Mae Hardy
CASCADE - Mae Hyler Hardy, 96, of 585 May Hardy Road, died early Sunday morning, May 31, 1998, at Piney Forest Health Care Center in Danville.
She was born in Pittsylvania County on April 30, 1902, a daughter of John J. Hyler and Mary "Mollie" Jones Hyler.
She was married
for 40 years to W. Elbert Hardy, who died in 1981.
She was also predeceased by one sister, Annie H. Lynskey, and two brothers, Fletcher H. Hyler and Greef J. Hyler.
She spent all of her life in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County. She was a graduate of Brosville School and Radford College. She was a school teacher for 44 years before retiring. She taught the first grade at Brosville School for 42 years, and she was the oldest member of Brosville United Methodist Church.
She was the last member of her generation of the family.
Her only survivors are several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hyler Family cemetery by the Rev. Richard McDowell. The family will be at the residence of her niece, Sylvia Minter, at 269 May Hardy Road in Brosville. Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Clarence Hudgins
Clarence J. Hudgins, 83, of 530 Lansbury Drive, died Saturday evening at Stratford House Health Care Center.
Born June 29, 1914, in Danville, he was the son of Alex Tig Hudgins and Bessie Brooks Abbott Hudgins.
He was first married
to Virginia Francis Stanfield Hudgins, who died in 1978. He later married
Glaydese Hudgins, who died in January 1998.
He worked at Danville Traction and Power Co. as shop foreman until his retirement.
Survivors include a son, J. Allen Hudgins of Danville; three brothers, Robert L. Hudgins and Alvis C. Hudgins, both of Danville, and James A. Hudgins of Virginia Beach; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Irvin J. Hudgins and Grover T. Hudgins.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ron Mateer. Burial in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.
Berkley Hunt
Berkley Tas Hunt, 89, of 600 Main St., died Friday, May 29, 1998, at the Piney Forest Healthcare Center.
Born Dec. 22, 1908, in Virginia, he was the son of Tas and Hattie Russell Hunt. He was employed with Dibrell Brothers for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia Dameron Hunt; one daughter, Gladys Hunt Stamps of Alexandria; two sons, John Hunt of Philadelphia and Junior Douglas Hunt of Patterson, N.J.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at White Rock Baptist Church in Ringgold by Dr. James Cabell. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park. Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Irene Shelton
GRETNA - Irene Roach Shelton, 91, died Sunday, May 31, 1998, at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born December 28, 1906, at Whittles Depot in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late William Henry Roach and Roberta Jackson Roach. She was the widow of the late L. Clyde Shelton. Mrs. Shelton was a lifetime member of Payneton United Methodist Church and lived at Whittles, Chatham and Gretna for 81 years. She moved to Lynchburg 10 years ago and was currently residing at Valley View Retirement Community.
She is survived by six nieces and nephews: Leo Marsh and Zelda Colinger, both of Lynchburg; Billy Roach and Ann Snakenberg, both of Honolulu, Hawaii; Jimmy Roach of Accoville, W.Va., and Barbara Moye of Greenville, N.C.; many close and loyal friends in the Gretna/Whittles/Chatham area and at Valley View.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at Gretna Burial Park by the Rev. Dr. James Siddons.
The family will receive friends today 7-8 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.
Harry East
CHATHAM - Harry Forney East, 80, 5548 Chalk Level Road, died Monday, June 1, 1998, at his residence.
Born Feb. 12, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son John Jefferson East and Ellen Forney East.
He was married
to Clara Riddle East, who survives.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Sheva Church of Christ.
In addition to his wife of Chatham, survivors include two sons, Harry F. East Jr. of Richmond and Glenn T. East of Gretna; three daughters, Ellen F. Keen, Jean E. Bowen and Dianne E. Woodson, all of Chatham; three sisters, Ora E. Perdue of New Brunswick, N.J., and Gladis E. Lewis of Lynchburg and Edna E. Townsend of Chatham; three brothers, John David East of Danville and Samuel J. East and Paul B. East, both of Chatham; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Ruth E. Scruggs, Bertha M. East and Cora E. Barbour.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sheva Church of Christ by Minister J. Michael Stephenson, Minister Frank B. Fuller and Minister Larry L. Owen. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Michael Hubbard
GRETNA - Michael Luke Hubbard, 35, 24168 U.S. Hwy. 29, died Monday, June 1, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 6, 1962, in Danville, he was a son of Marie Waller Hubbard of Gretna and the late Luke Hubbard.
He was a former driver for Out and About and a former member of Gretna Rescue Squad.
In addition to his mother, survivors include a sister, Darlene Hedrick of Gretna; and a brother, James H. Hubbard of Gretna.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gretna Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Jerry Blevins. Interment
will be in Gretna Burial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials contributions be made to the Gretna Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 14, Gretna, Va. 24557.

Colleen Ricketts
KEELING - Colleen Farthing Ricketts, 72, 13200 Old Richmond Road, died Monday, June 1, 1998, at her residence after a year of declining health.
Born Nov. 23, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Ira Thomas Farthing and Lillie Groff Farthing.
On June 6, 1942, she was married
to William Harvey Ricketts Jr., who died March 23, 1979.
She had lived her life in the Pittsylvania County area and was retired from Dan River Inc., after 33 years of service.
She was a Primitive Baptist and attended Old Mill Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Paige Ricketts of Keeling, H.T. Ricketts of Blairs and Bryan Ricketts of Sutherlin; three daughters, Evelyn Stamer of Danville, Mamie Jean Hinton of Keeling and Judy Rogers of Blairs; four sisters, Susie Adkins of Elon College, N.C., Charlotte Swinney of Axton, Yvonne Gunnell of Danville and Nora Hawker of Keeling; five brothers, Rudy Farthing of Chatham, Dan Farthing and Aubrey Farthing, both of Danville, Charles Farthing of Greensboro, N.C., and Howard Farthing of Colonial Heights; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Rusty Mullins, the Rev. Walter Yancey and the Rev. Tom Ewrin. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Judy Rogers, 460 Carter Lodge Road, Blairs.
Bernard 'Tommy' Church
RINGGOLD - Bernard Thomas "Tommy" Church, 42, 4948 Ringgold Church Road, died Monday, June 1, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 4, 1956, in South Boston, he was a son of Curtis Bethel Church and Glola Worsham Church Osborne, who survives.
He was married
to Diane Crostic Church, who survives.
He was a member of Central Boulevard Church of God on Hairston Street in Danville, where he was active with the prison ministry, children's church and a member of the church choir.
In addition to his wife of Ringgold and mother of South Boston, survivors include two brothers, Curtis James "Jim" Church of Lynchburg and Herman Franklin Osborne Jr. of South Boston; and a sister, Christina Osborne Johnson of Huntersville, N.C.
In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his stepfather, Herman F. Osborne Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Central Boulevard Church of God by the Rev. John H. Meadows. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Powell Funeral Home, South Boston. The family will be at the residence of his mother, 204 Powell Road, South Boston, today, and at his residence on Thursday morning.
Stanley Fore
Stanley G. Fore, 73, 637 Berryman Ave., died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at Stratford Health Center.
A native of Danville, he was the son of Robert Fore and Alice Longwell Fore.
On June 27, 1953, he was married
to Irene McCune Fore, who survives.
He was of the Baptist faith. He was an owner and operator of antique sales.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jeffrey Wright.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Isaac Grasty
Isaac Grasty, 97, died at Lovington Health Care Center in Lovington.
Born Oct. 21, 1901, he was the son of Donald Ferguson and Molly Grasty.
He was first married
to Mary Trayham, who predeceased him. He was later married
to Virgie Grasty, who survives.
He was a plasterer and a member of Camp Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include four daughters, Rebecca Wilson of Danville, Catherine Nickens of Washington, D.C., and Clarice Palmer of Capital Heights, Md., and Gloria Williams of Mitchellville, Md.; and a son, Isaac Grasty Jr. of Washington, D.C.
He was also predeceased by two sons, Phillip Grasty and Alfonzo Grasty.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Camp Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Willie J. Toomer. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will be at 116 Rockford Place, Danville.

Odelia Haymore
Odelia Powell Haymore, 79, 1063 Halifax Road, died Monday, June 1, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center in Danville.
Born Aug. 14, 1918, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Archie Gates Powell and Rosa Ella Clayton Lawson.
She was married
to Robert Gordon Haymore, who survives.
She was a charter member of Christian Fellowship Church of God.
She had lived her life in Halifax County, Person County, N.C., and Danville.
She was retired from Halifax Insurance Company.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a stepson, Richard Haymore of Portsmouth; a brother, Gilbert Powell of Lexington, N.C.; and two step-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 1998, in Floral Hills Memory Gardens by the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr.
Carl Holton
Carl Vandevere Holton, 83, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 6, 1915, he was a son of the late Fred and Sara Holton of Danville.
He was educated at the watchmakers school of Pennsylvania. He was employed at Brown's Jewelry until he became a salesman for S. LaRose Jewelry Supplier, where he covered Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina until his retirement in 1977.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Randolph.
He was a member of Lutheran Church of the Ascension.
He was married
to Dorothy Fitzgerald Holton, who died in 1978.
Survivors include a son, Van Holton of Roanoke; two daughters, Millie Wells of Danville and Melinda Setzer of Salisbury, N.C.; a sister, Jeanne Nagy of Oregon; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks, pastor of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church, with military honors by the American Legion Memorial Post 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at 200 Montague St.
