CLARKSVILLE - Dorothy Mae Small, 60, died Sunday, May 31, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born May 30, 1938, in Mecklenburg County, she was a daughter of Roy and Louise Pettus Mangum.
She was a member of Mount Ararat Baptist Church and a former Mecklenburg County school bus driver.
Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Small Robinson of Danville; two sons, Jessie Small Jr. of Clarksville and Jerry E. Small of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Geneva Oliver of Woodbridge and Carolyn Downey of Durham, N.C.; three brothers, Eugene Mangum and Johnny Mangum, both of Clarksville, and Milo Mangum of West Bury, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Ararat Baptist Church, Clarksville, by the Rev. John H. Brown. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6-7 p.m. Friday at C.H. Harris Funeral Home.
Patricia Young
NATHALIE - Patricia Lavonne Young, 27, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at the University of Texas Medical Center in Galveston, Texas.
She born Jan. 13, 1971, in Baltimore.
Survivors include her mother, Pastor Joyce Young of Nathalie; two sisters, Almeria Bowey of Nathalie and Michelle Young of Danville; her grandmother, Oneza Jones of Nathalie; her grandfather, William Jones of Baltimore; and her great-grandmother, Leola DeJarnette of Nathalie.
Funeral services were conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at Crawford, Garrett & Burton Funeral Chapel in Halifax by Bishop Richard Harper. Burial was in the Barbour-Moorefield Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her mother, 128 Golden Leaf Road, Nathalie.
Virginia Dishman
CHESTERFIELD - Virginia Smith Dishman, 82, 3505 Slate Court, died Monday afternoon, June 1, 1998, at the residence after six months of declining health.
Born Nov. 8, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Willie Burl Smith and Maggie Hyler Smith.
She was married
to Henry Kermit Dishman, who died Sept. 5, 1984.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she was retired from Dan River, Inc., in the #2 dress.
She had resided with her daughter in Chesterfield for the past eight years.
She was a former member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church, Southall Baptist Church and Gateway Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Meeks of Chesterfield; a son, Leon Dishman of Gloucester; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Robert Vermillion.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Lynn and Pam Meeks, 734 Tamworth Drive.
Yvette Dunkley
Yvette Dunkley, 30, 557 Westover Drive, died Tuesday evening, June 2, 1998, at her residence after a decline in health since February 1998.
Born Feb. 16, 1968, in Danville, she was a daughter of James Troxler and Shirlene Stewart Rudder and stepdaughter of David Rudder, who all survive.
She was married
to Larry Wayne Dunkley, who survives.
She had spent most of her life in Danville and was a member of Gatewood Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, stepfather and husband, all of Danville, survivors include two sons, Joseph Wayne Dunkley and Timothy Wayne Dunkley, both of the residence; a daughter, Rebecca Emly Dunkley of the residence; a brother, Kenneth Lawrence Huggins Jr. of Cascade; a sister, Sharon Jeanette Austin of Danville; her maternal grandmother, Lena Mozelle Stewart of Danville; and her paternal grandmother, Rebecca Emly Troxler of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. John C. Gentry. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Tony Puryear
SOUTH BOSTON - Tony Wayne Puryear, 47, 1211 Berry Hill Road, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at the residence.
Born Feb. 10, 1951, in Halifax County, he was a son of Jesse Lee Puryear and Kathleen Murray Puryear, who survive.
He was married
to Charlotte Mills Puryear, who also survives.
He was a truck driver for Rivers Trucking Company.
In addition to his wife and parents, all of South Boston, survivors include two daughters, Sandra P. "Sandy" Goad of Cluster Springs and Kelli Lynn Davis of South Boston; two sons, Mitchell Wayne "Mitch" Puryear of Cluster Springs and Jamie Lee Davis of South Boston; two sisters, Kathy P. Boughman of Hopewell and Janice P. Moore of South Boston; two brothers, Carlyle Ramsey of Alton and Ronnie Puryear of South Boston; and a grandchild.
He was predeceased by a son, Christopher Eugene Puryear.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at South Boston Church of God by the Rev. Bill Leonard. Burial will be in Black Walnut Baptist Church cemetery in Cluster Springs.

Edward Carter
Edward Lewis Carter, 47, 1214 Claiborne St., died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born June 3, 1951, in Lynchburg, he was the son of Lou Emma Oaks Carter and Edward Carter, who survives.
He was married
to Mattie Hutchings Carter, who also survives.
In addition to his wife and father, both of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Kecia Carter and Tierra Barksdale, both of Danville; a son, Lewis Carter of Hyattsville, Md.; and two sisters, Emma Jean Carter and Rebecca Johnson, both of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by Elder Ivanhoe Duncan. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Elizabeth Clark
Elizabeth Wilson Clark, 84, 10128 Mount Cross Road, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 28, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Morgan Wilson and Jenny Griggs.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include four sons, Mac Arthur Clark and Douglas Clark, both of Martinsville, James Clark III of Danville and John Henry Clark of Chatham; four daughters, Juanita C. Wilson of Martinsville and Verlena McLaughlin, Laura Allen and Lela Mae Clark, all of Danville; three sisters, Virginia Shaw, Alice Toler and Lucille Thornton, all of Danville; 20 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Silver Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Booker T. George. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
There will be a viewing from 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.

William 'Worth' Cooper Jr.
SALEM - William E. "Worth" Cooper Jr., 47, 3849 Bradshaw Road, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at his residence.
Born May 9, 1951, in Halifax County, he was a son of William E. Cooper Sr. and Jenny McGregor Cooper, who survives.
He was married
to Deborah Nelson Cooper, who also survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of South Boston, survivors include a son, William E. "Trey" Cooper III of the residence; and a brother, Ronnie Cooper of Stafford.

Elma Dalton
GRETNA - Elma Lee Yeatts Dalton, 82, 1596 Deer View Road, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 5, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Taylor Lewis Yeatts and Annie Merricks Yeatts.
She was predeceased by a son, Carroll G. Dalton; a brother, Lewis Yeatts; and a sister, Joyce Graham.
She was a member of Midway Baptist Church and a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Homie C. Dalton of the residence; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy C. and Colleen Dalton of Gretna, and Wayne and Nancy Dalton of Forest; two daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Ronnie Bennett of Gretna and Martha and Steve Smith of Gretna; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Dalton of Danville; a brother, Walter Yeatts of Chatham; two sisters, Hazel Gibson of Orlando, Fla., and Marion Lovelace of Gretna; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Gretna Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 14, Gretna, Va. 24557.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Midway Baptist Church by Dr. Lynn Marstin and Elder Marvin Brumfield. Interment

GRETNA - Patsy Cook Irby, 51, 2120 Sycamore Road, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at her residence.
Born March 27, 1947, in Danville, she was a daughter of Helen Barnes Cook and Elwood Lee Cook Sr., who survives.
She was married
to Harold Irby Sr., who also survives.
She was a member of Chatham Pentecostal Holiness Church and a member of Gretna Rescue Squad.
In addition to her husband of the residence and her father of Gretna, survivors include her stepmother, Madie Daniels Adkins Cook of Gretna; a son, Harold Irby Jr. of Gretna; a daughter, Kristi I. Adams of Sandy Level; two brothers, Elwood L. Cook Jr. of Charleston, S.C., and Reginald Cook of Gretna; a sister, Gloria Kinsler of Gretna; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday at Chatham Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. James Abner. Interment
will be in Gretna Burial Park.

CHATHAM - Willie Edward Redd, 88, 1704 Spring Garden Road, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at Gretna Health Care Center in Gretna.
Born Sept. 28, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Eddie Washington Redd and Mary Sue Roach Redd.
He was married
to Annie Mae Anderson Redd, who predeceased him.
He was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church.
Survivors include seven daughters, Audrey R. Crane of Dry Fork, Estelle R. Shelton of Chatham, Shirley R. Hogan of Danville, Faye R. Hutcherson of Houston, Judy R. Whitt of King George, Margo R. Calabro of New Jersey and Susan M. Redd of Portsmouth; three sons, Willie E. Redd Jr. of Chatham, John A. Redd Sr. of Orlando, Fla., and Lewis B. Redd of Atlanta; a brother, Carlton Redd of Halifax; 23 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Shockoe Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael S. Huff and the Rev. Mark Redd. Burial will be in Saint Paul's Episcopal Church cemetery in Pittsylvania County.

Gene Steele
Gene Wade Steele, 39, 142 Stokesland Ave., died early Thursday morning, June 4, 1998, in Chatham.
Born March 24, 1959, in Danville, he was a son of Bobby Steele and Margie Matherly Steele and a stepson of Doris Steele, all of whom survive.
He spent most of his life in Danville and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents and stepmother, all of Danville, survivors include a daughter, Gina Nicole Steele of Danville; a brother, Brian Keith Steele of Danville; three sisters, Mavis Ferris, Audrey Drumwright and Rhonda Steele, all of Danville; and his maternal grandmother, Lucille Matherly of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Gilmore Hundley. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
