Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Stone Gregory Jr.

Samuel Stone Gregory, Jr. of Stone's Throw, Java, Virginia, died Saturday, June 13, 1998 at his residence.

He was born on October 4, 1917 at Java, Va., the son of Samuel Stone Gregory, Sr. and Mary Stone Gregory. He attended Randolph-Macon Military Academy, The Citadel and the United States Military Academy. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served for seven years in the East Indies, the British Isles, North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Europe. He received 14 American and foreign awards and decorations.

He was the owner of Gregory General Farms, Gregory General Store, Gregory Hog Hotel, Gregory Hickory Products and other business interests covering an international area. He served on many boards and commissions over the years including Averett College, Randolph-Macon Academy, American Red Cross, the Pittsylvania County Planning Board, Danville Pittsylvania County Mental Health Board, the Danville Chapter of the Retired Officers Association and the Virginia Chamber of Commerce. He was a lifelong member of the Shockoe Baptist Church and served on the Board of Trustees for many years.

He was married to Helen Martin Gregory, who predeceased him. He is survived by his second wife, Doris Hundley Dixon Gregory.

Other survivors include three daughters, Helen Wise of Princeton, N.J., Mary Riddle of Atlanta, Sallie Gregory of Java; two sons, Stone Gregory, III and John Gregory, both of Java; a stepdaughter, Lisa Dixon of Danville; a stepson, Mark Dixon of Danville; two brothers, James Gregory and Lewis Gregory, both of Java; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one stepgrandson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Shockoe Baptist Church by Col. Henry Langford and the Rev. Michael Huff. Burial will follow in the Highland Burial Park with full Military Honor Guard and Escort. The family will receive friends at the residence in Java.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Hightower Jr.

MARTINSVILLE- Robert Hightower Jr., 70, of 711 Lakewood Trail, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998 at Martinsville Rehabilitation and Concalescent Home.

Born in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Robert and Cora Irby Hightower.

He was a member of the Bibleway Worldwide Church and a machine operator for Sara Lee.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Waddell Hightower; two daughters, Carolyn Napper of Norfolk, Va., and Wanda Hightower of Los Angeles; four sons, Charlie Hightower of San Francisco, Marcus Hightower of Martinsville, Wayne Hightower and Roy Hightower, both of Los Angeles; five sisters, Agnes Tazewell of Washington, Elsie Little of Philadelphia, Annie Wimbush, Rose Hightower, Cora Hightower, all of Martinsville; four brothers, Alfonza Hightower and John Hightower, both of Washington, Herman Hightower and James Hightower, both of Martinsville; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Bibleway Worldwide Church by Apostle Lawrence Campbell Sr. Burial will be in the Oak Hill cemetery. Viewing will be held from 1-8 p.m. tonight at L. H. Brooks and Brothers Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors at other times at 711 Lakewook Trail, Martinsville.

Pruett Hudgins

Pruett B. Hudgins, 68, of 17020 Old Richmond Road, died Thursday afternoon, June 11, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center following a decline in health.

Born Aug. 4, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Howard H. Hudgins and Thelma Pruett Hudgins.

He was married to Dorothy Burgess Hudgins, who predeceased him.

He worked for Dan River, Inc., in 4A weave as a loom fixer, until his retirement.

He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, David L. Hudgins of Bracey; a brother, Howard Dean Hudgins of North Carolina; a sister, Betty H. Brumfield of Keeling; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Tom Erwin. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at 525 Blair Lane, Keeling.

Ceacer Law

Ceacer Law, 68, of 6885 Martinsville Highway, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998 at his residence.

He was born December 15, 1929, in Pittsylvania County to the late Arthur and Elsie Tarpley Law.

He was retired from Dan River, Inc.

He was predeceased by his wife, Verda Robertson Law.

Survivors include three sons, Cecil Law, Sr. and Barry Law both of Danville, Terence Law of Cascade, three daughters, Pamela Wilson, Vickie Strange and Amy Law, all of Danville, five sisters, Ruth Adams and Ella Garland of Danville, Emma Morton of Mainton, N.J., Rachel Jones and Lona Carter both of Camden, N.J., 14 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Frederick Wilson. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.

Viewing will be held Sunday 1- 8 p.m. at L. H. Brooks and Brothers Funeral Home. The family will be at 171 Lemon Lane at other times.

Aileen Matthews

RICHMOND - Aileen Belcher Matthews, 73, formerly of Danville, died Friday, June 12, 1998.

She was the daughter of the late Thomas William Belcher and Ruby Alice Woodall Belcher, and is survived by two daughters, Donna Wickham of Beaverdam, Deborah Boykin of Chester, five grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, and Emily Wickham, Katherine and Rachel Boykin, three sisters, Rainie B. Webb, Mozelle B. Haywood, Margaret B. Wallace, and two brothers, Robert and Ron Belcher.

Mrs. Matthews was an employee of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Richmond for 19 years.

The family will receive friends at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral 11020 W. Broad Street Road from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday and at the Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home's Westover Chapel in Danville on Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park in Danville.

Janie Traylor

Janie Bailey Traylor, 98, of 542 Mountain Hill Road, died Thursday, June 11, 1998 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born February 3, 1900 in Greenville, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Jack and Ella Bailey.

She was retired from Dan River, Inc., having worked in the #3 Spinning and was also a seamstress at her home until 1985. She was a member of Williamson Presbyterian Church and was also involved with Women of the Church.

She was married to Shirley M. Traylor, who preceded her in death.

Survivors include her grandaughter, Nancy Davis of the residence, four great-grand children, 10 great-great-grandchildren, and four great-great-great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Hazel Oliver, and her sister, Eva Eubanks.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Williamson Memorial Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in Floral Hills Memory Garden. The family received friends Friday 7-8:30 p.m. and will be at the residence at other times.

Rev. Garnett Walker

Rev. Garnett L. Walker, 77, of 339 Slaughter Avenue, died Saturday, June 13, 1998 at Riverside Health Care Center where he had resided, in declining health, for the last 10 years.

He was born in Pittsylvania County on September 6, 1920, a son of the late William Lewis Walker and Daisy Mae Hanks Walker.

He was married to Patsy Lee Payne Walker, who survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving during World War II. He had spent most of his life in Danville and North Carolina where he was a retired minister. He attended the Lighthouse Independent Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Ronnie Lee Walker of Greensboro, N.C., one daughter, Starlett W. Warrenn of Pleasant Grove, N.C., one brother, Charlie S. Walker of Danville, two sisters, Louise W. Walker and Annie W. Kelley, both of Danville.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. W.L. Wade. Burial will follow at the Payne Family cemetery at Dry Fork. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 7-8:30 p.m.

Ellen and Loyd Wilkinson

SPARTANBURG, S.C.- Ellen C. and Loyd L. Wilkinson, both of 310 Pinelake Court, died Tuesday, June 9, 1998 in Girdwood, Alaska.

Ellen, 67, a native of Meherrin, Va., was the daughter of the late Durell Edward and Hazel Savoy Crymes.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg and attended St. James United Methodist Church.

She was a social worker for Spartanburg and Greenville counties' Departments of Social Services, working with the child protective services, and also Spartanburg Council on Aging. Ellen was also a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. She was a graduate of Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C.

Surviving are two daughters, Dana Wilkinson of Spartanburg and Laura Wilkinson Hedgecock of Farmington Hills, Mich., a sister, Nancy Crymes Hughes of Cairo, Ga., two brothers, Joseph Thomas Crymes, Jr., of Baltimore, and Durell Edward Crymes, II. of Meherrin, Va., and two grandsons, Nathaniel Ray Hedgecock and Joshua Lynwood Hedgecock.

Loyd Lynwood Wilkinson, 67, a native of Danville, was the son of the late Harvey Lynne and Jettie Elizabeth Dunaway Wilkinson.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg and attended St. James United Methodist Church.

He was a retired Industrial engineer and Controller with Milliken Company form 1961-1994. He was owner of L 2 Consulting Company. He was a member of Three Pines Country Club and the S.C. Senior Golfers Association.

He was a graduate of Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Va., and attended Washington and Lee University, and was a member of Mu Chapter of Kappa Sigma fraternity. Loyd was also a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

Surviving are two daughters, Dana Wilkinson of Spartanburg and Laura Wilkinson Hedgecock, Farmington Hills, Mich., and two grandsons, Nathaniel Ray Hedgecock and Joshua Lynwood Hedgecock.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. tonight at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Central United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Harry R. Stullenbarger. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Epworth Children's Home, P.O. Box 50466, Columbia, S.C. 29250 or to Loyd and Ellen Wilkinson Memorial Fund for Assistance Hearing Dog for Chilren, c/o Paws with a Cause, 4646 South Division, Wayland, Mich. 49348.

The family is at home.

Hallie Young

Hallie Lucille Corum Young, 76, of 184 Searcy St., died at her residence Saturday, June 13, 1998, after five years of declining health.

She was born in Draper, N.C., on September 7, 1921, a daughter of the late Walter Charlie Corum and Mary Lillian Frye Cassell.

She spent most of her life in Danville where she was a homemaker and of the Full Gospel Christian faith.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Charlie Young, Jr.

Survivors include two sons, Barney Young and George Young, Sr. both of Danville, two daughters, Lynda Mahaley and Mary Fleming both of Danville, 17 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Charlie Corum and Clarence Corum, and a sister, Mary Hamlett.

Funeral services will be held at Danville Memorial Gardens at 11 a.m. on Monday. Rev. Daryl Joyce and Rev. Dr. Roy Frazier will be officiating. The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Sunday from 7-8 p.m. and at other times at the residence.

Jincy Adkins

CALLANDS - Jincy M. Adkins, 73, died June 13, 1998.

Born Jan. 27, 1925, he was the son of Clyde Owen Adkins and Missie Adkins Divers.

Survivors include two sons, Steve Owen Adkins of Callands and Tex J. Adkins of Chatham; two brothers, Wiley Adkins of Chatham and Clarence Adkins of Penhook; five sisters, Sadie Tuck and Helen Divers, both of Danville, Hazel Easome of Chatham, Edith Adkins of Callands and Janie Pompham of Washington; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alease Bradner Adkins and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cool Springs Christian Church, Sago, by the Rev. John Downs. Burial will be in the Bradner-Adkins family cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Lynch Funeral Home in Rocky Mount.

Patricia Strader

Patricia Setliff Strader, 57, of 149 Winstead Drive, died June 13, 1998, at Stratford Health Center. She had been in declining health for three months.

Born April 4, 1941, in Danville, she was the daughter of Gene Setliff and Nannie Dix Setliff.

She had spent all of her life in the Stokesland community. For 12 years, she worked for Dan River Inc., and then babysat for 15 years. She later worked for the Disston company for four years.

She was of the Baptist faith.

On Oct. 21, 1961, she married Bobby Lee Strader. He died April 23, 1984.

Survivors include two daughters, Teresa S. Roberts of Pelham, N.C., and Donna S. Collins of Danville; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Swicegood Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Gilmer Setliff and the Rev. Robert Hackworth. Burial will be at the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church cemetery in Rockingham County, N.C.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Rev. Garnet Walker

The funeral for the Rev. Garnet L. Walker, 77, of 339 Slaughter Ave., will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. W.L. Wade. Burial will be in the Payne family cemetery at Dry Fork.

He died Saturday, June 13, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center, where he had resided for the past 10 days. He had been in declining health for 10 years.

Born Sept. 6, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Lewis Walker and Daisy Mae Hanks Walker.

Walker had spent most of his life in Danville and North Carolina where he was a retired minister. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving during World War II.

He attended the Lighthouse Independent Methodist Church.

Walker was married to Patsy Lee Payne Walker, who survives.
