Harry Weatherford
SOUTH BOSTON - Harry James Weatherford, 83, 1413 Moore St., died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 16, 1915, in Halifax County, he was a son of Raleigh E. Weatherford and Mary Gravitt Weatherford.
He was married
to Myrtle A. Weatherford, who predeceased him.
He was the retired owner and operator of Allen & Weatherford Grocery.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and American Legion Post 8.
Survivors include two sisters, Hallie W. Davis of Alton and Roger W. Hood of Collinsville, Ill.; and five step-grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by his brother, Dudley Weatherford.
A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. Thursday in Oak Ridge cemetery by the Rev. Robert M. Fox Jr.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Brooks Funeral Home, and other at the residence.
Louis Balboni
CHARLOTTESVILLE - Commander Louis Joseph Balboni died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at a local hospital.
He was retired from the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Lee Tyree Balboni of Charlottesville.
A graveside service was held in Charlottesville.
Hill and Wood Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Hilda Barbour
Hilda McDaniel Barbour, 74, 123 Longview Court, Westover Hills, died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after five months of declining. She was in serious condition for the past week.
Born July 7, 1923, in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Charlie Henry McDaniel and Anna Barker McDaniel.
She was married
to William Paul Barbour, who died Dec. 15, 1978.
She had lived on Longview Court for 35 years. She had worked in the 4 Gray Inspection room at Dan River Mills, Inc., for 37 years until she retired in 1983.
She was a member of Stokesland Baptist Church. She was also a member of Dan River Retirement Club and chairperson of the Entertainment Committee.
Survivors include a daughter, Martha B. Rowland of Longview Court; a son, Ray Barbour of Pelham, N.C.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was the last member of her generation of the family.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Donald G. Frank and the Rev. David Turbyfill. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Martha B. Rowland, 124 Longview Court, Westover Hills.
Viola Chamberlain
Funeral services for Viola Hill Chamberlain, 90, 103 Fairfield Ave., will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Robert Hackworth and Dr. Samuel Greeson. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
She died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born June 12, 1907, in Greensboro, N.C., she was a daughter of William Boyd Hill and Florence Powell Hill.
She was married
to Charles Lester Chamberlain, who died Jan. 3, 1997.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she had worked at Dan River, Inc., for 48 years until her retirement.
She was a member of Arlington Baptist Church and Dan River Retiree's Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Doris Hanes of Richmond; a brother, Preston Hill of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Pauline Albright and Annie Gravely, both of Danville; a half sister, Iris Garrett of Danville; a stepbrother, Robert Hill of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Jessie Dodson
MARTINSVILLE - Jessie Lewis Dodson, 92, 317 Forest St., died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at R.J. Reynolds-Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
Born March 24, 1906, in Franklin County, he was a son of Thomas Dameron Dodson and Alzie Adams Dodson.
He was married
to Bessie Davis Dodson, who survives.
He was retired from Pannill Knitting Co., Inc. He was a member of Martinsville Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Shirley D. Spencer of Martinsville; two brothers, G.T. Dodson and Herbert Dodson, both of Figsboro; two sisters, Lottie D. Kirks of Figsboro and Doris D. Mason of Martinsville; and a granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Norris Funeral Services Chapel by Elder Leonard Brammer and Elder Lane Carter. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.

William 'Woody' Isom
FRIES - William Woodrow "Woody" Isom, 76, died Monday, June 8, 1998, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital.
Born Sept. 4, 1921, in Grayson County, he was a son of John W. Isom and Ella Wright Isom.
Survivors include his wife, Vera Isom of Fries; two daughters, Kathy Widner of Fries and Carolyn Lineberry of Woodlawn; two sons, Freddy Isom of Wytheville and David Isom of Fries; a brother, Jay Isom of Woodlawn; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Grace Baptist Church by the Rev. Ben Haga. Burial will be in Isom cemetery with military rites by Hillsville VFW Post 1115.

Della Nichols
SOUTH BOSTON - Della Thomas Nichols, 82, of Wolf Trap Road, died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Dec. 3, 1915, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Richard Thomas and Rosa Lou Thomas.
She is survived by her husband, James Frank Nichols of South Boston.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Oak Ridge cemetery by the Rev. Horace Murray.

James Scarce
LEESBURG - James Benjamin Scarce died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at his residence.
Born Jan. 18, 1923, in Danville, he was a son of Wade Hampton and Annie Riddle Scarce Sr.
He was married
to Gloria M. Scarce, who survives.
He had been employed as a carpenter in the construction industry.
In addition to his wife of Leesburg, survivors include three daughters, Anna Marie Hinton of Grafton, Debra Ann Scarce of Leesburg and Linda Juanita Bucy of Great Falls; four sisters, Leuna McBride of Hampton, Jackie Brown of Richmond, Reba Goad of Danville and Erna Adkins of Whitmell; a brother, Harry Scarce of Whitmell; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted noon Friday at Green Funeral Home in Herndon. Burial will be in National Memorial Park, Falls Church.

George Shelton
George Edd Shelton, 69, 1536 Sandy Creek Road, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at his residence after a year of declining health.
Born July 14, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Henry Shelton and Lorena Shelton Shelton.
On May 9, 1953, he was married
to Virginia Hammock Shelton, who survives.
A life long resident of Pittsylvania County, he was retired from farming.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He had served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Curtis E. Shelton of Dry Fork; three daughters, Betty S. Payne of Dry Fork and Cindy S. Simpson and Barbara S. Crabb, both of Danville; two sisters, Virginia S. Potter and Elsie S. Haskins, both of Danville; three brothers, Larry Shelton of Dry Fork and Gary Shelton and Bobby Shelton, both of Danville; eight grandchildren and four step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Daryl Joyce.

Lawrence Stevens
SUTHERLIN - Funeral services for Lawrence Melvin Stevens, 57, 705 Kerns Church Road, will be conducted 3 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Howard Green. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
He died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at his residence after four years of declining health.
Born Sept. 15, 1940, in Halifax County, he was a son of Augustas Melvin Stevens and Lucille Shiflett Stevens Lacks, who survives.
On Oct. 16, 1965, he was married
to Kitty White Stevens, who also survives.
A life long resident of the Sutherlin community, he owned Stevens Auto Sales and was a member of Kerns Memorial United Methodist Church.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
In addition to his wife and his mother, both of Sutherlin, survivors include a son, Lawrence Scott Stevens of Roxboro, N.C.; two sisters, Lois S. Shields of Chatham and Patsy S. Alderson of Clover; two brothers, Gerald Newman Stevens of Sutherlin and Rodger Dale Stevens of Keeling; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Hettie Price Tompkins
Mrs. Hettie Price Tompkins, widow of Artie M. Tompkins Sr., died June 8, 1998.
She was born Sept. 20, 1913, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. George W. Price of Danville.
She is survived by three sons and two daughters, Kathryne T. Adams of Blackstone, Artie M. Tompkins Jr. of Danville, Joseph P. Tompkins of Lebanon, Ohio, and Angie T. Greenfield of Hilton Head Island, S.C., and James W. Tompkins of Atlanta. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Gladys P. Smith of Danville and Minnie P. Hyler of Dobson, N.C.; five sisters-in-law, Dorothy Tompkins and Florence Tompkins, both of Danville, and Lucy Huntley of Auburn, Ind., and Pauline Price of Baltimore and Esther Boling of Roanoke.
She was a long time member of Grace Design United Methodist Church and served as organist there for many years. She also served as organist for Stokesland United Methodist Church and First Christian Church of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, June 12, at Grace Design United Methodist Church by the Rev. Scott Holcomb-McLain. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Hallie Davis
STUART - Funeral services for Hallie Lawson Inman Davis, 82, will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with the Pastor Tommy Nichols and the Rev. Verlin Combs officiating. Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. tonight at Moody Funeral Home.
She died Friday, June 12, 1998, at Patrick Community Hospital in Stuart.
Born Jan. 19, 1916, in Patrick County, she was the daughter of the late Reid and Quinnie Lawson.
She was first married
to Ernest Inman and and later Samuel Davis, both of whom preceded her in death.
Survivors include four daughters, Etta Collins of Mt. Airy, N.C., Blanche Collins of Danville, Rachel Martin of Danville and Mabel Howell of Stuart; one son, Ernest Inman Jr. of Stuart; one sister, Virginia Holt of Stuart; one brother, Claude Lawson of Stuart; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her first and second husbands, she was predeceased by two sisters, Gracie Collins and Marie Sisk, one brother, Kenneth Lawson and three grandchildren.
