Joseph Jeffers
Joseph Jeffers, 80, 125 Chatelaine Ave., died Friday, June 5, 1998, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 13, 1917, in Blanch, N.C., he was the son of James Jeffers and Ella Hatchett Jeffers.
He was married
to Josephine Patterson Jeffers, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Louis Jeffers of Danville; and two daughters, Juanita Solomon of Philadelphia and Daisy J. Price of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hamer Baptist Church in Blanch, N.C., by the Rev. Cephus Lea. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Johnny Mills
Johnny Spencer Mills, 87, 231 South Ridge St., Apt. 204 Heritage Towers, died Sunday evening, June 7, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been a resident of Piney Forest Health Care Center for three years before entering the hospital.
Born Nov. 13, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Willie Addison Mills and Lillian Chattin Mills.
He was married
to Carolyn Wellington Owens Mills, who survives.
A resident of Danville for most of his life, he worked for Dan River Inc., and had also done security work prior to retiring.
He was a member of College Park Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Ronald L. Mills of Danville, Johnny S. Mills Jr. of Richmond and Gerard Mills of Roanoke; a daughter, Joni Carolyn Mills of Danville; a sister, Dannie Mills of Danville; and six grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Steven W. Greer.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Hettie Price Tompkins
Hettie Price Tompkins, widow of Artie M. Tompkins Sr., died June 8, 1998.
She was born Sept. 20, 1913, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. George W. Price of Danville.
She is survived by three sons and two daughters, Kathryne T. Adams of Blackstone, Artie M. Tompkins Jr. of Danville, Joseph P. Tompkins of Lebanon, Ohio, and Angie T. Greenfield of Hilton Head Island, S.C., and James W. Tompkins of Atlanta. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Gladys P. Smith of Danville and Minnie P. Hyler of Dobson, N.C.; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy Tompkins and Florence Tompkins, both of Danville, and Lucy Huntley of Auburn, Ind., and Pauline Price of Baltimore.
She was a long time member of Grace Design United Methodist Church and served as organist there for many years. She also served as organist for Stokesland United Methodist Church and First Christian Church of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, June 12, at Grace Design United Methodist Church by the Rev. Scott Holcomb-McLain. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her son, Artie M. Tompkins Jr., 3326 Brackenhouse Road.
J.D. Adkins
J.D. Adkins, 79, 626 Westover Drive, died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at his residence.
Born Aug. 5, 1918, in Danville, he was a son of Jack Adkins Sr. and Mary Magdeline Hodges Adkins.
He was married
to Dorothy Loraine Adkins, who predeceased him.
He was a member of Sheldon Baptist Church.
Until his retirement, he was employed for 30 years as a truck driver.
He served as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include a daughter, Rebecca S. Boyd of Alton; three sons, Mickey Burnette and Ricky L. Adkins, both of Danville, and David R. Adkins of Ringgold; two sisters, Annie Burnette and Rena Clifton, both of Danville; three brothers, Willard Walker, Riley Walker and Buddy Walker, all of Danville; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday in Highland Burial Park by Pastor Hylton Lawrence Jr., with military honors performed by American Legion Memorial Post 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Hilda Barbour
Hilda McDaniel Barbour, 74, 123 Longview Court, Westover Hills, died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after five months of declining. She was in serious condition for the past week.
Born July 7, 1923, in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Charlie Henry McDaniel and Anna Barker McDaniel.
She was married
to William Paul Barbour, who died Dec. 15, 1978.
She had lived on Longview Court for 35 years. She had worked in the 4 Gray Inspection room at Dan River Mills, Inc., for 37 years until she retired in 1983.
She was a member of Stokesland Baptist Church. She was also a member of Dan River Retirement Club and chairperson of the Entertainment Committee.
Survivors include a daughter, Martha B. Rowland of Longview Court; a son, Ray Barbour of Pelham, N.C.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was the last member of her generation of the family.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Donald G. Frank and the Rev. David Turbyfill. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Martha B. Rowland, 124 Longview Court, Westover Hills.
Viola Chamberlain
Viola Hill Chamberlain, 90, 103 Fairfield Ave., died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born June 12, 1907, in Greensboro, N.C., she was a daughter of William Boyd Hill and Florence Powell Hill.
She was married
to Charles Lester Chamberlain, who died Jan. 3, 1997.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she had worked at Dan River, Inc., for 48 years until her retirement.
She was a member of Arlington Baptist Church and Dan River Retiree's Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Doris Hanes of Richmond; a brother, Preston Hill of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Pauline Albright and Annie Gravely, both of Danville; a half sister, Iris Garrett of Danville; a stepbrother, Robert Hill of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Robert Hackworth and Dr. Samuel Greeson. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Linease Howard
MORENO VALLEY, Calif. - Linease Gunter Howard, 41, 23695 White Owl Court, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at her residence.
Born Sept. 19, 1956, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was a daughter of Claude Calvin Gunter Sr. and Hazel Moses, who survive.
She was married
to Thomas Howard, who survives.
In addition to her husband, her mother of New Jersey and her father of Atlantic City, N.J., survivors include two sons, Terrance Howard of Norfolk, Va., and Jairon Howard of Moreno Valley; six sisters, Shirley Gunter and Lisa Waller both of Danville, Va., and Cynthia Gunter and Brenda Gunter, both of Pleasantview, N.J., and Theresa Gunter and Linda Gunter, both of Atlantic City, N.J.; and three brothers, Claude Gunter Jr. of Lynchburg, Va., and Steve Gunter of Philadelphia and Demica Gunter of Atlantic City, N.J.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at Kentuck Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Jesse Fitz. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park, Danville, Va.

She died Monday, June 8, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and two weeks in the hospital.
Born Sept. 29, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jesse D. Chattin and Pearl Ester Holly Chattin.
She was married
to Smith Henry Hudson, who died May 31, 1983.
A life long resident of Danville and Pittsylvania County, she had worked at Dan River Mills for 18 years.
She had been a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home for the past year.
She was a member of Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Polly J. Scarce of the residence; a son, Ted Michael Hudson of Newport News; and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Harold Delmont Chattin and Warren Douglas Chattin.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Douglas Scearce Sr.
Douglas Ray Scearce Sr., 49, 1805 N. Main St., Apt. B, died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born July 5, 1948, in Danville, he was a son of Resper Monroe Scearce and Virginia Jones Scearce Hunt.
A life long resident of the Danville area, he worked as a machine operator for Wood Fiber Industries prior to his decline in health.
Survivors include his stepfather, Harold H. Hunt of Danville; two sons, Douglas Ray Scearce Jr. of Danville and Terry Lee Scearce of Eden, N.C.; two sisters, Linda LaPrade and Kay Rakes, both of Danville; a brother, Forrest Scearce of Danville; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 3 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Scott Holcomb McClaine.

Lawrence Stevens
SUTHERLIN - Lawrence Melvin Stevens, 57, 705 Kerns Church Road, died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at his residence after four years of declining health.
Born Sept. 15, 1940, in Halifax County, he was a son of Augustas Melvin Stevens and Lucille Shiflett Stevens Lacks, who survives.
On Oct. 16, 1965, he was married
to Kitty White Stevens, who also survives.
A life long resident of the Sutherlin community, he owned Stevens Auto Sales and was a member of Kerns Memorial United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife and his mother, both of Sutherlin, survivors include a son, Lawrence Scott Stevens of Roxboro, N.C.; two sisters, Lois S. Shields of Chatham and Patsy S. Alderson of Clover; two brothers, Gerald Newman Stevens of Sutherlin and Rodger Dale Stevens of Keeling; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Howard Green. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
