Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Leonard Adkins

Leonard Wayne "Li'l W" Adkins, 46, of Stateline Trailer Court, 502 Holland Road Lot 3, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at his residence after a few years of declining health.

Born July 12, 1951, he was the son of William Lee Adkins and Lillian Robertson Josey, who survives, and the step-son of Herman O. Josey Jr., who survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1969 to 1973 on the U.S.S. American as a storekeeper.

He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was a truck driver for Fleming Transfer before driving for Kendall Lumber Company, where he had worked for ten years.

In addition to his mother and step-father, survivors include one son, Joseph Wayne Adkins of Meherrin; one daughter, Stephanie Dianne Adkins of Meherrin; two brothers, William Louis Adkins of Danville and Herman Lee Adkins of Cascade; two sisters, Martha Ann Keesee of Danville, and Linda A. Davis of Ringgold.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jack Robertson. The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times at 160 Applewood Drive, the residence of his mother and stepfather.

Garnett Hundley

PRINCE GEORGE - Garnett Franklin Hundley, 95, of Prince George, Va., died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at her niece's residence in Prince George.

Born October 13, 1902, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Henry Ferdinand Franklin and Hattie Phillips.

She was a homemaker, a member of St. Paul A.M.E Church, Choir, Missionary Society, Stewardess and Trustee, and a member of Almagro Lodge #75 Order of Eastern Stars.

Survivors include her son, Hartford H. Hundley of New York City.

The funeral will be held Friday at noon from the St. Paul A.M.E Church with the Rev. Tonya Lowe officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.

Rev. Robert Jones Sr.

MARTINSVILLE - The Rev. Robert Williams Jones Sr., 79, of 1684 Carver Road, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at his residence.

Born May 2, 1919, in Richmond, he was the son of Charlie Jones and Sarah Hayes Jones.

He was married to Ada Via Jones, who predeceased him.

He was retired from Henry County Schools after 38 years. He was a member of St. Paul High Street Baptist Church and its Sunday school, usher board and choir. He was pastor of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church.

He graduated from Virginia State College (University) and received his master's degree from Virginia Tech and Virginia State College. He received an honorary doctorate from Richmond Seminary.

He was a member of Patrick Henry Community College Board, Henry County School Board and a former teacher at Patrick Henry Community College He started the Garden Club of Henry County.

He was a member of NAACP of Martinsville and Henry County, the Martinsville/Henry County Education Association, VEA and NEA.

He was a former Scoutmaster and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was president of the Sunday School BTU Convention of the Smith River Association, vice president of the Baptist Minister's Conference of Martinsville-Henry County and vicinity and dean of the Christian Education Department in Smith River. He was also vice moderator of Smith River Baptist Association and a chaplain at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

He was a member of the Virginia School Board Association and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Survivors include one son, the Rev. Robert W. Jones Jr. of Whitestone; and three sisters, Alice Chiles, Lena Booker and Ida Churchwell, all of Richmond.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul High Street Baptist Church with the Rev. William A. Shackleford Sr. officiating. Viewing will be Friday from 11 a.m.-4p.m. at Mount Lebanon Church in Danville and at St. Paul High Street Baptist Church from 7-8 p.m. Friday and at the home other times. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens in Martinsville.

Hairston Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of all arrangements.

Marvin Ligon Sr.

SCOTTSBURG - Marvin Haynes Ligon Sr., 81, of 1164 Scottsburg Road, died Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born November 10, 1916, he was the son of Hassie Ligon and Gracie Ligon.

He was married to Maurine E. Ligon, who survives.

He was a member of the Scottsburg United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge # 26.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Marvin H. Ligon Jr. of Scottsburg and Mason P. Ligon of Rocky Mount; five brothers, Edward Ligon of Decatur, Ga., Johnny Ligon, Billy Ligon and Alfred Ligon, all of Scottsburg, and Aubrey Ligon of South Boston; two sisters, Frances Walker of South Boston and Corine Throckmorton of Orange; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Vivian Ligon and Oscar Ligon.

The funeral will be conducted Friday at 3 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Anne Norton and the Rev. Michael Phillips. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. and other times at 1164 Scottsburg Road.

Powell Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Henry Mitchell Jr.

LYNCHBURG - Henry Alfred Mitchell Jr., 93, of 3539 Ridgecroft Dr., died Monday, June 15, 1998, at Virginia Baptist Hospital.

Born June 12, 1905, he was the son of Henry A. Mitchell Sr. and Annie Harris Mitchell.

He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Danville, where he served as a trustee, past treasurer and director of the Senior and Male Choirs. He was also a member of the Almagro Lodge #217.

Survivors include two sons, Henry A. Mitchell III of Virginia Beach, and James H. Mitchell of Lynchburg; three daughters, Kathryn M. Drayton of Jamaica, N.Y., Violet O. Mitchell of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Louise E. Mitchell of Lynchburg; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth. Interment icon in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. Viewing will held at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. Friday. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

H. LeRoy Partin

Hubert LeRoy Partin, 68, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at his residence.

Born December 6, 1929, in Danville, he was a son of the late Dinky Hubert and Lottie Allen Partin. Mr. Partin was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa Jane Partin.

Mr. Partin served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

He was employed by Sperry Marine for 28 years as an electronic technician. He was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and Sunday school teacher, and was a member of the Air Force Retirement Association.

Survivors include two daughters, Pamela D. Partin of Charlottesville and Donna L. Catalano and her husband, Steve, of Stanardsville, a sister-in-law, Mamie Harwell of Danville; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Sarah Jane Carpenter and Gorie Lee Carpenter of Culpeper.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 1290 Seminole Trail, Charlottesville, Va., 22901.

Teague Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Major Robertson Jr.

Major General Robertson Jr., 69, formerly of Danville, died Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at V. A. Hospital in Salisbury, N.C. He had been in declining health for several years.

Born January 14, 1929, in Schoolfield, he was the son of Major General Robertson Sr. and Callie Long Robertson Moorefield.

He resided in Salisbury, N.C., for many years and had worked in the textile industry prior to his decline in health. He was of the Protestant faith.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

Survivors include one brother, Ronald Robertson of Danville; and four sisters, Shirley R. Sorahan and Helen R. Gordon, both of Durham, N.C., Dorothy Robertson of Marysville, Wash., and Pearline R. Julian of Marysville, Wash.

He was predeceased by his sister, Virgie R. Lovelace.

The funeral will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. by Rev. Ron Mateer in Highland Burial Park. American Legion Post 325 will have military rites at the gravesite. The family will receive friends at the residence of Ronald Robertson, 741 Arnett Blvd., Danville.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Lois Robinson

Mattie Lois Robinson, 82, of Ridgeway, died Monday, June 15, 1998, at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

She was a loving, caring wife, mother and grandmother. She retired from Pannill's Knitting Company as floor-lady. She was a member of Kearfott Memorial Baptist Church.

Born July 13, 1915, in Walnut Cove, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late John Everett Campbell and the late Susan Jennie Shelton Campbell Gann.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Alma Childress, Bessy Stultz, and Dorothy Pugh; and four brothers, Coy Campbell, Harvey Campbell, Hassell Campbell, and John Campbell.

Surviving are her husband, Thurman Elmer (Peck) Robinson of Ridgeway; one son, Lee Robinson of Danville; one daughter, Linda Wade of Ridgeway; three grandchildren, Aimee Campbell Robinson, Jenny Elizabeth Robinson and Christopher Lee Robinson of Danville; and one sister, Polly Wooldridge of Martinsville.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 1998, at Kearfott Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Edwards and Rev. David Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

Norris Funeral Services is in charge of the arrangements.

Alton Paschall

SCOTTSBURG - Alton Thomas Paschall, 83, 1005 Temple Hill Road, died Friday, June 19, 1998, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Blackstone.

Born July 22, 1914, in Durham, N.C., he was the daughter of James T. Paschall and Ella Hall Paschall.

He was a retired construction foreman with T.A. Loving of Goldsboro, N.C.

He was married to Alice Oakes Paschall, who survives.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters, Linda Laughorn of Scottsburg, Vivian Puryear and Brenda Cole, both of South Boston and Katie Powell of Halifax; one step-son, Jessie Walker of Axton; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. June 22 at Brooks Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home, 1005 Temple Hill Road, Scottsburg.

Carl George Shelton

Graveside services for Carl George Shelton, 58, of 451 Northmont Boulevard, will be held at 2 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. Kyle Flora officiating.

He died Thursday, June 18, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born on December 12, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, he was the adopted son of John Luther Shelton and Edna Goodson Shelton. He lived his entire life in Danville and Pittsylvania County where he was employed by McCain Printing Co. of Danville. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church.

The only survivor is his half sister, Cathy Saunders of Danville.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Kyle Flora.

Jeffery Toller

CHATHAM - Jeffery Gordon Toller, age 44, departed this life on June 16, 1998.

He was predeceased in death by his father, the late Houston Toller. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Dee Minney-Tolley; his son, Christopher James Minney; his mother, Geneva C. Toller; three brothers, Bennett, Lawrence, and Leon Toller; two sisters, Kathleen Strange and Paulette Toller; aunts and uncles, all of Pittsylvania County; mother and father-in-law, Catherine and Joseph H. Smith; a host of cousins, eight sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, great nieces and devoted friends.

Jeffery attended Tunstall High School and was a graduate of Appalachian State College of North Carolina and Virginia Union University.

Jeffery was director of nutritional services at the Daily Planet.

Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd., Richmond, Va., where the family will receive friends Sunday, June 21, 1998 from 3-4 p.m. After 1 p.m. Monday, remains will rest in the Highland Park United Methodist Church, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jean Page officiating. Interment icon will be in Forest Lawn cemetery.

In addition to the above, cards and visits will be received at the home of his mother, Mrs. Geneva Toller, 7181 Strawberry Road, Chatham, Va. 24531.

Anthony Foster

SCOTTSBURG - Anthony "Tony" Clay Foster Sr., 59, of 5082 Bethel Road, died Sunday, June 21, 1998, at his home.

Born Sept. 26, 1938, in Campbell County, he was a son of Courtney Flournoy Foster and Erna Holland Foster.

He was an employee of Montague-Betts Steel Co. in Lynchburg for 30 years before opening his own business, 360 Service Center. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, the Bethel Ruritan Club, the Halifax County Farm Bureau, and the Lynchburg Moose Lodge.

In addition to his wife, Linda Smith Foster of Scottsburg, he is survived by one son, Anthony C. Foster Jr. of Lynchburg; two daughters, Ginger F. Overstreet of Lynchburg and Joni Marie Foster of Scottsburg; three brothers, Bob Foster of Brookneal, Sonny Foster of Yorktown, and Bert Foster of Naruna; six sisters, Helen Clark of Lynchburg, Arline George and Alice Pool, both of Newport News, Genell Bass of Concord, N.C., and Jean Braswell and Lois Pool, both of Brookneal; and five grandchildren.

He was preceeded in death by one sister, Becky Ward, and two brothers, Billy Foster and Keith Foster.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Michael Phillips and the Rev. Tony Brooks. Interment icon will follow in Oakland cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home, and other times at 5082 Bethel Road, Scottsburg.
