Ronald G. Ballance
CHESAPEAKE -- Ronald G. Ballance, 54, born June 8, 1947, entered into eternal rest on Jan. 23, 2002.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served his country during the Vietnam War. He was a valued employee of Foamex and a VFW Post 1211 member.
Survivors include a wife, Carole Ballance; four children, Joshua Ballance, Lani Dornisch, John Dornisch and Karen Archbell; four grandchildren, Chandler, Victoria, Sam and James Archbell; two sisters, Dianne Lawlis and Linda Price; three brothers, P.L. Dozier, Emmitt Ballance Jr. and his twin, Donald Ballance; and several nieces and nephews.

Timothy C. Daniels
CHESAPEAKE -- Timothy Charles "Tim" Daniels, 38, passed away Jan. 23, 2002, in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. He was a native of Portsmouth and a son of Catherine Louise Daniels of Virginia Beach and the late Mathew Henry Daniels and the loving husband of Martha Elizabeth Daniels.
Tim was a superintendent with Caroline Fire Control.
In addition to his mother and devoted wife, Martha, he is survived by his daughter, Katherine Elizabeth Daniels of the home; four brothers, Matthew Henry "Mat" Daniels of Norfolk, John Stephen Daniels Sr. and Richard Allen "Rick" Daniels, both of Virginia Beach, and William Robert "Bill" Daniels of Hampton; a sister, Sandra Daniels Norman of Virginia Beach; six nieces and two nephews.
The family will receive friends in Kellum Funeral Home Rosewood Chapel, 601 N. Witchduck Road, today from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral will be held in the funeral home Saturday at 1 p.m. by Dr. Greg DeMarco. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. Herley J. Dorman
CHESAPEAKE -- On Jan. 21, 2002, Herley James Dorman, of the 1300 block of Wingfield Ave., departed this world to his eternal rest, at Chesapeake General Hospital. He was born Nov. 19, 1927 in Chesapeake, and was the son of the late William Henry Dorman and Annie Woodard Dorman.
He was predeceased by a beloved son, Dan Dorman. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Mrs. Shirley Haynes Dorman, and seven children, Dobbrey Dorman of Rochester, N.Y., Deborah Dangerfield of Austintown, Ohio, Brenda Hines of Virginia Beach, Charlene Dorman, Kathryn Atkinson, Dwayne Dorman, and Dana Dorman, all of Chesapeake; a sister, Roline Johnson; five grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Minister Herley Dorman was a faithful member of Faith Mission Healing Temple for many years. He retired from the Chesapeake Public Works Department after 31 years of service.
Homegoing services will be held at Refuge COGIC, 2130 Stalham Road, Chesapeake, by Elder John Reid, Saturday at noon with an interment following at Roosevelt Memorial Cemetery. Fitchett Funeral Home, Chesapeake, is handling arrangements.
Preston D. Turpin
CHESAPEAKE -- Preston D. Turpin, 79, of the 4000 block of Deborah Court, died Jan. 23, 2002.
Mr. Turpin, a native of Richmond, Va., retired as a sales executive from Allied Van Lines of Houston, Texas. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II in the South Pacific, a member of St. Therese's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus No. 418 and 4th Degree Assembly.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Bell Turpin; a daughter, Suzanne Turpin Tomlinson and husband Cary of Urbandale, Iowa; two sons, Michael Turpin and wife Vinsea of Pittsburgh, Pa., Patrick Turpin and wife Sherry of Portsmouth; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Therese's Catholic Church by the Rev. Robert L. Cummins. Jones Floral Designs in Chesapeake and a cashier at Herman Mart No. 1 in Virginia Beach. Mrs. West lived in Chesapeake for 12 years and was formerly of Catbalogan-Samar, Philippines.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Preston West III; loving children, Leslie M., Desiree S. and Preston West IV all of Chesapeake; dear sisters, Vivian and Tessie Perante of Ilo Ilo City, Philippines; cherished brothers, Nelson, Franko, Joseph, Nino and Paulo Perante all of Ilo Ilo City.

Diamant, Kevin D. Diamant, Jeffrey A. Foreman, Julie R. Scaff and Leah M. Diamant; cherished great-grandmother of Hannah and Grant M. Diamant and Megan J. Scaff.

NORFOLK -- Gracie M. Pigott, 87, died Jan. 23, 2002, in Virginia Beach.
Born in Northampton County, N.C., she was a homemaker and the widow of retired U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Howard C. Pigott Sr. Mrs. Pigott was a member of Temple Baptist Church of Norfolk.
Survivors include two sons, Howard C. Pigott Jr. and wife Elaine of Copiague, N.Y., and Shannon D. Pigott and wife Linda of Virginia Beach; two sisters; three grandchildren, Karin Losh, Melissa Meinhoffer and John Pigott, all of New York; and four grandchildren.

S. Gordon French
PORTSMOUTH -- S. Gordon French, 77, of the 3200 block of Riveredge Drive, departed on his final patrol on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002. He received his final orders while a patient at Portsmouth Naval Hospital.
Mr. French, a native of Richmond, joined the Navy during World War II and first served at Fleet Air Wing II in Guantanamo, Cuba. He transferred to the Submarine Service and served on board the USS Rasher, USS Sea Poacher, USS Sterlet, USS Runner, USS Diodon, USS Sam Houston, USS Orion, and Submarine Division 242.
Mr. French was an instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1959 to 1961, teaching undersea warfare. He was senior instructor at the U.S. Naval Polaris Guided Missile School, Dam Neck, Va., from 1962 to 1966, where he received a commendation from the United Kingdom for directly contributing to the British Polaris Program.
He retired from the Navy in 1966 as chief petty officer and from 1966 to 1969 he worked as a field engineer for Vitro Corporation, Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co.
In 1969, he became a real estate broker and an owner of Brown, French and Benbow. In 1972 he merged his company with Higgins Real Estate Co. of Virginia Beach.
In 1974, Mr. French went to work for Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Combat Systems, Undersea Warfare Division and retired after five years due to disability.
The single, most profound influence on Gordon's life was Masonry. He became a Mason in 1959 and became a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason in 1969. He was a member of America-Fellowship Lodge 148. He became a Shriner in Khedive Temple in 1969. He was a member of the Legion of Honor Unit of Khedive Temple. He was a member and past president of Portsmouth Shrine Club, and member of Suffolk Shrine Club and past member of Chesapeake Shrine Club.
Mr. French managed a Little League Baseball team for four years. He was a member of Monumental United Methodist Church and Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 9382 and a member of Shark Two Chapter of U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II.
Mr. French was a devoted husband and loving father and he cared deeply for his family, his home and his many friends.
Mr. French is survived by his loving wife Lolita Grimsley French; three sons, Gordon Lee French, Brian Edward French and daughter-in-law Dorothy M. French, and Lt. Col. Stephen Grimsley Trent, USA retired, and daughter-in-law Gerri A. Trent; and three grandchildren, Christopher Gordon French, Rebecca A. Trent and Adam G. Trent.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. at Monumental United Methodist Church, Portsmouth, Sunday by Dr. Michael H. Browder. Masonic rites will be held at the graveside. The family will receive friends at Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery in Portsmouth.

PORTSMOUTH -- John Henry "Poppa Son" Hardeman, 74, of the 200 block of Cavalier Blvd., died Jan. 19, 2002, at Norfolk Healthcare. He retired from the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by his wife, Gerthell Hardeman; five daughters; five sons; two sisters; a brother; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including special friends, James Flythe and Michael Piersaw.

PORTSMOUTH -- Beulah M. Whitaker White, 77, of the 5800 block of Campbell St., passed peacefully into eternal life Jan. 21, 2002 in her home. She was a native of Scotland Neck, N.C., and the daughter of the late Robert and Hattie Whitaker.
Mrs. White was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Temple Church. She was predeceased by a son, Albert M. White, a brother, Robert Whitaker Jr., two sisters, Cara Hillard and Hattie Baker, and a grandson, Brandon T. White.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Lucille H. Carter, 97 1/2 , died Jan. 21, 2002. She was a native of Bedford, Va., but lived in Tidewater for more than 60 years. She was the daughter of Lewis and Dora Huddleston and widow of Percy Carter. She was also predeceased by a sister, Maree Saunders.
Cille leaves behind four generations of loved ones that will miss her which include her daughter, Patricia C. Payne of Summerville, S.C.; grandchildren, Susan and Ricky West of Virginia Beach; great-grandchildren, Kora and Jeremy Johnson, Geoff and Dawn West; and three great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves two sisters, Mabel Saunders and Hilda McManaway of Bedford, Va., and Jack Huddleston of Vinton, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Luz Pesquera O'Neill, formerly of Edgewood Ave. in Chesapeake, passed away Jan. 22, 2002. She was born in Puerto Rico to the late Domingo and Clara Estaban Pesquera and was the wife of 63 years of the late Enrique O'Neill. Mrs. O'Neill had retired as a secretary for the Department of Defense with 30 years of devoted service to her country.
She is survived by a son, Henry O'Neill and his wife, Ann; a granddaughter, Lauren O'Neill; and a sister, Clara Lamela, all of Virginia Beach.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Merle H. Tom, 66, of the 3200 block of Shore Drive, died Jan. 23, 2002, in his residence.
A native of Chicago, Ill., he retired as an attorney with Prudential Insurance Co. Mr. Tom was a World Championship Bridge player, a member of the New York Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He was a graduate of Yale University and earned his J.D. at the University of Pennsylvania.

Beatrice H. Pennington
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Beatrice Hayes Pennington, 81, of the 700 block of Rosaer Circle, went to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer and Alzheimer's Disease. She worked for the U.S. government for more than 35 years and at her retirement she was the Public Works Officer at the Naval Amphibious Base. Born in Kinston, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Leta Johnson Hayes and Farley William Hayes.
Mrs. Pennington was a member for more than 40 years of Epworth United Methodist Church in Norfolk, and over those years she taught the Intermediate Sunday School and the Women's Adult Bible Class. While at Epworth she was also president of the United Methodist Women and held district offices. In 1990, she and her husband, transferred to St. Andrew's United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach where she was a former president of the Church Women United. She was also a member of the Westminster Chapter No. 99, Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include her beloved husband, Walter S. Pennington Jr.; a daughter, Leta Rosemary Pennington of Kissimmee, Fla.; a son, Farley William Pennington of New York City; a sister, Marjorie Hayes Powers and husband, Norman of Chesapeake; and several nieces and nephews.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Barbara Allene Womeldorf, 64, passed away Jan. 23, 2002, in a local hospital. She was a member of the Norfolk Chapter No. 157 Women of the Moose. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Charlie and Vonda Sturgill and brothers, Jimmy and Jerry Sturgill.

COURTLAND -- Hattie Simmons Bond, 92, retired Deputy Commissioner of Revenue of Southampton County, died Jan. 23, 2002. Born in Southampton County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Augustus and Missie Frances Spain Simmons and the widow of Edward C. Bond. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Courtland United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer for many years.

Mayme W. Davenport
CRESWELL -- Mayme Woodley Davenport, 89, of Cherry Road, died Jan. 23, 2002, at her residence following a short illness.
Born March 26, 1913, in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Thomas Woodley and Della Haire Woodley. Mrs. Davenport was a former teacher and former chairperson of the Washington County Board of Commissioners. She leaves a legacy of achievements for her service to the church and community and in government at the county and state levels.
Her family includes her husband of 69 years, Jennings M. Davenport Sr. of Creswell; son, Jennings M. Davenport Jr. and wife Anetta of Swansboro, N.C.; daughters, Jean D. Alexander and husband Alvah Wilbert Jr. of Creswell, Barbara D. Day and husband Douglas of Chapel Hill, N.C.; grandchildren, Al Alexander III and wife Wendy, Brad Alexander and wife Sharon, Susan Day, Jennings Davenport III and Matthew Davenport; great-grandchildren, Alex IV and Ali Alexander.
A funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Philippi Church of Christ in Creswell. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Dave Watts, minister of Philippi Church and the Rev. Tom Tarkenton, minister, Mount Hermon United Methodist Church will officiate. Family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the church and other times from their residence. RICH SQUARE -- Elizabeth Forbes Futrell, 89, died Jan. 23, 2002. A native of Hertford County, she graduated from Chowan College and later received a master's degree from East Carolina University. She was a dedicated teacher and counselor in the Northampton and Roanoke Rapids school systems.
Mrs. Futrell was preceded in death by her husband, William Claude Futrell and four brothers, Luther, Jamie, Ray and Montgomery. She is survived by her daughters, Camilla F. Wise and husband, Charles of Chesapeake, and Bettye F. Hamill and husband, Jerry of Enfield, N.C.; brother, Edwin T. Forbes and wife, Polly, of Murfreesboro, N.C.; four grandchildren, Billy Sawyer of Philadelphia, Pa., Gina H. Donahoo and husband, John of Jacksonville, Fla., Chris Sawyer of Chesapeake, Claudia L. Hamill of Wilson, N.C.; and a great-granddaughter, Libby Donahoo of Jacksonville, Fla.
The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Forbes, 504 Lakeview Drive, Murfreesboro, N.C. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Wint Hale Saturday at 4 p.m. at Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Rich Square. Geraldine G. Tompkins
EURE -- Geraldine G. Tompkins, 78, formerly of Suffolk and more recently of Waterbury, Conn., died Jan. 23, 2002, in Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin.
Mrs. Tompkins was born in Port Chester, N.Y., and was the daughter of the late Clifton H. and Catherine Michelle Geilhard. A 1970 graduate of Louise Obici School of Practical Nursing, she was an LPN and had retired from the state of Connecticut. Most of her life was spent in the New York and Connecticut areas, but for the last several months she had lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Eure.
Preceded in death by her husband, George M. Tompkins Jr., she is survived by three daughters, Susanne T. Taylor and husband William E. of Eure, Geraldine Palmer and husband Peter of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Mary Kathryn Lofquist and husband Jeff of Watertown, Minn.; two sons, George M. Tompkins III and wife Rexine of Prospect, Conn., and Tyrone C. Tompkins and wife Beatrice of Waterbury, Conn.; two sisters, Ruth G. O'Brien of Green Valley, Ariz., and Catherine Mead of Port Chester, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Cool Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Wayne Gardner. Following services, Mrs. Tompkins will be sent to the William H. Graham Funeral Home in Rye, N.Y., for a visitation Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. Services there will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Mercy Church in Port Chester with burial following in Greenwood Union Cemetery.
Friends may join the family at the home of Susanne and William Taylor, 046 US Hwy 13, Eure, or in the social hall of Cool Spring Church on Saturday following services.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions in her memory be made to the Cool Spring Baptist Church, Eure, NC 27935 or the Gates County Rescue Squad, Gatesville, NC 27938.
Charles J. Hogg
GLOUCESTER -- Charles James Hogg, 88, died Jan. 23, 2002, in Sanders Nursing Home. He was a native of York County and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He retired in 1972 from Norfolk Iron and Wire Co. as a salesman and estimator after 10 years of service.
He was an avid fisherman and became a member of Bellamy United Methodist Church when he moved to Gloucester in 1986 from York County. He was a former member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church where he served on the official board for 20 years and as Lay Leader. He served seven years on the York County Planning Commission, a member and past Master of the Yorktown Masonic Lodge No. 205, AF&AM, York Chapter of the Eastern Star and had worked with Bethel Jobs Daughters.
He was predeceased by his father, Charles Jackson Hogg, his mother and stepfather, Gertrude Ironmonger and Judge William F. Hogg and also a sister, Sarah Hoff Jenkins.
He met his bride, Ruth C. Hogg, on a hospital ship and they were married Aug. 14, 1945.
Besides his wife, he is also survived by his daughters and their husbands, Janie Gatlin and husband Kenneth of Charlotte, N.C., Mary Lou Bowen and husband Kelly of Smithfield and Kathy Dumas and husband Dr. Harold Dumas of White Marsh, Va.; a sister, Mildred Lee Abernathy of Hampton; seven grandchildren, Lisa Blow, Betsy Jenkins, Carrie Gatlin, Brent Gatlin, Tracy Lundberg, Katie Bowen and Sarah Dumas; and three great-grandsons, Ryan, Hayden and Connor Blow.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Bellamy United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robert Justis. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home.

Langhorne D. Francis
RICHMOND -- Langhorne Drew Francis, 58, a resident of Henrico County, Va., and formerly of Wakefield, Va., died Jan. 22, 2002, at Henrico Doctor's Hospital, Parham.
He worked as a deputy clerk in the clerk's office in the Circuit Court of Henrico County, Va., for 19 years. Born May 5, 1943, he was the son of the late Joseph Langhorne Francis and Julia Emily Drew Francis. He was also predeceased by his aunt, Ann Clinton Drew.
Mr. Francis is survived by his cousins, Paige Barnes of Jarratt, Mary Anne Kellogg of Newport News, Louise England of Richmond, Ann Applewhite of Richmond, and a host of other cousins; dear friend Gloria Johnson and family, and numerous other friends.
Funeral services will be held at Purviance Funeral Home Chapel, Wakefield, at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Peter Vaughn, pastor of Welborne United Methodist Church, Richmond, officiating. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m., prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

ROANOKE -- David A. Frazier, 39, died Jan. 24, 2002. He had formerly lived in Virginia Beach and Louisa County, Va.
He is survived by his parents, Dr. Arthur and Hazel Frazier of Roanoke; his sister, Elizabeth Frazier of Arlington, Va.; his daughter, Candice Nicole Frazier of Roanoke; and a devoted friend, Terri.

Lawrence M. Hughes
RIDGELEY, W.Va. -- Lawrence M. "Curly" Hughes, 87, a longtime resident of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, Md.
Born Jan. 7, 1914 in Luke, Md., he was the son of the late Joseph L. and Laura M. (Elkins) Hughes. He was also preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Hughes Jr.
Mr. Hughes was a retired U.S. Navy chief petty officer after 30 years of service, and a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Church of the Annunciation, Fort Ashby, the Cumberland Knights of Columbus 586, Veterans of Foreign Wars 6667, Fort Ashby, and the Raplier Class of 1933, LaSalle High School. He was the All Navy Featherweight Boxing Champ in 1936, and a contender in the U.S. Olympic Boxing Team from 1935-1936. He was a charter member of the Has-Beens Club.
Surviving are his devoted companion, Pauline Logsdon Ridgeley; a son, Joseph A. Hughes and wife, Robin Ridgeley; four daughters, Diane Hughes and husband, Chuck of Charlottesville, Va., Billie Eileen Locke and husband, Ed, of Virginia Beach, Kathleen Meyer and husband, Rick, of New Bern, N.C., and Alexis Cahoon of Virginia Beach; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Friends were received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, Md., on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian wake service was held Monday at the funeral home at 3:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Annunciation, Fort Ashby, with Father James Chetock as celebrant. Interment was in Fort Ashby Cemetery. Military honors were accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
