Ruth Hardy
NEWPORT NEWS - Ruth B. Hardy, 79, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at her home after an extended illness.
Born July 31, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Wade Thomas Blair and Elsie Ruth Martin Blair.
She was married
to Martin Hugh Hardy, who died May 5, 1995.
She had been a resident of Newport News since 1940. She was a charter member of Hilton Christian Church and was a member of Beverly Hills Garden Club. She was employed by Newport News Shipbuilding in the Tabulating Department until her retirement.
Survivors include her son, Martin Hugh Hardy Jr. of Lake Charles, La.; three grandchildren, Martin Hughes Hardy III of Hampton, John Patrick Hardy of Florence, Ala., and Elizabeth Megan Hardy of Mount Juliet, Tenn; two sisters, Inez B. Anderson of Roanoke and Doris B. Walters of Fort Belvoir; one brother, Wade T. Blair Jr., of Danville; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Brosville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard McDowell officiating. A private burial will be held the in Owen family cemetery in Brosville.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News.
Beatrice Jennings
Beatrice Templeton Jennings, 89, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home after four years of declining health.
Born Dec. 23, 1908, in Columbia, S.C., she was the daughter of Robert Rhett Templeton and Ellen Lewis Templeton.
She was married
Aug. 6, 1932, to William Henry Jennings Sr., who died on Oct. 20, 1958.
She had lived in the Blairs community most of her life. She was a graduate of Schoolfield High School, was a 1932 graduate of Lynchburg General Hospital School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse. She was associated with Danville Regional Medical Center, Roman Eagle Nursing Home and private duty nursing prior to her retirement. She was a member of Blairs Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, William Henry Jennings Jr., of Danville; two daughters, Sara J. Camden of Roanoke and Nan Lewis Simmons of Farmville; one sister, Francis T. Gainor of Lexington, N.C.; one brother, William D. Templeton of Fort Mill, S.C.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Nell Davis Collie.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Melvin Winters, the Rev. Nathaniel Jones and the Rev. Floyd Jones officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her son, 435 Parker Road.
Lloyd McDaniel
GRETNA - Lloyd Hilton McDaniel, 64, of 1341 Glade Road, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 25, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James McDaniel and Sarah Francis Doss McDaniel.
He was married
to Belle Holt McDaniel, who survives.
He was a retired employee of the Virginia Department of Transportation.
In addition to the wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Gary McDaniel of Danville; three daughters, Patricia Parris of Danville, Pam Bailey of Dry Fork and Tammy McDaniel of Hurt; two sisters, Margaret Glass and Shirley Wilburn, both of South Boston; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James Manuel officiating. Burial will be in Straightstone Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of his daughter, 133 Thrush Road, Hurt.
William Shavers
William Herman Shavers, 85, of 968 Kentuck Road, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, in Veterans Medical Center in Salem.
Born June 16, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Edward Shavers and Lucinda Adams.
He was a mechanic for Danville Chrysler-Plymouth. He was a member of Prospect Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mayzie C. Shavers of the residence; and a brother, Thomas Shavers of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at Prospect Baptist Church with the Rev. Demetrius Crews officiating.
A viewing for family and friends will be held today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence.
John Slade, Sr.
DOVER, Del. - John E. Slade Sr., died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at Kent General Bay Health Hospital after a short illness.
Born April 18, 1923, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Mary Sue Jeffers and Weldon Slade.
He was married
to Catherine Slade who survives.
He was a retired veteran and a member of Mount Plymouth A.M. Church in Elton, Del.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four daughters, Doris Long of Danville, Va., Paulette H. Jones of Blanch, N.C., Florine Thorne of Oldsmar, Fla., Shirley Brown of Detroit, Mich.; three sons, Gary D. Holloway of Washington, D.C., John E. Slade Jr., of South Amboy, N.J. and William Slade of Wilmington; one brother, Joe C. Slade of Yanceyville, N.C.; three sisters, Maudie Jeffers of Blanch, N.C., Edna Johnson, of Yonkers, N.Y., and Ann Lea of San Francisco, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 7-8 p.m. today at Binnie Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Dover. Burial will be in Bear Delaware Veteran cemetery.
Frances Taylor
Frances Vernon Taylor, 74, of 115 Kenmore Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 10, 1924, in Person County, N.C., she was the daughter of David Thomas Vernon and Mary Sue Snipes Vernon.
She was married
to Otha G. Taylor on April 4, 1942, who survives.
She lived most of her life in Danville and was employed with Dan River Inc. for 30 years until her retirement in 1986.
She was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church and American Busness Women.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Arline Taylor Dawson of Burke; one sister, Bonnie Belle Pritchard of Portsmouth; and two grandsons.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. today at Townes Funeral Home memorial chapel with the Rev. Adolf Otersen and the Rev. Ralph McCormack officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Alfred Willis
CHATHAM - Alfred Willis, 88, of 3401 Anderson Mill Road, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 6, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of George T. Willis and Leigh Haley Willis.
He was married
to Eva Bryant Willis, who survives.
He was a member of Greenbay Christian Church. He was a retired farmer and later worked for the Pittsylvania County school board.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Dell W. Gillispie of Chatham; one granddaughter, Melissa Soto; one grandson, Richard Vaughan; and two great-grandsons, Alex Soto and Tony Soto.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Greenbay Christian Church with the Rev. Rudolph A. Hearn officiating. Burial will be in Bryant family cemetery in Chatham.

Rosa Bagby
Rosa Elizabeth Jordan Bagby, 79, of 510 Linden Place, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 10, 1919, in Norfolk, she was the daughter of Richard Dudley Jordan Jr. and Helen Fay Brigg.
She was married
to Edward Ballou Bagby, who died Feb. 2, 1998.
She was a graduate of the College of William and Mary. She taught in the Danville school system, and was president of the Shakespeare Club; former president of the Garden Club of Danville, and member of Danville Presbyterian Episcopal Church of Women. She was a member of The Wednesday Club, the Danville Golf Club and was involved in community activities. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.
Survivors include one son, Richard Jordan Bagby of Danville; one brother, Richard Jordan of Fort Myers, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Friday at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany with the Rev. James Mathieson officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Annie Carr
HALIFAX - Annie Strange Carr, 58, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
She was born Feb. 3, 1940, in Halifax County.
She was married
to Marvis Carr, who survives.
In addition to her husband, survivors include four daughters, Darlene Carr of Halifax, Debra Sanders of Pasadena, Md., Cheryl Carr and Kamala Carr of Glen Burnie, Md.; three sisters, Mamie Faulkner and Marjorie Williams of Queens, N.Y., and Thelma Strange of Brandon, Fla.; two brothers, Timothy Strange of Newport News and James Strange of Hampton; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. today at Trinity Baptist Church in South Boston with the Rev. Harold Roberts Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Banister Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

John H. Doolin
John H. Doolin, 70, of 606 Northmont Blvd., died suddenly Tuesday morning, Dec. 8, 1998, in the emergency room of Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 11, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Edmond Doolin and Martha Barber Doolin.
He was in partnership with his brother at Doolin's Auto Sales for the past 50 years, and was a former member of the Danville Moose Lodge. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Debra Doolin Easley of Pelham, N.C.; one son-in-law, Robert "Pete" Easley Jr., of Pelham, N.C.; one brother, Hugh Stanley Doolin of Danville; one sister, Evelyn Doolin East of Danville; and one grandson, Robert Allen Easley, III of Pelham, N.C.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Marvin M. Doolin and Clyde J. Doolin.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Norine Hall
BLAIRS - Norine A. Hall, 92, of 1176 Carter Lodge Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, in Winter Haven, Fla.
Born April 25, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of David James Atkinson and Mary Shields Atkinson.
She was married
to Harold C. Hall, Sr., who died in 1973.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Chestnut Level Baptist Church, and former president of the Women's Missionary Union. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors include one son, Harold C. "Pete" Hall, Jr., of Lake Wales, Fla.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Jewell Hall Owen; two sisters, Naomi Logan and Mary Ellen Atkinson; four brothers, Abner Atkinson, S.W. Atkinson, Wallace Atkinson and Hopson Atkinson. She was also predeceased by one grandson and one infant granddaughter.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Chestnut Level Baptist Church with the Rev. Julian Griffin, the Rev. Brady Willis and the Rev. Rusty Mullins officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
