Herbert Belcher
PENHOOK - Herbert Wilson Belcher, 72, died Wednesday, May 13, 1998, in a Roanoke hospital.
Born Dec. 8, 1925, in Franklin County, he was a son of Arthur and Virginia Rigney Belcher.
He was married
to Marjorie Walker Belcher, who survives.
He was a retired tobacco farmer.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Dianne Lawrence of Penhook and Faye Belcher of Callands; three sons, Herbert F. "Frankie" Belcher, Otis W. Belcher and Donnie Belcher, all of Penhook; two brothers, Grady S. Belcher of Penhook and Tony W. Belcher of Richmond; a sister, Juanita B. Dudley of Rocky Mount; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Benjamin Belcher.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Flora Funeral Chapel, Rocky Mount, by the Rev. J.D. Hunt III. Burial will be in the Belcher Family cemetery.
Friends may call after 3 p.m. today with the family receiving friends from 7-8:30 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, S. Main Street, Rocky Mount.
Virginia 'Ticky' Duke
Virginia Clark "Ticky" Duke, 81, 168 Cedar Place, died at her residence.
Born May 4, 1917, in Danville, she was a daughter of Harry A. Clark and Virginia H. Clark.
She was married
to Reginald Warren Duke, who predeceased her.
She is survived by her sister, Barbara J. Clark of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church, Holbrook Street, by the Rev. Churn. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
There will be a viewing from 4-8 p.m. today at Beavers Funeral Directors.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Eugene Ferguson
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Eugene Ferguson, 67, 3605 18th St. North East, died at his residence.
He was born April 13, 1931.
He was married
to Julia Brooks Ferguson, who predeceased him.
Survivors include two daughters, Rhonda Ferguson of Lanham, Md., and Venitia Ferguson of Landover, Md.; a son, Doyle Ferguson of Washington; five brothers, George Ferguson, Percy Ferguson, Amos Ferguson, Robert Ferguson and Clarence Ferguson, all of Danville; three sisters, Mary Giggetts and Nan Beavers, both of Danville, and Myrtle Wilson of Seat Plesant, Md.; and two grandsons.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Kentuck Baptist Church, Ringgold, by the Rev. Jesse Fitz. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church prior to the service, and also at the residence of Floyd Giggetts, 865 Kentuck Road, Ringgold.
There will be a viewing from 4-8 p.m. today at Beavers Funeral Home.
Collie Gregory
ALTAVISTA - Collie William Gregory, 87, 1701 Eudora Lane, died Tuesday night, May 12, 1998, at his residence.
Born Sept. 15, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Gregory and Hettie Berger Gregory.
He was first married
to Eva J. Gregory, who predeceased him. He was later married
to Queen E. Gregory, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the U.S. Civil Service Department in Washington, D.C. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Cook & Harris United Holiness Church, Hurt, where he served as a trustee and a deacon.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Harold Gregory of Hurt; four stepsons, Todd Motley of Chatham, Ricky Motley of Altavista, Jerry Motley of Hurt and Thomas Motley of Brookneal; four stepdaughters, Patricia Moore and Lamancho Motley, both of Altavista, and Tunshihia Motley of Lynch Station and Easter Graves of Gladys; two sisters, Ionia Vest of Altavista and Leary Berger of Pittsville; 14 grandchildren and 22 step-grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by two sons, Ranell and Andrew Gregory; a daughter, Neveda Whitfield; a sister, Gracie Watkins; and a brother, Stanley Gregory.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by Elder Haywood Hunt. Burial will be in Cook & Harris United Holiness Church cemetery.

Harry Irby
GRETNA - Harry Pete Irby, 64, 1981 Blue Ridge Drive, died Thursday, May 14, 1998, at Stratford Health Center in Danville.
Born April 1, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Theadie Irby and Mary Thacker Irby.
He was married
to Betty B. Irby, who survives.
He was retired from Burlington Industries and was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Ricky Irby of Sacramento, Calif., and Alex Dale Irby of Hurt and Marke Allen Irby of Gautier, Miss.; two daughters, Wanda Purdy of Gretna and Tammy Brewer of Martinsville; two brothers, James W. Irby of Sealesville, N.C., and Gordon Irby of Gretna; three sisters, Mary Giles of Danville, and Hazel Irby and Ora Farmer, both of Gretna; and seven grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Clifton Irby and Grady Irby.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Sycamore Baptist Church by the Rev. John Muth and the Rev. James Tallent. Interment
will be in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Mary Jones
Mary Elizabeth Jones, 42, 427 Bradley Road, died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at the University of Virginia Hospital.
Born Oct. 13, 1955, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late James Robert Jones and Bertha Thompson, who survives.
In addition to her mother of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Latoya Jones and Tatonya Jones, both of Danville; a son, Roger Jones of Danville; eight sisters, Annie Chandler, Faye Jones and Wendy Jones, all of Danville, Nannie M. Jones of Halifax, Sara Robertson of Edward, N.C., and Marilyn Lee of Sutherlin, Martha Jones of Charleston, W.Va., and Patsy Dixon of Freeport, N.Y.; five brothers, James Jones of Vernon Hills, Johnny Carter and Jerry Jones, both of Danville, and Larry Jones and Marvin Jones, both of Charleston, W.Va.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by Bishop Walter J. Anderson. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence and also at 518 Claiborne St.
Bessie Sheridan
Bessie Sheridan, 84, died May 6, 1998, at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tenn., of lung cancer.
She is survived by a daughter, Jackie Sheridan; and four sisters, Clare Seigler of Beltone, S.C., and Virginia Warrick of Kingsport, Tenn., and Juanita Polk of Poquosin and Grace Tibbs of Danville.
Services were held Friday, May 8, 1998, in Tennessee.
Arrangements for a memorial service in Danville in June will be announced at a later date.
Ella Shively
Ella Ingram Shively, 87, 1236 Halifax Road, died Thursday morning, May 14, 1998, in the emergency room of Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 12, 1910, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Omar Ingram and Amanda Snead Ingram.
She was married
to Grover Milton Shively, who died April 29, 1983.
Since 1942, she had made her home in Danville.
She worked at Dan River, Inc., for many years in the weave room. She later managed High's Ice Cream at Sherwood Shopping Center, where she retired from.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include five daughters, Alease S. Breen of Williston, N.D., and Evonne S. Webb, Barbara J. Smith, Verlena S. Rigsby and Linda S. Chilton, all of Danville; four sons, Elvin R. Shively, James H. Shively and Grover G. Shively, all of Danville, and L. Richard Shively of Roanoke; two brothers, Leonard Ingram of Henry and Millard Ingram of Axton; 29 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was also predeceased by a son, John D. Shively; and two grandsons.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. W.L. Wade and the Rev. Paul Ray. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Evonne Webb, 1615 Halifax Road.
Rosa Walker
HALIFAX - Rosa Lee Walker, 86, died Sunday, May 10, 1998, at Southside Community Hospital in Farmville.
She was born Jan. 12, 1912, in Halifax County.
Survivors include two daughters, Millie Casper of Jetersville and Helen Chambers of Halifax; three sisters, Elizabeth Rogers of Bridgeport, Conn., and Bessie White and Hazel Fowlkes, both of Crew; a brother, Clifton White of Crew; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Banister Hill Baptist Church in Halifax by the Rev. William Carr. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Remains will lie in state an hour prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Helen Chambers, 121 Jackson St.

Vera Collins
AXTON - Vera Gibson Collins, 83, of Mountain Valley Road, died Friday morning, May 15, 1998, at Piney Forest Health Care Center, where she had resided since August 1996.
Born Aug. 4, 1914, in the Callands community of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Foard Gibson and Rosie Rigney Gibson.
She was married
to Wade Landon Collins, who died Jan. 5, 1979.
From 1943-1996, she had made her home in Axton, where she and her husband operated Collins Grocery on Hwy. 58 prior to her retirement.
She was a member of Leatherwood Baptist Church on Mountain Valley Road in Axton.
Survivors include three sisters, Essie Gibson Bryan, Lizzie Gibson Kendrick and Catherine Gibson Hopkins, all of Danville; and three brothers, Irvin Gibson of Cascade, Neal Gibson of Rocky Mount and Robert Gibson of Danville.
She was also predeceased by five brothers, Aubrey Gibson, Lee Bernard Gibson, Edward Gibson, Russell Gibson and Lenwood Gibson.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday in County Line Christian Church cemetery by the Rev. Mike Spence.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home.
