John White
John Henry White, 69, 245 Jefferson Ave., died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 15, 1928, he was a son of John White and Bertha Law White.
He was married
to Irene Chappelle White, who survives.
He was a member of Vance Street Baptist Church.
He was a custodian for the Danville school system for more than 40 years.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Bernice White and Alease Miller, both of Danville; two sons, John White Jr. of Danville and Robert White of Columbus, Ga.; two sisters, Carletta Robinson and Julia Standfield, both of Danville; a brother, Alonza Crews of Danville; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday at Vance Street Baptist Church by the Rev. H.L. Dickerson. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The remains may be viewed this afternoon at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Frank Lovelace
GRETNA - Frank Warren Lovelace, 76, 1504 Ben Annie Road, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at his residence after a long illness.
Born May 24, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Samuel Edwin Lovelace and Stella Shelton Lovelace.
Mr. Lovelace was an Army veteran of World War II, a retired farmer and a member of Zion United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian Franklin Lovelace of the residence; a daughter, Brenda Amos of Gretna; two sons, Joe Lovelace of Chatham and Phillip Lovelace of Gretna; a sister, Edith Robey of Owings, Md.; a brother, Wallace Lovelace of Trenton, N.J.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Gretna Burial Park by the Rev. Jess Staton.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and other times at the residence, 1504 Ben Annie Road, Gretna.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Gretna Rescue Squad, Gretna Volunteer Fire Department or the Danville Cancer Society.
Lt. Col. Martin Merchant Jr.
Lt. Col. Funeral services for Martin Luther Merchant Jr., 74, 111 Briarwood Drive, will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Keen Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Campbell. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park with military honors performed by the U.S. Army Burial Detail from Ft. Lee, Va.
He died Monday, April 20, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and a day in the hospital.
Born March 25, 1924, in Oneonta, N.Y., he was a son of Martin L. Merchant Sr. and Gladys Eldredge Merchant.
On March 26, 1976, he was married
to Kathleen Farthing Merchant, who survives.
In June of 1962, he had retired from the U.S. Army prior to moving to Danville, where he had lived for the past 22 years.
He had worked for Dan River Inc., as a supervisor in the Piedmont Plant until his retirement due to health reasons.
He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, a former Sunday school teacher and usher. He was very active in all church activities as long as his health would allow.
He was a member of Ballard Pruitt Post 647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was awarded the Purple Heart, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Silver Star and Korean Service Medal.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Martin L. Merchant III of New York and Jeff K. Merchant of Ruffin, N.C.; two daughters, Joanne M. Gibson and Jessica Merchant, both of New York; a stepson, Michael Yates of Danville; a stepdaughter, Phyllis Y. Jackson of Jefferson, Ga.; two brothers, Richard Merchant and Douglas Merchant, both of New York; three sisters, Jennie M. Mullooly, Barbara M. Winsman and Nancy Merchant, all of New York; and three step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Ellen M. Blann.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence.
Earnest Anderson
HALIFAX - Earnest Alfred Anderson, 74, 3044 Abbott Hill Road, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at his residence.
Born March 14, 1924, in Halifax County, he was a son of Henry Anderson and Lillie Crews Anderson.
He was married
to Lillie Crews Anderson, who survives.
He was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of Halifax, survivors include two sons, Phillip W. Anderson of Nathalie and Randy B. Anderson of Jarratt; a daughter, Dana Carol Anderson of Halifax; two brothers, Edgar Anderson of Lynchburg and Glen Anderson of Halifax; three sisters, Lucille Martin of Volens, Inez Newbill of South Boston and Helen Owen of Clover; and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Earnest Larry Anderson.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Hunting Creek Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Lee Roy Davis.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Powell Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his son, Phillip Anderson.
John Conner Jr.
NATHALIE - John David Conner Jr., 81, 7139 Hunting Creek Road, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
Born June 13, 1916, in Halifax County, he was a son of John David Conner Sr., and Mary Lou Wilborn Conner.
He was married
to Margie A. Conner, who survives.
He was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon. He was also a member of Kerns Masonic Lodge 143, Woodmen of the World Camp 136 and Halifax County Saddle Club.
He was a retired security guard.
In addition to his wife of Nathalie, survivors include a son, J.D. Conner III of Halifax; a daughter, Gayle Medley of Clover; a sister, Agnes Anderson of Nathalie; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Friday at Hunting Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Lee Roy Davis and the Rev. Melvin Bradshaw. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Peronneau Gallaher
PRINCE GEORGE - Peronneau Edward Gallaher died Wednesday, April 22, 1998.
He was the son of Mary G. Martin of Lynchburg and the late Eugene M. Gallaher.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Ethel D. Gallaher; a daughter, Lisa G. Riley and her husband, Glenn D. Riley of Richmond; a son, Patrick B. Gallaher of Leeburg; four grandchildren, Sarah N. Riley, Matthew D. Riley, Jensen L. Gallaher and Taylor B. Gallaher; a brother, Eugene M. Gallaher of Ringgold; a sister, Mary Ellen H. Robertson of Lynchburg; and several nieces and nephews.
He was an employee of NationsBank for 39 years, was active in his church, several civic clubs, the Train Collectors Association and was a past president of Virginia Baptist Foundation Board.
The family will receive friends at Walnut Hill Baptist Church from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at the church by the Rev. Stephen Jones and Dr. Glenn Plott. Burial will be in Southlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Walnut Hill Baptist Church Building Fund.

MILTON, N.C - Lillian Rena Taylor Jones, 3672 Hwy. 57, died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at her residence.
Born Nov. 3, 1904, in South Hill, she was a daughter of Norman and Lena Phillips Taylor.
She was married
to William Jones, who predeceased her.
She was a member of High Rock Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors include three brothers, Andrew Taylor of Blanch, James Taylor of Milton and Clinton Taylor of Durham; and three sisters, Earle Mask of Louisville, Ky., and Alpheus Prioleau of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Lena Bronson of Baltimore.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at High Rock Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Broadnax. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body may be viewed from 2-8 p.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Home, Yanceyville, and the family will be at the funeral home from 7-8 p.m. Friday, and other times at the residence.
Elizabeth Rorer
GRETNA - Elizabeth Turner Rorer, 83, 403 Leftwich St., died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 28, 1914, in Bedford County, she was a daughter of the late Louis Turner and Sallie Howell Turner.
She was married
to the late William Elmo Rorer.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Floyd Turner, Jack Turner, Al Turner and Louis Turner Jr.; and three sisters, Opal Turner, Annie Sink and Edith Kepley.
She was a member of Greenpond Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Jo Rorer of Gretna and Kathryn R. Weeks and her husband, Gary, of Mooresville, N.C.; three brothers, Martin Turner of Gretna, Ray Turner of Rocky Mount and Rex Turner of Dry Fork; a sister, Irene Johnson of Gretna; and three grandchildren, Troy Weeks, Todd Weeks and Tim Weeks.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Greenpond Baptist Church by the Rev. John McCray and the Rev. R.G. Rowland. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Della Williams
Della Black Williams, 81, formerly of 1820 Westover Drive, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at Riverside Health Care after several years of declining health and five and a half years at Riverside Health Care.
Born July 8, 1916, in Fries, she was a daughter of George D. Black and Carrie Mallory Black.
On May 30, 1941, she was married
to Paris A. Williams, who died Jan. 19, 1994.
She lived her early years in Fries and in 1948, moved to Danville.
She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church and was a retired homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Lucy W. Atkinson of Danville; a son, Kenneth A. Williams of Venice, Fla.; two sisters, Aleen Pearman of Knoxville, Tenn., and Jannevieve Mitchell of Detroit; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by two brothers, Wayne Black and Clifford Black; and two sisters, Inez Dowling and Gladys Mitchell.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. William Blalock.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Lucy Atkinson, 255 Gilliland Drive.
Richard Witcher
PITTSVILLE - Richard Kimble Witcher, 31, 517 Court Road, died Saturday night, April 18, 1998, on U.S. Hwy. 29, north of Chatham, as the result of injuries sustained in an accident.
Born July 25, 1966, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of J.D. Pannell and Lizzie Witcher, who survives.
He was employed as a logger and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Janet Berger Witcher of the residence; five children, Isaiah Deshay Witcher, Richard Deshaun Witcher, Quadell Dewayne Witcher and Clarence Detuan Witcher, all of the residence, and Darius Houston Witcher of Rahway, N.J.; three brothers, Jeffrey Witcher of Rahway, N.J., and Ricki Lee Witcher of Chatham and Clinton Ray Berger of Gretna; his maternal grandmother, Ida Witcher of Pittsville; his paternal grandmother, Amy Pannell Johnson of Pittsville; and his great-grandfather, Jimmy Lee Pannell of Sandy Level.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by Elder Gary Witcher. Burial will be in Burning Bush Holiness Church cemetery.
Raymond Abbott
Raymond J. Abbott, 75, 169 Tamworth Drive, died Thursday morning, April 23, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 18, 1922, in Danville, he was a son of Elisha Johnson Abbott and Tiller S. Abbott, who survives.
On May 3, 1942, he was married
to Mary Worley Abbott, who also survives.
He was the owner and operator of North End Building Supply Company for 30 years.
He was a member of Morotoch Lodge 210 Masonic Lodge and American Legion Post 325. He was also a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church and of the Chapel Sunday School Class.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp.
In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Danville, survivors include a daughter, Harriett A. Denning of Danville; a son, Larry R. Abbott of Smith Mountain Lake; three brothers, Curtis L. Abbott, Tom Abbott and Bobby Abbott, all of Danville; three sisters, Doris May Tilghman and Dovie Ferrell, both of Danville, and Mary Frances Fleming of Wytheville; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Billy Abbott.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Lee Ellison. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park with military honors performed by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post 325.
