MARTINSVILLE - Helen McBride Barker, 69, 2862 Mt. Olivet Road, died Monday, May 25, 1998, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born May 3, 1929, in Greensboro, N.C., she was a daughter of Richard Lester McBride and Carrie Evelyn Tomlin McBride.
She was married
to Rorer J. Barker Jr., who survives.
She was a member of Mount Olivet Christian Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Nancy B. Lumpkin of Danville and Mary B. Harrell of Axton; a son, John J. Barker of Ft. Worth, Texas; three sisters, Nannie M. Johnson of Greensboro, N.C., and Alma M. Neal and Leslie M. Moser, both of Danville; two brothers, John McBride of Ocala, Fla., and Glennie W. McBride of Danville; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at McKee-Stone Funeral Chapel by Ministers James Alsop and Dick Hensley. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Earl Groves
AXTON - Earl A. Groves, 78, 5276 Medical Center Road, Anderson Heights community, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, in Martinsville.
Born June 12, 1919, in Remington, he was the son of Joseph R. Groves and Elizabeth O. Willingham.
He was married
to Virginia L. Groves, who survives.
He had worked for more than 25 years at Safeway Stores in Washington, D.C., as a store manager.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Force in Burma and China and the CBI Theater.
He was a member of Remington United Methodist Church in Remington. He attended Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church in Axton.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include his stepdaughter, Judy B. Corcoran of Martinsville; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Louise G. Embrey and Lillian G. Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted 7 p.m. today at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville, by the Rev. Jeffrey L. Cannon. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton, W.Va.
The family will receive friends following the funeral service tonight from 7:30-8:30 p.m.
at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

James McCubbins
James Grover McCubbins, 77, 647 Jackson Heights, died Monday evening, May 25, 1998, at his residence after a decline in health for a number of years.
Born June 1, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John O. McCubbins and Sissie Lipford McCubbins.
On Feb. 16, 1946, he was married
to Dorothy Tucker McCubbins, who survives.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Infantry. He served 511 days on front line duty, serving in Sicilian Naples-Foggia Rome-Arno, Southern France Rhineland and Central Europe.
He received the American Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon with Bronze Arrow Head, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Glider Badge.
He had spent most of his life in the Danville area.
He previously worked for the State Highway Department for a number of years, and later worked for Dan Valley Flour Mill, where he worked for 22 years as a mixer.
He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church for 63 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two brothers, John D. McCubbins and Gary C. McCubbins, both of Danville; and three sisters, Alva Preston of Bloomington, Ill., and Martha Harris of Greensboro, N.C., and Dean Brumfield of Williamsburg.
He was predeceased by a brother, Charles W. McCubbins.
Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Steven Greer and the Rev. Robert Carty.
The family will receive friends at the residence in the Mount Hermon community.

Beulah Williams
Beulah C. Williams, 82, 222 Forest Road Drive, died early Tuesday morning, May 26, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 28, 1915, in Robbinsville, N.C., she was a daughter of William Carpenter and Laura Anderson Carpenter.
She was married
to Sherman Wayne Williams, who died Oct. 19, 1987.
Since 1935, she had lived in the Danville area, where she worked for Dan River, Inc., in the #3 dress before retiring at the age of 62.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three daughters, Laura W. Hill, Faye W. Allen and Doris Williams, all of Danville; two sons, Alvin J. Williams and Claude Williams, both of Danville; a sister, Addie Anderson of Robbinsville, N.C.; a brother, Weldon Carpenter of Robbinsville, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by Elder Jim White. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Vickie Wyatt
RINGGOLD - Vickie L. Wyatt, 40, 2669 Ringgold Church Road, died Monday, May 25, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Nov. 8, 1957, in Danville, she was a daughter of the late Melvin Hill and Martha Ann Mills Hill Nolan, who survives.
On June 4, 1990, she was married
to John Michael Wyatt, who survives.
She was a member of North Main Baptist Church.
She was a volunteer at Kentuck Elementary School and was assistant coach for the T-Ball League. In 1978, she began working as a child care worker at the Learning Center and later at Tot Spot, Inc., until her health failed.
In addition to her husband of the residence and her mother of Ringgold, survivors include a son, Michael Cody Wyatt of the residence; a sister, Teresa McGuire of Danville; and her grandmother, Ella Louise Hill of Danville.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home by the Rev. Dr. Eddie Davis.
The family will receive friends 4-7 tonight at the residence of her mother-in-law, 204 Franklin Turnpike, Danville.
Lemma Hudgins
Lemma Empress Hall Hudgins, 78, 113 Eastwood Drive, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after 18 months of declining health.
Born Dec. 9, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James Edward Hall and Ada Farthing Hall.
In June 1945, she was married
to Lewis Belt Hudgins, who died Nov. 6, 1994.
She was a member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church and Virginia Rebecca's Association.
She spent her entire life in Pittsylvania County and Danville.
She was retired from Star Paper Tube, Inc. She also worked for many years at Dan River Mills, Inc., where she worked as a spinner in the spinning room, Schoolfield Division.
Survivors include a daughter, Debra H. Slaughter of Danville; a sister, Doris H. Brown of Danville; and a grandchild.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Nathaniel Hall, Henry Hall and Stanley Hall.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete at this time.

John King
John Charlie Lee King, 68, 128 Carver Drive, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 7, 1930, in Blairs, he was a son of Robert King and Emma Hall King.
He was married
to Ophelia King, who predeceased him.
He had been employed by Corn Valley, Danville Meat Company and later retired from P. Lorillard Tobacco Company.
He was a member of Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Virginia.
Survivors include two daughters, Wyoma Renee King and Kaysandra Jones, both of Danville; a son, Kenneth King of Danville; four sisters, Laura Brown of Danville, Polly Forest of Chesapeake, Minnie Rubin of Norfolk and Virginia Cinderella White of Portsmouth; a brother, George King of Danville; three stepsisters, Alberta Parker of Baltimore, and Mannie Jackson and Pearl Mayfield, both of Danville; a stepbrother, Orlando Clark of Danville; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home by Dr. James Cabell. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Dollie Lewis
LONG ISLAND - Dollie Davis Lewis, 54, 1928 Harmony Road, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
Born March 17, 1944, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Robert Davis and Laura Hubbard Davis, who survives.
She was married
to Vernon "Sunny" Lewis, who survives.
She was a homemaker and a member of Staunton Baptist Church in Long Island.
In addition to her mother of Java and her husband, survivors include two daughters, Sharon Davis and Linda Lewis, both of the residence; 11 sisters, Jeanette Guerrero, Irene Davis, Emma Lou Miller and Betty Lee Stone, all of Java, and Myrtle Gilbert of Altavista, and Ella Carter and Jerlean Davis, both of Gretna, and Emma Jean Chatten of Wilmington, Del., and Lucille Davis and Mary Davis, both of Alexandria, and Arlean Barksdale of Halifax; five brothers, Joe Davis of Hurt, Robert Davis Jr. of Java, Jimmy Davis of Wilmington, Del., and Charlie Davis of Burkeville and John Henry Davis of Alexandria; a foster son, Daniel R. Davis; and two granddaughters.
She was predeceased by two sons, Donald Wayne and Roger Davis; and four sisters, Alvella Hubbard, Janie Davis, Minnie Davis and Dorothy Witcher.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Staunton Baptist Church by Dr. P.A. Medley. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

William Marshall
CROWNSVILLE, Md. - William B. Marshall, 79, died of heart failure Thursday, May 21, 1998, at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
A native of Ashburn, he attended schools in Virginia and Kentucky.
He was married
for 37 years to Mary Ola Dodson Marshall, who survives.
He was a member of South Shore Baptist Church.
He worked as a truck driver for 30 years, retiring in 1982 from O'boyle Shipping Center Industry.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, William F. Marshall of Highland Beach, Fla.; and a stepson, Michael Condalon of Severna Park, Md.
Funeral services were held May 26, 1998, at Singlton Funeral Home. Burial was in Glen Haven cemetery in Glen Burnie, Md.
Thomas 'Buddy' Moore
Thomas "Buddy" Moore, 76, 439 Norwood Drive, died Wednesday afternoon, May 27, 1998, in the emergency room of Danville Regional Medical Center after a 12 year decline in health.
Born Jan. 17, 1922, in Danville, he was a son of John Lindsey Moore and Annie Crawford Moore.
On Oct. 14, 1950, he was married
to Alice Carswell Moore, who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the European campaign during World War II.
He had spent most of his life in Danville, where he worked as a welder. He most recently worked for Sellers Brothers, Inc., where he retired in 1992.
He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, LaVern M. Boykin of Danville; a son, Claude Brad Moore of Sarasota, Fla.; also a son and a daughter, both of Iowa; a stepson, David L. Carswell of Richmond; two sisters, Bessie Vicks of Danville and Elizabeth Bailey of Reidsville, N.C.; a brother, Robert D. Moore of Danville; and a grandson.
The family will receive friends at the residence and also at the residence of his daughter, LaVern Boykin, 408 Clarkson Drive.

Norman Overstreet II
GOODE - Norman A. "Jack" Overstreet II, 78, 302 Whitcomb Lane, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Dorothy H. Overstreet.
Mr. Overstreet was born Oct. 5, 1919, in Roanoke, to the late Norman Andrew Overstreet I and the late Ola Mae Sanderson Overstreet.
He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church and was the retired founder of the family business, Lynchburg True Value Hardware.
He was a World War II veteran, having served in the African Theater. He was a retired member of Goode Ruritan Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Dr. Norman Andrew Overstreet III of Danville and Charles Philip Overstreet of Lynchburg; two daughters, Susan Overstreet Carter and Laura Overstreet Frey, both of Lynchburg; nine grandchildren, Andrew Scott Overstreet, Jason Lake Overstreet, Philip O'Neil Carter, Brent Thomas Carter, Mallory Ann Overstreet, Richard Paul Overstreet, Fredrick Karl Overstreet, Andrew Conrad Frey and Rachel Catherine Frey.
A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday in the Woodall-Tharp Chapel by the Rev. Bob Gochenour and Pastor Wes Gillespie. Burial will be in Virginia Memorial Park.

Barbara 'Bobbie Leona' Taylor
HOUSTON - Barbara Stephens "Bobbie Leona" Taylor, 71, formerly of Danville, Va., died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at Texas Medical Center, Hospice Unit, in Houston. She had been in declining health for the past four years and had spent three weeks in the hospital.
Born Nov. 29, 1926, in Lumberton, N.C., she was the daughter of Forest Stephens and Mathie Oferd Stephens Nobles.
On May 3, 1947, she was married
to Jasper Jennings "Jack" Taylor, who died Aug. 27, 1967.
She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.
She lived most of her life in Danville, Va., before moving to Houston in 1996.
She was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc., where she worked as a spinner in No. 8 spinning room. She was also a homemaker.
Survivors include three daughters, Linda Graham of Houston, Pam Taylor of Brodnax, Va., and Betty Barrett of Danville, Va.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Larry Edmonds and the Rev. Dr. Tom Evans. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

William Robert Biddlestone
William Robert Biddlestone, M.D., 2952 Golf Club Road, died Friday morning, May 29, 1998, at his residence.
Born Oct. 3, 1923, in McKeesport, Penn., he was a son of Charles C. Biddlestone and Nellie Van Nort Biddlestone.
On May 28, 1977, he was married
to Mary Smith Biddlestone.
He was a graduate of University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Memphis. M.D. and postdoctoral training in internal medicine at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and in psychiatry at Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute in Falls Church and the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
He was a physician at Department of Pulmonary Disease in Cleveland Clinic, director at Mental Hygiene Clinic and acting chief in Psychiatry Service Veterans Administration Center in Richmond. He was also chief of Psychiatry Service, Veterans Administration Medical Center in Asheville, N.C., and staff psychiatrist at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute in Danville until his retirement in October 1996.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, American College of Physicians, American College of Chest Physicians, American Psychiatric Association and was a bassist with the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra and the Richmond Community Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth B. Biddlestone of Dalton, Penn.; three sons, William R. Biddlestone Jr. of Athens, Ohio, and Frederick C. Biddlestone of Toledo, Ohio, and Paul S. Biddlestone of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday at Christ Episcopal Church by the Rev. Fred Martin.

Joseph Glazener
CHASE CITY - Joseph Roy Glazener, 82, died Thursday, May 28, 1998.
He was married
to Vista Glazener, who predeceased him.
He was a member of Black Branch Baptist Church, Chase City Masonic Lodge 119 A.F. & A.M. and Danville Scottish Rite Body.
He was retired from Estes Express Lines.
Survivors include a son, E.H. "Scotty" Glazener of Danville; a daughter, Grace Glazener of Richmond; a sister, Maxie G. Shannonhouse of Elizabeth City, N.C.; a brother, William Henry Glazener of Williamsville, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday at Black Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Kevin Eley. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Masonic Rites by Chase City Masonic Lodge 119 A.F. & A.M.

Rev. Russell Jones
CHATHAM - The Rev. Russell Jones, 90, 808 Sheva Road, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 15, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Stonewall Jones and Ella Smith Jones.
He was married
to Mamie Marie Jones, who predeceased him.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed at Chatham Hall and was the founder and pastor of Friendship Baptist Church in the Sheva community.
Survivors include three sons, Ralph S. Jones of the residence, Roy R. Jones of Chatham and Delock M. Jones of Greensboro, N.C.; two daughters, Eulia Virginia Jones and Shelby Jean Jones, both of the residence; a brother, Jessie Jones of Chatham; two sisters, Annie Laura Younger and Irene Whitehead, both of Chatham; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by two sons, Stonewall Jones and Russell Jones Jr.; three daughters, Bobby Lee, Allie Mae and Dale Evans; five brothers, Woodrow Jones, Olando Jones, Carter Jones, Winnon Jones and Stonewall Jones Jr.; and six sisters, Lemma Coleman, Reva Calloway, Ella Pearl Jones, Toy Elizabeth Jones, Susie Jones and Bessie Jones.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, by the Rev. Burnett Clark. Burial will be in Smithfield Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Louise Perkinson
Louise Hill Perkinson, 91, died Friday, May 29, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born April 26, 1907, in Danville, she was the daughter of John Robert Hill and Lucy Ogden Hill.
She was married
to Edward McRobert Perkinson, who died Oct. 18, 1956.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she was employed by Belk Leggett Co., and retired as executive payroll officer.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a former member of Milton Presbyterian Church.
She was also a member of Harry Wooding Garden Club, the Dorothea Henry Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Ladies Benevolent Society of Danville Regional Medical Center and the Women's Club of Milton, N.C.
Survivors include two daughters, Lucy J. Oakley of Prospect Hill, N.C., and Nancy P. Owen of Danville; a son, Edward M. Perkinson Jr. of Richmond; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jack Heinsohn Jr. and the Rev. Elbert Williamson.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Nancy Owen, 151 Virginia Ave.
