Elsie Chappell
SOUTH BOSTON - Elsie Moore Chappell, 67, 3026 Ball Park Loop Road, Halifax, died Thursday, April 30, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born in Halifax County on Oct. 11, 1930, she was the daughter of Clarence Cornelius Moore Sr. and Annie Ruby Jennings Moore.
She was a member of Union United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one son, Theron Allen (T.A.) Chappell III of Nathalie; two daughters, Patricia Chappell Wiley of Powhatan and Barbara Mickles of Richmond; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Agnes Moore Seamster and Jean Moore Hazelwood of Halifax; three brothers, Harold G. Moore and Clarence C. Moore Jr., both of Clarksville and Douglas Lee Moore of Keswick.
She was predeceased by one brother, Riley Claiborne Moore.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Carl Hudson. Burial will take place in Union United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home today from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times at the home of her sister, Agnes Seamster, 2210 Ball Park Loop Road in Halifax.
Marietta Cordell
MYRTLE BEACH - Marietta Smith Cordell, 59, of Ocean Creek Drive, died Thursday, April 30, 1998, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C.
She was predeceased by her husband, H. Edward Cordell Jr.
Born June 19, 1938, in Hawthorne, N.J., she was the daughter of Alfred P. Smith and Gertrude Veldhuis-Kroeze Smith.
She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a B.S. in occupational therapy.
A resident of Danville from 1961 to 1992, she served on the board of directors of the Danville Area Humane Society and the Mental Health Association.
She was chairperson of the After Care Social Group, and was an active member and a past county chairman and vice-chairman of the Republican Party.
She served as a police auxiliary member from 1980 to 1984.
She moved to Myrtle Beach in 1992 and resided at Ocean Creek Plantation.
She was a member of Risen Christ Lutheran Church where she served on the board for social ministry and the board for the Lutheran Day School.
Survivors include two sons, Edward "Paul" Cordell of Danville and "Mark" Harold Cordell of Myrtle Beach; one daughter, Julia St. Clair Cordell Hosmer of Monroe; a sister, Nancy Prout of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Risen Christ Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Red House Presbyterian Church cemetery in Semora, N.C., by the Rev. Al Kresken.

Lawrence Everett
HAMPTON - Lawrence Keenan Everett, 68, died Thursday, April 30, 1998.
Born in Detroit, Mich., he lived in Danville for 22 years before moving to Hampton, where he lived for 46 years.
He was a foreman in 032 welding services at Newport News Shipbuilding, retiring in 1988 after 35 years.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of the Progressive Club, a former member of the Moose Lodge Chapter 1119 and a member of the North Carolina Beach Buggy Association.
He was a member of the Methodist Church.
preceded in death by his parents, Vernie and John Everett Sr., Mr. Everett is survived by his wife, Colleen P. Everett; his son, Barry Lee Everett and his wife, Gail, of Lunchburg; his grandchildren, Brandon Lee Everett and Brian Lee Everett; his brother J.C. Everett Jr. and his wife, Dot, of Dry Fork; and nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 3-4:30 p.m. Sunday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel beginning at 4 p.m. by the Rev. Ruth M. Burgess.
The burial service will be 3 p.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park in Danville by the Rev. Levi Stroud Jr.

Wilbert Harris
NEW YORK - Wilbert Morris Harris, 79, of New York died Sunday, April 26, at Calvary Hospital, Bronx, New York.
Born in Charlotte, N.C., he was the son of the late Robert A. Harris and Willie C. Ricketts.
He was married
to Gracie E. Harris.
He was a member of the Travel Rest Baptist Church where he served as deacon.
He is survived by two sons, Wilbert Harris and Robert Harris; two daughters, Mildred Scott and Yvonne Henderson; a stepson, Marcellus Arnold; a sister, Avis Glenn.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at the Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. H.R. Surgeon. There will be a one-half hour wake at the church prior to the services.

Dorothy Mann
Dorothy Elizabeth Holshouser Mann, wife of Gene Mann, formerly of Danville, who died Nov. 17, 1992, will be re-entomobed today at 10 a.m. in Leemont cemetery.
Family includes her husband, Gene Mann of Hobe Sound, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Lynwood Mann of Danville; and sister-in-law, Hazel Doolin, of Danville.
The family received friends Friday night at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
John Powell
John Edward Powell, 81, of 322 Southland Drive, died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after an extended illness.
Born Sept. 27, 1916, in Halifax County, he was the son of John Edward Powell Sr. and Annie Lovelace Powell.
He was employed for over 40 years by Universal Leaf Tobacco Company. During part of the time he was plant manager at Virginia Tobacco Company and Southern Processors until his retirement. He was a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church, where he had served on the Administrative Board.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret H. Powell of the home; a daughter, Gail Bass of Danville; a son, John E. Powell III, of Halifax County; two sisters, Louise P. DeVito of Richmond and Virginia P. Swisher of Bethesda, Md.; two brothers, Nathaniel T. Powell of Raleigh, N.C., and William M. Powell of Athens, Ga.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today from Highland Burial Park with Rev. Richard Cobb officiating. Visitation was at Townes Funeral Home on Friday from 7-8:30 p.m.
Della Scearce
Della Watkins Scearce, 85, 17 Doolittle St., died Friday morning, May 1, 1998, at her residence after a five month decline in health.
Born in Martinsville Dec. 25, 1912, she was the daughter of Frank Watkins and Lillie Reynolds Watkins.
She was predeceased by her husband, Luther T. Scearce, who died Nov. 28, 1975.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she was retired from Dan River Inc. as an inspector after 43 years of service.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Aaron of Danville; one brother, Albert Watkins of Danville; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Clyde F. George.
The family will be at the residence.

Paul Shelton
CHATHAM - Paul Marshall "Papa" Shelton, 82, of 228 Whittle Street, died Thursday afternoon, April 30, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 15, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of George Shelton and Ellen S. Shelton. He was owner and operator of Shelton's Saddlery in Chatham, a member of the International Christian Businessmen Committee, and a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church. He was inducted into the American Saddle Horse Association Hall of Fame in 1997.
He was pre-deceased by a son, Jerry Lee Shelton. He was married
to Judith Giles Shelton, who died Sept. 1, 1995.
Survivors include three daughters, Kitty Ann Anderson of Danville, Ellen S. Commodore of Cary, N.C., and Judy G. Wheeler of Austin, Texas; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Frank Fuller. Burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Chatham. The family will receive friends Saturday 7-8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of his daughter, Kitty Ann Anderson, 118 Clarendon Circle.
Jimmy Taylor
Jimmy A. Taylor Sr., 54, 2342 Red Marshall Rd., Pelham, N.C., died Friday, May 1, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 6, 1943, in Smithfield, N.C., he was the son of John Dave Taylor and Gladys West Taylor.
He was married
to Beatrice H. Taylor, who survives.
He worked at Dan River Inc. and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Other survivors include two sons, Jimmy A. Taylor Jr. and John David Taylor Sr. of Pelham; four sisters, Deborah T. Chilton of Pelham, Dianne T. Emerson of Danville, Janet T. Garza of Yanceyville and Patsy T. Rickman of Cary, N.C.; two brothers, Wayne Stuart of Cary, N.C., and Johnny R. Taylor of Greensboro, N.C.; and 12 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the residence.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, Jimmy Taylor Jr., at 2268 Red Marshall Rd., Pelham.

Jessie Waddell
Jessie Willard Waddell, 78, 1232 Kentuck Road, died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, at his home.
Born April 12, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Horace Waddell and Lena Gun Waddell.
He was married
to Delilah Gunn Waddell, who survives.
He worked for the Southern Railroad and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Other survivors include three daughters, Mattie Motley of Danville, Betty Williams of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Paula Garrett of Creedmoor, N.C.; three sons, Jessie A. Waddell of Holly Springs, N.C., Derrick M. Waddell of Clayton, N.C., and Stan A. Waddell of Dallas; one brother, John Waddell of Norfolk; two sisters, Mary Murphy of Danville and Sue Allen of Norfolk; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas Johnson with burial in the Bethel Baptist Curch cemetery.
The family will be at the residence.

Alvin Averette
Alvin Gene "Lil Boy" Averette Jr., 21, 1318 North Main St., died Wednesday, April 29, 1998 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 4, 1977, in Danville, he was the son of Alvin G. Averett Sr. and Gloria Cunningham Averett.
He was predeceased by his grandparents, Elijah Cunningham and Geneva Cunningham.
In addition to his parents, survivors include one daughter, A'aleigha Averette of Danville; two sisters, Alisha Gail Averette and Allison Averett, both of Danville; one brother, Alkwan Gemaine Averett, of Danville; grandparents, Thomas Wilkins and Loretta Wilkins of Danville; two great-grandmothers, Bernice Harris of Danville and Ella W. Jeter of Chatham.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
Richard Farmer
Richard Tap Farmer, 62, 776 Melvin Wrenn Road, Providence, N.C., died Saturday, May 2, 1998 at his residence. He had been in declining health for two years.
Born Aug. 31, 1935, in Halifax County, he was the son of Tap Binford Farmer and Betty Walker Durham, who survives.
He was predeceased by his wife, Jane Brooke Farmer, who died Dec. 20, 1993.
Most of his life was spent in Danville. He worked for Dan River Inc. for 45 years.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his mother of Danville, Va., survivors include one son, Michael Thomas Farmer of Danville; two daughters, Teresa Crumpton of Danville and Janet Boyd of Eden, N.C.; one brother, William "Billy" Farmer of Ringgold; three sisters, Paulette Sinclair, Rose Mae Tate and Betty Allgood, all of Danville; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Carl Burger. Interment
will be at Highland Burial Park.
