Susan Fulton

Susan Emerson Astin Fulton, 93, formerly of Pittsylvania County, died Sunday, May 10, 1998, at Palm Gardens Nursing Home, Sun City Center, Fla., after several years of declining health.

Born Aug. 9, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Albert Sidney Astin and Mamye Powell Astin.

She was married to Charles Smith Fulton, who predeceased her.

She had lived in the Danville area for a number of years and later moved to Norfolk. She lived in Norfolk until her failing health caused her to move to a nursing home in Sun City Center, Fla., in 1995.

She was a homemaker and a member of Park Place Methodist Church, Norfolk.

She was a past member of Wives of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Kaufman Brydan Chapter of Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include two daughters, Martha F. Ferrell of Sun City Center, Fla., and Agnes F. Morris of Daytona Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Margaret Dudley of Richmond and Carolyn Greenwood of South Boston; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was also predeceased by four sisters, Kate Blair, Elvira Merricks, Sally Dodd and Wilson Jamerson; and five brothers, Claude Astin, James Astin, Albert Astin Jr., Charles Astin and Ira Astin.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Wayne Crews.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the residence of Lucille Astin, 4241 Mt. Cross Road, and also other times at the residence of Lucille Astin.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Willis 'Pete' Griffin

RANDOLPH - Willis "Pete" Griffin, 81, died Thursday, May 14, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born March 1, 1917, in Pickens, S.C., he was the son of George W. Griffin and Zora Annis Griffin.

He was married to Rosetta Martin Griffin, who survives.

In addition to his wife of Randolph, survivors include a daughter, Annis G. Hunt of Huntersville, N.C.; two sons, Jerry C. Griffin of Charlotte Courthouse and Willis E. Griffen of Drakes Branch; a sister, Ethel G. Farmer of Easley, S.C.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday at Providence Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Courtney Coffer. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Powell Funeral Home.

Virginia McCormick

RINGGOLD - Virginia Everett McCormick, 73, 197 Milton Hwy., died Friday morning, May 15, 1998, at her residence after a brief illness.

Born Aug. 18, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Robert Lee Everett and Ella Martin Everett.

On Jan. 7, 1949, she was married to Frank M. McCormick, who died March 21, 1997.

She was a graduate of Schoolfield High School and Averett College. She worked at Dan River Mills in the payroll department. She and her husband were both owners and operators of McCormick Grocery, which they ran for 38-and-a-half years.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a daughter, Janice M. Randall of Durham, N.C.; a son, Randy McCormick of Santa Clara, Calif.; two brothers, Clyde Everett and Irvin "Bud" Everett, both of Providence, N.C.; and a sister, Mildred Everett Thompson of Richmond.

She was also predeceased by three brothers, Robert Lee Everett Jr., Earl Everett and Oliver Everett Sr.; and a sister, Nellie Everett Warren.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. David Henry.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Elizabeth Pollok

Elizabeth Stephens Pollok, 83, 133 Grove Park Circle, died Friday, May 15, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center.

Born March 18, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Ernest Stephens and Bettie Vernon Stephens.

On Dec. 9, 1937, she was married to Collins W. Pollok, who survives of the residence.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and Vesper Garden Club.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Joey Faucette. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Martha Shively

Funeral services for Martha Ella Ingram Shively, 87, 1236 Halifax Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. W.L. Wade and the Rev. Paul Ray. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

She died Thursday morning, May 14, 1998, in the emergency room of Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 12, 1910, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Omar Ingram and Amanda Snead Ingram.

She was married to Grover Milton Shively, who died April 29, 1983.

Since 1942, she had made her home in Danville.

She worked at Dan River, Inc., for many years in the weave room. She later managed High's Ice Cream at Sherwood Shopping Center, where she retired from.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include five daughters, Alease S. Breen of Williston, N.D., and Evonne S. Webb, Barbara J. Smith, Verlena S. Rigsby and Linda S. Chilton, all of Danville; four sons, Elvin R. Shively, James H. Shively and Grover G. Shively, all of Danville, and L. Richard Shively of Roanoke; two brothers, Leonard Ingram of Henry and Millard Ingram of Axton; 29 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

She was also predeceased by a son, John D. Shively; and two grandsons.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Evonne Webb, 1615 Halifax Road.

Bailey Anderson

ROANOKE - Walter Bailey Anderson, 79, 3804 Brandon Ave., S.W., died Saturday morning, May 16, 1998, in Brandon Oaks Retirement Community.

Born Sept. 21, 1918, in Red Oak, he was a son of Jessie Bailey Anderson and Willie Belle Wilmouth Anderson.

On Sept. 21, 1940, he was married to Inez Blair Anderson, who survives.

He was educated in the Charlotte County Public schools.

During World War II, he served in the 16th infantry of the U.S. Army and saw action at the Battle of the Bulge.

He moved to Danville in 1937 and was employed by Dan River Inc. for 47 years until he retired.

For more than 50 years, he was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, where he had served on the church board and was a member of Class 20.

He was also a charter member and past president of the Danville Evening Lions Club.

He had been a resident of Brandon Oaks since 1993.

In addition to his wife of Roanoke, survivors include two sisters, Catherine A. Ferrell of Midlothian and Thelma A. Fallen of Keysville; and a brother, Woodrow Anderson of Vero Beach, Fla.

He was predeceased by two brothers, John H. Anderson and Herman L. Anderson.

The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Jay Ashby and the Rev. Bob Ward. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery, where full military honors will be performed by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of W.T. Blairs Jr., 2537 Hinesville Road.

Elmer Fitz Sr.

Elmer Fitz Sr., 76, 3658 Highway 29 North, died Thursday, May 14, 1998, at his residence.

Born June 12, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Sam Fitz and Mandy Motley Fitz.

He was married to Naomi Harden Fitz, who survives.

He was educated in the Pittsylvania County Public School system, and was employed by Dibrell Brothers as a long distance truck driver for more than 30 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Betty Newman, Izetta Pearl Ferrell and Evone Naomi Fitz, all of Danville; four sons, Franklin Delano Fitz of New York, Elmer Fitz Jr. of Rocky Mount, Jermiah Fitz Sr. and Samuel Ray Fitz, both of Danville; one sister, Lois Fitz Woods of Danville; four brothers, Ted Fitz of Danville, William Fitz and Raymond Fitz, both of Dry Fork, and Bernard Fitz of Blairs; and several grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday from Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jesse Fitz. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Mildred Phifer Miller

Mildred Phifer Miller, 85, 3081/2 Ross Street, died Thursday evening, May 14, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 19, 1913, she was a daughter of Albert and Julia Mae Robinson Phifer.

She was married to William P. Miller, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, where she served in the senior choir and missionary circle.

She was also a member of Bubs of Unity Tents Lodge No. 423 and As You Like It Senior Citizens Club.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Davis Laundry.

She is survived by a son, William Percy Miller Jr. of Danville; a sister, Dorothy Watson of Cincinnati; three grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and seven step-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday from Trinity Baptist Church by the Rev. B. Smith. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

The remains may be viewed at L.H. Brooks & Bro. this afternoon.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Arnold Walters Van Hook

Arnold Walters Van Hook, 94, 307 Bellevue St., died Friday, May 15, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 20, 1903, in Caswell County, he was a son of David Van Hook and Martha Susan Gillespie Van Hook.

On Oct. 3, 1938, he was married to Evelyn Bass Van Hook, who died May 19, 1997.

He spent his life in the Danville area, where he worked in the maintenance department at Dan River Inc. until his retirement.

He was also a member of Keen Street Baptist Church.

He had been a resident in Roman Eagle Nursing Home since January.

He is survived by two daughters, Joye V. Wentz of Jamestown, N.C., and Gaye V. Klingel of Clarks Summit, Pa.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by five sisters and three brothers.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Leemont cemetery by the Rev. Michael Campbell and the Rev. George Rumney.

The family will receive friends 4-5:30 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.

Graham Davis

ROANOKE - Graham Otha Davis, 83, of 6028 Buckland Mill Road, died May 17, 1998, at Friendship Manor.

Born Aug. 15, 1914, in Mecklenburg County, he was a son of Lafayette Otha Davis and Georgia Smith Davis.

He was a retired shop worker at J.P. Stevens. Davis was a member of Melrose Baptist Church in Roanoke and was a former member of Aaron's Creek Baptist Church.

He was married to Fannie Pulliam Davis.

In addition to his wife of Roanoke, survivors include two daughters, Vivian D. Nelson of Roanoke and Ellen D. Sizemore of Anderson, S.C.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Brooks Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Larry Sprouse and the Rev. Richard Cooke. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
