Doris Herndon
DRY FORK - Doris Whitlow Herndon, 68, 741 Tunstall High Road, died Sunday evening, May 10, 1998, at Stratford Health Center, where she had resided since April 1997. She had been in declining health since October 1996.
Born Feb. 9, 1930, in Bassett, she was a daughter of Posey Whitlow and Nannie Shelton Whitlow.
She had spent most of her life in Axton and was employed by Pulaski Furniture Company.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Wallace I. Herndon and Gregory L. Herndon, both of Martinsville; a daughter, Sheila H. Adkins of Dry Fork; three brothers, Ebb Whitlow, Junior Whitlow and Wesley Whitlow, all of Bassett; three sisters, Vickie Ingram and Dorothy Davis, both of Tallahassee, Fla., and Beatrice Bryant of Pensacola, Fla.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Roy David Herndon.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jack Robertson. Burial will be in the Herndon Family cemetery in Axton.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Sheila Adkins, 741 Tunstall High Road, Dry Fork.
Flossie 'Flo' McNichols
KEELING - Flossie Janet Goard "Flo" McNichols, 68, 3159 Malmaison Road, died Monday, May 11, 1998, at her residence after five years of declining health.
Born Aug. 4, 1929, in Dry Fork, she was a daughter of Hugh R. Goard and Maxie Manilla Elliott Goard.
On Dec. 15, 1947, she was married
to William Acree McNichols, who survives.
She was a member of Blairs Baptist Church, where she was a member of the church choir, Recycled Teens and WMU, and was a Sunday school teacher.
She lived most of her life in the Blairs community of Pittsylvania County.
She attended Stonewall Recreational Center. She was a graduate of Whitmell Farm Life High School.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Connie M. Jerman of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Kenneth McNichols of Blairs; a sister, Reedis G. Jones of Danville; two brothers, Hugh D. Goard of Independence, Wis., and Bob Goard of Dublin, Ga.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Terri Lynn McNichols, who died in January 1962.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Blairs Baptist Church by the Rev. Luther Lemon and the Rev. Melvin Winters. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence.
Selena Moore
CHATHAM - Selena Kendrick Moore, 56, 624 Oxford Road, died Monday, May 11, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born April 12, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Garry Malone Kendrick and Carrie Adkins Kendrick.
She was married
to Dempsey Lee Moore, who predeceased her.
She was a member of New Bethal Church Brethren and was employed at Ennis Business Forms for 35 years.
Survivors include a brother, Curtis E. Kendrick of Chatham; and two sisters, Rebecca K. Adkins of Chatham and Dorothy K. Adkins of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home by the Rev. Alvery Parr. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

Stephanie Saunders
RINGGOLD - Stephanie Renee Saunders, 23, 1556 Ringgold Depot Road, died Friday, May 8, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 1, 1974, in Danville, she was the daughter of James Lee Saunders and Audrey Davis Saunders.
She was employed by Piggy Wiggly Market in Highway 58 East for many years as a cashier.
In addition to her parents of the residence, survivors include a brother, Gary Saunders of Ringgold; her maternal grandmother, Gracie Davis of Danville; and her paternal grandparents, Annie Lee Saunders Askins of Baltimore and Willie and Julia Fitzgerald, both of Ringgold.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Howard Graves Sr. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Dixie Williams
VIRGINIA BEACH Dixie V. Williams, 70, 1673 Ocean Bay Drive, Virginia Beach, died Monday, May 11, 1998.
Born Sept. 19, 1927, in Galax, she was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl R. Bowyer.
She was a member of Beachlawn Baptist Church in Virginia Beach.
Survivors include her husband, William F. Williams of the residence; three daughters, Diana Palmer of Virginia Beach, Kathy Allen of Chesapeake and Lisa White of Snellville, Ga.; three brothers, Ernest Bowyer of Roanoke, Eldin Bowyer of Dry Fork and Jack Bowyer of Bristol; three sisters, Elizabeth Scearce and Carol Hall, both of Danville, and Jewel Makus of Pompano Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Scott B. Sigmon.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Townes Memorial Chapel by Richard Yates, pastor of Beachlawn Baptist Church, the Rev. George T. Stallings and Jonathan S. Palmer, grandson of Dixie Williams. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Joseph Guill
Joseph Guill, 84, died Saturday morning, May 9, 1998, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, N.C.
Born June 23, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Monroe Guill and Nannie Womack Guill.
He was married
to Evelyn Wade Simmons Guill, who died Aug. 19, 1983.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was a long-time member of Baptist Tabernacle.
He was a retired foreman of APAC, Danville division.
Survivors include three daughters, Mayse Sheffield of Greenville, N.C., and Etta Brown of Danville and Sue King of South Boston; two brothers, James D. "Jim" Guill of Blairs and Roger S. Guill of Danville; two sisters, Nannie Guill Kent and Bessie Guill Bliss, both of Danville; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was also predeceased by four brothers, Willie Guill, John Guill, Nathan Guill and Harvey Guill; and a sister, Mattie Womack.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 1998, at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham and the Rev. Bill Soyars. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Bob Lester
AXTON - Robert Judson Lester Sr., 73, 6418 Medical Center Road, died suddenly Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born May 27, 1924, in Washington County, he was a son of John Carson Lester and Vennie Stovall Lester.
On Dec. 26, 1952, he married
Ocie Motley Lester, who survives.
In 1952, he moved to Pittsylvania County, where he was a farmer in the Axton community.
He was a member of Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church, where he was chairman of the board of trustees and also attended VPI.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Robert Judson Lester Jr. of the residence; five sisters, Mary Heinke of Napa, Calif., and Nancy Leonard of Troutville, Laura Comey of Earlysville, Peggy Robinson of Glades Spring and Betty Cline of Abingdon; and five brothers, John Carson Lester Jr. of Forest, W.Z. Lester of Clover, Ned Lester of Blacksburg, Ted Lester of Meadowview and J.G. Lester of North Aurora, Il.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Linnie Arnett, Rochelle Lester and Eleanor Lester.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. Jeff Cannon.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence.
Delbra Erby
RICHMOND - Delbra Ann Erby, 45, 5911 Cricklewood Drive, Apt. C, died Monday, May 11, 1998, at her residence.
Born Aug. 22, 1952, in Danville, she was the daughter of Claude Totten and Madie Inge Totten.
She was married
to James R. Erby.
She received her education in Danville Public School System and graduated from Langston High School.
She joined Jones Chapel Baptist Church at an early age.
Survivors include two daughters, Dana Erby and Danita Erby, both of Richmond; her father, Claude Totten of Danville; her stepmother, Doris Totten; a brother, Claude Totten Jr. of Danville; two half brothers, Paul and Eric Totten; a half sister, Amy Totten; and a grandson.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at Jones Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Hayes McConnell. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her cousin, Angela Lea Wilson, 141 Leslie Lane.

Richard Haley Jr.
Richard William Haley Jr., 45, 3497 Horseshoe Road, died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a year of declining health and a day in the hospital.
Born Oct. 16, 1952, in Danville, he was a son of Richard William Haley Sr. and Mary Carter Haley, who survive.
On Aug. 25, 1973, he was married
to Kahne Evans Haley, who survives.
A life long resident of the Pittsylvania County area, he worked for Times Fiber Communications as a fine wire operator.
He was a member of North Main Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife and his mother and father, all of Danville, survivors include a brother, Mark Carter Haley of Farmville, N.C.; and a sister, Mary Haley Butler of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Jimmie Pruitt, the Rev. Kyle Flora and the Rev. Walter Yancey. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Margaret 'Peggy' Phelps
RUFFIN, N.C. - Margaret "Peggy" Phelps, 47, 276 Williamson Creek Road, died early Wednesday morning, May 13, 1998, at her residence.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the owner of Remedy Auto Repair.
Survivors include her husband, Gary Phelps of the residence; and a son, Raymond Martinez of Burlington.
A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday at the residence.
The family will receive friends at the residence immediately following the service.

Ruth Rowles
GRETNA - Ruth Hodnett Rowles, 86, died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 11, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James Hodnett and Neilie Motley Hodnett.
She was married
to Robert Claude Rowles, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Sheva Church of Christ and a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Elvin "Popeye" Rowles of Chatham and Claude "C.C." Rowles of Gretna; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by a son, Richard Leeward "Whit" Rowles; and a sister, Lula H. Haymore.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in the Hodnett Family cemetery by the Rev. Larry Owen.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, C.C. Rowles, 24100 Hwy. 29, Gretna.
