Clarence Redd
SOUTH BOSTON - Clarence Albert Redd, 70, of 806 Berry Hill Road, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at his home.
Born in Halifax County, on April 23, 1928, he was the son of Curtis Redd and Rebecca Kates Redd.
He was married
to Melissa Ingram Redd, who survives.
He was also a member of the Southside Baptist Church and a lifetime member of the South Boston Volunteer Fire Department.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Deborah Redd of Cluster Springs; two brothers, Thornton Redd and Charlie Redd, both of South Boston; two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Redd and Edmond Redd.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, and at other times at the residence.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Don Bryant and the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs conducting the service. Burial will take place in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
Johnnie Bennett
CHATHAM - Johnnie Henry Bennett Sr., 79, of 18833 U.S. Highway 29 North, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Bennett was born Nov. 15, 1919 in Pittsylvania County. He was the son of Bruce Coleman Bennett and Pauline Jacobs Bennett.
Mr. Bennett was a member of the Sheva Church of Christ and was also a WW II veteran, having served in Japan.
Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife, Louise Spencer Bennett of the residence; two sons, Johnnie H. Bennett Jr. and Aubrey M. Bennett, both of Chatham; a daughter, Carolyn B. Toney of Gretna; two granddaughters, Natalie Toney and Allison Toney, both of Gretna; and two nieces, Cornelia Jones and Omie T. Jones, both of Danville.
Mr. Bennett was predeceased by his parents, and seven sisters, Myrtle Adkins, Lillian Jones Beasley, Lilia Bennett, Ocie Bennett, Mary Etta Bennett, Gracie Bennett, and Maggie Bennett; and two brothers, Dewey Bennett and Coleman Bennett.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at the Scott Funeral Home Chapel with ministers Mike Stephenson and Frank Fuller officiating. Burial will take place at the Sheva Church of Christ cemetery in Pittsylvania County.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 26 at Scott Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence. Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Sudie Burgess
Sudie Myers Burgess, 90, went home to Heaven today, Dec. 24, 1998. She was predeceased by her husband, Berman B. Burgess and one grandson, Billy.
She was the daughter of Hubert Taylor Myers and Etta Frances Myers. She was the last member of her generation.
She is survived by two sons, Julian Burgess of Danville, VA and James Burgess of Keeling; one daughter, Inez Burgess of Danville; ten grandchildren, Gary, Alex, Bobby, Debbie, Pat, Mike, L.J., Wayne, Diane and Marie; thirteen great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was a charter member of Southall Baptist Church, now Westover Baptist Church.
Graveside rites will be held today, Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Doug Barber and the Rev. Tom Bailey officiating.
The family will be at the home of her son, James Burgess of 6004 Slatesville Road, Keeling, Va., (S.R. 701).
Moselle Cook
GRETNA - Hazel Moselle Cook, 89, of 145 Adkins Lane, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born August 26, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Jabey McHaney and Viola Westfall Hughey McHaney. She was married
to William Smith Anderson and Rorer James Cook, who both predeceased her.
She was a member of Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
Survivors include three daughters, Jewell Martin of Yorktown, Joyce Smith of Gretna, and Gloria Prindible of Cinnaminson, N.J.; two sons, Wayne Anderson of Gretna and Thornton Anderson of Williamsburg; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. Rudy Hearn officiating. Burial will follow in the Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Joyce Smith, 2801 Cotton Patch Road, Gretna.
Juanita Gravely
Mrs. Juanita Griffith Gravely, 71, of 1135 Hobson Road, Axton died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
She was the daughter of Melvin Griffith and Virgie Jones Griffith. She was born May 6, 1927, in Danville.
She married
Thomas Motley Gravely who survives.
Most of her life was spent in the Axton Community. She retired from Dan River, Inc. She was a member of the Axton Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Thomas Steven Gravely and Donald G. Gravely, both of Axton; a daughter, Robin G. Guynn, of Providence, NC; one brother, Melvin Griffith, Jr. of Danville; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Swicegood Funeral Home 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, and at other times at the home of her son, Donald G. Gravely, 226 Holland Circle, Axton.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday by the Rev. Dr. Calvin Rains at the Swicegood Chapel. Interment
will be in Schoolfield cemetery.
Louise Harris
Louise Boswell Harris, 86, of 128 Summit Road, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, due to declining health after a lengthy illness.
Born Jan. 9, 1912 in Burkeville, she was the daughter of John F. Boswell and Una Payseur Boswell.
She was married
to the Rev. George A. Harris, who predeceased her on April 1, 1983.
She lived most of her life in Burkeville and the Charlotte Court House area. In 1986, she moved to Danville, where, prior to her retirement, she worked as an associate professor of the campus school at Longwood College.
She acquired a master's in education and worked with WMU camps as a director for a number of years. She was also an active member of Woodberry Hills Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Love Circle and the True Seekers Sunday school class.
She was the last survivor of her immediate family.
She is survived by two sons, George F. Harris and the Rev. Lewis P. Harris Sr., both of Danville; a loving daughter-in-law, Peggy Harris of Danville; a sister-in-law, Micki Boswell of Crewe, VA; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Woodberry Hills Baptist Church with the Rev. Alden Hicks officiating. Interment
will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28 at a cemetery in Charlotte Courthouse.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

John Lundy
John H. Lundy, age 64, of 488 Westridge Dr., died at his residence Friday afternoon, December 25, 1998, after six months of declining health.
Born March 12, 1934, in Bland County, he was a son of the late William H. Lundy, and Arlie Roope Lundy, who survives.
He was first married
to Charlotte "Anne" Payne Lundy, who predeceased him on March 7, 1997. He later married
Sylvia H. "Pat" Lundy on July 6, 1997, who survives.
He served in the late 1950's in the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Army. He had spent most of his life in Danville and Pittsyvania County.
He was retired from Southland Insurance Company after 33 years of service, retiring as Regional Vice President of the North Carolina Region. He later became owner and operator of Lundy Insurance Agency.
He taught insurance classes at Rockingham Community College, and was past president of Danville Association of Life Underwriters. He was also a member of Gatewood Baptist Church and the St. John's United Methodist Church Fishermen's Club.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Teresa Lundy, and also a brother, James Lundy.
In addition to his mother of Bland County and his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Margaret Ruis-Thompson of Dry Fork; two sons, Alan L. Lundy of Akron, Ohio, and Tony L. Lundy of Danville; one stepdaughter, Terri C. Moore of Reidsville, N.C.; four brothers, Jim Lundy, Jack Lundy and George Lundy, all of Bland County, and Al Lundy of Forsyth, Ga.; two sisters, Jane Bales of Bland County and Betty Krollman of Hopewell; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John C. Gentry officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Era Mackie
ROXBORO - Era Vae Hendrix Mackie, 91, formerly of Granite Falls and Roxboro, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home in Danville.
She was the daughter of Walter Hamilton and Ella Wilson Hendrix.
She was a native of Caldwell County, and a retired school teacher. She was a member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church, member of the Roxboro Literary Club, member of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Hickory and a charter member of the DAR in Roxboro.
She is survived by two daughters, Nancy M. Cole of Roxboro and Frances M. Darkis of Danville; one sister, Meredith H. Hostettler of Granite Falls; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Catawba cemetery in Hickory with the Rev. Ed Morrison officiating.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Brooks & White Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of her daughter Frances M. Darkis, at 419 W. Main St., Danville.
Lacie Mullis
Lacie Vickers Mullis, 79, of 604 Worsham St., died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at her residence, after several years of declining health.
Born Feb. 11, 1919 in Taylorsville, and was the daughter of James R. Vickers and Della Honneycutt Mullis.
She was married
to Robert B. Mullis, who predeceased her on May 11, 1969.
Mrs. Mullis lived her life in the Danville area, where she was a member of Emmanuel Weslyn Church. She was also a homemaker.
Mrs. Mullis is survived by two daughters, Vickie Berkley and Ruby M. Scruggs, both of Danville; five sons, Donald Mullis and James Lee Mullis, both of Danville, David Kent Mullis and Barry Lynn Mullis, both of Alton, and Michael Wayne Mullis of Nelson, British Columbia; two sisters, Joe James and Cindy James, both of Taylorsville, N.C.; 8
grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by five sisters.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, with the Rev. Kendall Jenkins and the Rev. Richard Heffner officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Gilbert Carter
HALIFAX - Gilbert Thomas Carter, 93, of the Winns Creek community, died Dec. 25, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born June 4, 1905, in Halifax County, he was the son of Willie Green Carter and Mary Elizabeth Powell Carter.
He was married
to Edna Booker Carter.
He was a member of Winns Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of Halifax, survivors include three sons, Jerry Thomas Carter and Leo Booker Carter both of Church Road, William Lee Carter of Halifax; two daughters, Barbara Jean Helms of Billa Rica, Ga. and Cindy Carter Johnson of Chase City; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 3:30 p.m. today at Powell Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Welch officiating. Burial will be in Winns Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
