SOUTH BOSTON - A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today at Cedar Grove United Methodist cemetery in Alton by the Rev. Harvey Warnick for Lacy Burgess Green, 77, 1102 Second Street. He died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born in Halifax County April 20, 1920, he was the son of Seddie J. Green and Ella Burgess Green.
He was a World War II Navy veteran and a retired employee of William M. Tuck Airport.
He was a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Frances Thomas, of Alton, and Elizabeth Reaves and Ella Green, both of South Boston.

Michael Harris
@normal:Michael Christopher Harris, 21, 540 Keen Street, Apt. 2, died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center following a car accident earlier in the afternoon.
Born May 17, 1976, in Danville, he was a son of Jasper A. Harris Jr. and Barbara J. Perkins.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church. He was a junior at Liberty University in Lynchburg and also worked part time at Schewel's Furniture Company.
In addition to his father of Dry Fork and his mother of Danville, survivors include a
brother, Jasper A. Harris III of Richmond; two sisters, B. Allen Slaughter of Deltona, Fla., and Victoria E. Harris of Dry Fork; and his maternal grandparents, Gordon M. Perkins of Danville and Dorothy G. Gauldin of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks. Burial will be in the family cemetery next to Mercy Seat Presbyterian Church cemetery.
The family will recieve friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church. At other times, the family will be at the residence of his mother, 540 Keen Street, Apt. 2.

Lila Heard
Lila Coleman Heard, 88, 148 Marshall Terrace, died Saturday morning, April 18, 1998, at her granddaughter's residence in Atlanta.
Born Dec. 27, 1909, in Danville, she was the daughter of Roy Cabell Coleman and Helen Hobart Coleman.
She was employed by the Virginia Employment Service until her retirement in 1973. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, the Dorothea Henry Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Huguenot Society.
She was married
to Harry Howe Heard, who died Jan. 20, 1940.
Survivors include one daughter, Helen Heard Etheridge of Danville; three granddaughters, Patricia Etheridge of Atlanta, Ann Etheridge of New York, and Janet Etheridge Burke of San Anselmo, Calif.; one grandson, Thomas Etheridge of San Francisco; and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Green Hill cemetery by the Rev. James Mathieson.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, 245 Oakwood Circle.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Danville Life Saving Crew.

Josephine Schreffler
SOUTH BOSTON - Josephine Cline Schreffler, 63, of Fernwick Drive, died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at her home.
Born Jan. 6, 1935, in Raleigh, N.C., she was a daughter of Ambrose Schenck Cline Sr. and Betty Rand Cline.
She was an employee of Central Fidelity National Bank for 20 years and was later employed by the Industrial Development Authority of Halifax County before taking a disability leave in January 1997.
She was a member of the Halifax United Methodist Church.
She was married
to David E. Schreffler Jr., who survives.
In addition to husband of South Boston, survivors include two sons, David E. Schreffler III of Roxboro, N.C., and Maj. Mark Cline Schreffler of Yorktown; two daughters, Vivian Elizabeth Sillmon of Richmond, and Donna Rand Wade of Midlothian; two sisters, Mrs. William B. Pearce of Raleigh, N.C., and Mrs. Robert H. Frazer Sr. of Goldsboro, N.C.; one brother, Walter Maxwell Cline of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and six grandchildren.
She was preceeded in death by a brother, Ambrose Schenck Cline.
A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Main Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. Les Goode, the Rev. Ron Mateer, the Rev. Chuck Cassidy, and the Rev. Dr. Jack Martin. Interment
will follow in Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. tonight at the home, Fernwick Drive.

Edna Crumpton
Edna Arnold Crumpton, 97, formerly of Danville, died Sunday afternoon, April 19, 1998, at Chippenham Manor Nursing Home in Richmond.
Born Aug. 16, 1900, in Sutherlin, she was the daughter of William Slade Arnold and Virginia Lea Vaughan.
She was married
to Clarence H. Crumpton, who died April 6, 1979.
She lived in Pelham, N.C., until 1972, when she moved to Augusta Avenue in Danville. In April 1994, she moved to Richmond.
She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church and Young at Heart Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Haufler of Richmond and Virginia Landers of Chester; three sons, Clarence "Cotton" Crumpton Jr. of Chester, Wallace Crumpton of Wheatridge, Colo., and Ronald "Ronnie" Crumpton of Danville; 17 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by a son, Earl Crumpton; and a daughter, Elizabeth Crumpton.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. J. Richard Markham. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral, and other times at the residence of her son, Ronnie Crumpton, 217 Orchard Drive.
David Cunningham
Funeral services for David Thomas Cunningham, formerly of Baltimore, will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hyco Zion Baptist Church in Roxboro, N.C., by the Rev. Stanley Kearney. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He was born Aug. 5, 1916, in Person County, N.C.
There will be a wake for family and friends at the church an hour prior to the service.
He was married
to Odessa Crawley Cunningham, who predeceased him.
Survivors include three daughters, Fretchetter Cunningham Bell, Mamie Love Cunningham and Delois Cunningham Conaway, all of Baltimore; a son, Sterling Cleotis Cunningham of Baltimore; a brother, Sterling Cunningham of Roxboro, N.C.; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

James 'Boy' Dickerson
GRETNA - James "Boy" Dickerson, 85, of Creasy Street Apartments, died Saturday morning, April 18, 1998, at Elder Care Nursing Home in Rocky Mount.
Born May 16, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Nellie Dickerson.
He is survived by a son, James Dickerson Jr., of El Paso, Texas.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in the Dickerson Family cemetery by the Rev. Earl Younger.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Ethel Diuguid, Apt. D-4, Creasy Street Apartments, Gretna.

Lt. Col. Martin Merchant Jr.
Lt. Col. Martin Luther Merchant Jr., 74, 111 Briarwood Drive, died Monday, April 20, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and a day in the hospital.
Born March 25, 1924, in Oneonta, N.Y., he was a son of Martin L. Merchant Sr. and Gladys Eldredge Merchant.
On March 26, 1976, he was married
to Kathleen Farthing Merchant, who survives.
In June of 1962, he had retired from the U.S. Army prior to moving to Danville, where he had lived for the past 22 years.
He had worked for Dan River Inc., as a supervisor in the Piedmont Plant until his retirement due to health reasons.
He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, a former Sunday school teacher and usher. He was very active in all church activities as long as his health would allow.
He was a member of Ballard Pruitt Post 647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was awarded the Purple Heart, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Silver Star and Korean Service Medal.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Martin L. Merchant III of New York and Jeff K. Merchant of Ruffin, N.C.; two daughters, Joanne M. Gibson and Jessica Merchant, both of New York; a stepson, Michael Yates of Danville; a stepdaughter, Phyllis Y. Jackson of Jefferson, Ga.; two brothers, Richard Merchant and Douglas Merchant, both of New York; three sisters, Jennie M. Mullooly, Barbara M. Winsman and Nancy Merchant, all of New York; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Ellen M. Blann.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Keen Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Campbell. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence.
John Merricks
CALLANDS - John Odie Merricks, 84, 645 Avondale Road, died Monday, April 20, 1998, at his residence.
Born July 25, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Thomas William Merricks and Bessie Wright Merricks.
He was married
to Fannie Haskins Merricks, who survives.
He was a member of County Line Christian Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Glenn Leon Merricks and Alfred Dale Merricks, both of Callands; two brothers, Irvin Merricks of Callands and Walter Merricks of Dry Fork; four sisters, Ava M. Willis of Dry Fork, Ella M. Coward of Danville, Marie M. Wood of Chatham and Pauline M. Woodall of Axton.
He was predeceased by a brother, Wallace Merricks; and a sister, Helen Merricks.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at County Line Christian Church by Minister Dean Ashby. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Henry County.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the church, and other times at the residence.
