Buster Talbott
Charles Maurice "Buster" Talbott Sr., 84, of 5886 South Boston Highway, died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, after eight days in Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health. Born Oct. 12, 1914, in Gretna, he was the son of Charles Brown Talbott and Rebecca Saunders Talbott. He was married
to Mary Cain Talbott who predeceased him on Nov. 28, 1995.
He lived all of his life in Danville and Pittsylvania County. He was employed with the former Danville Traction and Power Co., prior to employment with City of Danville Public Works Department as diesel mechanic until retirement. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include two sons, James D. "Jim" Talbott of Danville and Don Charlesworth of Schnecksville, Pa.; one sister May T. Phillips of Semora, N.C.; one daughter Amy Testerman of Sutherlin; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Charles M. Talbott Jr.; five sisters and one brother.
A graveside service will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jimmy Burks officiating.

Thomas Buchanan
l@normal:SOUTH BOSTON - Thomas Edison Buchanan, 64, of 1178 Alphonse Dairy Road, died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 16, 1934, in Halifax County, he was the son of Oscar Page Buchanan and Gertrude Ladd Wilkerson.
He was owner and operator of Logging and Sawmill until his retirement. He was a member of Union United Church of Christ.
In addition to his mother of South Boston, survivors include two sons, Thomas E. Buchanan Jr. of Louisa and Charles W. Buchanan of Halifax; one daughter Penny B. Baldwin of Hampton; three sisters Laverne Humphries of Roxboro, N.C., Nell Thaxton and Willie Wilson, both of South Boston; one brother Paige Buchanan of South Boston; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother Oscar Clayton Buchanan.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Virgilina cemetery in Virgilina.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Jessie Chamberlain
Jessie Williams Chamberlain, 82, of 219 Green Acre Drive, died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at her residence after two years of declining health.
Born Dec. 30, 1915, she was the daughter of James Boisseau and Lillie Poindexter Williams.
She was married
April 8, 1933, to Herman Edwin Chamberlain, who predeceased her Jan. 26, 1996.
She had lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She retired from Thalhimers Dept. Store, head of the Children's Department in 1983, after 25 years of service. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church where she was member, and the first president of Wesley Chapel's Friends and Neighbors Club. She was the last surviving charter member of the Airport Sunshine Club, where she held many offices and served as president for several years. She was also a member and past president of Alpha Club (Thalhimer's retirees), a member and past president of Keen Street Baptist Church Young at Heart Club and a former member of the American Women's Business Association.
Survivors include one daughter Glenda C. Boswell of Danville; one son Larry Herman Chamberlain of Mechanicsville; four sisters, Darna W. Wiles, Empress W. Wade, Frances W. Dalton and Eunice W. Robertson, all of Ringgold; and one brother, Frank Benton Williams of Ringgold; and one grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter Joan Carolyn Chamberlain; one sister Willie W. Royster; and two brothers Hunter Williams and Nelson Williams.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Howard Green. Internement will be at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Lewis Dawson
l@normal:SOUTH BOSTON - Lewis Harper Dawson, 93, of 1105 Cluster Springs Road, died, Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Nov. 30, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Johnson Dawson and Eliza Catherine Binford Dawson.
He was married
to Zelma Ruth Hocutt Dawson, who predeceased him and later to Margaret Hudson Dawson, who survives.
The Rev. Dr. Lewis was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church and the Halifax Masonic Lodge. He was a retired Baptist minister.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, survivors include three daughters, Laura Catherine Fortune of Evington, Ruth Hocutt Majette of Grimesland, N.C., and Alice Amanda Berry of Mebane, N.C.; one son the Rev. Lewis Edward Dawson of Jonesboro, Ga; one sister Catherine D. Wendt of Richmond; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Black Walnut Baptist Church with the Rev. Grover Stevens and the Rev. Shelton Miles officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, Cluster Springs.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Willie Martin Jr.
AXTON - Willie Nathaniel Martin Jr., 50, of 1144 Riley Farm Road, died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at Duke University emergency room.
Born in Pittsylvania County on July 19, 1948, he was the son of Willie N. Martin Sr. and Gracie Waller Martin.
He was married
to Janet Holland Martin, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of Pittsylvania County and an employee of Hooker Furniture Corporation for 30 years. A member of Christ Temple Holy Church, he also served as a deacon, adult Sunday school teacher and treasurer. He was a member of Echoes of Christ Ministry and a member of Good News Prison Ministry.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include three daughters, Kesia L. Martin, NaToya S. Martin and Cynthia D. Martin, all of the home; one son, Shannon D. Martin of the home; two brothers, James L. Waller of Hackensack, N.J., and Robert C. Waller of Martinsville; two sisters, Druscilla Bland of Hackensack, N.J., and Beverly M. Walker of Danville; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Christ Temple Holy Church, with the Rev. G.J. Carter officiating. Burial will be in the Martin Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at Hairston Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Doris Moser
CHATHAM - Doris Pierce Moser, 78, of 1124 Cherrystone Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at the residence.
Born Nov. 5, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of James Samuel Pierce and Alice Nickles Pierce.
She was married
to Jesse Franklin Moser, who survives.
She was a member of Open Bible Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Margaret M.
White of Ringgold and Sadie M. Tosh of Chatham; two sons, Leon Moser of Chatham and Charlie Moser of Gretna; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son Ryland Watson Moser; two sisters, Effie Compton and Julia Brooks; six brothers, Will Pierce, Buster Pierce, Ulla Pierce, Otis Pierce, Frank Pierce and Bunyon Pierce.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Open Bible Baptist Church with the Rev. Dean A. Lamphere, the Rev. Albert Moser, the Rev. Lee Von Elme and the Rev. Deano E. Lamphere officiating. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park, Chatham.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the church and at other times at the residence.

William Peers
William Walker Peers, 91, of 149 Westhampton Ave. died Sunday night, Dec. 20, 1998, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 23, 1907, in Louisa Va., he was the son of George Lynwood Peers and Elsie Collins Peers.
He was married
for 44 years to Frances Terry Peers, who predeceased him July 14, 1986.
He was educated in Henrico County public school system. He was employed with Virginia Insurance Inspection and Rating Bureau in Richmond until transferred to Danville Feb. 28, 1933, as a special agent. He was a member of Four Mile Creek Church. He also served four years in the United States Army in World War II. He established and worked at Peers & Wiseman Insurance Company until his retirement. Later he retired to a cattle and horse farm.
Survivors include one sister Waverly P. Crouch of Richmond.
A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. today in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Elbert Williamson officiating.

Randall Sellers
Randall Wilton Sellers, 81, of 126 Sellers St., died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at his residence after seven months of declining health.
Born Dec. 26, 1916, in Cheraw, S.C., he was the son of Wilton Lorraine Sellers and Mary Virginia Threadgill Sellars.
He was married
to Jeanette Sellers.
He lived most of his life in the Danville area where he and his brothers founded Sellers Brothers Contractors in the late 1940s. Prior to his retirement he owned and operated R.W. Sellers House Movers for a number of years. He was a member of The Disabled Veterans Chapter 19 and a member of The American Legion. He was of the Baptist Faith. He served in the United States Army, during the World War II Invasion of( Normany) and five other countries as Technical Sargeant.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters Dorothy "Poogie" S. Scearce, Mary Jane S. Thompson, both of Danville, and Wilda Ann S. Clear of Dry Fork; five sons, Nathan A. Sellers of the residence, Tyler Vann Brown of Danville, Randall Dale Sellers, Lloyd Timothy Sellers, and Thomas Wilton Sellers, all of Ringgold; one sister Mary Louise S. Nichols of Danville; two brothers Lewis F. Sellers and Hubert C. Sellers, both of Ringgold; and ten grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 4 p.m. today at Wrenn Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Freddie Witcher
RIDGEWAY - Freddie Allen Witcher, 56, of Rt. 1, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998.
Born June 6, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of George Witcher and Mona Crews Witcher.
He was married
to Elizabeth D. Witcher, who survives.
He was a member of St. John Baptist Church and was employed by Mohawk.
In addition to the wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Ricky Witcher of Eden, N.C., Jonathan Wither of Greensboro, N.C.; two daughters, Deborah Clark of Greensboro, N.C. and Jean W. Hairston of Eden, N.C.; four brothers, Randolph Witcher, George Witcher Jr., John Witcher and Willow Witcher, all of Danville; five sisters, Ethel Jones, Lucinda Wilson, Rosa Madison, all of Danville, Barbara Allen and Ruth Watson, both of Maryland.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John Baptist Church in Axton with the Rev. Greene Moore officiating.
The family will receive friends 1:30-2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Virginia Callahan
GLEN ALLEN - Mrs. Virginia Ann Callahan, 50, of 9209 Brookwood Glen Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1998, at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
Born January 10, 1948, in Danville, she was the daughter of Sam Bigelow and Patsy Russell Bigelow.
Survivors include one daughter, Letoya Callahan of Richmond; one son, Anthony Callahan of Glen Allen; two sisters, Audrey Turnstall and Diane Watkins, both of Danville; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home in Danville 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. At other times the family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Audrey Turnstall, at 131 Kirkwood Drive.
Funeral services for will be conducted at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Interment
will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.
Juanita Gravely
Mrs. Juanita Griffith Gravely, 71, of 1135 Hobson Road, Axton died Wednesday at 10:10 p.m. at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
She was the daughter of Melvin Griffith and Virgie Jones Griffith.
She married
Thomas Motley Gravely who survives.
Most of her life was spent in the Axton Community. She retired from Dan River, Inc. She was a member of the Axton Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Thomas Steven Gravely and Donald G. Gravely, both of Axton; a daughter, Robin G. Guynn, of Providence, NC; one brother, Melvin Griffith, Jr. of Danville; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Swicegood Funeral Home 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, and at other times at the home of her son, Donald G. Gravely, 226 Holland Circle, Axton.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday by the Rev. Robert Cloniger and the Rev. Dr. Calvin Raines at the Swicegood Chapel. Interment
will be in Schoolfield cemetery.
