Jennifer Hodges
The funeral for Jennifer Rena Hodges, 17, 2243 Windridge Court, will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Frank Bowers. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
She died Thursday, April 23, 1998, from injuries sustained in an auto accident.
Born April 2, 1981, in Danville, she was a daughter of Lee Hodges and Betty Worsham Hodges, who survive.
A life long resident of the Danville and Pittsylvania County area, she was a junior at Tunstall High School and was studying nursing at Pittsylvania County Vocational School.
She was a member of the Spanish Club at Tunstall High School.
In addition to her mother and father of the residence, survivors include a sister, Amanda Sha Hodges of the residence; a half-sister, Evonne Weatherford of Danville; and a half-brother, Deon Hodges of Danville.
She was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Edith Hodges and Robert Shelton Hodges; and her maternal grandparents, Doris Worsham and Murriel Worsham Sr.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
John Jackson
ALTON - John Owen Jackson, 80, of Harmony Road, died Friday, April 24, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Nov. 5, 1917, in Halifax County, he was the son of Martin F. Jackson and Lizzie C. Jackson.
He was a retired maintenance worker with the Halifax County School Board.
He was a member of Alton Baptist Church.
Survivors include a brother, James F. Jackson of Alton.
A graveside service will be conducted 3 p.m. today at the Alton Baptist Church cemetery by Dr. Phillip Duckett. The family will receive friends at the home of Danny Jackson, 1014 Traynham Grove Road, Alton.

Hallie Johnson
ALTAVISTA - Hallie Scott Johnson, 80, of Route 2, died Friday, April 24, 1998, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born July 16, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Johnson Scott and Julie Dove Scott.
She was a member of Christian Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was retired from Burlington Industries.
She was married
to Howard Robey Johnson, who predeceased her.
Survivors include two daughters, JoBett J. Eidson and Joyce Ann Johnson, both of Altavista; one brother, Clifton "Sammy" Scott of Vinton; three sisters, Lois S. Sheppard of Altavista, Jean S. Witt of Moneta; and Barbara S. Bernard of Baltimore; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Christian Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Dennis Nichols. Burial will be in Altavista Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at Finch & Finch Funeral Home, Altavista, from 7-8:30 tonight. At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence.
Essie Moore
Essie Lee Moore, 76, 1129 Ferry Road, died Saturday, April 25, 1998, at her residence. She had been in declining health for one year.
Born Feb. 22, 1922, in Chesterfield, S.C., she was the daughter of Thomas Lee Moore and Lillie Edding Moore.
She had spent most of her life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County area. She worked for Johnson Drug Store on Riverside Drive for nearly 30 years before retiring.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Claude Moore and Frank Moore.
Survivors include one son, Charlie Moore of the residence; one sister, Carrie M. Moore of Danville; two brothers, Willard Moore of Danville and James Moore of Odenton, Md.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Linwood R. Hairfield Sr. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Recie Reynolds
Recie P. Reynolds, 72, 19257 Franklin Turnpike, died Saturday, April 25, 1998, at Norfolk General Hospital.
Born July 23, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Reynard Pickeral and Hettie Mae Atkinson.
She spent most of her childhood in Danville, and later moved to Hampton. She returned to Danville 30 years later, in 1976. A housewife, she was also a member of Liberty Baptist Church.
She was predeceased by her husband, E.T. Reynolds, and her parents.
Survivors include one son, Roland B. Reynolds of Carrolton; two daughters, Lucy R. Albury of Silverdale, Wash., and Carolyn R. Watson of Chesapeake; three brothers, Alvin Pickeral, Leonard Pickeral, and George Pickeral, all of Providence, N.C.; three sisters, Helen P. Wilson of Danville, Rena P. Kirks and Ruby P. Griffin, both of Providence, N.C.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Louis Slayton
LONG ISLAND - Louis McArthur Slayton, 49, 5076 Buffalo Road, died Friday, April 24, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born July 12, 1948, in Halifax County, he was the son of Howard T. Slayton and Lona Slayton, who survives.
Prior to his retirement on disability, he was employed by Lynchburg Foundry. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.
He was a member of First Buffalo Baptist Church, Long Island.
He was predeceased by one brother, Willie Slayton, and one sister, Margaret Thornton.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Gloria M. Slayton of the residence; one son, Louis L. Slayton of Gladys; one daughter, Lavinia Jones of Bomholer, Germany; two step-daughters, Sharnette Monroe of Charlotte, N.C. and Tiffany Monroe of Long Island; one step-son, Dante Monroe of Long Island; four brothers, Ezekiel Slayton of Nathalie, David Slayton, Sterling Slayton and Calvin Slayton, all of Long Island; two sisters, Ollie Gilbert of Gladys and Eliza Mae Issacs of Long Island; two grandchildren; and three-step grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from First Buffalo Baptist Church by the Rev. Melvin Palmer and the Rev. C.E. Rhodes. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Hester Smith
Hester Smith, 89, died on April 23, 1998, beloved mother of Marvin H. Smith and his wife, Dot, of Lanham, Md., grandmother of Larry W. Smith of BelAir, Md. and Nancy Smith Dove of Davidsonville, Md.; three sisters, Pearl McGuire of Alexandria, Va., Frances Newman and Betty Ruth Snead of Danville, Va.; and two brothers, Jim Stephens of Ridgeway, Va. and Alfred Tom Stephens of Mount Airy, N.C.
She is also survived by three great-granddaughters and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Carl W. Smith, and five brothers and one sister.
Relatives and friends may call at The Robert E. Evans Funeral Home, Inc., Rt. 450 and Racetrack Rd, Bowie, Md. on Monday, April 27, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 1998 at the Grace Baptist Church, 7210 Racetrack Road, Bowie, Md. at 11 a.m. Interment
will be at George Washington Memorial cemetery, Riggs Road, Adelphi, Md.
Howard Stokes
Howard Henry Stokes, 68, 448 Church Ave., Lot 2, died Saturday, April 25, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for three years.
Born Dec. 19, 1929, in Danville, he was the son of Willie Clinton Stokes and Fannie Scott Stokes Dalton.
He was married
to Mildred Burke Stokes, who survives.
He served in the Navy during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War, until he retired.
He spent most of his life in the military and in Danville. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 1097, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 647, the Fleet Reserve Association and the Military Order of the Cootie.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, William H. Stowe Jr. of Salem, Ore.; one daughter, Lorrie Stokes of Salem, Ore.; three step-sons, Gary E. Jones of Birmingham, Ala., the Rev. Johnnie Jones of Pasadena, Texas and Ricky W. Jones of Blairs; one step-daughter, Sandra J. Taylor of Brosville; one brother, Clinton W. Stokes of Danville; three sisters, Dorothy Hannum of Caldwell, Ohio, Barbara Bailey of Danville and Shirley Bowes-White of Williamsburg; two grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and one great-step-grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Schoolfield cemetery by the Rev. Johnny R. Jones. Military honors will be performed by American Legion Post No. 325's Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his stepdaughter, Sandra and Donald Taylor, 2277 Whispering Pines Road, Brosville.

'Larry' Dalton
Lawrence D. "Larry" Dalton, 94, of 308 Dogwood Drive, died Sunday morning, April 26, 1998, at his residence.
He was born on Jan. 7, 1904, in Gretna, a son of George D. Dalton and Itasca J. Dalton.
He was married
on Feb. 25, 1939, to Ethel Robertson Dalton, who died August 28, 1988.
He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.
He is survived by a daughter, Gwendolyn D. Millner of Danville; a brother, Claude J. Dalton of Cleveland, Tenn.; tand wo sisters, Gracie D. Sours and Ora D. Hodge, both of Danville.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Lyle H. Dalton and Orell D. Dalton, and two sisters, Leona D. Dalton and Kate D. Pribble.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from Trinity United Methodist Church by the Rev. Levi Stroud. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The body was returned to the home Sunday afternoon, where it will rest until Tuesday. Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and the family will receive friends at the residence, 308 Dogwood Drive.
Gladys Hardy
Gladys Ivey Hardy, 85, 224 Courtland St., Apt. 327, Holiday Village, died Saturday morning, April 25, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for four years and was in the hospital for three weeks.
Born April 9, 1913, in Mayberry, W. Va., she was the daughter of Willie Albert Hardy and Emma Rigney Hardy.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she had retired from Dan River Inc. after 43 years of service.
She was a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church, the Senior Citizens Club and the Dan River Retired Employees Club.
Survivors include one sister, Thelma McBride of Danville.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Richard Cobb.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister, 138 Kemper Road.
