HALIFAX - Elva Annie Curtis, 80, 1038 Flashback St., died Thursday, April 23, 1998, at her residence.
Born June 8, 1917, in Quebec, Canada, she was the daughter of Henry Charles Gustin and Myrtle Fields Gustin.
She was married
to Sherwood Stinson Curtis, who predeceased her.
She was a retired department manager for King's Department Store.
Survivors include four daughters, Dolly C. Webb of Stafford and Betty C. Hewett of Rochester, Ind., and Linda Curtis and Dee C. Bomar, both of Halifax; a son, Dana Curtis of Willingboro, N.J.; a brother, Aldie Gustin of Presque Isle, Me.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. today in Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church cemetery, Mt. Laurel, by the Rev. Ralph Rice.
The family will be at the residence.

Virgie Griffith
Funeral services for Virgie Jones Griffith, 87, 21 Glen Oak Drive, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Schoolfield Baptist Church by the Rev. David R. Turbyfill and the Rev. James M. McGhee. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.
She died Wednesday evening, April 22, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 23, 1910, in the Axton community, she was the daughter of Rash Jones and Annie Bell Jones.
She was married
to Melvin M. Griffith, who died April 16, 1994.
Since 1926, she had made her home in Danville, where she was retired from Dan River Inc.
She was a member of Dan River retired employees club.
She had been a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church for 72 years, where she taught Sunday school and was a choir member and a member of Ruth Sunday School Class and the WMU, where she had served as president. She was also a member of Rebekah Lodge.
Survivors include a son, Melvin Griffith Jr. of Danville; a daughter, Juanita G. Gravely of Axton; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 1135 Hobson Road, Axton, and also at the residence of her son, 123 Winston Road.

Jennifer Hodges
Jennifer Rena Hodges, 17, 2243 Winn Ridge Court, died Thursday, April 23, 1998, from injuries sustained in an auto accident.
Born April 2, 1981, in Danville, she was a daughter of Lee Hodges and Betty Worsham Hodges, who survive.
A life long resident of the Danville and Pittsylvania County area, she was a junior at Tunstall High School and was studying nursing at Pittsylvania County Vocational School.
She was a member of the Spanish Club at Tunstall High School.
In addition to her mother and father of the residence, survivors include a sister, Amanda Sha Hodges of the residence; a half-sister, Evonne Weatherford of Danville; and a half-brother, Deon Hodges of Danville.
She was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Edith Hodges and Robert Shelton Hodges; and her maternal grandparents, Doris Worsham and Murriel Worsham Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Sudie Holt
VERNON HILL - Sudie Goode Holt, 84, died Thursday, April 23, 1998, at her residence.
She was born April 7, 1914, in Halifax County.
Survivors include three daughters, Martha Wells of Vernon Hill, Sudie Venable of Halifax and Virginia Spivey of Detroit; two sons, John Holt of Vernon Hill and James Holt of Detroit; three sisters, Carrie Delaney of Halifax, Brady Owen of Vernon Hill and Elizabeth Owen of Danville; a brother, Arthur Goode of Danville; 28 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. today at New Vernon Baptist Church in Vernon Hill by the Rev. Roger Ford. Burial will be in New Arbor Baptist Church cemetery in South Boston.
Remains will lie in state an hour prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 2183 Thompson Store Road.

Elizabeth 'Bea' Jacobs
GRETNA - Elizabeth "Bea" Shelton Jacobs, 86, 2613 Spring Road (Rt. 4), died Friday, April 24, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 11, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late James Oliver Shelton and Annie Susan Moorefield Shelton.
She was married
to the late Ollie Bennett "Buster" Jacobs.
She was a member of Spring Road Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday School Teacher, pianist, WMU member, GA and Sunbeam leader.
She is survived by two daughters, Alene Jacobs Keen Moore of Danville and Barbara Jacobs Finch of Fairfax County; three granddaughters, Carolyn Marie Keen of Virginia Beach, Susan Finch Nylund and Elizabeth Finch Parker, both of San Diego, Calif.; three grandsons, Michael A. Keen of Chatham and Robert C. Keen and Ralph E. Keen, both of Danville; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday at Spring Road Baptist Church by the Rev. Shelby Royal. Interment
will be in Gretna Burial Park.

Deacon John Jennings
GLADYS - Deacon John Will Jennings, 91, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 20, 1907, in Halifax County.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Logan Jennings of Gladys; five daughters, Mary Jennings of Orange, N.J., Albany Jennings of West Orange, N.J., and Emma Massenburg of Roanoke, Odell Moore of Washington, D.C., and Elsie Jones of Chesapeake Beach, Md.; two sons, Wyatt Jennings of Scotch Plains, N.J., and Morrell Jennings of Hurt; two sisters, Carrie Allen and Gurtherine Scales, both of Norfolk; a brother, Robert Jennings Jr. of Norfolk; and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Sunday at Republican Grove Baptist Church in Nathalie by the Rev. L.S. Otey. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Remains will lie in state an hour prior to the service.

John Pointer
HALIFAX COUNTY - John Elmer Pointer, 94, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital, South Boston.
Born June 16, 1903, in Cornwall, N.Y., he was a son of Priscilla Narcissus Brandon and Kelly Pointer.
He was a member of Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Cruz of Atlanta; two sons, John Pointer of Somerset, N.J., and Kelly Pointer of Mileageville, Penn.; two sisters, Dorothy Wenstley and Nanie Johnson, both of Alton; a brother, Johnie Pointer of Alton; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at the Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church in Alton by the Rev. Dr. H.R. Surgeon. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Rocky Tate
AXTON - Rocky Morgan Tate, 15, 17296 Martinsville Hwy., died Thursday evening, April 23, 1998, as a result of a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Berry Hill Road and Loom Fixer Road in Pittsylvania County.
Born Aug. 20, 1982, in Martinsville, he was the son of Robert Morgan Tate and Patricia Ann Rieson.
A life long resident of the Axton community, he was of the Holiness faith.
He was a student at Tunstall High School.
In addition to his mother of Ridgeway and his father of Axton, survivors include two half-sisters, Tonia Lynn Hankins of Ridgeway and Valeria Pickeral of Ringgold; his paternal grandmother, Margaret Minter of Axton; and his maternal grandmother, Dorothy Brooks of Rocky Mount.
The family will be at the residence.

Walter Cobbs
Walter Herbert Cobbs, 80, Piney Point, died April 11, 1998 at St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown.
Born Dec. 13, 1917, in Callands, he was the son of Cabell Cobbs and Ella Weisel Cobbs.
He retired from the Navy April 18, 1960 after more than 20 years of service. While in the Navy, he received the Good Conduct Medal, a World War II Victory Medal, an American Defense Medal, a Navy Occupation Medal, an Asian-Pacific Medal, an American Theater Medal and a Pearl Harbor Commemorative Medal.
On May 14, 1948, he was married
to Mary Agnes Bradburn Cobbs, who survives.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a sister, Betty Daughty of Salem; four grandsons; and two great-grandsons.
He predeceased by three sisters, Jeanne Wilcox, Mildred Scott and Natalie Turner. He was predeceased by four brothers, John H. Cobbs, Charles Cobbs, Thomas Cobbs and William C. Cobbs.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 14 at St. George Catholic Church in Valley Lee by the Rev. Robert Riedel. Interment
was in the church cemetery.
Myrtle Dalton
BASSETT - Myrtle D. Dalton, 90, 119 Blackberry Road, died Friday, April 24, 1998 at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born Feb. 2, 1908, in Gretna, she was the daughter of James L. Dalton and Mattie S. Dalton.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Bassett. She was a member of the Home Demonstration Club of Bassett.
She was a teacher of TEL for many years. She lived in Bassett for 67 years, and was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Berkley A. Dalton of Gretna; one daughter, Ruth D. Barrow of Richmond; two sons, Calvin L. Dalton of Ridgeway and James B. Dalton of Collinsville; three sisters, Alice Dove and Doris Creasy, both of Gretna and Beulah Hodnett of Rustburg; three brothers, Homie Dalton and Ocie Dalton, both of Gretna and Oscar Dalton of Hurt; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church Bassett by the Rev. Lou Bennit and Robert Hanes. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home.
Infants Farmer
Infants Jonathan and Jahnese Farmer died Saturday, April 25, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Survivors include their parents, Monica R. Williams and Jonathan L. Farmer; maternal grandparents, Wonell Williams and Glorya Williams of South Boston; paternal grandparents, Edward Farmer and Carolyn Farmer of Vernon Hill; and paternal great-grandparents, Benjamin Farmer and Irene Chapel.
A graveside service will be conducted 2:30 p.m. today at Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Arthur E. Crews.

Gladys Hardy
Gladys Ivey Hardy, 85, 224 Courtland St., Apt. 327, Holiday Village, died Saturday morning, April 25, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for four years and was in the hospital for three weeks.
Born April 9, 1913, in Mayberry, W. Va., she was the daughter of Willie Albert Hardy and Emma Rigney Hardy.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she had retired from Dan River Inc. after 43 years of service.
She was a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church, the Senior Citizens Club and the Dan River Retired Employees Club.
Survivors include one sister, Thelma McBride of Danville.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Richard Cobb.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister, 138 Kemper Road.
