Annie Dodson
Annie Mae Barber Dodson, 74, 149 Graymont Place, died Monday, May 4, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was born Feb. 22, 1924, in Milton, N.C.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph A. Dodson III of Hamilton Township, N.J., and Albert K. Dodson of Danville; and three daughters, Dale Rodgers of Willingboro, N.J., and Elizabeth Fairfax of Hamilton, Ohio, and Geneva Dodson of Linden, N.J.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel by Apostle Joseph H. Adams. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
There will be a viewing from 4-8 tonight at the funeral home.
The family will be at the residence.
Latney Fowlkes
DRY FORK - Latney Leland Fowlkes, 67, 1632 Dry Fork Road, died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Durham, N.C.
Born Aug. 5, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Gary Lucas Fowlkes and Elsie Mills Fowlkes, who survives.
He was married
to Iris Mitchell Fowlkes, who survives.
He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. He served in the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Dry Fork, survivors include six daughters, Toni F. Adams, Denise F. Alverson, April F. Myrick and Starlett F. Adams, all of Danville, and Mary E. Fowlkes of Dry Fork and Debra F. Simpson of Gretna; a son, Latney M. Fowlkes of Dry Fork; two sisters, Barbara Waller of Dry Fork and Martha Shelton of Chatham; two brothers, Randall Fowlkes of Roxboro, N.C., and Norris Fowlkes of Kernersville, N.C.; and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Roger Collins. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Dry Fork.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, Chatham, and other times at the residence of his daughter, Toni F. Adams, 2058 Franklin Turnpike.
Virginia Roberts
SUTHERLIN - Virginia Davis Roberts, 84, 2977 Reeves Mill Road, died Monday, May 4, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a month of declining health and a week in the hospital.
Born April 27, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James Murray Davis and Virginia Chaney Davis.
On March 27, 1937, she was married
to Edgar Nash Roberts, who died Aug. 5, 1974.
She had lived in the Laurel Grove community of Pittsylvania County for most of her life.
She was retired from the F.W. Woolworth company, where she had worked for a number of years. She had worked for the former Burger Barn in the Kentuck community after her retirement.
She was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by seven brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Laurel Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Bill Soyars and the Rev. Mark Blair. Interment
will be Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence.
Sarah Alderson
Sarah Lewis Alderson, 95, of Oak Level community, died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 22, 1902, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Jasper C. Lewis and Carolyn Henderson Lewis.
She was married
to Walter Bennett Alderson, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Ingram United Church of Christ.
Survivors include a daughter, Neva Alderson Ferrell of Halifax; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. John Wilder. Burial will be in Mount Vernon cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7:30-9 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Neva Ferrell, 2009 Oak Level Road.
Romie Berger
CHATHAM - Romie Berger, 85, 3168 Bearskin Road, died Monday, May 4, 1998, at Piney Forest Health Care in Danville.
Born Aug. 12, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Haze Berger and Lester Robertson Berger.
He was a retired farmer and was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by a niece, Eunice Berger Davis of Chatham.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Callands Baptist Church by the Rev. Obadele St. George. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Eunice Berger Davis, 3168 Bearskin Road, Chatham.

Lucy Dyer
SOUTH BOSTON - Lucy Belle New Dyer, 81, 111 Carrington St., died Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 28, 1916, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Adrian Floyd New and Lizzie Baker Landrum.
She was a retired nurse's aide for Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Survivors include two daughters, Rochelle Rudder of South Boston and Joanne Hudson of Oriental, N.C.; three sons, Ralph Dyer and Grant Dyer, both of South Boston, and Billy Dyer of Ringgold; a sister, Maggie Jones of Roxboro, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Robert I. Heim. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, 111 Carrington St.
Walter Gibson
DRY FORK - Walter Clarence Gibson, 72, 5517 Dry Fork Road, died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 22, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Jabe Gibson and Bonnie Hayden Gibson.
He was first married
to Edna Stowe Gibson, who died in 1982. On April 21, 1984, he was married
to Sylvia Hunt Gibson, who survives.
He was a member of Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church, a charter member of Dry Fork Ruritan Club, where he served on the board of directors, and a charter member of Dry Fork Volunteer Fire Department, where he served on the board of directors.
He was a truck driver for Dan River Mills for 31 years until he retired.
In addition to his wife of Dry Fork, survivors include a daughter, Laurie G. Pritchett of Danville; two sons, Walter Gary Gibson of Vero Beach, Fla., and Jeffrey Craig Gibson of Bronx, N.Y.; six sisters, Mary Martin of Portsmouth, Mildred Rowland and Reba Midkiff, both of Gretna, and Elsie Blevins of Danville and Ruth Chamberlain of Salisbury, Md., and Joanne Giles of Chatham; three brothers, James A. Gibson of Danville, Elvin Gibson of Tampa, Fla., and Nelson Gibson of Lynchburg; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Rither Gibson.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Roger Collins and the Rev. Cecil Coates. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

James Jarrett
James Anderson Jarrett, 88, 34 Elizabeth St., died Wednesday evening, May 6, 1998, in the emergency room at Danville Regional Medical Center after eight years of declining health.
Born Sept. 14, 1909, in Danville, he was the son of Patrick Henry Jarrett and Rosa Verna Rhodnizer Jarrett.
He was first married
to Nora Reed Jarrett, who died in February 1958. He was later married
to Anna Lucille Gibson Jarrett, who survives.
A life long resident of Danville, he worked in the labor relations division at Dan River, Inc. He was a graduate of Danville Military Institute (DMI).
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, James D. Jarrett of Danville; a daughter, Dorothy J. Walton of Ferrum; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by a son, Robert A. Jarrett, who died in 1982.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. J. Richard Markham. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Russell Owen
Russell Harmon Owen, 89, 11009 Martinsville Hwy., died Wednesday afternoon, May 6, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after five months of declining health and 10 days in the hospital.
Born April 19, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Thomas Madison Owen and Nora Shumate Owen.
He was married
to Elizabeth Frances Calvert Owen, who survives.
He had made his home in the Brosville community for his entire life.
He worked as an automobile salesman for many years before becoming owner and operator of Owen's Kennell at Brosville.
He was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Julian R. Owen of Brosville; two sisters, Maggie Owen Soyars and Zella Owen Inman, both of Brosville; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the church, and other times at the residence of his son, Julian Owen, 11080 Martinsville Hwy.

Ida Terry
GREENWOOD, S.C. - Ida Roach Terry, 85, 1110 Marshall Road, died Thursday, April 30, 1998, at Wesley Commons in Greenwood.
Born March 14, 1913, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of William Lawson Roach and Effie David McCollum Roach.
She was married
to Joel Leslie Terry, who predeceased her.
She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Anderson, where she was a Sunday school teacher in the primary department, a member of UMW and a member of Mary O. Holler Sunday School Class.
She was a former owner of Ida R. Terry Antiques of Anderson.
Survivors include two sons, John D. Terry Sr. of Pelzer and Joel L. Terry of Williamsburg, Va.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by a son, William Meredith Terry.
Memorial services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday, May 4, 1998, at the Heritage House of Greenwood Methodist Home. Entombment was at 3 p.m. in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Anderson.

Iola Fulton
PAMPLIN - Iola Jane Mathis Fulton, 85, formerly of Danville and Pamplin, died Thursday morning, May 7, 1998, at Hodges Manor in Richmond.
Born in Fries, she was a daughter of Frederick Wesley and Carrie Messer Mathis.
She was married
to Roscoe F. Fulton, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Piney Ridge United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mozelle "Bootsy" F. Duff of Richmond; a sister, Ann Brooks of Lynchburg; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Robinson Funeral Home, Appomattax, by the Rev. George Riggins. Burial will be in Piney Ridge United Methodist Church cemetery.
