word and her husband, William, all of Maryland, Mrs. Josie Gravely of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Helen Stackhouse and her husband, William of Woodbridge; one brother, Mr. Lafayette Hurt of Washington, D.C.; four sisters, Mrs. Calvon Thomas of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Carrie Harris of Fayetteville, N.C., Mrs. Booker Terry of Chatham and Mrs. Louise Steward of Oxford, Conn.; 27 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one son, Henry Dillard of Chatham.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday from the North New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Delaware Clark officiating. Interment will follow in the Hopel Chapel Church Cemetery.
Viewing will be 4-8 p.m. Monday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.

Arthur Eugene Sneed Sr.
HALIFAX, Va. - Arthur Eugene Sneed Sr., 86, of 2038 Grubby Road, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Jan. 5, 1917, in Halifax County, he was the son of Arthur Manley Sneed and Matie Belle Cully Sneed, who predeceased him.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, Grubby Road.
He was a cabinet maker and a life member of the VFW.
He was married to Frances Shepard Sneed.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by two daughters, June Angela Foster of Halifax and Linda Sneed Schneider of Chesterfield; three sons, Arthur Eugene (Chip) Sneed Jr. and Mark Shepard Sneed, both of Chesterfield, and John Cully Sneed of Roxboro, N.C.; two brothers, Richard Fuller Sneed of Fayetteville, N.C. and Eugene "Dink" Sneed of South Boston; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Stephen Michael Sneed.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ, Grubby Road, with the Rev. Buddy Rose and the Rev. Todd Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

James Edward Stroud
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - James Edward Stroud, 73, of 5610 Mooretown Road, died Sat., Jan. 11, 2003, at the Williamsburg Community Hospital.
Born Dec. 29, 1929, in Rockingham County, N.C., he was a son of Richmond Hobson Stroud and Jessie Easley Stroud, who predeceased him.
He attended the Bellevue Gospel Chapel in Bellevue, Pa.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the 78th Engineering Division of the U.S. Army.
He was a retired electrician.
He was married to Karen Grubbs Stroud.
In addition to his wife, of the home, he is survived by one son, James Rodney Stroud of Williamsburg; one daughter, Gina Stroud Binder of Manassas; three sisters, Rachel Stroud Anderson of New Bern, N.C., Mildred Stroud Markham of Blanch, N.C. and Nancy Stroud McGee of Danville; one brother, Harvey Stroud of Pelham, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Martha Stroud Marchand and Gloria Stroud Mills; and two brothers, Donald Stroud and William (Bill) Stroud.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Townes Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Roy Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Hylton Family Cemetery on the Stony Mill Road. Full military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Dan River Post #1097.

Wiley Everett Webb
DANVILLE, Va. - Wiley Everett Webb, 83, of 172 Bowe St., died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for the past five years and was taken to the hospital after suddenly becoming ill at his residence.
Born May 2, 1919, in McDowell County, W.Va., he was a son of Lawrence Webb and Mandy Bowman Webb.
He had resided in the Danville area for the past 54 years. He retired from Dan River Mills at age 62, after 38 years of service. He was a member of the Church of God Prophecy on Baltimore Avenue.
He was married to Zefra Turman Webb.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Myrtle Utt of Fancy Gap and a brother, Norman Webb of Mt. Airy, N.C.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Charles Hawkins officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence, located in the Bachelors Hall community.

Roy Wingfield Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - James Roy Wingfield Sr., 84, of 4464 Old Richmond Road, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Riverside Health Care Center after several years of declining health and 12 days in the hospital.
Born Feb. 7, 1918, in Martinsville, he was a son of the late James Minor Wingfield and the late Martha Kallam Wingfield.
Mr. Wingfield had lived all of his life in Danville and Pittsylvania County. He had retired from Danville Regional Medical Center, formerly Danville Memorial Hospital, where he had worked as an electrician. Prior to being employed by the Danville Memorial Hospital, he worked for the former Danville Electric Company for a number of years.
Mr. Wingfield was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church.
He married Maude Vernon Wingfield on April 12, 1939.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a son, James (Jimmy) R. Wingfield Jr. and his wife, Edith S. Wingfield, of Danville; two daughters, Martha Sue W. Dill and her husband, Bill Dill, of Natural Bridge and Jo Ann W. Bishop of Virginia Beach; a sister, Jessie Willie Coleman of Danville; three half brothers, James Minor of Richmond, Luther H. Wingfield of Kembridge and Willie A. Wingfield of Farmville; a niece, Sally C. Shields of Danville; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Mae W. Huffstetler and two half brothers, Charles Wingfield and Carlton Wingfield.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Dr. A.C. Smith officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Nancye Scruggs Altice
DANVILLE, Va. - Nancye Scruggs Altice expired on August 6, 2002, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home after a long illness. Nancye was born February 24, 1934 and was the daughter of the late Otie Linwood Scruggs, Mamie Farthing Scruggs and was the mother of the late Marsha Lee Altice.
Nancye graduated from Whitmell Farm Life School and lived most of her life at 213 Ripley Drive. Nancye was employed by the John Daniel Corporation and was later self-employed as an antique dealer, restaurant owner and operated a Christmas House. Nancye spent many wonderful summers with Marsha and friends at Ocean Drive, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She attended Christ The King Lutheran Church and is survived by cousins, aunts and friends.
Nancye will be remembered by those who loved her for her wonderful story telling and her hearty laughter. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Jim Kleinfelter at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 9, 2002 at the chapel of Townes Funeral Home. Visitation will be prior to the funeral at 10:00 a.m. at Townes Funeral Home and burial will be at Highland Burial Park.

BLAIRS, Va. - Georgia Carter Davis, 86, of 629 East Witt Road, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 9, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Carter and Rosa Lovelace Carter Bennett.
She was married to Johnnie Davis Sr., who predeceased her. She was employed at Southern Processors for many years prior to retirement and was a member of Bibleway Worldwide Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Jane Rowe Vann of Mt. Vernon, N.Y. and Carolyn Moore of Landham, Md.; one son, Johnnie Davis Jr. of Blairs; one sister, L.B. McLaughlin of Blairs; two brothers, Clifton Bennett of Mt. Vernon, N.Y. and Roy "Doc" Bennett Jr. of Danville; ten grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Bibleway Worldwide Church with Apostle Lawrence Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Lona Walker Doss
DANVILLE, Va. - Lona Walker Doss, 88, formerly of Franklin County, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Everlena D. Bowling.
Born Oct. 20, 1913, she was the daughter of the late John M. Walker and Geneva Adkins Walker.
She was married in 1932 to William Edward Doss who predeceased her in 1962. She made her home at Holiday Village for the past sixteen years, living previously in Franklin and Pittsylvania counties. She was a member of Gill's Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, William Garfield Doss Sr. of Danville and James M. "J.M" Doss of Chatham; one daughter, Everlena D. Bowling of Danville; one brother, Jack M. Walker of Glade Hill; four sisters, Ester W. Dillion of Glade Hill, Rachael W. Jefferson, Nancy W. Lee, and Tilitha J. Carter, all of Danville; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband, by four brothers, Sherman W. Walker, Harden Walker, Daniel O. Walker and Billy Walker; and two sisters, Matilda W. Amos and Blanche W. Doss.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Flora Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Larry Hollandsworth and Clarence Stone officiating. Interment will follow in the Doss Family Cemetery.
