HALIFAX - Nellie Womack Spencer, 59, of 1062 Chatham Road, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 15, 1939, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Charlie B. Womack and Mary Ola Barksdale Womack.
She was married
to Jesse Rogers Spencer Sr., who survives. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband of Halifax, survivors include one son, Jesse Rogers Spencer Jr. of Halifax; one daughter, Vickie Lynne Spencer of Vernon Hill; one sister, Patricia Atkins of Marion; two brothers, William Womack of Vernon Hill, Willie Brann Womack of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Mack Womack and L.C. Womack.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tony Brooks officiating. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Lucy Watlington
Lucy Ann Weatherford Watlington, 90, formerly of Pelham, died Saturday evening, Dec. 12, 1998, at Brian Center Nursing Facility.
She was born in August 1908 in Caswell County, N.C.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Caswell County. She was a faithful member of New Ephesus Baptist Church. She was a retired farmer.
Survivors include a devoted granddaughter, Linda Adams, and one great-granddaughter, Camesha Adams; one foster son, Clifton Williamson, all of Danville; a host of nieces, nephews, three sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, and other relatives and treasured friends.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at New Ephesus Baptist Church with the Rev. William E. Lee officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-7:30 p.m. today at Johnson & Sons Funeral Home in Reidsville, N.C., and may be contacted at other times at the home of Annie and Herbert Watlington, 5821 Allison Road, Pelham, N.C.
Averett Compton
CHATHAM - Willie Averett Compton, 78, of 4688 Spring Garden Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center after six months of declining health.
Born Sept. 5, 1920, in the Ringgold community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of W. Lynwood Compton and Bertha Henderson Compton.
He was married
Jan. 26, 1985, to Erma Bryant Compton, who survives.
He had lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County. He retired from construction work, working as a concrete supervisor for a number of different construction companies. He was a member of the Spring Garden Presbyterian Church. He served with the United States Army as a paratrooper during World War II and the Korean conflict.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Carl L. Compton of Strongsville, Ohio, and William A. Paulius of Fergus Falls, Minn.; one stepson, Timothy E. Dallas of Mebane, N.C.; two step-daughters, Susan D. Magerkurth of Roanoke and Ellen D. Dodson of Spring Garden; one brother, Eldridge W. Compton of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters, Marie C. Sadd and Betty C. Gentry, both of Danville; five grandchildren and seven stepgrandchldren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Spring Garden Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. R.J. Barber Jr. officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

W. T. Epps
HALIFAX - W.T. Epps Jr., of 5081 Chatham Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born April 10, 1927, in Halifax County, he was the son of Walter Thomas Epps Sr. and Mabel Arendall Epps.
He was married
to Jean Bane Epps, who survives.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and was past president of the Halifax County Cattleman's Association.
In addition to his wife of Halifax, survivors include one daughter, Dianne Seamster of Clover, S.C.; three sons, W.T. "Tommy" Epps III of South Boston and Bane Epps and Mac Epps, both of Halifax; three sisters, Peggy Palmer, Juanita Shields and Kitty Hayslett, all of Lynchburg; two brothers, William Lee Epps of Vernon Hill and Ronald Dean Epps of Rustburg; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tim Earnhardt and the Rev. Dr. Elwood Seamster officiating. Burial will be in Asbury United Methodist Church cemetery.

James Taylor
SPENCER - James Stanley Taylor, 56, of 4878 George Taylor Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born in Henry County, he was the son of Frank Stanley Taylor, who predeceased him, and Mildred Taylor, who survives.
He was married
to Nancy Martin Taylor, who survives.
He was a member of Mayo Christian Church. He was self-employed.
In addition to his mother of Spencer and wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Stanley Davis Taylor of Spencer; one daughter, Rhonda Taylor White of Knoxville, Tenn; one brother, Wayne Taylor of Spencer; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Mayo Christian Church with Pastor James Jordan and the Rev. Kenneth McFarling officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Jack Travis
Jack Norman Travis, 71, of 621 Main St., died Tuesday evening, Dec. 15, 1998, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C., after several years of declining health.
Born Dec. 24, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Edward Travis and Alice Travis Travis.
He was formerly married
to Nancy Lea Cook, who predeceased him on March 12, 1998.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was retired from Danville Plywood. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Travis Reid of Danville; two sons, Norman Lee Travis of Pelham, N.C., and Edward Arnold Travis Sr. of Danville; one sister, Helen Johnson of Danville; and five grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Schoolfield cemetery with the Rev. W. L. Wade officiating.

James Bowman
CHATHAM - James R. Bowman, 71, of 400 Bennett Lane, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 12, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John and Sylvia Bowman.
He was married
to Lettie M. Bowman, who survives.
He was retired from Dan River Inc.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Lyndell Bowman of Falls Church; two daughters, Loretta J. Jones of Danville, and Annette Bowman-Hartridge of Greenbelt, Md.; one sister, Catheline Jones of Chatham; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Baby Cockman
CASCADE - Serena Rae Cockman, of 252 Marlin Road, died at birth Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 17, 1998, she was the daughter of Michael Travis Cockman and Andrea Huffstetler Cockman, who survive.
In addition to her parents, survivors include maternal grandparents, Andy Huffstetler and Patsy Huffstetler of Danville; paternal grandfather, Hurley L. Cockman Jr. of Cascade; maternal great-grandparents, Harold Moorefield and Gladys Moorefield of Danville, Clarence Huffstetler and Beatrice Huffstetler of Danville.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Duane Blevins and the Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Richard Martin Jr.
CHERRY HILL, N.J. - Richard Hickson Martin Jr., 73, of Cherry Hill, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, of natural causes, at West Jersey Hospital, Marlton division.
He was born in Durham, N.C.
He was married
to Amy Oakes Martin for 49 years.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served from 1943 to 1946. He attended Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, graduating with a bachelor's in architectural engineering and civil engineering. He was a licensed professional engineer for the commonwealth of Virginia.
A resident of Cherry Hill for 32 years, he worked for Texaco Inc. for 33 years, serving as manager of construction and maintenance for the northeast region. He retired in 1987.
In addition to his wife of Cherry Hill, survivors include three daughters, Dianne M. Boswell of Pilot Mountain, N.C., Caryl M. Kelly of Ocean City, N.J., and Nancy M. D'Andrea of Langhorne, Pa.; one son, Richard Hickson Martin III of West Berlin, N.J.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Townes Memorial Chapel in Danville, Va., with the Rev. Jay Ashby officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. Saturday morning at the funeral home prior to the service.
Jane Nance
RINGGOLD - Jessie Jane Nance, 70, of 1440 Little Creek Road, State Route 732, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after a year of declining health.
Born May 28, 1928, in the Climax community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Wiley I. Watson and Hattie Walker Watson.
She was married
Feb. 19, 1949, to Alfred Wayne (A.W.) Nance, who survives.
She lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County. She graduated from Climax High School and attended the former Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She had worked with the late Dr. Drake Pritchett as a scrub nurse for a number of years until his retirement. She was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two brothers, Denton I. Watson of Danville and Roderick Watson of Climax; five sisters, Hazel W. Oakes and Margaret W. Edwards, both of Gretna, Anges W. Williams of Ringgold, Rebecca W. Owens of Climax and Mabel W. Tomberlin of Wyoming; and five grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Tereesa N. Rice; one son, Terry Smith Nance; and three sisters; and three brothers.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Grace Design United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Holcomb-McLain officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
