Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Elija Pointer

ALTON - Elija Pointer, 69, 1050 Sparks Trail, died Monday evening, May 4, 1998, at Veteran's Hospital in Durham, N.C.

Born Sept. 4, 1928, in Halifax County, he was a son of Samuel and Eliza Brandon Pointer.

He was first married to Danesha Scott, who predeceased him. He was later married to Georgianna Wilson, who also predeceased him.

He was educated in the public schools of Halifax County and served during the Korean War.

He was employed by Southern Processors Tobacco Factory.

Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Louise Pointer of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; four sisters, Ada Wenstly and Juanita Brewer, both of Alton, Mary Brandon of Brown Summitt, N.C., and Louise Sparks of the residence; four brothers, Mac Pointer and Lark Pointer, both of New York, and John Pointer and Samuel Pointer, both of Alton; and three stepdaughters and four stepsons.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at the Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. H.R. Surgeon. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

There will be a viewing from 12-8 p.m. today at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel, Semora, N.C.

The family is at the residence.

Bill L. Andrews

GRETNA - Billipps Layfaette Andrews, 71, 324 Ray Mill Road, died Friday, May 8, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 3, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Mark Andrews and Mattie Reynolds Andrews.

He was married to Helen Shelton Andrews, who survives.

He served during the Korean Conflict, was a retired mechanic with Gretna Tractor and was a member of Zion United Methodist Church.

He was also a member of Modern Woodmen of the World and a lifetime member of Butcher Hollow Hunt Club, Inc.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include his son, Quentin "Buck" Andrews of Altavista; a daughter, Scarlette Andrews of Las Vegas, Nev.; a stepdaughter, Paulette F. Fretwell of Ocoee, Tenn.; three brothers, Joseph H. Andrews and Jackie W. Andrews, both of Gretna, and Herman O. Andrews of Hurt; two sisters, Minnie Parker and Arlene Bowling, both of Gretna; two grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Cedric Andrews; and a sister, Anna A. Meadows.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jess Staton and Ramsey Taylor. Burial will be in the Andrews Family cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Willie Burnette

HURT - Willie Christopher Burnette, 83, 107 Prospect Road, died Friday, May 8, 1998, at Autumn Care in Altavista.

Born June 17, 1914, in Wythe County, he was the son of Elza Jethro and Nancy Maxey Burnette.

He was married for 61 years to Virginia Stevens Burnette, who survives.

He was a member of Presbyterian Church of Altavista, and was a retired employee of Cannon Mills, Kannapolis, N.C.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Leon Burnette of Danville, Clarence Burnette of Lynch Station and John Burnette of Rustburg; three daughters, Peggy Byrd of Altavista, and Brenda Winn and Nancy Blanks, both of Pelham, N.C.; a sister; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday in Altavista Memorial Park by the Rev. Kirby Smith.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Finch & Finch Funeral Home, Altavista, is in charge of arrangements.

Minnie Harris

CHESTERFIELD - Minnie Hungate Harris, 94, 7819 Little Ridge Court, died Thursday afternoon, May 7, 1998, at Lucy Corr Nursing Home, Chesterfield, where she had resided for four years.

Born Oct. 3, 1903, in Danville, she was the daughter of William Thomas Hungate and Marcella Pugh Hungate.

She was married to Samuel Justice Harris, who died in October 1968.

She had spent her life in the Danville, Newport News, Norfolk and Richmond areas. She was a retired kindergarten school teacher, teaching in Ft. Eustis.

She was a member of Denbigh Presbyterian Church in Newport News and was a former member of Toastmasters of America.

Survivors include two sons, Samuel Justice Harris III of Los Angeles and Charles W. Harris of Chesterfield; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dana Hunt. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Agnes Kent

Agnes Powell Kent, 92, 243 Mountain View Ave., died Friday morning, May 8, 1998, at her residence.

Born April 15, 1906, in Blackstone, she was a daughter of Richard Powell and Ida Jones Powell.

On June 13, 1934, she was married to Dr. E. Budge Kent, who died May 25, 1978.

She was a graduate of William and Mary College. She was a former teacher at Spring Garden School in Pittsylvania County.

She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, the Wednesday Club and Lady Astor Garden Club.

Survivors include a son, E. Budge Kent Jr. of Danville; a daughter, Mason K. Harris of Tallahassee, Fla.; four brothers, Glenn Powell of Sutherland, Gene Powell of Norfolk, Jack Powell of Blackstone and Walter L. Powell of Mechanicsville; four sisters, Billie P. Hudgins and Florence P. Kelley, both of Blackstone, and Nancy P. Hardaway of South Pasadena, Calif., and Betty P. Elmore of Pulaski; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

She was also predeceased by two brothers, James Powell and Richard Powell; and two sisters, Kitty B. Glenn and Frances P. Burch.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jay Ashby.

The family will receive friends 5-6:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home.

John Martin

SOUTH BOSTON - John Randolph Martin, 63, 304 McKinney St., died Thursday, May 7, 1998, at his residence.

Born Aug. 11, 1934, in Halifax County, he was a son of Willie Herbert Martin and Erma Compton Martin.

He was a member of Scottsburg Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include two foster daughters, Susan Martin Harris and Leslie Martin Yeatts, both of South Boston; six sisters, Janie Brooks and Grey Clayton, both of Petersburg, and Judy Martin and Betty Jean Martin, both of South Boston, and Evelyn Suitt of Timberlake, N.C., and Brenda Hancock of Halifax; a brother, Thomas Lee Martin of Halifax; and a half brother, Willie Herbert Martin Jr. of Danville.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Scottsburg Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Phillips. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery, Scottsburg.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Aubrey Powers Sr.

DUBLIN - Aubrey Thornton Powers Sr., 84, 8 Armstrong St., died Thursday evening, May 7, 1998, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Born June 4, 1913, in Danville, he was the son of John Robert Powers and Mary Sue Owens Powers.

He was married to Rosa Mae Baugh Powers, who predeceased him.

He was retired from Burlington Industries after 38 years of service.

He was a member of Lee Street Baptist Church in Danville.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Powers Hughes of Princeton, W.Va.; three sons, James L. Powers of Dublin, Marvin G. Powers of Parrott and Aubrey T. Powers Jr. of Radford; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was also predeceased by a sister and four brothers.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday at Bower Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Wayne Moye and the Rev. Michael Collins. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home on East Main Street, Dublin.

Roy Slayton

LYNCHBURG - Roy Lynwood Slayton, 74, 1815 Rivermont Ave., died Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at Guggenheimer Nursing Home in Lynchburg.

Born Oct. 9, 1923, in Halifax County, he was a son of James Slayton and Sylvia Jennings, who survives.

He was married to Roxie Slayton, who predeceased him.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Lynchburg City School Board as a custodian at Sheffield Elementary School.

He was a member of First Buffalo Baptist Church in Long Island, where he served on the trustee board.

In addition to his mother of Long Island, survivors include two sons, Bernard Slayton of Brussels, Belgium, and William Lynwood Slayton of Lynchburg; two brothers, Herbert Slayton of Long Island and Harry Slayton of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Mary Frances Tune of Long Island; and three grandchildren.

He was also predeceased by three brothers, James Slayton, E.B. Slayton and Samuel Slayton; and two sisters, Thelma Jackson and Juanita Barksdale.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday at First Buffalo Baptist Church by the Rev. Melvin Palmer. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Herbert Slayton, 4193 Buffalo Road, Long Island.

Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Donald Williams

RINGGOLD - Donald Ray Williams, 61, 462 Mountain Hill Road, died suddenly Wednesday, May 7, 1998, in the E.O.R. at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born May 6, 1937, in College Township, Center County, Penn., he was the son of Leonard Z. Williams and Ardus Evelyn Blair Williams.

He was married to Velma Hundley Williams, who died Oct. 29, 1997.

For more than 20 years, he had been a resident of Danville, where he was employed by Dameron Plumbing & Heating.

He served in the U.S. Marines.

He is survived by a stepson, Lloyd E. Slayton of Manasas.

A memorial service may be conducted at a later date.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 462 Mountain Hill Road.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

William Curlee

William Edwin Curlee, 218 Timberlake Drive, died Saturday morning, May 9, 1998, at the Danvile Regional Medical Center.

He was born August 28, 1919, in Spencer, N.C. He was the son of William T. Curlee and Nellie Mae Pickler Curlee.

He was a 1937 graduate of Boyden High School in Salisbury, N.C. He was retired from Southern Railway as a general yard master after 42 years of service.

He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church where he was a past-president of the Sunday school class and active in a number of church functions, including cooking brunswick stews and teaching a class in Christmont. He was a 50-year member of the Fulton Mason Lodge No. 99 in Salisbury.

On Aug. 28, 1938, he was married to Bonnie Belk Ramsey, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by two sons, Reginald R. Curlee of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Jospeh C. Curlee of Macon, Ga.; five sisters, Hazel C. Craddock, Margaret C. Clark, Alma C. Shores and Mary Ruth Rogers, all of Salisbury, N.C., and Elizabeth C. Gore of Charlotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. from Trinity United Methodist Church by the Rev. Levi Stroud Jr. Interment icon will be 3 p.m. Monday in the Chestnut Hill cemetery in Salisbury.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Eugene Ferguson

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Eugene Ferguson, 67, of 3605 18th Street N.E., died Saturday, May 9, 1998 at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Beavers Funeral Directors.
