Samuel Gentile
EVERETT, MASS. - Samuel C. "Sammy" Gentile, 81, died Monday, May 4, 1998, at his home, 123 Central Avenue.
He was born Oct. 12, 1916, in Everett.
Sammy was best known here for being centerfielder for the Danville Leafs in the Bi-State baseball league. In 1939 he was voted the most popular player and received a car from fans.
That same year he married
a local girl, Louise Burton, a former Miss Danville (1935), who died Feb. 18, 1988.
He was also predeceased by a son, Donald Gentile, in 1989.
In 1943, he played for the Boston Red Sox. That same year he joined the SeaBees and was stationed in Okinawa. While there he started a ball team for the servicemen.
Upon returning to his home town of Everett, he worked as the city's recreation director. He received many awards for his work with with the youth and senior citizens there.
Survivors include a son, Sammy Gentile Jr. of Everett; two daughters, Gail Brickley of Salem, and Patricia Giampietro of Everett; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, his brother-in-law, Ralph Burton, and his sister-in-law, Pegge Turner and their families, of Danville, Va.
The service was held Friday at Immaculate Conception Church in Everett, Mass.
Mary Harrell
DANVILLE - Mary "Lizzie" Harrell, 91, formerly of Kemper Road, died Friday evening, May 8, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center where she had resided for 11 years.
Born in Wythe County on February 19, 1907, she was a daughter of the late Cornelius Dickens and Jettie Vaughn Dickens.
She was married
to Robert Mack Harrell, who died in 1964. She was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Patricia Privette Ferris, and predeceased by three sisters and four brothers.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she worked for Dan River Inc. for many years in the spinning room, and was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include one son, Robert L. Harrell of Kansas City, Mo.; three daughters, V. Marie Privette of DeWitt, Sylvia "Pat" Coleman Lundy and Nancy Evans VanPelt, both of Danville; two brothers, Charles Jack Dickens and Luther Dickens, both of Danville; one sister, Lena Wright of Danville; ten grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jack Robertson. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7 to 8:30 tonight, and at other times will be at the residence of her daughter Pat Lundy, at 2865 Blairmont Drive.
Minnie Harris
CHESTERFIELD - Minnie Hungate Harris, 94, 7819 Little Ridge Court, died Thursday afternoon, May 7, 1998, at Lucy Corr Nursing Home, Chesterfield, where she had resided for four years.
Born Oct. 3, 1903, in Danville, she was the daughter of William Thomas Hungate and Marcella Pugh Hungate.
She was married
to Samuel Justice Harris, who died in October 1968.
She had spent her life in the Danville, Newport News, Norfolk and Richmond areas. She was a retired kindergarten school teacher, teaching in Ft. Eustis.
She was a member of Denbigh Presbyterian Church in Newport News and was a former member of Toastmasters of America.
Survivors include two sons, Samuel Justice Harris III of Los Angeles and Charles W. Harris of Chesterfield; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dana Hunt. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Agnes Kent
Agnes Powell Kent, 92, 243 Mountain View Ave., died Friday morning, May 8, 1998, at her residence.
Born April 15, 1906, in Blackstone, she was a daughter of Richard Powell and Ida Jones Powell.
On June 13, 1934, she was married
to Dr. E. Budge Kent, who died May 25, 1978.
She was a graduate of William and Mary College. She was a former teacher at Spring Garden School in Pittsylvania County.
She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, the Wednesday Club and Lady Astor Garden Club.
Survivors include a son, E. Budge Kent Jr. of Danville; a daughter, Mason K. Harris of Tallahassee, Fla.; four brothers, Glenn Powell of Sutherland, Gene Powell of Norfolk, Jack Powell of Blackstone and Walter L. Powell of Mechanicsville; four sisters, Billie P. Hudgins and Florence P. Kelley, both of Blackstone, and Nancy P. Hardaway of South Pasadena, Calif., and Betty P. Elmore of Pulaski; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
She was also predeceased by two brothers, James Powell and Richard Powell; and two sisters, Kitty B. Glenn and Frances P. Burch.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jay Ashby. Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Jospeh McDaniel
MARTINSVILLE - Jospeh Lawrence McDaniel, 61, of 611 Orchard Street, died Saturday, May 9, 1998, at his home.
He was born January 6, 1937 at Natural Bridge Station and was the son of the late Lawrence Henry McDaniel and Mildred Smith McDaniel.
He was retired from DuPont after 32 years, served in the U.S. Army, was a graduate of Emmanuel College and was a member of Patrick Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church where he served as a trustee, deacon, assistant choir director and Sunday school superintendent. He also served on the board of the Salvation Army and was on the advisory board of Good News Jail and Prison Ministry.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Nancy Stanton McDaniel of the home; a daughter, Patricia McDaniel Villarreal of Patrick Springs; a son, Randall Jospeh McDaniel of Danville; a sister, Thelma McDaniel Sperka of Natural Bridge Station; two brothers, Marvin H. McDaniel of Fredricksburg and James R. D. McDaniel of Roanoke; and two grandchildren.
A funeral service will held at 11 a.m. Monday at Patrick Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Jack R. Foley and Dr. Thomas R. McCann officiating.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the church. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bermuda Memorial Park in Chester, by the Rev. Todd W. Combee.
Robert Moore
CHATHAM - Robert Lee Moore, 82, 453 Climax Road, died Friday, May 8, 1998 at the residence.
Born March 11, 1916, in Pittsylania County, he was the son of Jimmy James Moore and Mary Sue Towler Moore.
He was married
to Dorothy Osborne Moore, who survives.
He was predeceased by one granddaughter.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include four sons, Thomas L. Moore of Chatham, Robert Glenn Moore of Gretna, Jimmy W. Moore of Chatham, Ronnie D. Moore of Gretna; five daughters, Louise M. Windley, Joann M. Barker and Callie M. Hogan, all of Chatham, Peggy M. Vencent of Blairs, and Bonnie M. Daniel of Gretna; two brothers, Raleigh Moore and Clyde Moore of Chatham; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, May 11, 1998 at Scott Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. James C. Abner and Curtis English. Interment
will be in Wagner Family cemetery in Climax.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Scott Funeral Home.
Stewart Smith Jr.
Stewart Smith Jr., 76, 558 Cleveland Street, died Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at his residence.
Born January 31, 1922, in Danville, he was the son of the late Stewart Smith Sr. and Hattie Pinchback Smith. He was married
to Mary Cornelia ferrell Smith who predeceased him.
He worked for John W. Daniel for many years.
Survivors include one son, Haywood Smith of Danville; one daughter, Sedalia Price of Danville; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three sisters, Thelma Ford of Sunnyside, N.Y., Catherine Smith, Barbara Smith and Gertude Smith, all of Danville.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Loyal Baptist Church by the Rev. Clarence Hairston. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with full military rites by Honor Guard Post 325.

MARTINSVILLE - Joseph Lawrence McDaniel, 61, died Saturday, May 9, 1998, at his home on 611 Orchard St., Martinsville.

Gloria Taylor
CHATHAM - Gloria Harris Taylor, 49, of 2415 Concord Ave., Richmond, and formerly of Chatham, died Friday, May 8, 1998, in the Medical College of Virginia Hospital, Richmond.
Born Dec. 14, 1948, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Wilford Buck Harris and Henrietta Carter Harris, who survive.
Prior to her retirement on disability, she was employed by Chatham Knitting Mill, and was a co-minister in the Word of Christ Ministries with her husband.
She was married
to Elder Larry Taylor, who survives.
In addition to her parents of Chatham, and husband of the residence, survivors include her maternal grandmother, Orney Payne of Chatham; six sisters, Elizabeth Lee and Joyce Terry, both of Baltimore, Anna Frances Hairston and Berline Harris Nelson, both of Chatham, Iris Davis of Lynchburg and Abigail Copland of Danville; and four brothers, Wilford Harris Jr. and Roy Harris, both of Chatham, Reed Harris of Danville and James T. Harris of Lynchburg.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. from the Little Mt. Zion Pentecostal Holiness Church, Chatham, by Elder Charles Lee with burial in New Jerusalem Holiness Church cemetery in Java. The family will receive friends at the residence of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Buck Harris, 389 Rison St., Chatham.

Leonard 'Cap' Allen
KEELING - Leonard Madison "Cap" Allen, 87, 11729 Old Richmond Road, died Monday, May 11, 1998, at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Rocky Mount after 18 months of declining health and a week in the hospital.
Born July 13, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Robert William Allen and Mattie Florence Hurt.
He was of the Baptist faith and was a retired farmer. He had lived most of his life in Keeling.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his half brother, Shorty Chumley of Altavista.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Roy Newton with military honors performed by American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the Frances Holland residence, 11837 Old Richmond Road, Keeling.
Lucille Billings
Lucille Short Billings, 71, 677 Arnett Blvd., Apt. 9A, died Sunday, May 10, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center after 18 months of declining health and five days at the center.
Born June 10, 1926, in Lancaster, S.C., she was a daughter of William O. Boyte Sr. and Mildred Vernett Lynn Boyte.
She was married
to Charles Harrison Billings, who survives.
She had lived in Great Falls, S.C., and later moved to Danville, where she retired from Dan River Mills.
She was a member of Woodberry Hills Baptist Church, VFW-Ladies Auxiliary and the Dan River Retirees Club.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Maxine S. Tolley and Susie S. Williams, both of Danville; a son, Bobby L. Short of Dry Fork; a brother, W. Oscar Boyte Jr. of Camden, S.C.; two sisters, Minnie B. Jackson and Peggy B. Roberts, both of Great Falls, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Glenn Short.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Lewis P. Harris and the Rev. Larry Roberts.

Emma Coleman
Emma Breeden Coleman, 86, 124 College Ave., died Monday, May 11, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 22, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Lee Andrew Breeden and Fannie Owen Breeden.
She was married
to W. Robert Coleman Jr., who died Aug. 12, 1992.
She attended Danville public schools and Averett College.
She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Edwin H. Coleman of Chatham and James R. Coleman of Kennesaw, Ga.; a sister, Lucy B. Henderson of Greensboro, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mountain View cemetery by Dr. Joey Faucette and the Rev. Linwood Daniel.
The family will receive friends 5:30-7 tonight at Townes Funeral Home.
