Raymond Dyches
CLOVER - Raymond Dyches, 82, of 216 S. Main St., died May 17, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
Born Dec. 12, 1915, in Heath Springs, S.C., he was a son of the Rev. Dr. J.W.H. Dyches and Bettie Gregory Dyches.
He was a retired teacher.
Survivors include a brother, Kenneth C. Dyches of Oceanside, Calif.
A graveside service will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Tuesday by the Rev. Tom Walker will be in the Clover cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Brooks Funeral Home in South Boston and other times at the residence.
Lemma Hudgins
Lemma Empress Hall Hudgins, 78, 113 Eastwood Drive, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after 18 months of declining health.
Born Dec. 9, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James Edward Hall and Ada Farthing Hall.
In June 1945, she was married
to Lewis Belt Hudgins, who died Nov. 6, 1994.
She was a member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church and Virginia Rebecca's Association.
She spent her entire life in Pittsylvania County and Danville.
She was retired from Star Paper Tube, Inc. She also worked for many years at Dan River Mills, Inc., where she worked as a spinner in the spinning room, Schoolfield Division.
Survivors include a daughter, Debra H. Slaughter of Danville; a sister, Doris H. Brown of Danville; and a grandchild.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Nathaniel Hall, Henry Hall and Stanley Hall.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete at this time.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, at 448 Williamson Road.
John King
John Charlie Lee King, 68, 128 Carver Drive, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 7, 1930, in Blairs, he was a son of Robert King and Emma Hall King.
He was married
to Ophelia King, who predeceased him.
He had been employed by Corn Valley, Danville Meat Company and later retired from P. Lorillard Tobacco Company.
He was a member of Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Virginia.
Survivors include two daughters, Wyoma Renee King and Kaysandra Jones, both of Danville; a son, Kenneth King of Danville; four sisters, Laura Brown of Danville, Polly Forest of Chesapeake, Minnie Rubin of Norfolk and Virginia Cinderella White of Portsmouth; a brother, George King of Danville; three stepsisters, Alberta Parker of Baltimore, and Mannie Jackson and Pearl Mayfield, both of Danville; a stepbrother, Orlando Clark of Danville; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home by Dr. James Cabell. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Dollie Lewis
LONG ISLAND - Dollie Davis Lewis, 54, 1928 Harmony Road, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
Born March 17, 1944, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Robert Davis and Laura Hubbard Davis, who survives.
She was married
to Vernon "Sunny" Lewis, who survives.
She was a homemaker and a member of Staunton Baptist Church in Long Island.
In addition to her mother of Java and her husband, survivors include two daughters, Sharon Davis and Linda Lewis, both of the residence; 11 sisters, Jeanette Guerrero, Irene Davis, Emma Lou Miller and Betty Lee Stone, all of Java, and Myrtle Gilbert of Altavista, and Ella Carter and Jerlean Davis, both of Gretna, and Emma Jean Chatten of Wilmington, Del., and Lucille Davis and Mary Davis, both of Alexandria, and Arlean Barksdale of Halifax; five brothers, Joe Davis of Hurt, Robert Davis Jr. of Java, Jimmy Davis of Wilmington, Del., and Charlie Davis of Burkeville and John Henry Davis of Alexandria; a foster son, Daniel R. Davis; and two granddaughters.
She was predeceased by two sons, Donald Wayne and Roger Davis; and four sisters, Alvella Hubbard, Janie Davis, Minnie Davis and Dorothy Witcher.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Staunton Baptist Church by Dr. P.A. Medley. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

William Marshall
CROWNSVILLE, Md. - William B. Marshall, 79, died of heart failure Thursday, May 21, 1998, at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
A native of Ashburn, he attended schools in Virginia and Kentucky.
He was married
for 37 years to Mary Ola Dodson Marshall, who survives.
He was a member of South Shore Baptist Church.
He worked as a truck driver for 30 years, retiring in 1982 from O'boyle Shipping Center Industry.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, William F. Marshall of Highland Beach, Fla.; and a stepson, Michael Condalon of Severna Park, Md.
Funeral services were held May 26, 1998, at Singlton Funeral Home. Burial was in Glen Haven cemetery in Glen Burnie, Md.
Thomas 'Buddy' Moore
Thomas "Buddy" Moore, 76, 439 Norwood Drive, died Wednesday afternoon, May 27, 1998, in the emergency room of Danville Regional Medical Center after a 12 year decline in health.
Born Jan. 17, 1922, in Danville, he was a son of John Lindsey Moore and Annie Crawford Moore.
On Oct. 14, 1950, he was married
to Alice Carswell Moore, who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the European campaign during World War II.
He had spent most of his life in Danville, where he worked as a welder. He most recently worked for Sellers Brothers, Inc., where he retired in 1992.
He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, LaVern M. Boykin of Danville; a son, Claude Brad Moore of Sarasota, Fla.; also a son and a daughter, both of Iowa; a stepson, David L. Carswell of Richmond; two sisters, Bessie Vicks of Danville and Elizabeth Bailey of Reidsville, N.C.; a brother, Robert D. Moore of Danville; and a grandson.
The family will receive friends at the residence and also at the residence of his daughter, LaVern Boykin, 408 Clarkson Drive.

Norman Overstreet II
GOODE - Norman A. "Jack" Overstreet II, 78, 302 Whitcomb Lane, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Dorothy H. Overstreet.
Mr. Overstreet was born Oct. 5, 1919, in Roanoke, to the late Norman Andrew Overstreet I and the late Ola Mae Sanderson Overstreet.
He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church and was the retired founder of the family business, Lynchburg True Value Hardware.
He was a World War II veteran, having served in the African Theater. He was a retired member of Goode Ruritan Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Dr. Norman Andrew Overstreet III of Danville and Charles Philip Overstreet of Lynchburg; two daughters, Susan Overstreet Carter and Laura Overstreet Frey, both of Lynchburg; nine grandchildren, Andrew Scott Overstreet, Jason Lake Overstreet, Philip O'Neil Carter, Brent Thomas Carter, Mallory Ann Overstreet, Richard Paul Overstreet, Fredrick Karl Overstreet, Andrew Conrad Frey and Rachel Catherine Frey.
A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday in the Woodall-Tharp Chapel by the Rev. Bob Gochenour and Pastor Wes Gillespie. Burial will be in Virginia Memorial Park.

Barbara 'Bobbie Leona' Taylor
HOUSTON - Barbara Stephens "Bobbie Leona" Taylor, 71, formerly of Danville, Va., died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at Texas Medical Center, Hospice Unit, in Houston. She had been in declining health for the past four years and had spent three weeks in the hospital.
Born Nov. 29, 1926, in Lumberton, N.C., she was the daughter of Forest Stephens and Mathie Oferd Stephens Nobles.
On May 3, 1947, she was married
to Jasper Jennings "Jack" Taylor, who died Aug. 27, 1967.
She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.
She lived most of her life in Danville, Va., before moving to Houston in 1996.
She was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc., where she worked as a spinner in No. 8 spinning room. She was also a homemaker.
Survivors include three daughters, Linda Graham of Houston, Pam Taylor of Brodnax, Va., and Betty Barrett of Danville, Va.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Larry Edmonds and the Rev. Dr. Tom Evans. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Betty Barrett, 8368 Mount Cross Road, Danville, Va.
The Rev. Robert Bowman
The Rev. Robert W. Bowman, 88, 106 Robertson Ave., died Tuesday afternoon, May 19, 1998, at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past three years.
Born Oct. 23, 1909, in Patrick County, he was the son of Elifus Bowman and Irma Marshall Bowman.
He was married
to the former Mamie Foster, who survives.
He was a retired Baptist minister, having served the Central Baptist Church in Lynchburg for 24 years, the Kingswood Baptist Church in Norwood and Beams Baptist Church in Luray.
He had served in the ministry for 50 years. Most of his life was spent in Altavista and he was the last surviving member of his generation.
He was a member of Riverview Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Margaret B. Dove of Danville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Riverview Baptist Church by the Rev. Duane O. Blevins. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Ruth Gamble Dixon
On May 17, 1998, the angels of the Lord escorted the spirit of Ruth Gamble Dixon home to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
She was predeceased by her mother, Lousa Gamble; a sister, Florine Gamble; and a brother, Arthur Gamble.
She leaves to cherish her memories two daughters, Louise V. Moore of Richmond and Miss Charisma Lourene Dixon of Norfolk; a stepson, James Kelty Jr. of Philadelphia; three grandchildren, Glenda Harrell Clark of Danville, Robin Elizabeth Beatty of Belleville, Ill., and Ronald David Moore Sr. of Richmond; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two nieces, three nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was born in Lane, S.C., on June 16, 1916. She was of the Apostolic faith and attended Mount Calvary Holy Church in Richmond. She later joined the Temple of Faith Apostolic Church in Halifax. Mrs. Dixon served as Director of the Ginter Park Methodist Church Nursery in Richmond for 27 years.
There will be a celebration of her life at the Temple of Faith Apostolic Church, 3306 Mountain Road, Halifax.
The family will receive friends at her granddaughter's home, 617 Homestead Trail, Ringgold.

Wilburn Lea
PHILADELPHIA - Wilburn M. Lea, 61, 1820 Widener Place, died Friday, May 15, 1998, at a hospital in Philadelphia.
Born July 22, 1936, he was the son of Howard W. and Mary Kernodle Lea.
He was married
to Shirley Lea, who survives.
He was a graduate of John M. Langston High School.
In addition to his wife of Philadelphia, survivors include three daughters, Joyce Lea, Lisa Lea and Loriann Lea, all of Philadelphia; a son, Chester, of Philadelphia; three sisters, Joan Lois Cousins of Victoria, Miriam L. Shaw of Danville and Angelene L. Mitchell of Winston-Salem; and a grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday at Bethel Deliverance Church. Burial will be in a Philadelphia area cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
