Irvin Burton
Irvin C. Burton, 89, of Old Richmond Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 3, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John H. Burton and Carrie Pritchett Burton.
He was married
to Vada Ferguson Burton.
He was a retired Dan River Inc. employee and was owner of Burton Tire Co. He was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, trustee, and was treasurer for 57 years. For the past 20 years he was a member of the NAACP, served as a maintenance technician for Pittsylvania County Community Action. He also served as vice chariman of the Pittsylvania County Democratic Party, and was a founder and president of the Dan River-Blairs Civic League.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy B. Neals of Danville; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Ralph Cypress and the Rev. Thomas Johnson Sr. officiating. The remains may be viewed at L. H. Brooks Brothers Funeral Home today from 1-8 p.m. At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence.
Burial will be at Bethel Baptist Church cemetery.
Brenda Cash
SCOTTSBURG - Brenda Tomlin Cash, 49, of 1229 Red Level Church Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at Duke Medical Center.
Born July 10, 1949, in Lexington, she was the daughter of Ethel Tomlin Garren of Scottsburg.
She was married
to Kenneth Lee Cash, who survives.
In addition to her mother and husband, both of Scottsburg, survivors include two brothers, Dorman E. Watts of Alton, Kyle D. Watts of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. ; one sister, Linda Marquez of Chesterfield; two step-sons, David Cash of Moneta and Kenneth Cash, Jr., of Nashville, Tenn.; and one step-daughter, Vickie Cash of Floyd.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Red Level Church of God with the Rev. Tony Brooks officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Charles Davidson
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Charles Preston Davidson, 72, of Columbus, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, at his residence.
Born June 18, 1926, in Panama City, Fla., he was the son of Lola Register Davidson of Columbus and the late Charles Preston Davidson Sr.
He was a graduate of Jordan High School and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a charter member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, where he was active and served on the church council for many years. He was a partner in Davidson Textiles Inc.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Betty Astin Davidson of Columbus; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael C. and Lisa Davidson and Richard A. and Pamela Davidson, both of Cataula, and Steven C. and Bonni Davidson of Midland; nine grandchildren, Emily Bone of Marietta, Lorie Davidson of Midland, Tori and Brittany Davidson, both of Columbus, Jarrod and Patrick Davidson, both of Cataula, and Kent, Patrick and Hollis Callaway, all of Cataula.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Matthews Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ernst T. Bentsen and the Rev. John L. Satterwhite officiating. Burial will be in Parkhill cemetery.
Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road, is in charge of arrangements.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. today.

J.D. Helms
BROSVILLE - J.D. Helms, 69, of 140 Charming Road, died Thursday afternoon, Dec. 10, 1998, at his residence after nine years of declining health.
Born March 29, 1929, in Patrick County, he was the son of John W. Helms and Dollie Susan Radford Helms.
He was first married
to Josephine Kelly Helms, who predeceased him on May 20, 1984. He was then married
July 17, 1993, to Linda Walker Helms, who survives.
He spent most of his life in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County where he was a retired cattle farmer. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors includes one stepson, Kevin Strader of Providence, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Dale Loftis of Reidsville, N.C.; three sisters, Eunice Clemmons of Floyd, Irene Garnan of Roanoke and Lillie Agnew of Patrick Springs; three brothers, Clyde Helms of Pamplin, Elmer Helms and Willard Helms, both of Stuart; and two stepgrandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Marvin Brumfield and the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating. Interment
will be at Highland Burial Park.
Ellie Holton
Ellie Fitzgerald Ogburn Holton, 102, of 203 Arnett Blvd., died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Jan. 8, 1895, in Danville, she was the daughter of James H. Fitzgerald and Sallie Corbin Fitzgerald.
She was married
to Julian S. Ogburn, and later to Elwood F. Holton, both of whom predeceased her.
She was a retired teacher with the Danville public schools. She attended the University of Virginia and received a bachelor of arts from Lynchburg College. She was affiliated with Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. She held memberships in the National Society Magna Carta Dames, the Society of Descendants of the Knights of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, the Danville Historical Society, the Annie Eliza Johns Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Danville Geneological Society. She was also a Daughter of the Charlemagne Association and a charter member of the Henry Corbin Chapter Colonial Dames 17th Century.
Survivors include a daughter, Helen O. Harris of Danville; four granddaughters, Kathleen H. Boltinghouse, Ellen H. Johnston, Eleanor O. Saunders and Penny O. Keenan.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Pearl F. Coleman and Ruth F. Simpson; two sons Julian S. Ogburn and Jim F. Ogburn; and one grandson, Julian S. Ogburn III.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Lee Roy Carter
Lee Roy Carter, 80, of 309 Edgewood Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for a number of years, and he spent four days in serious condition at the hospital before his death.
Born March 17, 1918, in Danville, he was the son of Frank Carter and Bessie Sperry Carter.
He was employed by Dan River Inc. as a slicer in the No. 4 dress room and retired in 1980 after 45 years of service.
Carter served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater during the liberation of the Philippines and received the Victory Medal.
Carter was a charter member of the Westover Drive Church of God and a member of the Dan River Retired Workers Club.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Young Carter of the home; two sons, James Ralph Carter and Melvin Frank Carter, both of Danville; his sister, Ruby Thompson of Danville; his brother, the Rev. Floyd R. Carter of Danville; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Westover Drive Church of God with the Rev. Griffin Duncan and the Rev. Neal Isom officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home 7-8:30 p.m. today. At other times the family will be at the residence.
James Hood
James McRean "Mac" Hood, 72, of 105 Parrott St., died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at Triangle Hospice House in Hillsboro, N.C., after one week in Veterans Hospital in Durham. He had been in declining health for a number of years.
Born July 23, 1926, in Marion, S.C., he was the son of Robert Cary Hood Sr. and Elizabeth Gertrude Clark Hood.
He was first married
to Shelby Jean Roman Hood of Marion, S.C., and later, in June 1982, was married
to Charlotte Bryant Weaver Hood, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Marion, S.C., and had been a resident of Danville for the past 16 years. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the American Legion, the Moose Lodge and the American Legion Post 55 Honor Guard. He was a farm equipment salesman before working as a security guard until his retirement. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Richard McRean Hood of Augusta, Ga. and David Joe Hood of Johnson City, Tenn.; one daughter, Sandra Hood Campbell of Bristol; three brothers R.C. Hood Jr., Cecil Hood and Chalmers Hood, all of Marion, S.C.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Bennie Poovey officiating. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Ethel Knick
Ethel P. Knick, 87, formerly of Westover Hills and 137 Harris Place, died Friday morning, Dec. 11, 1998, at Brian Center, Yanceyville, N.C., where she had been a patient for four and a half years.
Born Dec. 11, 1911, in Spartanburg, S.C., she was the daughter of John Walter Posey and Angie Belle Duncan Posey.
She was married
to Van Buren "Red" Knick, who died July 2, 1972.
She lived most of her life in the Westover Hills community. She was employed by Dan River Inc. for more than 30 years, her last job being that of timekeeper. She later owned and operated the Wooding Avenue Laundremat. She attended Averett, Stratford and Danville Community colleges. She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, where she served as president, and was also a member of the Dames Court of Honor.
Survivors include one son, Allan E. Knick of Danville; one brother, Walter R. Posey of Tallassee, Ala.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sons, Raymond L. Knick and Jackie N. Knick.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. O.H. Burton officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of her son, Allan Knick, 134 Harris Place.
Albert Lee Sr.
Albert Lee Sr., 74, of 1449 Clark Mill Road, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 5, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Ruffin and Eliza L. Lee.
He was married
to Gracie Gunn Lee, who survives.
He served as Sunday school teacher, usher and choir member at White Rock Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired employee of Dan River Inc.
In addition to his wife of Ringgold, survivors include five grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at White Rock Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Curtis Strader officiating. Burial will be in White Rock Church cemetery.

Otis Leonard
Otis R. Leonard, 73, of 8960 Old N.C. Highway, U.S. 86 North, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at his residence.
Born Feb. 11, 1925, in Danville, he was the son of Joseph W. Leonard and Rudy Burks Leonard.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy as air crew member on a B-24 bomber. He received the Purple Heart in the Pacific Theater. He was a retired maintenance engineer at the Danville post office. Prior to that, he was employed as head of the electric department at Dan River Inc..
Leonard was a pilot for 60 years and was lieutenant colonel of the Danville Civil Air Patrol, as well as past commander. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 325, the V.F.W. Post No. 647, D.A.V., and the Purple Heart Association. He was a member of the Morotock Masonic Lodge, a 33-degree mason with the Danville Scottish Rite Bodies and a member of the Shriners. He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, Larry W. Leonard of Danville; one stepson, Randall Abbott of Danville; one sister, Colleen Adams of Danville; one brother, Dr. James Leonard of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren and one stepgranddaughter.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Ron Mateer officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends at St. Luke's United Methodist Chapel.
Una Schroeter
Una M. Schroeter, 90, of 600 Main St., died Friday evening, Dec. 4, 1998, at Elder Nursing Home in Rocky Mount after a two-year period of declining health.
Born May 29, 1908, in Jamaica, West Indies, she was the daughter of Phillip and Elfreda Schroeter.
She was a member of Christ The King Church for many years upon moving to Danville.
Survivors include one sister, Alice D. Davis of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers, Aston A. Schroeter of Danville and Laureston Schroeter of Bahamas, W.I.
Donated her body to medical science at Virginia Medical College. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ The King Lutheran Church, 1172 Franklin Turnpike, with the Rev. Jim Kleinfelter officiating.
The family will receive friends after the memorial service at the residence of her brother, 329 Greenwich Circle.

Susie Vaughan
SOUTH BOSTON - Susie Wilborn Vaughan, 95, of 8200 River Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at her home.
Born May 9, 1903, in Person County, N.C., she was the daughter of Thomas Wilborn and Mary Reaves Wilborn.
She was married
to Herbert Watkins Vaughan, who predeceased her.
She attended Friendship Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas Dewey Vaughan of Alton and Otis Clifton Vaughan of South Boston; three daughters, Emma Lou Bass and Barbara Vaughan Conner, both of South Boston, and Jane Vaughan Hammack of Altavista; 19 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons and two daughters.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and, at other times, at the residence.
