Katherine Turner
Katherine Meadors Turner, 80, of 262 Guilford St. died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at her residence.
Born Sept 8, 1918, in Danville, she was the daughter of George and Myrtle Hackworth Meadors.
She lived all of her life in Danville and was retied from Dan River Inc. She was a member of Grace-Design United Methodist Church.
She was the last surviving member of her generation.
She was married
to Fred L. Turner Sr., who predeceased her in 1996.
Survivors include one son, Fred L. Turner Jr. of Chatham; one daughter, Karen T. Wells of Danville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete at this time.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, 214 South Main St., Chatham.
Frank Cocke Sr.
Frank Curtis Cocke Sr., 71, of 478 Old Mount Cross Road, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 30, 1927, in Gretna, he was the son of Harry Curtis Cocke and Bertha Catherine Tanksley Cocke.
He was married
to Virginia Pruitt Cocke, who survives.
He had lived his entire life in the Danville area and prior to his retirement worked for Greyhound. He was a member of the Riveroak Church of God and had been active with the Full Gospel Men's Fellowship.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Frank Curtis Cocke Jr. of California and David Cocke of Norfolk; one daughter, Carol Ann Clifton of Danville; one step-daughter Joanne Cox of Danville; one step-son Larry Reid of Danville; one brother, Bobby Lee Cocke of Alexandria; three sisters, Jeanette White of Yanceyville, N.C., Catherine Wooten and Grace Kendrick, both of Danville, and Shirley Yeatts of Gretna; four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and at other times at the residence.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Tim Nuckles officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
Catherine Fletcher
PORTSMOUTH - Catherine Burley Fletcher, 80, of 4281 Hatton Point Lane, died Sunday morning, Dec. 27, 1998, of declining health at Lillans Loving Care Nursing Home.
Born Jan. 13, 1918, in Anderson, S.C., she was the daughter of James Burley and Ola McKinney Burley.
She was married
to Boyd C. Fletcher Jr., who predeceased her in 1987.
She was an office clerk at Sears Roebuck and Co. until her retirement. She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church for more than 50 years.
Survivors include one son, Boyd C. Fletcher III of Portsmouth; one daughter, Eleanor F. Hughey of Danville; three grandchildren, Catherine Klunder of Centerville, Boyd C. Fletcher IV of Chesapeake and Stephen A. Fletcher of Portsmouth; and three-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at her daughter's residence 210 Franklin Turnpike.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating.
Helen Harding
HALIFAX - Helen Flournoy Harding, 89, of 1100 Mountain Road, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at her home.
Born Dec. 17, 1909, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Basil D. Flournoy and Nancy Wilson Flournoy.
She was married
to Herman Merritt Harding.
She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.
Survivors include one son, Herman M. Harding Jr. of Halifax; one daughter, Barbara H. Hager of Williamsburg; one sister, Mary F. Harding of Mechanicsville; one brother, William G. Flournoy of Richmond; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Terry Hoye
Emmeline Terry Hoye, 70, of 2314 Franklin Turnpike, Apt. C-15, died Sunday morning, Dec. 27, 1998, at her residence.
Born May 3, 1928, in Smithfield, N.C., she was the daughter of Oliver Carson Cawley and Margaret Roberts Cawley.
She was married
to Donald Clark Hoye, who predeceased her Dec. 7, 1983.
She worked a number of years for Dan River Inc., in public relations, and then went to Washington, D.C. with congressmen W.C. "Dan" Daniels and, later, L.F. Payne as their legislative director, until she retired.
She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Coleman Hoye of Falls Church; two sons, Donald C. Hoye Jr. of Danville and Charles Comstock Hoye of Springfield; one sister, Margaret Christensen of Danville; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Northen officiating.
Carolyn Strader
Carolyn "Jean" Strader, 64, of 311 Holbrook St., died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug 5, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the Rev. Moore and Mattie Motley.
In addition to her mother, survivors include three daughters, Brenda Fitzgerald of Danville, Mattie Emmanuel of Washington D.C. and Narda Howard of Roanoke; four sons, Donald Strader, Herman Strader and Rodney Strader, all of Danville, and Bobby Strader of Ringgold; two sisters, Artellia Canada and Zelda Johnson both of Danville; one brother, William Strader of South Carolina, 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. today at Beavers Funeral Home Chapel.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Union Street Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Samuel Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Artellia Canada, 120 Chestnut Street.
Dewey Rakes
Dewey Edward Rakes, 80, of 806 Kemper Road, died Monday morning, Dec. 28, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born Oct. 15, 1918, in Patrick County, he was the son of Will Rakes and Judy Nolen Rakes.
He was married
to Gertrude Spencer Rakes, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he worked as quality control inspector for Dan River Inc. before retiring. He was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Judy Willis of Danville; two sisters, Lucy R. Booth and Mattie R. Powell, both of Danville; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by one son, Daniel W. Rakes Sr.

Elizabeth Adams
Elizabeth Adams, 65, of 212 Allison Drive, died Friday, Dec. 26, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 15, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Walker Thornton and Eurkinlish Tarpley Thornton.
She was married
to Rufus Orlando Adams, who predeceased her.
She graduated from Southside High School in 1952. She moved to New York and attended Monroe Business School and Bronx Community College. While living in New York, she was employed by Mt. Sinai Hospital as a unit secretary. She also worked for Hertz Corporation as a bookkeeping clerk. After moving back to Danville in 1974, she worked for Memorial Hospital as a unit secretary. She was a member of Evangelical Holiness Church in Axton. She has served as secretary, Sunday school teacher, missionary and president of the Flower Club. She was a care giver for many years before retirement.
Survivors include two daughters Cynthia Williams of Seaside, Calif. and Patricia Arlene Wilson of New York; one son Steve Elliot Adams of New York; one sister Della Mary Thornton of Danville; two brothers Paul Thornton of Long Island, N.Y., and Richard Lee Thornton of Danville; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Marvin Slade officiating. A viewing will be held from 12-1 p.m. at the chapel. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Howard Berger
On Christmas Eve 1998, God chose to call one of his devoted children, Howard Martin Berger, 59, home to rest. Born July 22, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Howard A. and Ozzie Ruby Berger. Howard departed this life on Thursday evening at St. John of God Retirement and Care Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
Howard received his education from the Pittsylvania County school system, graduating from the former Northside High School "Class of 1957," in Gretna. He was a devoted and faithful supporter of the Northside Alumni Reunion Association, where he will be remembered as "Hatch," a former football player.
At an early age, he joined the Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Gretna, Va. After moving to California, he joined the Ascension Lutheran Church, where he served many years on the Board of Trustees. He was a faithful member until his death.
He was employed with Hughes Aircraft for 38 years prior to his recent retirement. He worked in transportation as a heavy duty truck driver.
He was united in holy matrimony on Aug. 25, 1961, to the former Lucille Fuller. To this union were born two children.
Those left to mourn his memory include, in addition to his wife of Los Angeles, Calif. one daughter Vicky Berger; one son, Howard Martin Berger Jr. both of Los Angeles,; four sisters and husbands, Letha B. James, Ruby and James Wilson of Gretna, Tiny and James McLaughlin of Chatham, Marion and Allen Smith Jr. of Los Angeles; one foster brother Earl O. Martin Sr.; three grandchildren, Nicole Battieste, Derrick Rigsby and Devin Rigsby, all of Los Angeles; his best friend Aaron Martin of Gretna,; one uncle Martin Webb of Gretna; one devoted cousin Cora Clark of Gretna, along with a host of nieces, nephews and other devoted relatives and friends.
A funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Ascension Lutheran Church, 5820 West Boulevard, Los Angeles.

Myrtle Crenshaw
HALIFAX - Myrtle Kent Crenshaw, 76, of 2123 Oak Level Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at her home.
Born July 19, 1922, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Walter Warren Crenshaw and Linda Ferrell Crenshaw.
She was a member of Oak Level Presbyterian Church and proprietor of Crenshaw's store.
Survivors include one nephew H. Hatcher Crenshaw, Jr. of Oak Level.
A funeral will be held Thursday at Oak Level Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bob Jackson officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Martha Edwards
Martha Ophelia Edwards, 94, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 21, 1904, in Abbeville, Ga., she was the daughter of Christopher Eugene Chambless and Annie Couse Chambless.
She was married
to Benjamim Felton Edwards who predeceased her in 1961.
She was a member of First Evangelical Methodist Church in Macon, Ga.
Survivors include two sons, Roger L. Sutton of Conyers, Ga., and Ben Sutton of Ringgold; three sisters Pauline Stone of Salina, Kan., Dorothy Greene of Macon and Doris Cabbler of Temple Hills, Md.; one brother William Chambless of Macon; one granddaughter Kim Sutton McVay of Ringgold; and one grandson Stephen Sutton of Ringgold.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Floyd B'Hymer officiating.
