Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Bill Shepherd

William Thomas "Bill" Shepherd, 62, 621 Main St., Apt. 254, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and four days in the hospital.

Born Dec. 27, 1935, in Pelham, N.C., he was a son of William M. Shepherd and Mollie Wray Shepherd, who survives.

On June 8, 1996, he was married to Joyce Whitlow Shepherd, who survives.

A lifelong resident of the Danville area, he worked in the shipping department for Durham Hosiery Mill until his retirement due to health reasons.

He had worked as a desk clerk at the Hotel Leeland after his retirement.

He was of the Baptist faith and served in the U.S. Navy.

In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Ringgold, survivors include three daughters, Melissa S. Thompson of Gibsonville, N.C., and Lena S. Myers of Pelham, N.C., and Susan S. Bailey of Chatham; two sons, Allen Shepherd of Ringgold and Bill Shepherd of Keeling; a stepdaughter, Joan W. Soyars of Forest; a stepson, Ricky Whitlow of Danville; two brothers, Earl Shepherd and Jerry Shepherd, both of Danville; three sisters, Bonnie S. Rowland and Patsy S. Adkins, both of Ringgold, and JoAnne Shepherd of Danville; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. William G. Mizelle. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens with military honors by American Legion Post 325.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his mother, Mollie W. Shepherd, 545 Owl Road in the Mountain Hill community.

William Terry

RICHMOND - Dr. William Sanford Terry Sr., 77, formerly of Portsmouth, died Friday, May 29, 1998.

A native of Chatham, he was a son of Charles Edward Terry and Minnie Turner Terry.

He was married for 52 years to Dolly Easley Vaden Terry, who predeceased him.

He was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy, the University of Richmond and the Medical College of Virginia.

He interned at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Oakland, Calif., during World War II. He served as a resident in Pathology at the University of Oregon followed by a fellowship in Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota.

He was commissioned a lieutenant junior grade, Medical Corps, U.S. Naval Reserve and served as a medical officer with the Sixth Fleet.

He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War, serving as chief of the contagious disease unit, U.S. Naval Hospital, Portsmouth.

He practiced internal medicine in Portsmouth from 1954 until his retirement in 1991.

He served as chairman of Department of Medicine at Maryview Medical Center. He was past president of the Medical and Dental Staff of Portsmouth General Hospital and also served in the hospital's board of directors.

He was a member of numerous professional organizations including American College of Physicians from which he received the Laureate Award in 1990 for his contributions to medicine. He was also a founding member and past president of Portsmouth Academy of Medicine.

In the Portsmouth community, he served as a board member and chapter chairman of American Red Cross. He was a former trustee of Norfolk County School Electoral Board and a member of the City of Chesapeake School Board.

He served for nine years on the State Board of Health and was president of the board in 1975-1976. He also served in the board of directors of Virginia Blue Shield.

He was a member and Paul Harris Fellow of the Portsmouth Rotary Club and a longtime member and former deacon of Churchland Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, W. Sanford Terry Jr. and Dr. Charles Vaden Terry, both of Richmond; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Churchland Baptist Church by Dr. R. Clint Hopkins. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 3-4:30 p.m. Sunday at Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth.

Lottie Penick-Walker

HALIFAX - Lottie Lucinda Penick-Walker, 80, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

She was born May 8, 1918, in Halifax County.

In 1981, she retired from teaching.

Survivors include a sister, Eliza Garrett of Halifax; and a grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Nathalie by the Rev. James Traynham. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Remains will lie in state an hour prior to the service.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her niece, Gazaria Brown, 118 Meadow Drive, South Boston.

Crawford, Garrett & Burton Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

Willie Kernodle

Willie Scott Kernodle, 56, of 193 Melbourne Circle, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at Winston Salem Rehabilitation/Health Care Center.

He was born on February 24, 1942, in Pittsylvania County. He was the son of William Kernodle and Lavania Galloway Kernodle.

He was a member of American Legion Post 29 and the Danville Beautician's Association. He was the owner and beautician at Modern Beauty Salon in Danville.

Military rites will be performed by American Legion Post 325.

Survivors include three sons, Rhonta Kernodle of Danville, Ray Inge, Sr. of Jersey City, N.J. and Anthony Inge of Victoria, one daughter, Sherri Kernodle of Danville, four sisters, Faye Logan of Richmond, Va., Betsy Gunn of Richmond, Va., Lois Wilson of Rockville, Md. and Mary Bracey of Columbia, Md., two brothers, Wesley Kernodle of Cascade, Va. and Kenneth Kernodle of Danville, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was predeceased by his wife, Alease Inge Kernodle.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church by Dr. R. W. Jones, Rev. Willie J. Toomer and Rev. Frederick Wilson. Viewing will be held at Beavers Funeral Home Sunday, from 4-8 p.m.

The family will receive friends at the home of Rhonta Kernodle, 109 Arlington Place, Danville.

Bennie McCubbin

Bennie Eldridge McCubbins, 90, of 26 Stokesland Ave., died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center where he had resided since April 16, 1998.

He was born in Pittsylvania County on December 1, 1907, a son of the late Samuel David McCubbins and Dollie Ann Elliott McCubbins.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.

He spent most of his life in Danville where he was a retired salesman for Belk Leggett and a charter member of Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was a choir member and deacon.

Survivors include one brother, Holland McCubbins of Brosville.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ray Humphries and Rev. Myron Bruce. Burial will follow at the Cascade Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 7-8:30 p.m., and at other times at the residence of his niece, Betty McCubbins Gallaway at 26 Stokesland Avenue.

Edith Meeler

ALTON - Edith Earp Meeler, 72, of 1033 Foster Road, died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at her home.

She was born on March 2, 1926, in Halifax County. She was the daughter of the late Henry G. Earp and Nora Hunt Earp.

She was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Philip Meeler, Sr. of Alton, Va., one daughter, Pamela Carol Meeler of Columbia, S.C., one son, Charles Philip Meeler, Jr. of Durham, N.C., one sister, Barbara E. Demnisky of Alton, Va., three brothers, U. Fuller Earp of Blacksburg, Va., H. Staley Earp of Danville, Curtis N. Earp of Danville, and two grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Patricia M. Barnett, one son, Donald P. Meeler, one sister, Elsie E. Loftis., and one brother, Samuel J. Earp.

Funeral services will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church on Monday, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in the Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive visitors at the residence Sunday evening.

Brooks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Louise Perkinson

Louise Hill Perkinson, 91, died Friday, May 29, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born April 26, 1907, in Danville, she was the daughter of John Robert Hill and Lucy Ogden Hill.

She was married to Edward McRobert Perkinson, who died Oct. 18, 1956.

A resident of Danville for most of her life, she was employed by Belk Leggett Co., and retired as executive payroll officer.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a former member of Milton Presbyterian Church.

She was also a member of Harry Wooding Garden Club, the Dorothea Henry Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Ladies Benevolent Society of Danville Regional Medical Center and the Woman's Club of Milton, N.C.

Survivors include two daughters, Lucy Jane P. Oakley of Prospect Hill, N.C., and Nancy Martin P. Owen of Danville; a son, Edward McRobert Perkinson Jr. of Richmond; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jack Heinsohn Jr. and the Rev. Elbert Williamson.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Nancy Owen, 151 Virginia Ave.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

George Prillaman

George Willard Prillaman Sr. of Chapel Hill, N.C, died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. He was 79.

Born in Leakville Junction, Mr. Prillaman was a member of the University Baptist Church and retired as Director of Auxiliary Services at UNC Chapel Hill.

Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Monday at the University Baptist Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan Prillaman of Chapel Hill, two sons, Donald G. Prillaman of Metairie, La., and George W. Prillaman, Jr. of Chapel Hill. Grandchildren, Ashley Ullstein of Manchester, Mass., Macon Richardson, III of Burlington, N.C., Sarah Richardson of Durham and Elise Richardson of Durham, and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to: University Baptist Church, Building Fund, 100 S. Columbia Street, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27516.

Phyllis Strange

Phyllis N. Strange, 71, of 1440 Blair Loop Road, died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

She was born on September 5, 1926, in Rockbridge County. She was the daughter of James S. Newell and Edith Mae Newell.

She was a housewife of the Baptist faith who lived in the Westover Hills community for the last 51 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Patsy Jo Labiosa of Keeling, and Barbara S. Ragsdale of Danville, three sons, Buddy Strange of Danville, Jim Strange of Danville, and Mike Strange of the residence, two brothers, Wayne Lee Newell of Lexington and Mac C. Newell of Lexington, Va., three sisters, Juanita N. Carter of Roanoke, Roberta N. Hockman of Lexington, and Betty Ann Newell of Buena Vista, 16 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence T. Strange and her brother, J. Lloyd Newell.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 3 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Fred J. Vicks. Burial will follow in the Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the Barker Funeral Home on Sunday from 7-9 p.m.
