Clarence Goins
Clarence Lea Goins, 58, 1789 Mill Creek Road, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born Oct. 25, 1939, in Louisville, Tenn., he was the son of Clarence Goins and Lillian Thompson Goins.
He was married
to Esther Fitzgerald Goins, who survives.
He was employed by the City of Danville, working as a cost estimator/inspector and fair housing officer. He also served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Clarence Lea Goins III of Danville; four sisters, Galene Crawford, Dalene Wilson and Bernice Crawford, all of Knoxville, Tenn., and Bobbie Ann Cook of Alcoa, Tenn.; and a grandson.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Father David V. McGuire. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
There will be a wake of Christian service from 7-8 tonight at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home.
All other times, the family will receive friends at the residence.
John Moss Jr.
CLOVER - John Horace Moss Jr., 73, 11226 James D. Hagood Hwy., died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at his residence.
Born Jan. 17, 1925, in Halifax County, he was a son of John Henry Moss and Minnie Dunkley Moss.
He was married
to Marian Bomar Moss, who survives.
He was a member of Clover Methodist Church and the American Legion.
In addition to his wife of Clover, survivors include a son, Horace A. Moss of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Maggie Edmondson of Clover and Corrie Griffin of South Boston; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by his brother, Bill Moss.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Clover cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Ernest Bernard
CALLANDS - Ernest Everette Bernard, 61, of 3261 Wateroak Road, died Sunday, April 14, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 29, 1934, in Franklin County, he was a son of John Samuel Bernard and Letha Ann McBride Bernard.
He was a farmer in his early days, and for the last 11 years worked for American Furniture Co. of Martinsville.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Rosa Kathleen Tuck Bernard, of the residence; one daughter, Wendy Kathleen Bernard of the residence; four sons, Charles Everette Bernard of Danville, Ricky Dale Bernard of Martinsville, Tony Dean Bernard of Danville and Donald Glenn Bernard of Callands; one brother, James Bernard of Chatham; three sisters, Vergie Smith of Rocky Mount, Janie Adkins of Axton, and Mary Wells of Danville; and seven grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, John Herbert Bernard.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Ridge Christian Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Robert Coles
Master Sgt. Robert Demetrius Coles, 33, of 164 White St., died Saturday, April 7, 1996, while serving in the U.S. Army in Italy.
Born Aug. 1, 1962, in Danville, he was the son of Barbara S. Coles who survives.
Other survivors include four sisters, Karen Harris of Lynchburg, Sheila Coles, Kathy Pounds and Andrea Jones all of Danville; three brothers, Leonard Coles of Fort Campbell, Ky., and Donzell Coles and Barton Shirley both of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Camp Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. W.J. Toomer. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

E.C. Gerringer
E.C. Gerringer, 78, of 205 Clement Ave., died Saturday, April 13, 1996, in Semora N.C.
Born Jan. 23, 1918, in Pelham, N.C., he was a son of Eli Craven Gerringer Sr. and Lilly May McGee Gerringer.
He spent most of his life in Danville and was an agent for North American Van Lines for 42 years.
He was a member of Virginia Movers Conference, and president and owner of Merchants Delivery Moving & Storage Inc.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church, where he served on the board of deacons and as superintendent of Sunday school No. 3.
He had life membership in the P.T.A and served on the board of directors of Goodwill Industries. Other memberships included Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge, Danville Consistary of Scottish Rite, and ACCA Temple Shrine.
He had received the Sertoma Man of the Year award.
On Oct. 16, 1941, he was married
to Ruth Owen Gerringer, who survives.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Earlene G. Riddle and Diane G. Collie both of Danville; one son, Stephen Phillip Gerringer of Danville; one sister, Sara G. Carter of Ruffin, N.C.; one brother, Sidney Gerringer of Rockingham, N.C.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Lee Ellison. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Allen Collie, 145 Fox Hollow Drive, Danville.
Poulia Goches
Poulia Aslane Goches, 83, died Sunday morning, April 14, 1996, in Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 11, 1912, in Stenoma, Greece, she was a daughter of Serafim Aslane and Fotinia Aslane.
She was a member of Saint Peter's Greek Orthodox Church and was married
to Christ John Goches, who died Aug. 27, 1970.
She is survived by a daughter, Pam G. Katsifos of Martinsville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from Saint Peter's Greek Orthodox Church by Father Thomas Ninnis. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. today at Townes Funeral Home.
A Trisagion Prayer Service will be held 7:30 tonight at Townes Memorial Chapel by Father Thomas Ninnis.
Ann Marie Setliff
Ann Marie Setliff, 51, of 353 Ferry Road, died Sunday morning, April 14, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center after a two-week decline in health. She had been in the hospital for one week.
Born Aug. 14, 1944, in Danville, she was a daughter of Willie Joe Setliff Jr., who survives, and Una Jefferson Setliff.
She spent her entire life in Danvile, where she worked as an inspector in quality control at Corning Inc. for 23 years. She worked until her health failed.
She was a graduate of George Washington High School and was a member of Stokesland Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her father of the home, include a brother, William "Joe" Setliff of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Michael Ledbetter and the Rev. Don Frank. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Russell Adams
Russell N. Adams, 85, 132 Elliott St., died Monday, April 13, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 8, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Matthew and Indiana Flippen Adams.
He was married
to Mary Tunstall Adams, who survives.
He was a practical nurse at the Veteran's Administration Hospital and a member of Loyal Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two brothers, David Adams of Cleveland, Ohio, and Thomas Adams of Philadelphia; and two sisters, Hattie Adams and Elizabeth Wilson, both of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted noon Thursday at Loyal Baptist Church by the Rev. Lovelle A. Maxwell Jr. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Adams may be viewed from 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence.
James Atkins
GRETNA - James Rogers Atkins, 62, 5433 Old Mine Road, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 18, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Richard Keen Atkins and Madeline Crawley Atkins.
He was a member of Piney Fork Baptist Church and was retired from Ennis Business Forms. He was a U.S. Marine veteran.
An accomplished musician, he was a part of the comedy team Jasper (Paul Dalton) and James, which performed for local charities and nursing homes.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Farmer Atkins of the residence; a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Kevin Smith of Lugoff, S.C.; two sisters, Marguerite Keifer of Hurt and Lillian Shumate of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday, April 16, 1998, at Colbert-Moran Chapel by the Rev. Joe Glass and Rudy Hearn, minister. Burial will be in Carl O. Moran Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and other times at the residence, 5433 Old Mine Road.
The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Gretna Rescue Squad, Chatham Rescue Squad or Climax First Responders.
Edith Francisco
SOUTH BOSTON - Edith Murray Francisco, 67, 3040 East Hyco Road, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born March 8, 1931, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of William Allen Murray and Louise Collie Murray.
She was married
to Alvin G. Francisco, who survives.
She was a medical technician at Fuller-Roberts Clinic.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a former deacon, a former member of Fidelis Class and a current member of Friendship Class. She was also a former choir member and former director of Adult 3 Department.
She was also a member of Jr. Woman's Club and Better Breathers Support Group.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her brother, Charles S. Murray of Fairfax.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert M. Fox Jr. and the Rev. Dean Miller. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.

Ellen Henderson
Ellen Ann Elder Henderson, 62, 847 Pine St., died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 1, 1936, in Danville, she was a daughter of Carl Elder and Irene Hinton Elder.
She was married
to Dewey M. Henderson Sr., who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include four sons, Dewey Henderson Jr., Jerome Henderson and Robert Henderson, all of Danville, and Michael Graves of Philadelphia; three daughters, Deborah Henderson, Sharon Henderson and Wanda Henderson, all of Danville; two sisters, Lorene Elder of Danville and Frances Boyd of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four brothers, Sam Mendenhall, Clarence Elder and James L. Elder, all of Danville, and Nathaniel Elder of Patterson, N.J.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by Bishop Peggy Motley. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Mary Herndon
BLAIRS - Funeral services for Mary Elendor Boswell Herndon, 87, 7277 U.S. 29 North, will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Blairs Baptist Church by the Rev. Carson Dalton and the Rev. Melvin Winters. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
She died Monday morning, April 13, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Oct. 22, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Charles L. Boswell and Elva Aaron Boswell.
On Aug. 16, 1930, she was married
to Arthur L. Herndon, who died June 15, 1985.
She was a member of Blairs Baptist Church and the Lorene Thompson Missionary Circle.
Survivors include five daughters, Nancy H. Towler and Jane H. Osborne, both of Danville, Diana Richardson of Ashland, Peggy H. Farson of Blairs and Beth Snitzer of Mechanicsville; three sons, Charles T. Herndon of Danville, Paul K. Herndon of Perkasie, Pa., and Gene N. Herndon of Telford, Pa.; a brother, Archie Boswell of Dry Fork; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by two sisters, Eva B. Herndon and Ruby B. Holley; and two brothers, C. Aubrey Boswell and Harold K. Boswell.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

SOUTH BOSTON - Raymond Albert Quick, 80, 214 Cherry St., died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Feb. 3, 1918, in Tishomingo, Okla., he was a son of Floyd Summers Quick and Clara Grisham Quick.
He was married
to Jaunell Pollard Quick, who survives.
He was a member and pastor emeritus of Ash Avenue Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, survivors include a son, Mark Elliott Quick of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a daughter, Dora Gayonne Quick of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, W.F. Quick of Cushing, Okla.; and three sisters, Marie Rowe of Bristow, Okla., and Wilma Holder of Guymon, Okla., and Rosa Haines of Odom, Texas.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Ash Avenue Baptist Church by the Rev. Darrell Poole, the Rev. Jack Stewart and the Rev. Michael Phillips. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery, Scottsburg.
