SOUTH BOSTON - Donald Mitchell Poole, 45, of 1188 Virgie Cole Road, died Dec. 16, 1998 at his home.
Born Sept. 1, 1953, in South Boston, he was the son of Truiet Singleton Poole and Mary Hite Poole.
He was married
to Cynthia Hamm Poole, who survives.
He was employed as a mechanic with Burlington Industries, Clarksville.
He was a member of Mount Cana United Methodist Church and Woodman of the World Camp 106.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Poole Farmer of Halifax, and Donna Poole Gilbert of South Boston; one sister, Kathy Evans of South Boston; and one brother, Paul Douglas Poole of South Boston.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Mount Cana United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Lewis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Brooks Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
Lucille Shumate
Lucille Brown Shumate, 81, formerly of 86 Ashlawn Drive, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born July 14, 1917, in Lexington, N.C., she was the daughter of Clifton Brown and Nancy McBride Brown.
She was married
to Floyd Shumate, who predeceased her on May 3, 1981.
She was retired from Dan River Inc. where she worked for over 40 years. She was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include one son, Richard Shumate of Ringgold; one daughter, Gloria Tanksley of Danville; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Betty Jeffrey.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Freddie Vicks officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her daughter, 284 Fagan St.
Lucille Stephens
Lucille Carter Stephens, 90, of 312 Montague St., died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 19, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Eugene Carter and Malinda Stutz Carter.
She was married
to Walter L. Stephens, who died Feb. 8, 1998.
She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, June and John Holshouser of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Walter L. "Boots" Stephens.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Joey Faucette officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her grandson, David Holshouser, 108 Janice Court (Southwyck Farms).

Nannie Tate
Nannie Meadows Tate, 83, of 2816 R&L Smith Drive, Route 41, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at Piney Forest Health Care Center after two years of declining health.
Born July 6, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Keatts and Mary Gregory Keatts.
She had lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County, where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Mountain View Emmanuel Holiness Church.
She was married
to Luther Martin Meadows, who died in 1944, and was later married
Feb. 5, 1955, to Ruben Vincent Tate, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Peggy M. Siggers and Joyce M. Merricks, both of Danville, and Jane M. Turner of Pelham, N.C.; one son, Ronnie Tate of Danville; two stepdaughters, Nellie T. Wiles of Danville and Elaine Tate of Callands; one stepson, Nelson Raymond Tate of Danville; two sisters, Elsie K. Parsons of Hurt and Dollie K. Ayers of Altavista; one brother, Ulyes Keatts of Altavista; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Joey Yeatts officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Baby Cockman
CASCADE - Serena Rae Cockman, of 252 Marlin Road, died at birth Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 17, 1998, she was the daughter of Michael Travis Cockman and Andrea Huffstetler Cockman, who survive.
In addition to her parents, survivors include maternal grandparents, Andy Huffstetler and Patsy Huffstetler of Danville; paternal grandfather, Hurley L. Cockman Jr. of Cascade; maternal great-grandparents, Harold Moorefield and Gladys Moorefield of Danville, Clarence Huffstetler and Beatrice Huffstetler of Danville.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. today at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Duane Blevins and the Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating. Interment

Tion Jomile Glass, 22, of 111 Beaver Mill Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 23, 1976, in Danville, he was the son of Norman W. Glass Jr. and Sharon Jeanette Mayo Glass.
In addition to his parents, survivors include his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Mayo of Danville; and his paternal grandmother, Corine Glass of Danville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel. Interment
in Highland Burial Park.

Jessie Hubbard
REIDSVILLE - Jessie Reynolds Hubbard, 92, formerly of 435 Oregon Hill Road, died Friday afternoon, Dec. 18, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been a patient in Brian Center, Yanceyville, N.C., for two years.
Born Dec. 17, 1906, in the Grit community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Walter Reynolds and Nannie Glenn Reynolds.
She was married
to Fred Lawson Hubbard, who died Oct. 12, 1964.
She was a homemaker and a member of Lively Stones Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Joan H. French of Oregon Hill Road and Sue H. Barber of Eden; four sisters, Glennie Bobbitt, Nellie Haney, both of Winston-Salem, Brownie Saunders of Tennessee and Ellie Layne of Renan; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Stafford G. Hubbard; a sister, Georgia Hatcher; and two brothers, Horace Reynolds and Russell Reynolds.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel in Danville, Va., with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating. Burial will be in the Mulberry Baptist Church cemetery near Gretna.

Alicia Massey
WIRTZ - Alicia Ann Kendrick Massey, 41, died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998.
She was born Feb. 2, 1957, she was the daughter of Norman and Terry Lynn Kendrick.
She was married
to Larry Allen Massey, who predeceased.
Survivors include one son, Justin Lee Kendrick of the residence; one daughter, Yvette Lee Kendrick of Chatham; ; mother, Ann Marie Reynolds Ittner of Chesterfield County; her brother, Michael D. Kendrick of Chesterfield County.
She was predeceased by one grandson.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today at the Lumpkin family cemetery in Penhook.

Christine Meadows
GRETNA - Christine Haskins Meadows, 82, of 747 Main St., died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, in Danville.
Born Dec. 27, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Harrison A. Haskins Sr. and Mazie Thacker Haskins.
She was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. She was a retired employee of Dan River Inc.
Survivors include two daughters, Priscilla M. Gillie of Danville and Harriett M. Barker of Richmond; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. Ron Mateer officiating. Interment
will be in Gretna Burial Park.

Jane Nance
RINGGOLD - Jessie Jane Nance, 70, of 1440 Little Creek Road, State Route 732, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after a year of declining health.
Born May 28, 1928, in the Climax community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Wiley I. Watson and Hattie Walker Watson.
She was married
Feb. 19, 1949, to Alfred Wayne (A.W.) Nance, who survives.
She lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County. She graduated from Climax High School and attended the former Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She had worked with the late Dr. Drake Pritchett as a scrub nurse for a number of years until his retirement. She was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two brothers, Denton I. Watson of Danville and Rhoderic Watson of Climax; five sisters, Hazel W. Oakes and Margaret W. Edwards, both of Gretna, Agnes W. Williams of Ringgold, Rebecca W. Owens of Climax and Mabel W. Tomberlin of Wyoming; and five grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Tereesa N. Rice; one son, Terry Smith Nance; and three sisters; and three brothers.
