Aileen Inman

Mrs. Aileen Dishman Inman, 76, of 7193 Mount Cross Road, died Saturday, June 20, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C., after a decline in health for the past year.

Mrs. Inman was born in Pittsylvania County on August 18, 1921, a daughter of the late Henry Smith Dishman Sr., and Harriett Berta Eanes Dishman.

Mrs. Inman was married to Clyde Pritchett Inman Sr., who survives.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Ann Inman; a brother, Henry Dishman Jr., and also predeceased by a sister, Virginia Hedrick.

Mrs. Inman had spent most of her life in the Brosville and Sharon communities of Pittsylvania County where she was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church. She was retired from Dan River Inc., in the No. 3 dress.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons and two daughters- in-law, Clyde P. Inman Jr. and Kathy Inman, and Dennis B. Inman and Cindy Inman, all of Danville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy I. Mize and Tom Mize, and Gayle I. Smith and Jimmie Smith, all of Danville; six brothers, Otis Dishman, Cecil Dishman, Russell Dishman, and H.S. "Buck" Dishman, all of Danville, Howard Dishman of Hampton, and Wesley Dishman of Silver Springs, Md; one sister, Myrtle Hardy of Newport News; nine grandchildren, Spencer Inman, Cindy Bray, Jennifer Bowman, Nikki Inman, Jonathan Mize, Jason Inman, Crystal Smith, Michael Bray and Candi Mize; two great-grandchildren, Tanner Bowman and Ryan Bowman; two step-grandchildren, Tara Parrish and Josh Parrish; and two step-great-grandchildren, Travis Yarbrough-Fuquay and Alexis Lee Parrish.

Graveside Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Steven W. Greer. The family will receive friends at the residence in the Sharon community.

Swicegood Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements.

Edna Lillard

Edna McDowell Lillard, 75, of 531 Ingram St., died at her home Sunday, June 21, 1998, following several years of declining health.

Born Aug. 6, 1922, in Dry Fork, she was a daughter of William Watson McDowell and Kate Murphy McDowell.

She lived her entire life in the Danville area. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a secretary for Dan River Inc. She was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Donald Yeatts of Longwood, Fla.; a sister, Ola M. Motley of Chatham; and three grandchildren.

She was preceeded in death by her husband, James Lillard, who died in 1970. She was also predeceased by several brothers and sisters.

Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chestnut Level Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Campbell.

The family will receive friends at 603 Timberlake Drive, Danville.

Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Irma Moorefield

SOUTH BOSTON - Irma Langford Moorefield, 77, of 1171 Cage Trail, died Monday, June 22, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born April 17, 1921, in Charlotte County, she was a daughter of Frank Langford and Tiny Wilson Langford.

She was a member of Revelation Baptist Church and VFW.

She was married to Herman R. Moorefield, who predeceased her.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Hester of Schuylkill Haven, Pa., and Bettie M. Allen of South Boston; three sisters, Ethel Snead of Roxboro, N.C., Hilda Anderson of Greenville, S.C., and Louise Wilkins of Benson, N.C.; one brother, Beverly "Lank" Langford of Durham, N.C.; four grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Claude Langford and Berkley Langford.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs. Interment icon will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at Powell Funeral Home, and other times at 1171 Cage Trail.

George Pegram

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday for George Singleton Pegram Jr., 64, of 400 Edmonds St., at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by Bishop William T. Collins Jr. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.

He died at his residence Saturday evening, June 20, 1998, after a decline in health since October 1997.

Born in Pantego, N.C., on May 16, 1934, he was a son of George Singleton Pegram Sr., and Maybelle Rice Pegram.

He was married to Brenda Irby Pegram, who survives. They were married on Sept. 20, 1980.

He had spent most of his life in Danville where he was a carpenter before becoming disabled a few years ago.

Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include two sons, Ronald Dean Pegram of Danville and Brian Singleton Pegram of Dry Fork; four daughters, Teresa Myers Clayton of Crown Point, La., Rhonda Lynn Pegram of Danville, Tracey Pegram Chandler of Providence, N.C., and Tonya Nicole Pegram of the residence; one step-son, Randall Dale Lester of Danville; three brothers, Gene Wayne Pegram of Carolina Beach, N.C., James Pegram of Apex, N.C., and Robert Pegram of Four Oaks, N.C.; seven sisters, Doris Marcom of Hillsboro, N.C., Mary Betts of Cary, N.C., Juanita Bailey of Knightdale, N.C., Linda Sayers of Oaksboro, N.C., Barbara Ezzell of Benson, Ariz., Betty Reagan of Benson, N.C., and Sandra Reagan of Apex, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

Johnie Penick

SOUTH BOSTON - Johnie Fountain Penick, 67, of 1028 Crews Trail, died Friday, June 19, 1998, at his home.

He was born on Sept. 25, 1930, in Halifax County.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Penick of South Boston; six daughters, Sharion Penick, Mildred Reid and Frances Farmer, all of Danville, Edna Smith of District Heights, Md., Cynthia Gooden of Washington, D.C., and Tara Powell of Alton; four sons, Jerry Penick and Charles Penick, both of South Boston, and Johnny Penick and Marvin Penick, both of Danville; his mother, Lucinda Penick of South Boston; five sisters, Sallie Simms, Rosa Ballou, and Nancy Ballou, all of South Boston, Annie Penick of Richmond, and Lucinda Edmunds of Ringgold; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at New Arbor Baptist Church in South Boston by the Rev. Jefferson Goode. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery. Remains will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 1028 Crews Trail.

John Westbrook

STUART, Fla. - John James Westbrook III, 63, of Jensen Beach, died Saturday, June 20, 1998, at Martin Memorial Medical Center in Stuart.

Born in Danville, he was the son of John James and Blanch Overby Westbrook Jr.

Prior to retirement, he was a chemical consultant for International Fragrance and Flavors Inc., in Keyport, N.J., for 12 years; a chemical consultant for several other fragrance companies, and was a member of the American Chemical Society.

He is survived by his wife, Ann W. Westbrook, of Jensen Beach; two daughters, Laura Westbrook of Jensen Beach, and Martha Westbrook of Walnutport, Pa.; and three sisters, Mary Young of Georgetown, Colo., Beverly Moschler of Kings Mountain, N.C., and Edith Whitson of Taos, N.M.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Park in Chester, Va.

James Coleman

James Carter Coleman, 75, of 924 Silver Creek Road, died Monday, June 22, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for the last 6 months.

Born February 6, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Guy Hartwell Coleman and Olive Fulton Coleman.

Coleman lived his whole life in Pittsylvania County. He retired from Dan River, Inc., after 25 years as a prodution scheduler. He was a member of Saint John's United Methodist Church where he was a founding member of the Fisherman's Club, a former Sunday School teacher and lay leader.

He was married to Delores P. Coleman, who survives.

Mr. Coleman served with the U.S. Army during World War II as a first lieutenant.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, James Carter Coleman Jr. of Blairs and Steven Lee Coleman of Danville; two daughters, Nancy C. Stowe and Julie C. Cunningham, both of Danville; one sister, Mary C. Hylton of Danville; and six grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Saint John's United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Steven Greer and the Rev. Robert Carty officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home of Nancy C. Stowe, 920 Silver Creek Road off Mount Cross Road.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Jennie Dodson

Jennie Barksdale Dodson, 105, of 210 Vance Street, died Sunday, June 21, 1998, at her niece's residence.

Born March 23, 1893, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Philip and Creasy Ann White Barksdale.

She was a presser in the Danville Laundry and a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She was clerk of the church, on the Deaconess Board, Senior Choir and Missionary Society.

She was married to Aubrey R. Dodson, who predeceased her.

Survivors include two nieces, Barbara Johnson Davis and Cecelia Johnson, both of Danville.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, with the Rev. London Walker officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Viewing will be held Wednesday afternoon until 8 p.m. at L. H. Brooks and Brothers Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at other times at 210 Vance Street.

Queen Harper

ROXBORO - Funeral services for Queen Esther McCall Harper will be held today at First Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. She died Sunday, June 21, 1998 at Person County Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include one son, Donovan Harper; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Edna Lillard

Willie Robertson

Willie Sam Robertson, 98, formerly of Route 1, Danville, died Tuesday, June 23, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center. He had been in declining health for several years.

Born October 27, 1899, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Daniel Hodges Robertson and Virginia Merchant Robertson.

He was a lifelong member of the Bachelors Hall community and was a farmer prior to his retirement. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.

He was married to Nettie Baggerly Robertson, who predeceased him.

Survivors include two sons, Willie Robertson Jr. and Charles W. Robertson, both of Danville; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Thursday, June 25, at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Larry Edmonds and the Rev. Dr. Tom Evans officiating. Burial is in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at 1065 Berry Hill Road.

David Tucker

GRETNA - The Rev. David Tucker, 73, of 1552 Tucker Road, died Sunday, June 21, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 3, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the Rev. Robert L. Tucker Sr. and Betty Patrick Tucker.

He received his early education in the schools of Pittsylvania County and graduated from Washington Baptist Seminary in Washington, D.C. He was an Army veteran of World War II, where he served in Europe.

He was also a member of Harmony Masonic Lodge No. 22 of Washington, D.C. and chaplain of the Cobra CB Club. Rev. Tucker retired after 23 years of Federal Government service, including two years and six months of military service. He later retired to Gretna after his pastorship of 17 years at the Mount Olivet Baptist Church of Brunswick, Md.

Survivors include his wife, Maisie J. Tucker; two sons, Lowell David Tucker of LaPlata, Md., and Steven Richard Tucker of San Antonio, Texas; three daughters, Lauren Renee Turner of Laurel, Md., Yvonne Evette Corbett of Upper Malboro, Md., and Linda Jean Mullings of Stafford, Md.; four brothers, Albert Tucker of Brooklyn, N.Y., Robert N. Tucker, James H. Tucker and Fred Tucker, all of Gretna; and one sister, Marilyn T. Dickens of Upper Marlboro, Md.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Rev. Tucker was predeceased by five brothers, Wilbert Tucker, Clyde S. Tucker, Roncey Tucker, the Rev. Lee William Tucker and Abrey Tucker; and three sisters, Loemma Roach, Paulline Callands and Cleo Henry Allan.

The funeral will be held Saturday at noon at the Miller Funeral Home, with the Rev. Burnett Clark officiating. Burial will be in the Tucker family cemetery. Viewing will be held Friday from 3-8 p.m. and Saturday form 10:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral.

Mary Bailess

HURT - Mary Patterson Bailess, 88, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at Autumn Care of Altavista.

Born June 28, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Patterson and Rosa Simpson Patterson.

She was married to Eddie Lee Bailess, who predeceased her.

She was a homemaker and a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Johnny Bailess and David Bailess, both of Hurt; two daughters, Frances Shelton and Martha Roark, both of Hurt; one step-daughter, Gladys Forrester of Burlington, N.C.; one sister, Clara Neal of Danville; three grandchildren and one step-grandchild.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Piney Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Carlton Smith and the Rev. Latta Terry officiating. Interment icon will be in Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her son, Johnny Bailess, at 268 Bailess Drive.
