PENHOOK - Queen Patterson, 77, of Route 1, died Monday morning, May 18, 1998, at Franklin Health Care Center in Rocky Mount.
Born Aug. 15, 1920, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Beatrice Patterson.
She was a homemaker and a member of True Vine Baptist Church in Franklin County.
She was the only member of her immediate family.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at True Vine Baptist Church by the Rev. Wayne Watkins. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Sammie Witcher
PENHOOK - Sammie Washington Witcher, 76, 2771 Hatchett Road, died unexpectedly Tuesday, May 19, 1998, at his residence.
Born Sept. 9, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Witcher and Octavia Campbell Witcher.
He was last employed at National Home as a builder. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by a sister, Mattie S. Spears of Charlottesville.
He was predeceased by four sisters, Sallie Campbell, Hattie Jones, Carrie Campbell and Bertha Kidd; and two brothers, Johnnie Witcher and Clyde Witcher.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at the Greater Mt. Parrish Missionary Baptist Church by Dr. Samuel Easley. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the church, and other times at the residence of his nephew, James Kidd, 2645 Calvary Road, Penhook.

Pauline Blalock
Pauline Whorley Blalock, 66, 3365 Westover Drive, died Thursday, May 21, 1998, at her residence after several years of declining health.
Born Jan. 3, 1932, in Ferrum, she was a daughter of Ancil Lacy Whorley and Haggie Boothe Whorley, who survives.
On March 28, 1952, she was married
to Jack Blalock, who died Aug. 24, 1980.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she had worked for Healthtex Corporation until her retirement due to health reasons.
She was a member of Nor Dan Church of Christ.
In addition to her mother of Ferrum, survivors include a son, Carl Blalock of Danville; three daughters, Deborah B. Hendrix of Greensboro, N.C., Judy B. Haas of Danville and Jackie B. Norton of Milton, N.C.; four sisters, Iva W. Guilliams and Jane W. Peters, both of Ferrum, Jo W. Rorrer of Greensboro and April W. Carroll of Danville; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
She was also predeceased by a sister, Margaret Whorley; and a brother, Roger Whorley.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in the Whorley Family cemetery, Ferrum, by Minister John Hill.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Edward Mayhew Sr.
GRETNA - Edward Lewis Mayhew Sr., 83, 121 Highland Road, died Thursday, May 21, 1998, at his residence.
Born March 27, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Jessie Bud Mayhew and Mattie Saunders Mayhew.
Mr. Mayhew was co-owner, with his wife, Nellie, of Gretna Radio and Appliance Company.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Gretna and a member of Anderson Lodge 258 A.F. & A.M.
He is survived by his wife, Nellie Treadway Mayhew of the residence; two sons, Edward Lewis Mayhew Jr. of Monroe and Michael Giles Mayhew of Gretna; a daughter, Ruth M. Hedrick of Gretna; a brother, Pete Mayhew of Danville; two sisters, Dorothy Dishman and Suzie Doolin, both of Danville; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth H. Simpson, Jacob L. Hedrick, Lewis Mayhew, Kelley Bauman, Dewey Mayhew, Betsy Brown, Billy Sutherland and Jennifer Withrow; and five great-grandchildren, Robbie Bauman, Andrew Bauman, Christen Bauman, Caine Mayhew and McKenzie Mayhew.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Gretna Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 14, Gretna, Va. 24557.

Betty Scarce
Betty Marie Clark Scarce, 59, 153 Ginger Drive, died Thursday, May 21, 1998, at his residence following a decline in health since March of 1998.
Born Jan. 9, 1939, in Danville, she was a daughter of Samuel Arnold Clark Sr. and Naomi Slaughter Clark, who survive.
On June 15, 1957, she was married
to Russell Hugh Scarce, who survives.
She was a member of Woodberry Hills Baptist Church and American Business Women's Association.
She spent her entire life in Danville and Pittsylvania County.
She retired from Perfections, due to failing health, where she was a receptionist. Prior to that she had worked for 25 years with Retail Merchants Association of Danville Inc., as an assistant administrator.
In addition to her husband of the residence and her parents of Danville, survivors include a daughter, Karen Marie C. Thompson of Danville; two sisters, Janice C. Shelton of Renan and Trudy C. Thompson of Gaffney, S.C.; two brothers, Samuel Arnold Clark Jr. of Gadsden, Ala., and John S. Clark of Mebane, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Keith R. Scarce, who died May 10, 1987.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Lewis P. Harris. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Jennifer 'Kitten' West
LAWTON, Okla. - Jennifer "Kitten" Lovelace West, 34, 2217 NW Williams Road, died Friday, May 15, 1998, at University Hospital in Oklahoma City.
Born Feb. 1, 1964, in Chatham, Va., she was the daughter of James A. Lovelace and Jonell Hughes Jackson, who survives.
She was married
to Keith West, who also survives.
She was in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.
In addition to her husband of Lawton and her mother of Forestville, Md., she is survived by her grandmother, Della Hughes of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Shockoe Baptist Church in Danville by the Rev. Ralph Cypress. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
There will be a viewing from 4-8 tonight at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral and 12-1 p.m. Saturday at the church.
Annie Wilborn
SOUTH BOSTON - Annie Mae Elliott Wilborn, 80, 104 Ellyson Ave., died Thursday, May 21, 1998, at Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Born April 10, 1918, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Theodore C. Elliott and Lelia Josephine Jones Elliott.
She was married
to Zorah Mitchell Wilborn, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Pleasant Grove United Church of Christ.
Survivors include two daughters, Becky W. Hopper of Granbury, Texas, and Ann W. Edwards of South Boston; two sons, Robert Mitchell "Bobby" Wilborn and Barney Kay Wilborn, both of South Boston; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by five brothers and two sisters.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Halifax Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Delia Earnhardt.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Powell Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her son, Barney Kay Wilborn, 1104 Grove Avenue, South Boston.

GRETNA - Nellie Treadway Mayhew, 81, 121 Highland Road, died Thursday, May 21, 1998, at her residence.
Born Dec. 19, 1916, in Statesville, N.C., she was a daughter of the late John Wiley Treadway and Ivy Kirby Treadway.
She was married
to Edward Lewis Mayhew Sr., who died Thursday morning, May 21, 1998.
She was co-owner with her husband of Gretna Radio, TV & Appliance.
She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Gretna and the Fidelis Sunday school class.
She was also a member and past matron of Gretna Chapter 18, Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include two sons, Edward Lewis Mayhew Jr. of Monroe and Michael Giles Mayhew of Gretna; a daughter, Ruth M. Hedrick of Gretna; three sisters, Stella Lovern of Burlington, N.C., and Mary Cundiff of Newport News and Vona Treadway of Gretna; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth H. Simpson, Jacob L. Hedrick, Lewis Mayhew, Kelley Bauman, Dewey Mayhew, Betsy Brown, Billy Sutherland and Jennifer Withrow; and five great-grandchildren, Robbie Bauman, Andrew Bauman, Christen Bauman, Caine Mayhew and McKenzie Mayhew.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - William Shirley Reynolds, 75, of Pridgen Road, died Friday, May 22, 1998, at Conway Hospital.
Born June 24, 1922, in Franklin County, Va., he was a son of Ford C. and Nannie Hammock Reynolds.
He was formerly of Danville, Va.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Nanette Reynolds; two sons, Jerry Lea Reynolds of Danville, Va., and James William Reynolds of Robins, N.C.; a daughter, Linda Deal Dunn of Denton, N.C.; three brothers, Darryl Reynolds of Ramsuer, N.C., and Douglas Reynolds and Dewey Reynolds, both of Danville, Va.; a sister, Alvie Holt of Franksville, N.C.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at a later date in Danville, Va.

Born Nov. 10, 1910, she was a daughter of Franklin Van Buren Sage and Emma Jones Sage.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Sunday in Mountain View cemetery in Danville.
