Bertha W. Stewart
CHESAPEAKE -- Bertha Jane Wright Stewart, 74, of the 900 block of Long Ridge Road, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, after a long illness.
Mrs. Stewart was born in Watertown, N.Y., and attended the State University of New York (Potsdam), the Strong Memorial Hospital nursing program, and Texas Wesleyan University. She moved to Norfolk County upon her marriage in 1949. For many years, she worked as a nursing assistant for Dr. Ricohermoso in his Chesapeake office. Known to friends and relatives as "B," she was loved by all for her kind and generous nature, and was a lifelong Christian.
Mrs. Stewart was predeceased by her husband, Shirley M. Stewart Jr., whose family has resided in Norfolk County for more than 200 years. Survivors include four children, Dianne Stewart of Palo Alto, Calif., Karen Stewart of Washington, D.C., Fred Stewart of Delaware and Michael Stewart of Chesapeake. She is also survived by four beloved granddaughters, Angela Watson, Melody Stewart and Caroline and Katherine White.
A graveside service will be held at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel, is handling arrangements.

CHESAPEAKE -- Katherine M. "Tatti" Wood, 63, of the 1200 block of Boxwood Drive, died Jan. 13, 2002. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church. Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway, is in charge.
Arthur Jay Conrad
NORFOLK -- Arthur Jay Conrad, formerly of the 1600 block of Garfield Drive, Norfolk, died Jan. 12, 2002. He was a native of Manaroneck, N.Y.
He was predeceased by his wife, Helen Rita Conrad, and two sons, the Rev. Arthur Dennis Conrad and Robert W. Wyant.
He is survived by a son, James E. Wyant and his wife Nancy of Venal, Utah; a sister, Mary Collins of Ossining, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was a retired U.S. Army chief warrant officer W-4, with 25 years active service, having retired in June 1959. He was a veteran of World War II and had participated in eight campaigns: Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He made three D-Day assault landings: Oran Algeria 1942, Gela Sicily 1943 and Normandy France 1944. Among his awards and decorations are the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, seven Overseas Bars, with three Combat Assault Arrows, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with device (X), Order of Chevalier de Leopold with Palm from Belgium and the Croix de Guerre with Palm from Belgium, the French and Belgium Fourrageres, American Theatre Ribbon and the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon. He was in the battles for Kasserine Pass, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Remagen Bridgehead, also the first German city, Aachen, to be captured. He was in the original faculty of the Armed Forces Staff College.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church by the Rev. Fr. Wayne Ball. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive, has charge of arrangements.

Evelyn P. Nichols
NORFOLK -- Evelyn P. Nichols, 79, of the 6400 block of Horton Circle, was called home to the Lord on Jan. 12, 2002.
She was the daughter of Fannie Mae Jones and St. Elmo Pugh in Norfolk, and the widow of James Nichols.
She leaves behind daughters, Rose Nichols, Ann Nichols and Catherine Dantzler; grandchildren, Kristopher Nichols, Kristin Nichols, Schulyer Dantzler, James Nichols and Jeffrey Nichols; sister-in-law, Virginia Pugh; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Mrs. Nichols' remains were donated to the State Anatomical Board. Graves Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Sylvia W. Carson
NORFOLK -- On Thursday afternoon, Jan. 10, 2002, the Death Angel visited the DePaul Medical Center and quietly took from our family circle, after a short illness, our beloved mother and grandmother, Sylvia Ward Carson of Bonnot Drive.
She was born in Suffolk to the late Milton Ward and Mary Ellen Boone on Dec. 2, 1935. She was also predeceased by a brother, Wilbert Wheeler Sr. She was a graduate of East Suffolk High School in Suffolk, and a former member of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Suffolk. After moving to Norfolk, she later joined Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained until her passing.
She retired from Federal Fleet and Industrial Supply Center of Norfolk for 27 years of service. She was a member of the Area Council Missionary of Norfolk, Adult Sunday School, AARP, Lupus Foundation, Single's Group of Eastern Virginia Chapter, Family Investment Center at Oakmont North, NAACP, No. 2 Choir at Mount Gilead, and Board of Christian Education: Affiliated Mason and Holmes Missionary of Norfolk, Affiliated Women's Auxiliary of Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Convention, Affiliated Virginia Baptist State Convention, Affiliated Tidewater Peninsula Baptist Association, Affiliated BTU Congress: "Missionary of the Year 2001," Election Officer of city of Norfolk; office clerk at one time Bell Atlantic Telephone in South Hampton Roads Area; secretary of Tanners Creek East Civic League of Norfolk; participated with Christian Broadcasting Network Inc.; provided church correspondence to Military Families; and volunteered as Receptionist for Benevolence.
Sylvia was married to Willie Leslie Carson and to this union was born two children. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She dedicated her life for their comfort and enjoyment. She made it known to her family and friends constantly that she was ready to answer when God called her.
Her survivors are stepfather, William Boone of Suffolk; two daughters, Sheila Bentley of Virginia Beach and Connie White Sherrill of Willingboro, N.J.; three stepsisters, Delores Simpson of Suffolk, Frances McCray and Virginia Small of New York; four stepbrothers, Calvin of Newport News, Raymond, Edward and Charles Boone of New York; five grandchildren, Marques and Falynn of Virginia Beach, Shauvaun, Nathan and Britni of New Jersey; one great-grandchild, Ymani of New Jersey; two sons-in-law, William Bentley of Virginia Beach and James Sherrill of New Jersey; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Gilead Baptist Church, 1057 Kennedy St., with Dr. Shelton Murphy officiating. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery, Suffolk. Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. at Riddick Funeral Service.
Ruth W. Schmidt
NORFOLK -- Ruth Wright Schmidt, 97, died Jan. 13, 2002 at a local nursing home. She was born April 17, 1904 in the Ghent section of Norfolk. Her family moved to Willoughby around 1907. She became a member of Ocean View Baptist Church around 1913. She was a member of the Vota Vita Sunday School Class.
After graduation from Harrisonburg State Teachers College, she taught Home Economics in Norfolk Public Schools. She later worked as the head dietitian at Veterans Hospitals in Norfolk, Richmond, Mississippi and California. She resided in California many years with her husband, Joseph Schmidt (deceased).
Survivors include a daughter, Susan S. Weis of McLean, Va.; a son, Conrad Schmidt of Santa Barbara, Calif.; a sister, Jessie Wright Clevenger of Canton, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Virginia H. Wright of Virginia Beach; many nieces, nephews and grandchildren. She was predeceased by six sisters, Isabelle Wright, Elizabeth Wright, Virginia W. Griffin, Margaret Wright, Mary W. Vaughan, and Esther W. Cawthorne; and three brothers, Joseph A. Wright, Peter A. Wright and John Y. Wright.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by the Rev. Hutch Matteson, pastor of Ocean View Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

PORTSMOUTH -- Edna T. Brown, 87, of the 2400 block of Cutherell St., died Jan. 10, 2002.
She retired from Miller Day Nursery after 35 years of service. She was the widow of Morgan Brown Sr. and a member of Fourth Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Usher Board, Cora B. Scott Club, Memorial Choir, member of Sunday School Class and member of Bible Study Class.
Survivors include a son, Morgan Brown Jr. of Portsmouth; goddaughter, Marjorie Williams of Franklin; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; devoted friends, Deacon and Mrs. William Lindsey, cousins and many other friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Fourth Baptist Church by the Rev. Charles Beamon. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery. Fisher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family will be at the residence. Viewing began at noon Monday.

PORTSMOUTH -- Mary Burgess Burcher, 80, died Jan. 14, 2002. She was a native of Camden, N.C., a member of Fairview Heights Baptist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the DAV. She was employed at Star Band, Kirk Cone Rehabilitation Center and the Holiday House.
Mrs. Burcher was the widow of Oliver Hollowell Burcher. She is survived by two daughters, Kay L. Burcher, Juanita B. Wasco and husband, Tony; a son, Donald W. Burcher Sr.; four grandchildren, Donald W. Burcher Jr., Natalie A. Burcher, Kellie L. Wasco and Scott A. Wasco; a special niece, Lois Allen; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Fred Williams and the Rev Walter C. Hunting in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, today from 7 to 8 p.m. and they suggest memorial contributions to the American Lung Association.

PORTSMOUTH -- Shirley Ann "Candy" Holloway, 46, of the 2300 block of Chestnut St., died Jan. 10, 2002 at the Medical College of Virginia.
Born in Portsmouth, she was the widow of Obie Lewis Holloway.
She is survived by two daughters, Sabrina Swain and Katina Holloway; three sons, Obie Holloway, Cory Holloway and Kevin Holloway; her mother, Juanita Swain; two brothers, Paul Swain and Everett Swain; grandmother Jewel Powell, all of Portsmouth; three aunts; three uncles; a devoted friend, Renatos "Bay-Bay" Williams; six grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her father, Johnnie Williams; a sister, Patricia Swain; and a brother, Kevin Swain.
A funeral will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Third Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Joe Flemings with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Viewing will begin at noon today. PORTSMOUTH -- Ben Mintz, 74, of the 200 block of Cherokee Road, died Jan. 14, 2002 in a local nursing home.
He was born in Newbern, N.C., and was a retired property maintenance manager.
Survivors include Mary Helen Mintz, his loving wife of 53 years; two daughters, Lynn Moore and Catherine Mintz, both of Chesapeake; a son, Robert B. Mintz of North Carolina; two sisters, Lynn Swilley and Dot Burbage; a brother, Edward Mintz; and numerous grandchildren, family and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens by Pastor Ted Fortenberry. The family will receive friends at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
He died peacefully after a heroic battle with cancer. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Irene R. Rollins
PORTSMOUTH -- Irene Roberts "Renee" Rollins, 78, recently of Kill Devil Hills, died Jan. 13, 2002. Mrs. Rollins, a native of Portsmouth had formerly worked in the accounting department of Portsmouth General Hospital.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Charles D. "Chuck" Rollins; a daughter, Dee Rollins Watts of Nashville, Tenn.; two sons, Dan Rollins of Minneapolis, Minn., and Duke Rollins of Centreville, Va.; four grandchildren, Coleman, Paige, Olivia and Kyle; and a brother, Frank Roberts of Fairfax, Va.

Sue P. Currie
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Sue Phillips Currie passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002.
Born Oct. 9, 1909 in Norfolk, she moved to the north end of Virginia Beach to care for her mother in 1957. Through the years she opened her door to many in need. Her family and friends marveled at the grace with which she lived her life.
She leaves behind a loving son Robbie and wife, Betsy; three grandchildren, Jonma, Julie and Bo Currie; two great-grandchildren, Luna and Jordan Currie, all of Virginia Beach; and a special niece, Susanna Dunbar and husband, Doug of Viena, Va.
Her smile never faded.
A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday in Princess Anne Memorial Park by the Rev. Mark Delcuze at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8 p.m. at Maestas Funeral Home, Baltic Ave. Chapel. Richard L. Goyette
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Richard Leonard Goyette, 66, of 3216 Club House Circle, passed away Jan. 12, 2002 in Virginia Beach Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center. A native of Ludlow, Mass., he was a son of Eva Schaff Goyette of Norwich, Conn., and the late Leonard Thomas Goyette, and the beloved husband of Joanne L. Fazzino Goyette.
Richard was an active member of Saint Nicholas Catholic Church and served as an employment minister for the church. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1956, spending most of his career on submarines, including a tour on the first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus SSN-571 and retired as a Lt. after 26 years of service. After retirement from the Navy, he was a consultant for Primerica Financial Services.
In addition to his mother and devoted wife, Joanne of 42 years, he is survived by a son, Christopher, of Whitman, Mass.; a daughter, Jennifer of Virginia Beach; a son, Stephen and wife, Leslie, and granddaughters, Kaitlin and Kendal, all of Elizabeth City, N.C.; a sister, Shirley Wunderlich and husband, Donald, of Voluntown, Conn.; sister-in-law, Margaret E. Graf, niece, Kelly and nephew, Jonathan, all of Virginia Beach, and several nieces and nephews of Connecticut.
The family will receive friends in St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 712 Little Neck Road, on Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Msgr. Raymond Barton at 7 p.m. with a reception following. Burial with full Military Honors will be Friday, 11 a.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Regis H. Dunlap
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Regis Harry Dunlap, 80, of the 3600 block of Sir Wilfred Place, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, in a Norfolk hospital. He was retired after 22 years of service in the U.S Navy having achieved the rank of lieutenant and serving in World War II and Korea. After his retirement he went to work for the City of Norfolk, where he also retired as an assistant in the Commissioner of Revenue Office. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of the late Josephine Cavanaugh Dunlap and John Dunlap.
Mr. Dunlap attended Kings Grant Baptist Church and was an active and cherished member of the Norfolk Host Lions Club. Regis was also an avid golfer and a member of the Senior Golfer's Association of Ocean View Golf Club.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Elizabeth C. Dunlap; a daughter, Lisa Ann Dunlap of Virginia Beach; his son, Blair H. Dunlap and wife, Lorraine of Virginia Beach; a brother, William Dunlap of Youngstown, Ohio; and five grandchildren whom he adored, Christian Dunlap and wife, Stacey, Joseph Dunlap, Ryan Dunlap, Elizabeth Marie Dunlap and John Dunlap, all of Virginia Beach.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Kings Grant Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerry B. Holcomb. Entombment of his cremains will be in Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium on Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. with military honors. Cox Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Michael D. Miller
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Michael D. Miller, 52, died Jan. 13, 2002 at Virginia Beach General Hospital.
He was the loving husband of 31 years of Cheryl D. Miller of Virginia Beach. He has two children, Stephanie H. Serbia and her husband Jose A. Serbia, and his son, PFC David M. Miller.
He retired from the U.S. Navy as an OSC (SW) with 21 years of service including several tours of duty in Vietnam. From 1988 to 1999 he was employed by J.B. Hunt Transport.
Besides his wife and children, Michael is survived by his parents, Marvin E. and Ada Miller of Magalia, Calif.; two sisters, Sally J. Miller of Paradise, Calif., and Lillian K. Budge of Kent, Wash.

Michael will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Flora N. Maziarka
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Flora Nell Maziarka passed away Jan. 12, 2002. She was born Aug. 31, 1932 at Chattahoochee, Fla. She was a retired insurance agent with Fred Martin Insurance of Chesapeake.
Nell is survived by her loving husband, John J. Maziarka Sr.; her son, Donald Massey; and her daughter, Deborah Rogers. She was predeceased by her son, Michael Massey Sr. Also surviving are three brothers, Harold, Eugene and Harry Faircloth; and two sisters, Charlotte Ivey and Sarah Whitehurst; two grandchildren, Michael Massey Jr. and McKenzie Rogers.
Nell was dearly loved and will be missed by her family.
A funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, with entombment to follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Mary Shirley Pruitt, 87, of First Colonial Inn, died Jan. 14, 2002, in Virginia Beach.
She was a native of Anderson County, S.C., and the widow of George Alfred Pruitt. She retired from the Virginia Beach Department of Social Services as a supervisor of Child Services, and she was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, George Stephen Pruitt and wife Barbara of Virginia Beach; a sister, Irene Hunt of Knoxville, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Carol Ann Taylor, Leigh Smith and Laura Pruitt; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Greenlawn Mausoleum Chapel by the Rev. Tom Potter. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Mausoleum. Catherine S. Peele
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Catherine S. Peele, 59, of the 900 block of N. Plantation Drive, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002 at Virginia Beach General Hospital.
A graduate of the University of East Carolina, Cathy worked with the Norfolk Department of Social Services until she was hired by Virginia Beach City Public Schools as a special education teacher at Virginia Beach Junior High School. She began teaching social studies and continued in that area for 31 years until her retirement in 1997. During her years at Virginia Beach Junior she was actively involved in many areas of student education, including extra-curricular activities. She was the debate coach for many years. Cathy was admired and respected by her peers and loved by her students.
Cathy is survived by her devoted husband of 28 years, Frank P. Peele Jr. and her adopted family, Mike, Marsha, David, Adam, Melissa and Tyler Henry and her "second Mom" Janet Harrier along with special friends Pete, Amy, Blake and Chase Hathaway. Other members of the family include Cathy's mother- and father-in-law, Lucille and Frank P. Peele Sr., sister-in-law, Linda Peele, and niece, Patricia Lumsden. "Every experience God gives us, every person He puts in our lives, is the perfect preparation for the future that only He can see." The family and friends of Cathy are very grateful for the blessing of having her in their lives although the time was too short.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Adeline Grace Struneski of the 300 block of Opal Avenue died Jan. 9, 2002 at Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include four children, George Ody Jr., Cecelia Reed, Sharon Zackoski and Diana Kleiber; two brothers and a sister, Fred Crandall, Bud Crandall and Dorthy Beliveau; along with 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- A. Page Ware, 85, died Jan. 13, 2002.
Mr. Ware was vice president of Talley-Anchor Sign Company in Chesapeake. He was a past president of the Downtown Norfolk Kiwanis Club; past president, Norfolk Executives Club; past president, Tidewater Heart Association; past chairman, 1966 Azalea Festival; past chairman, Armed Forces Committee; and past chairman, Norfolk Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Board of Directors for Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, Sentara Leigh Hospital, Goodwill Industries and was a member of Wednesday Morning Prayer Breakfast, an Ordained Elder of Bayside Presbyterian Church and a member of Norfolk Sports Club.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Dorothy Webster, 82, of the 1500 block of Mill Dam Road, died Jan. 13, 2002, in Virginia Beach.
Mrs. Webster was a native of Pittsburgh, Pa.
Survivors include her husband, Howard F. Webster of Virginia Beach; three sons, Warren Roler of Indiana, the Rev. Charles N. Wiest and his wife Dottie of Virginia Beach, Ray Wiest and his wife Shirley of Norfolk; her sister, Mary Harrington of Ohio; three granddaughters, Angela and Heather Wiest of Virginia Beach, Patricia Wiest of Norfolk; and a great-grandson, Joseph Wiest of Virginia Beach.
A church service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Heritage United Methodist Church by her son, the Rev. Charles N. Wiest. H.D. Elbert R. Howard
SUFFOLK -- Elbert Ray Howard, 57, died at his home Jan. 13, 2002.
Born Feb. 20, 1944, in Bertie County, N.C., he was the son of Edna Dunn Howard of Suffolk and the late Ernest W. Howard. Mr. Howard had served in the Air Force Intelligence and was retired from General Foods Corp. He was a member of Suffolk Presbyterian Church for 33 years and was a former elder of the church.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his daughters, Pamela Rene Holland and her husband Kevin, and Allison Marie Howard, all of Suffolk; sisters, Gladys Pearl Rawles of Ahoskie, Jane Alice Lawrence of Portsmouth, Susan Annette Simpkins of Suffolk, and Victoria Jean Carr of Zuni; brother, Richard Carroll Howard of Smithfield; and grandson, Austin Holland.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Suffolk Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Allen Johnson. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service and other times at 126 Causey Ave.

SMITHFIELD -- Mary "Georgie" O'Berry Jones, 98, of the 100 block of Cary St., died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, in Riverside Convalescent Center. She was a native of Isle of Wight County, a homemaker and served as a pastor's wife for 45 years. She was a member of Pine Grove Assembly of God Church.
Her husband, the Rev. Horace Bernard Jones, and sons, Elbert P. Jones Sr. and Horace G. Jones Sr., preceded Mrs. Jones in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Frances W. Jones of Smithfield and Madeline J. Clark of Detroit, Mich.; two sons, the Rev. Norflett R. Jones and his wife Rosemary of Elyria, Ohio, and Robert W. Jones and his wife Bunny of Ivor; a special daughter-in-law, Betty S. Jones of Smithfield; four sisters, Ruth O. Slye of Newport News, Florrie O. Lee of Hopewell, Grace O. Stephenson of Windsor and Doris O. Martin of Newport News; a brother, William O'Berry and his wife Virginia of Windsor; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Colonial Funeral Home Chapel, Smithfield, with the Rev. Alton Hinson officiating. Burial will follow in St. Luke's Memorial Park, Smithfield. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Ruth Rowland Case
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Ruth Rowland Case, 72, of the 100 block of Washington St., died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at her residence.
Mrs. Case was born in Ozark, Ala., the daughter of the late William A. and Elizabeth Rowland. She was the widow of William Wesley Case and a homemaker.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda Ruth Hinson and her husband Marvin Wayne Hinson of Suffolk, and Elizabeth Case Clary and her husband Dalton Wayne Clary of Roanoke Rapids; her stepmother, Gladys A. Rowland of Newton, Ala.; and four grandchildren, Christina Nicole Hinson, Susan Elaine Hinson and Matthew Wayne Hinson, all of Suffolk, and Chase Wesley Clary of Roanoke Rapids.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Wrenn Funeral Home Chapel, 1015 West Fifth Street, Roanoke Rapids, with the Rev. Ron Gibson officiating. Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family received friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Agnes W. Duling
HERTFORD -- Agnes Virginia Wood Duling, 97, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, in Brian Care Center.
A native of Fayette County, W.Va., she was the widow of the Rev. Charles Wesley Duling and the daughter of the late Io Judy and O.G. Wood. She taught art in both Hertford and Nitro, W.Va. She was a member of Hertford Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte D. Pedan of Beaufort, N.C.; a son, James W. Duling of Triangle, Va.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a grandson, James W. Duling Jr., and seven brothers.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swindell Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Kenneth McNeill officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Wood Cemetery.

Martha T. Hassell
MANNS HARBOR -- Martha Brent Twiddy Hassell, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, in a Nags Head nursing home. Mrs. Hassell, born in East Lake, N.C., was a homemaker and a member of the East Lake Holiness Church. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Ella Cain Twiddy, the widow of Clarence Hassell and was also preceded in death by a son, Henry Hassell.
Mrs. Hassell is survived by two sons, Joseph Hassell and George Milton Hassell, both of Manns Harbor; six daughters, Ella Swain of Columbia, N.C., Shirley Jackson of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Alpean Terry of Jonesville, Va., Frances Forbes of Shiloh, N.C., Jennie Gibbs of Wanchese, N.C., and Sucellia Fagley of Manns Harbor, N.C.; 23 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at East Lake United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bobby Beasley and the Rev. Anthony Ralph officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Twiford's Funeral Home, Manteo, and at other times at the home of Joseph Hassell, 77 N. Mashoes Road, Manns Harbor, and the home of Jennie Gibbs, 126 Brothers Lane, Wanchese. The family will assemble at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday prior to the funeral at the funeral home and will go in procession to the church.
Noreen O'Neill
NAGS HEAD -- Noreen O'Neill, 48, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at her residence.
Ms. O'Neill was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and was an English teacher at Youngstown State University. She was the daughter of Edward Phillip O'Neill of Martins Point, Kitty Hawk, and Ruth A. Quinlan O'Neill of Nags Head.
Besides her parents, Ms. O'Neill is survived by one sister, Paula Ann Corbin of Nags Head; and three brothers, Edward L. O'Neill of Venice Beach, Calif., Timothy J. O'Neill of San Diego, Calif., and Leonard O'Neill of Hollywood, Fla.

Marguerite L. Ives
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Marguerite Leffers Ives, 81, died quietly after a brief illness on Friday, Jan. 11, 2002 at University of Virginia Medical Center.
She was born in Cradock, Va., Sept. 4, 1920 to the late Cora Willis Leffers and Robert Sloan Leffers. She lived in the Tidewater area until 1994, when she relocated to Charlottesville, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Archie Randolph Ives Jr.; sisters, Kathleen Leffers Simmons, Virginia Leffers Curtice, Velma Leffers Cronin; and one brother, Robert Vincent Leffers.
Survivors include a daughter, Judith Ives Runion and husband Gene Runion; granddaughter, Marguerite "Meg" Catherine Runion, all of Charlottesville; and a beloved sister, Lena Dean and her husband James Edward Duffee of Richmond. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Mary Leffers, now residing in Lynchburg, Va.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a dear friend and neighbor of many years, Shirley Suter of Chesapeake.
Marguerite, known as "Maggie" to her many friends and family, retired as an AT&T employee after working for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company for 25 years. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. She was also an active member of the Metropolitan Music Club in Virginia Beach. Her primary interests were her many family members, friends, enjoying her organ music and celebrating in her family's accomplishments. She also leaves behind many friends that she made at the Northridge Cardiac Rehab Center.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 1 p.m. today at Hill and Wood Chapel, 1st Street, Charlottesville. A delayed interment will be announced at a date in early March, following the return of her beloved granddaughter, and will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Granby Street, Norfolk.
