Vernelle G. Bristow
CHESAPEAKE -- Vernelle Grizzard Bristow, 84, died Jan. 21, 2002.
She was born in Emporia, Va., Sept. 24, 1917. She graduated from Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg, in 1939 with a B.S. degree in economics. She worked all four years there for Dr. Pierce in the science department. Upon graduation, she taught in high schools in Danville and Courtland. Later, she worked several years in the Bristow family automotive business as an accountant in Waverly and Norfolk. Vernelle returned to teaching in Norfolk schools during the late 1950s and continued until she retired in the early 1980s. Throughout her life, Vernelle was active in the Baptist church as well as in several church-related organizations.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jesse Willard Bristow; parents, Vernon Kinard and Rosa Christine Saunders Grizzard; son-in-law, Clifton Talmadge White Jr.; daughter-in-law, Lynn Marie Varns Bristow; and sisters, Mattie Rose Grizzard Harrell and Christine Grizzard Mays.
Vernelle is survived by her children, Phyllis Lynne Bristow White of Chesapeake and Wayne Douglass Bristow of Highland Springs; granddaughters, Meredith Renee and Stacy Marie Bristow of Highland Springs; brothers, Charles Vernon, Sailor Augusta and Nolan Saunders Grizzard of Emporia; sisters, Kerzena Lane Grizzard Matthews of Emporia and Edris-Lovie Grizzard Lucas of Glen Allen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in Atlantic Shores Baptist Church by the Rev. Jim Wolfcale. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. Friends may join the family at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today. Verna R. Hand
CHESAPEAKE -- Verna Rollins Hand, 74, of the 200 block of Coventry Close, passed away Jan. 19, 2002.
Born in Damascus, Va., to the late John and Lula Mae Hamm Rollins, she was the wife of the late Kyle Jessie Hand. Mrs. Hand was a member of Raleigh Heights Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Donald E. Hand and Jimmy A. Hand, both of Chesapeake; seven grandchildren, Stacey, Kevin, Jason, Kandace, Lori, Carl and Molly; five great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Alma Anderson, Libby Rollins, Sarah Rollins and Kathlene Rollins.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, Chesapeake. The Rev. Henry Napier will be officiating with the burial to follow in Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk.

CHESAPEAKE -- Shirley C. Liverman, 68, of the 1300 block of Elder Avenue died Jan. 18, 2002.
She is survived by her husband, Ed Liverman of Chesapeake; son, Lem Liverman of Chesapeake; daughter, Patricia Liverman of Northfield, Minn.; and four grandchildren.

Presley M. Adamson Jr.
NORFOLK -- Retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Presley M. "Sam" Adamson Jr., 86, died Jan. 20, 2002 at his residence.
He was born in Caldwell County, Princeton, Ky., on July 16, 1915, and was the widower of Jessie Virginia Adamson. He retired from the Navy after 33 years of service. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church; Atlantic Masonic Lodge No. 2 AF & AM; Scottish Rite Bodies; York Rite; Commander Sojourners; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Fleet Reserve Association; and American Legion.
Survivors include five children, Robert LeDoyen, Presley Maxwell Adamson III, Becky Walker, Ida Patykula and Jeff Adamson; a sister, Catherine Bulmer; a brother, Warner Adamson; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christ United Methodist Church, with Masonic rites, by the Rev. Bruce Carper. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.

Honoria A. Frias
NORFOLK -- Honoria A. Frias, 73, slipped quietly and peacefully into eternal rest on Jan. 20, 2002 at home surrounded by family and friends.
She was born in San Juan, San Carlos City, Pangasinan, Philippines, moved and settled with her loving husband in Norfolk in 1954. She was the first to open a Filipino-Oriental grocery store in the region, was a founding member of the Filipino Women's Club of Tidewater, a member of the Pangasinan Association of Virginia, an active parishioner and choir member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and a faithful volunteer of Stella Maris.
Mrs. Frias is survived by her husband of 51 years, Francisco; five sons, Max and wife Angie, Frank, Tony, Jessie and wife Themis, and Douglas; three daughters, Jane Knerr and husband Richard, Carmelita McCrickard and husband Dean, Virginia Dotterer and husband Larry; three sisters; and eight grandchildren.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Saturday with Msgr. Santiago Frias and Father Wayne Ball officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

Maude E. Fields
NORFOLK -- A busy life came to a close on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, when Mrs. Maude Fields, 84, of the 1000 block of E. Berkley Ave., was called to her heavenly home. She was born on May 30, 1917, in Hopewell, Va. She was the daughter of the late Waverly and Della Ellis.
Maude was married to the late Robert Fields Sr. To this union was born one son, Robert Fields Jr.
Mrs. Fields was a loyal member of St. Mark United Church of Christ where she served faithfully on the No. 2 Usher Board for many years. She was also a member of the Building Committee. She loved her church and the work of the ministry.
She leaves to cherish her memories her loving and devoted son, Robert Fields Jr.; daughter-in-law, Sandra Hall Fields; a grandson, Robert Fields III; four brothers-in-law, Samuel Fields and Willie Fields of Norfolk, John Fields of Bronx, N.Y., and James Fields of Mount Vernon, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Baby Lue Fields of Norfolk and Naomi Fields of Bronx; and a host of relatives and friends.
Family and friends were important to Maude. She was a kind and giving person who shared unbegrudgingly to assist others in their time of need. Her big smile and life-loving spirit will continue to be loved and greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in New St. Mark United Holy Church of Christ, Berkley, with the Rev. Thomas Hart officiating. Interment will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Park. Evelyn V. Kuethe
NORFOLK -- Evelyn Vogel Kuethe, 70, entered into eternal rest on Jan. 19, 2002. A native of Bessemer, Mich., she has been a Norfolk resident for 48 years, a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk, worked for the Norfolk Public School System, and she retired from the Naval Supply Center Comptroller Department in 1997 after 20 years. She is predeceased by first husband, Billie B. Vogel and brother Lee Doreau of Colorado.
Survivors include husband of 18 years, Charles Kuethe; son Michael Vogel and wife Karen of Virginia Beach; son Patrick Vogel of Norfolk; daughter Vicki Myers and husband Keith of Norfolk; stepdaughter, Janet and husband Winston Johnston of Niceville, Fla.; stepdaughter, Linda Kuethe and stepson Robert Kuethe of Virginia Beach; beloved grandchildren, Christopher and Amy Vogel, Tyler Kingsbury-Vogel, Daniel, Amber and Brian Myers, Casey Johnston, Ray Brickhouse Jr. and Skylar Kuethe; and many "special" cousins and friends throughout the USA.

NORFOLK -- Edith Yvonne Saunders went to be with the Lord Jan. 19, 2002, after a long bout with cancer. She was a lifelong resident of the California Bay area and was the widow of Theodore Joseph Bulatewicz.
Yvonne had many years in show business and was an interior decorator and is survived by a sister, Barbara Jacobson-Laber and her husband, George E. Laber of Norfolk; a sister-in-law, Nell Saunders of Norfolk; two nieces, two nephews and several cousins.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Serenity in Rosewood Memorial Park by the Rev. Joe Newman. Burial will be in the Masonic Garden. PORTSMOUTH -- Mary Lou Oldfield, 83, of the 4500 block of West Norfolk Road, died Jan. 21, 2002 in a Portsmouth hospital.
A native of Corinth, Miss., she had retired from General Electric.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Duncan Oldfield of Portsmouth; three sons, George A. Oldfield Jr. of Maryland, James A. Oldfield and Paul R. Oldfield, both of Portsmouth; a brother, Brice Duncan of Mississippi; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ignacia L. Baria
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Ignacia Lopez Baria entered eternal rest on Jan. 19, 2002 at the age of 83. She was born in Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines on Dec. 17, 1918.
Mrs. Baria now joins her husband Elias Baria and her only son Ador Baria, who died in 1988.
She is survived by her three daughters, Dr. Nieva Castillo and husband Dr. Rogelio Castillo of Buffalo, N.Y., Ella Lezondra and husband Eduardo of Chicago, and her youngest daughter, Eden Boulter and husband Robert from Virginia Beach. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, Varoon Lezondra and wife Mary Lou, Lisa Castillo Reyes and husband Samuel, Emil Lezondra and wife Julie, Edward Lezondra, Kristina Castillo, Bobby Boulter, Beverly Jane Lezondra and Justin Boulter, all in the United States, Ellen Baria and Gigi Eugenio of the Philippines, Josephine Marin and Mariel, Joy, Rayda and Jun Baria of Japan and Clara Chavez of U.K.; four great-grandchildren in the United States, Logan Lezondra, Ana and Carlos Reyes and Alexa Lezondra; and 11 great-grandchildren in the Philippines. Mrs. Baria leaves behind her sisters, Flordeliza Domingo of California, Nieves Galutera of Florida, Violeta Gonzalvo, Zenaida Lopez of the Philippines and Trinidad Lopez of New York. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Teopisto Lopez and Lope Lopez.
Mrs. Baria lived with daughter Eden for most of her years in the United States. She was an active member of the UIAT and Fil-Am Bayanihan Senior Citizen Group. She was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Mark.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Catholic Church of St. Mark with Fr. Leo Manalo officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today and Wednesday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, with a wake service at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Eleanor K. Bowman
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Eleanor Sabina King Bowman, 83, of the 1100 block of Gaymont Court, died Jan. 19, 2002, in Virginia Beach.
She was born in Williamsport, Pa., and was a lifelong member of First Christian Church in Beckley, W.Va. She was very active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and also formerly involved with the Girl Scouts, The Old Guard at William and Mary and Chi Omega Sorority.
Survivors include her husband, Ernest V. Bowman; a daughter, Dr. Bonnie Lila Bowman Thurston of Wheeling, W.Va.; a son, A.V. Bowman of Virginia Beach; and two grandchildren, Michael Warner Bowman and Samuel Ernest Bowman. She was predeceased by two brothers, James and Markley King.
Services and burial will be private. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
Vandella Braye
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Vandella Braye, known as Miss Snow Ball, of the 400 block of North Oceana Blvd., died Jan. 19, 2002, in Chesapeake General Hospital.
Born in Princess Anne County, she was the widow of Ollie Braye Sr. and a member of First Lynnhaven Baptist Church, Virginia Beach.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Woodhouse of Virginia Beach and Dorothy Coleman of Maryland; foster daughter, Margie Holly of Virginia Beach; two sons, Ollie Braye Jr. of Virginia Beach, Willie L. Braye of Chesapeake; four sisters, Vergie Butts of New York, Annie Niles, Georgia Sills and Pearl Uzzle, all of Virginia Beach; a brother, Harrison Dozier of Virginia Beach; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by a son, Jacob Braye.

Virginia Houck Bush
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Houck Bush, 91, passed away on Jan. 18, 2002, at Sentara Nursing Home in Virginia Beach. Virginia was born in Shelbina, Mo., on Jan. 27, 1910. She graduated from the North-East Teachers College, also known as Truman State University. On June 16, 1945, Virginia married Roy Bush who was with the 15th Army-Air Force unit. During World War II, Virginia worked at the ammunition plant in South St. Louis. Virginia was a dedicated teacher who taught with the Wayne Township School System in Dayton, Ohio. After teaching a while there she taught at Saint Mary's Parish in St. Louis. After being predeceased by her husband, Roy, she moved to Virginia Beach and had resided in Virginia until her time of death. Virginia was a very active member in the Catholic Church. She was a member of Church of the Ascension Catholic Church, Virginia Beach. Virginia is predeceased by her two sisters, Eula C. Houck and Grace Margraf; and her three brothers, Lee Houck, Sonny Houck and Paul T. Houck.
Virginia is survived by her sons, Carl Bush of Norman, Okla., and Charles L. Bush of Virginia Beach; four nephews, Dr. Johnny Margraf, Jerry Houck, Dr. Gordon Bussard and John Houck; and her three nieces, Caroline Walters, Ginney Ritters and Patsy Bussard.
The family would like to take this time to thank Luchia Wright and Sandy Harrison for 10 years of service in taking care and providing live and care to our mother. Both of these woman will always be part of our family. Thanks a lot. Virginia will be surely be missed by everyone who she has touched over the years.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- John "Jack" Carl Dineen, 75, of the 500 block of Lakewood Circle, died Jan. 15, 2002, in a local hospital.
Jack was born Jan. 9, 1927, in New York to the late Thomas Dineen and the late Ida Bopp Dineen. He was the widower of Eleanor Fawn Dale Dineen. Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in Vietnam and was a member of the VFW Post 392.
He is survived by three sons, Michael A. Dineen, Patrick S. Dineen, and Gavin J. Dineen and wife Holly, all of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Kathleen F. Hendrix and husband Mitchell of Lowgap, N.C., and Kelly A. Finkelstein and husband Bruce of Virginia Beach; a brother, Tom Dineen of California; a sister, Margaret Finnerty of Texas; 10 grandchildren, April, Donovan, Mitchell Jr., Joshua, Joseph, Nicole, Brandee, Andrew, Nicholas and Gavin Jr.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Christopher Stephen Hall, 36, of the 600 block of Johnson St., went peacefully to be with the Lord on Jan. 20, 2002, at his residence.
He was born in Arlington, Va., and was a former manager at Taco Bell. He was a member of Princess Anne Plaza Baptist Church, where he was actively involved with the youth group. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah L. Hall; two stepsons, Robert Schieber of Portsmouth and Joshua Kimm of Virginia Beach; his mother, Elizabeth Gill and her husband Timothy of Fredericksburg, Va.; his father, Jon Hall and his wife Patty of Slidell, La.; three sisters; one brother; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Princess Anne Plaza Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronald Lee. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. James E. Larkin III
VIRGINIA BEACH -- James E. Larkin III, 67, died Jan. 20, 2002 in a local hospital.
He was born in Bethesda, Md., and had retired as a charter life underwriter from Mutual of New York. He was the editor of SCC Newsletter.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda Snow-Larkin; a daughter, Gail Bencomo of Miami, Fla.; a son, Greg Larkin of Sarasota, Fla.; his mother, Roberta L. Larkin of Alexandria; a grandchild, Alexandra Bencomo of Miami; a stepdaughter, Michelle Snow and a stepson, Scott Snow, both of Virginia Beach. He was predeceased by his father, James B. Larkin.

Barbara B. Prosser

Robert H. Ripley
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Robert Hoskins Ripley, 96, of the 800 block of First Colonial Road, died Jan. 21, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Ripley was born on Jan. 24, 1905, in Matthews County, Va., to the late George W. Ripley and the late Mrs. Annie White Ripley. He was a former chief of the Norfolk Fire Department, having retired in 1949. Mr. Ripley was an insurance adjuster with the Adjustment Bureau in West Palm Beach, Fla., during his retirement. He was a member of the Men's Bible Class and an Honorary Member of the Administrative Board of the Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, where he also was a member. Mr. Ripley was a veteran of World War I, having served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard Lighthouse Service. He is survived by his loving wife of 78 years, Mrs. Sara Crocker Ripley of the home.
Besides his wife, Mr. Ripley is survived by his two daughters, Laura R. Seay and her husband, Carlton E. Seay, of Virginia Beach and Gloria R. Earley and her husband, Dr. Charles M. Earley Jr., also of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial celebration of the life of Mr. Ripley will be held on his 97th birthday, at 3 p.m. Thursday in Virginia Beach United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Tongue and the Rev. Dr. Eugene R. James C. Roberts
VIRGINIA BEACH -- James C. Roberts, 93, of Cardinal Estates, passed away Jan. 20, 2002 in Lynn Shores Health Center, where he had been a resident for 13 months.
James, known as "Cuz" to many friends, was born July 4, 1908, in Arapaho, N.C. He lived in the Baltimore area for a while and moved to this area in 1945. He retired from Associated Distributors in Chesapeake in 1976 and thereafter was employed as security at Colonnas Shipyard in Norfolk and Jack Rabbit Storage in Virginia Beach, following with nine years serving as a volunteer at Sentara Bayside Hospital before Alzheimer's forced him into retirement at the age of 90.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 23 years, Naomi. Also surviving are children, Chuck and his wife, Sandra, of Kansas City, Kan., James E. and his wife, Kathy, of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; six daughters, Joy Jones of Newbern, N.C., Linda Dinan and her husband, Joe, of Annapolis, Md., Jean Smith of Baltimore, Melody Stell of Suffolk, Sandra Elswick and her husband, Joe, of Chesapeake, and Wanda Elliott and her husband, Terry, of Virginia Beach; three stepchildren, Joyce Casler and her husband, Larry, of Mesa, Ariz., Darrell Richardson and wife, Jenny, of Lafontaine, Ind., and Dallas Richardson and his wife, Trisch, of Mentone, Ind.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son, Harold.
He loved his church and church family and was a faithful member of Suburban Christian Church in Kempsville, where he served as a board member for many years.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Suburban Christian Church, 5132 Bellamy Manor Drive, Virginia Beach, with the Rev. James A. Meads and Dr. Robert J. Grymes Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Park in Portsmouth. The family will receive family and friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Donald Edward Rump, 69, died Jan. 20, 2002, after a valiant fight against cancer.
Mr. Rump was born in Dillsboro, Ind., and was predeceased by his father, Walter F. Rump, and his mother, Hilda M. Licking.
Mr. Rump joined the Navy his senior year of high school and after 22 years of service, retired as a chief petty officer. He was an active member of the American Legion and an officer in the Fleet Reserve. For the past 30 years, he was employed by Motorola Inc., working in the U.S. Federal Government Markets Division as the National Account Service Manager for the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). He was due to retire in February. Everyone who was fortunate enough to have met Mr. Rump was touched by his humor, charm and generosity. He will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Sonja Siedenburg Rump, originally from Hamburg, Germany; daughter, Sylvia Marie Richendollar; her husband, K. Doug Richendollar; two granddaughters, Kelly Marie Richendollar and Karen Michelle Richendollar, all of Virginia Beach; a twin sister, Dorothy Bernhart and her husband, Marvin Bernhart of Jeffersonville, Ind.; a brother, Arnold Rump and his companion, Winnie Sidebottom of Dillsboro, Ind.; a sister, Marilyn Eades of Yuma, Ariz.; and a sister, Marion Black and her husband, Donald Black of Dillsboro, Ind.
The family would like to give special thanks to his nurses, Debbie Mitchell and Sue Smith; their kindness and compassion made such a difference during this difficult time.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends this evening at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m.

SUFFOLK -- Macie Harrison Small, 65, of the 3200 block of Matoaka Road, died Jan. 21, 2002, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital.
She was a native of Roanoke and a homemaker. She attended The Suffolk Church of God. She was the daughter of the late Jack Harrison and Hazel Small Harrison.
She is survived by her husband, Huey Small of Suffolk; daughters and sons-in-law, Macie Nicole and Jimmy Boswell of Suffolk, Hazel and Howard Small of Suffolk, and Stella and Roy Acey of Suffolk; 10 grandchildren, Huey Shane Small, Hazel Priscilla Small, Shanie Louise Small, Howard Malor Small, Jack Small, Macie White, Tiffany Acey, Stephanie Acey, Roy Acey, and Huey Isaih Acey; a great-grandson, Roudy Harrison Small of Suffolk; and a sister, Midgette Thomas of Woodbine, Ga.

A native of Winston-Salem, N.C., she was a retired bank teller from First Union and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband, Edward A. Sutter; her mother, Iris Kiaser Johnson of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Teresa Atkins of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sons, Mark Edward Renigar of Portsmouth and Todd Stuart Renigar of Columbia, S.C.; a niece whom she raised, April D. Prentiss of Chesapeake; a nephew whom she raised, Jeff Crawford of Suffolk; two sisters, Imogene Taylor of Winston-Salem and Cindy Johnson of Danberry, Va.; two brothers, Hank Johnson of Boone, N.C. and Marlon Johnson of Winston-Salem; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by Pastor Scott Benson. Burial will be at a later date. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and other times at 412 Florida Ave., Portsmouth.

Wanda G. Edwards
FRANKLIN -- Wanda Jean Griffin Edwards, 68, passed away at her home with her family by her side on Monday, Jan. 21, 2002.
Born May 14, 1933 in Boykins, she was the daughter of the late James Harvey Griffin and Lizzie Felts Griffin. Wanda attended Radford University and the Medical College of Virginia School of Nursing where she received her bachelor of science degree in nursing. She had worked as the patient care coordinator at Southampton Memorial Hospital, Southampton County Public Health Department, had taught nursing at Chowan College, and was a member of Franklin Congregational Christian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Robert R. "Bobby" Edwards; one daughter, Deborah E. Jenkins and husband John P.; one son, "Bruce" Edwards and wife Sandra I.; four grandchildren, Kimberly Ann Edwards, Megan Nicole Edwards, John Daniel Jenkins and Andrew Paul Jenkins; and one brother, T.R. Griffin. She was predeceased by a brother, James Griffin.
Funeral services will be held at Wright Funeral Home Chapel, Franklin, at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Dr. Richard Binderup and the Rev. Charles Chappell officiating. Burial will be in Poplar Springs Cemetery, Franklin. The family will receive friends at the residence. FRANKLIN -- Jimmie Harris of the 300 block of Grove Street, died Jan. 19, 2002 in his home.
The Sussex County native was a member of East End Church of God in Franklin. The eldest member of the church, he was a member of the Deacon Board and a Sunday School Teacher. He was the widower of Bertha Mae Chambliss Harris. After 47 years of service he retired from Union Camp Corporation.
His survivors include two daughters, Hattie M.H. Williams of Franklin and Catherine Harris Cross of Hopewell; three sons, Glenn E. Harris of Franklin, David L. Harris of Goldsboro, N.C. and James Harris of Baltimore, Md.; three sisters, Mable Pearson of Richmond, Betty H. Harris of Jarratt and Fannie Lee Lucas of Drewryville; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
A Homegoing service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at East End Church of God, 410 East Street, Franklin, with Bishop S.D. Willis delivering the Eulogy. Burial is in the Southview Cemetery. William M. Johnson & Sons, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Samuel L. Armstead
PLYMOUTH -- Samuel Lee Armstead, retired U.S. Navy, departed this life on Jan. 18, 2002, at his residence in the 100 block of Bateman St., Plymouth, after an illness. He was 69 years old.
Sam was a 1950 graduate of Plymouth Colored High School. While in high school, he was employed at the Roanoke Beacon newspaper. He was employed there until 1952 when he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He was stationed at the Marine Corps school from January 1952 until September 1955 when he joined the U.S. Navy. Sam had the following assignments over his 28-year career as a serviceman: Sept. 1955 to Dec. 1958, USS Roberts DE 749; Jan. 1959 to Dec. 1962, Robert F. Keller; Jan. 1963 to May 1966, USS Loser DE 680; June 1966 to Sept. 1968, MCB Nine; Nov. 1968 to Oct. 1969, USS Finch DER 328; Dec. 1969 to Feb. 1971, USS Ozbourn DD 846; April 1971 to May 1973, Navsta Washington, D.C.; May 1973 to March 1975, USS Laffey DD 724; May 1975 to Aug. 1977, USS Mount Whitney; Sept. 1977 to June 1983, Naval Station Norfolk. Sam received numerous citations and awards for outstanding service over his years of service. He retired in Norfolk in 1983.
After retiring from the U.S. Navy, Sam returned to Plymouth where he was employed by Simmons Funeral Home, the Washington County Sheriff's Department, the Washington County Board of Education and Toodle's Funeral Home. Sam served his community through memberships in the Carthagenia Masonic Lodge No. 38, the Scottish Rite Consistory No. 248, and the DAV Chapter No. 48. He was a faithful member of the New Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, the New Chapel Missionary Baptist Church Choir and the Golden Jubilee Quartet.
Sam is survived by his wife, Doris M. Armstead; a son, Samuel M. Armstead; six stepchildren, Quinterlene Bowens, Clifton Britton, Sharon Britton Irby, Vanessa Joyner, Natlie Baker and Lisa Cooley; a granddaughter, Chantelle; 16 stepgrandchildren; six sisters, Eloise Armstead, Mary Moore, Elizabeth Armstead, Elnora Armstead, Evelyn White and Delois Wells; two brothers, Lawrence Owens and William Morris Armstead; two aunts, Mattie Baxter and Estella Carson; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be held at the New Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Madison St., Plymouth, N.C., at 1 p.m. Thursday. The wake will be held Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at New Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.

Mrs. McAdams was born in Greensboro, N.C., to the late William Isaac Johnson and Hassie Calicutt Johnson, of North Carolina. After more than 20 years of faithful service, Mrs. McAdams had retired from Knotts Island Market.
Mrs. McAdams is survived by her husband, Clarence Edward McAdams of Knotts Island; two daughters, Martha Sue Dye and husband, Bruce, of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., and Donna Strawhand of Corolla, N.C.; two sons, Joe DeWitt and wife, Marsha, of Mayodan, N.C. and Phillip Edward and wife, Vi, of Madison, Miss.; one sister, Mary Carter of Winterville, Ga.; two brothers, Jack Johnson of Durham, N.C. and Harold Johnson, of Phoenix, Ariz. She is also survived by ten grandchildren; Glenn, Leah, Michael, Debbie, Angela, Joe, Flip, Leslie, Robert, and Margaret Ann; and pre-deceased by Wayne Collins Willis Jr. There are 12 surviving great-grandchildren; Christy, Nicole, Sean, Daryl, Jessica, Alyssa, Christopher, Robert, Lindsay, Kirstie, Kasie and Haylie.
A visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Twiford's Colonial Chapel, 292 S. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake. HERNDON -- Regina King Broder, 53, died Jan. 17, 2002, at the Halquist Memorial Hospice Center in Arlington, Va., after an extended illness.
Mrs. Broder was born in Portsmouth, raised in Suffolk and spent her married life in Virginia Beach and Herndon, Va.
Her husband, Nigel Broder of Herndon, and her daughter, Caroline Broder of Alexandria, survive her. Her father, Charles E. King, her brother, Charles E. King Jr., both of Suffolk, and her sister, Jane King Butler of Charlottesville, Va., also survived her. Mrs. Broder has three nephews, A. Rawles Butler and C. Adam Butler of New York City and R. Garren Brown of Virginia Beach. Her mother, Jean Dickinson King, predeceased her, as well as her sister, Rozanne King Brown, Catherine King Frazier and her nephew, C. Conrad Frazier.
Mrs. Broder was a member of The Community Church of Sterling, Va., where a funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. today with interment to follow at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Herndon.

She was born in Williamsport, Pa., and was a lifelong member of First Christian Church in Beckley, W.Va. She was very active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and also formerly involved with the Girl Scouts, The Old Guard at William and Mary and Chi Omega Sorority.
Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Bonnie Lila Bowman Thurston of Wheeling, W.Va.; a son, A.V. Bowman of Virginia Beach; and two grandchildren, Michael Warner Bowman and Samuel Ernest Bowman. She was predeceased by two brothers, James and Markley King.

TYNER -- Margaret Lane Smithson, 87, of the 100 block of County Line Road, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, in the Skilled Nursing Facility of Chowan Hospital.
Mrs. Smithson was born in Chowan County and was the daughter of the late Martha and Henry Elsberry Lane. A graduate of East Carolina Teacher's College, now East Carolina University, she retired from the Chowan County School System after teaching for 30 years. She was a member of the Center Hill United Methodist Church, Edenton Chapter No. 302, The Order of the Eastern Star, and the North Carolina Educators Association.
She was predeceased by her husband, Rufus Miles Smithson, and a son, the Rev. Rufus Miles Smithson Jr. She is survived by a daughter, Frances S. Bass and her husband Carroll of Edenton; a son, Philip L. Smithson of Tyner; two sisters, Lois Purvis of Savannah, Ga., and Myrtle Mathews of Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Edenton, by the Rev. Mike Askew and the Rev. Ralph Epps. Donna Marie Croom
HAMPTON -- Donna Marie Croom, 40, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Riverside Regional Medical Center.
A Hampton resident since 1973, Donna graduated from Hampton High School in 1979 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Norfolk State University in 1983 and a master's degree from Old Dominion University in 1998.
She began her teaching career at Davis Middle School in Hampton. She had been teaching sixth-grade English at Blair Middle School in Norfolk since 1998.
Donna joined Queen Street Baptist Church at an early age and enjoyed the years she sang in the Inspirational Choir and the friendships she developed with fellow members. She was an active member of Lambda Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and worked diligently on many committees within the sorority.
Her father, DeRocke H. Croom Sr., preceded Donna in death. She leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her loving memories her mother, Armanda Croom; three brothers, Jerry, Jeffery and DeRocke Jr.; three sisters, Bonita, Pamela and Wanda; sister-in-law, Cynetta; brother-in-law, Steve; six nieces, Tomika, Kieyetta, Tennile, Mary, Jordan and Tamaya; five nephews, Jeff Jr., Jeremy, Jerry II, Marcus and Darian; a godchild, Antoinette Brown; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and very special friends.
Family and friends were important to Donna and she was a kind, giving person who often went out of her way to assist others. Her big smile and life-loving spirit will continue to be loved and greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Charles W. Byrd
RICHMOND -- Dr. Charles William Byrd, 83, died Jan. 18, 2002. He was born in Locust Grove, Ga., graduated from the University of Georgia in 1939, and was a 1943 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia.
He served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Europe during World War II and was the recipient of a Purple Heart, Bronze Star with First Oak Cluster, Distinguished Unit Badge and Meritorious Service Unit Plaque. Upon his discharge from the army, Dr. Byrd completed his residency in general surgery at the McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond. He served as acting chief of surgery at McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital prior to entering private practice in 1961. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Byrd served as chief medical officer of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad Co. He was a member of Westover Hills United Methodist Church, Willow Oaks Country Club, and a former board member and former president of the Medical Staff of the Retreat Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Lee Donati Byrd; three daughters, Claudia Byrd Macdonald of Richmond, Dr. Rebecca Byrd Kearns of Norfolk and Jane Byrd Cooke of Richmond; a son, Charles W. Byrd Jr. of Richmond; 12 grandchildren, Jonathan Byrd Macdonald, Rebecca Norwood Macdonald, Benjamin Lee Macdonald, Charles William Byrd III, Sarah Catherine Byrd, James Alexander Byrd, Kate Alexander Kearns, William Albert Kearns, Patrick Byrd Kearns, Caroline Ann Cooke, Jack Edward Cooke and Mark Andrew Cooke. He was predeceased by a brother, Henry Lee Byrd, formerly of Pittsburgh, Pa., and is survived by a sister, Ruth Byrd Cobb of Americus, Ga.
A private family burial service will be in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Westover Hills United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the church.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Barbara Anne Daughtrey Webb, "Grammy," 74, died Jan. 15, 2002. She was a proud graduate of The College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, Va., Class of 1949. While in college she met lifelong friends and was an active member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She retired in 1991 after 25 years and had a successful career in social work for Harris County Family Court Services. Following retirement she moved to San Antonio, Texas and filled her life giving unconditional love and time to her three grandchildren. Grammy was a woman of strong faith and was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in San Antonio. She bestowed upon her family her unshakable love of the Lord and used her spiritual gifts everyday of her life. In Grammy's own words, "I am the luckiest and happiest Grammy in San Antonio."
Survivors include her children, Ralph Thompson and wife, Carol, of Fulton, Texas, Jeff Thompson, Beth Mangum and husband, Rick, all of San Antonio; three grandchildren, Christine, Kelsey, Matthew Mangum, all of San Antonio; aunt, Elizabeth Pond and husband, Arthur, of Richmond, Va.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today in St. Luke's Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Luckenbach officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations will be graciously accepted at her beloved College of William and Mary, Box 1693, Williamsburg, VA 23185.

Ben S. Lewis Jr.
SOUDERTON, Pa. -- Ben S. Lewis Jr. died suddenly Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, in Towamencin Township, Pa. He was 29.
He was born in Middletown, Conn., and had resided in Souderton for the past two years, moving there from Germany. He grew up in Jacksonville, Fla., where he attended Stanton College Prep in Jacksonville and graduated with honors in 1989. He went on to graduate from The American University in Washington, D.C., in 1993 with a degree in International Relations and Economics. He also received an advanced degree from the University of Heidelberg in Heidelberg, Germany, through a Rotary International Foundation Scholarship and was an adjunct faculty member at Delaware Valley College. He was the director of Decision Support for Advanta Business Cards in Spring House, Pa., where he had worked since December 1999.
He was the beloved husband of Stephanie J. (Nee Wheeler) Lewis of Souderton, and the loving father of Christian S. and Kaitlynn J. Lewis, both at home. He is also survived by his father, Ben S. Lewis Sr. and his wife Pat of Virginia Beach; his mother, Gloria Fortin and her husband Ron of Yulee, Fla.; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. George W. Lewis of Metairie, La.; his sister, Dawn C. Van Horn and her husband Kevin of Jacksonville, Fla., and their two children Bryan and Kristina; and his in-laws, Bill and Joan Wheeler of Indian Mills, N.J.
Relatives and friends are invited to greet family from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Bradley and Stow Funeral Home, 127 Medford-Mount Holly Road, (Route 541), Medford, N.J., (609) 953-7600, where a funeral service will follow on Wednesday at noon. Interment will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Medford, N.J.
