CASCADE - Virginia Lee Fitts, 96, formerly of Charolais Farms, died Monday afternoon, Nov. 30, 1998, at Brian Center in Eden, N.C.
Born in Mecklenburg County, she was a member of Cascade Presbyterian Church.
She worked as a school teacher for Cascade and Schoolfield.
Survivors include one son, Sandford Allen Fitts, Sr. of Cascade; one daughter, Charlotte Fitts Cross of Vista, Calif.; six grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Chatham Town cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of her son, 6660 Cascade Road.

Maris Fralin
Maris Gourley Fralin, 76, formerly of 604 Kemper Road, died Friday morning, Nov. 27, 1998, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born March 16, 1922, in Danville, she was the daughter of James Gourley and Nora Mann Gourley Green.
She was married
to Charlie Fralin, who predeceased her.
She worked at Dan River Inc. in the weave room until retirement. She attended Arlington Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Charlotte Sparks of Sutherlin; one son-in-law, Harold L. Sparks of Sutherlin; three grandchildren, Robert Alan Dunn, Mark Steven Dunn and Kimberley Ann McNichols, all of Sutherlin; and one great-grandchild, Megan Nicole McNichols of Sutherlin.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. John Gentry officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of the daughter, 601 Slayton Road.
Charlie Lea
Charlie Frank Lea, 91, of 518 Doe St., died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born May 28, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Robert E. Lea and Clara Lea.
He was married
to Harriett Lee, who survives.
He worked with Thompson-Arthur Paving Company as a laborer. He was a member of Loyal Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, James F. Lea of New Castle, Del., Howard Garrett and Bobby Garrett, both of Danville; five daughters, Calra L. Fuller, Mabel Anderson, Harriett Poteat and Katie Garrett, all of Danville, and Priscilla Thompson of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Lalena Poteat of Milton, N.C.; 28 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Oak Hill cemetery with the Rev. Lovelle Maxwell officiating.
Viewing for family and friends will be 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence.
Buck Owen
Buck William Owen, 95, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at McCreary County Health Care Facility in Pine Knot, Ky.
Born Jan. 17, 1903, he was the son of George and Alice East Owen.
He was married
to Dutah Vaughn Owen, who predeceased him in 1993.
A lifelong resident of Danville, he moved to Monticello, Ky. in 1992 to live with his daughter. He retired from the Shipping Department of Dan River Inc. in 1968 with over 50 years of service.
Survivors include two sons, Ellis Owen of Cary, N.C. and David Owen of Danville; three daughters, Frances Irby of Augusta, Ga., Mary White of Monticello, Ky. and Shirley Lindsey of Newport News; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Marvin Hicks Funeral Home, 806 Kendrick Ave., Monticello.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening.
Agnes Pendleton
Agnes "Penny" Reynolds Pendleton, 86, of 127 Edwards Court, died Monday evening, Nov. 30, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after eight years of declining health.
Born Dec. 1, 1911, in Patrick County, she was the daughter of Volney P. Reynolds and Alma Scott Reynolds.
She was married
to Harry Raymond Pendleton who predeceased her on Aug. 2, 1979.
She lived in Floyd County and Meadows of Dan before moving to Danville in 1946. She worked for the Belk-Leggett store for 27 years before retiring, working sales in the fabric Department. She was a member of Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church and the Belk-Leggett retired employees club.
Survivors include three sons William E. Pendleton of Sandston, Raymond A. Pendleton of Pawleys Isle, S.C. and Jesse W. Pendleton of Gastonia, N.C.; one brother, E. Wayne Reynolds of Martinsville; one sister Doris R. Wood of Danville; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, 2 stepgrandchildren, and 3 step great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Thomas Pruitt
Thomas Coleman Pruitt, 52, of 30 Morris Ave., died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at Vencore Hospital in Greensboro.
Born Aug. 7, 1946, in Danville, he was the son of the late Willie Thomas Pruitt and Annie D. Pruitt, who survives.
He was a retired disabled painter.
In addition to his mother, survivors include three sisters, Lillie Lovelace, Doris Pruitt and Nancy Pruitt, all of Danville; and one brother, David Pruitt of Danville.
He was predeceased by one sister, Shirley Bradley, and one brother, Earl Pruitt.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Burial will be in Happy Home Church cemetery, Route 700.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Martha Malloy
NATHALIE - Martha Sweeney Malloy, 75, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
Born Jan. 13, 1923, in Halifax county.
She was married
to Thomas Malloy, who survives.
In addition to her husband, survivors include four daughters Victoria Malloy, Lois Malloy, Shirley Malloy and Claretha Malloy; five sons Edward Malloy, James Malloy, Thomas Malloy, Melvin Malloy and Hayes Malloy; one sister, Margaret Wright; one brother, Addie Sweeney; and 26 grandchildren, and a number of great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. today at St. Paul C.M.E. Church in Halifax with the Rev. George Brown officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
Remains of the deceased will be brought to the church one hour prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 5243 Stage Coach Road.
Margie Malloy
PITTSBURG, PA. - Margie Malloy, 45, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in South Boston, Va.
Born June 4, 1953, in New York, she was the daughter of Martha Sweeney Malloy and Thomas Malloy, who survives.
In addition to her father, survivors include one daughter, Dani Malloy; one son, Kenneth Malloy; four sisters, Victoria Malloy, Lois Malloy, Shirley Malloy and Claretha Malloy; and five brothers Edward Malloy, James Malloy, Thomas Malloy, Melvin Malloy and Hayes Malloy.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. today at St. Paul C.M.E. Church in Halifax with the Rev. George Brown officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
The remains of the deceased will be brought to the church one hour prior to the service.

George Miller
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - George William "Billy" Miller, 89, of 51 Horton Ave., died Friday morning Nov. 27, 1998, in Sound Shore Hospital.
Born Oct. 19, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of William C. Miller and Sarah Smith Miller.
He was married
to Gladys Miller, who predeceased him.
Survivors include five sons Andrew Miller, Jack Miller, Cary Miller, all of New Rochelle, George Miller, Jr. of Mt. Vernon, and Harold Miller of Boston, Ma.; two daughters, Irene Wiggins of Boston, Mass. and Katherine Miller of New Rochelle; one sister, Lucinda Miller of Java, Va.; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held noon Saturday at the Miller Family cemetery with the Rev. R.P. King officiating.
The family will receive friends 11 a.m. at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Womack, 252 Yeatts Store Road, Java.

Willie Barksdale
CHATHAM - Willie Green Barksdale, 73, of Route 5, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, in Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 10, 1925, in Halifax County, he was the son of Jim and Mary Barksdale.
He was married
to Fannie C. Barksdale, who predeceased him.
He was a member of Riceville Baptist Church, and a retired farmer.
Survivors include one son, Willie Lee Barksdale of San Diego, Calif.; two daughters, Lillie Bagley and Sheila Hicks, both of Danville; a foster son, Torey Wimbush of Danville; six brothers, James W. Barksdale, Marvin Barksdale, Larry Barksdale, and Richard Barksdale, all of Chester, Pa., John T. Barksdale of South Boston, and Garry Barksdale of Mich.; six sisters, Sarah Bailey of South Boston, Helen Whittington, Margie Barksdale, Lizzie Barksdale and Patrica Barksdale, all of Chester, Pa. and Mary Hunter of Atlanta, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Riceville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ronnie Walker officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

David East
John David East Sr., 83, of 17 Ashlawn Drive died Friday afternoon, Dec. 4, 1998, in the Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 8, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Jefferson East and Nellie Forney East.
He lived most of his life in Danville and had worked for Dan River, Inc. and later with the CIT group. He was a member of The Tabernacle.
He was married
to Edith Maxie East on Dec. 23, 1938.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, of the home, include a daughter, Bertha E. Vaughan of Hurt; two sons, James C. East of Clarksville and John David East Jr. of Houston; two brothers, Paul East and Sam East, both of Sheva; three sisters, Edna E. Townsend of Sheva, Ora E. Purdue of Edison, N.J., and Gladys E. Lewis of Lynchburg; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at The Tabernacle with the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham officiating. Interment
will be in the Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
James Leonard
James Ellis Leonard, 77, formerly of 348 Chatelaine Ave., died Friday afternoon, Dec. 4, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after residing the past 8 years in nursing homes and Piney Forest Health Care Center for the past two months.
Born Dec. 6, 1920, in Washington County, he was the son of Robert Leonard and Hattie Mae Harmon Leonard.
He spent most of his life in Danville and worked for Dan River, Inc. as a maintenance worker until he retired. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, James E. Leonard, Jr. of Jamestown, N.C., and Gary Leonard of Danville; two sisters, Ruth Albert Warn of Abingdon and Onetha Hicks of Terre Haute, Ind.; one brother, Orvis Leonard of Abingdon; and one grandchild.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Wayne Wallace officiating.
The family will receive friends at the former residence.
Cornelia Hughes
Cornelia Vanderbilt Thompson Hughes, 85, of 940 Newgas St., died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at her residence.
Born Sept. 2, 1913, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of James and Angline Thompson.
She was married
to Lindey Hughes, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie H. Oliver of Baltimore, Md. and Dorothy C. Wilson of Ringgold; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Beulah Baptist Church, with the Rev. Frankie Jones officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The remains may be viewed from this afternoon until 8 at L.H. Brooks & Brothers Funeral Home.

Herman Lowe
Herman Edward Lowe, 85, of 255 Brightwell Court, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, in the Riverside Health Care Center.
Born April 19, 1913, in Danville, he was the son of Clate Everret Lowe and Lucy Lester Lowe.
Lowe was married
to Empress Samuels Lowe, who survives.
He was retired from Dan River, Inc. where he was employed as a store keeper. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he had served as an Elder and Ward Clerk.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include a son, Carl D. Lowe, of Roanoke; two daughters, Judith L. Martin of Leasburg and Brenda L. Watlington of Danville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop W.T. Collins Jr. officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends following the service at the residence.
