Grover T. Alger
Grover Thomas Alger, 67, of Bethel Church Road, Elkton, died early Friday morning. He was born Sept. 12, 1933, at Elkton, and was the son of the late David Hunter Alger and Ida Florence Stoneberger Alger. Mr. Alger was a member of the Bethel United Church of Christ where he had served as a deacon and trustee. He was a 1951 graduate of Elkton High School and retired from Wayne Manufacturing after 30 years of service. He continued to work as a self-employed carpenter and was an avid fisherman and sports fan. On June 30, 1952, he married the former Glenna Meadows, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte Alger Saufley and Robbie Saufley of Mount Sidney, Jean Alger Flick and Joseph Flick, III of Elkton, Beth Alger Loker and David Loker of Elkton; a son, Grover Thomas Alger, Jr. and wife, Kristi Alger of Waynesboro; two brothers, Lenwood Alger of Elkton, Carroll Alger of Chincoteague; 10 grandchildren, Marcia, Duane, Christa, Justin, Staci, Tom, Daniel, Kevin, Casey and Jacob; one great-grandchild, Troy. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lorene Michael and Lucille Breeden and one brother, Harry Alger. The Rev. Thomas Madren will conduct the funeral at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Bethel United Church of Christ near Elkton. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, McGaheysville. Helen R. Harper
Helen Rhodes Harper, 88, Farmville, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in Lynchburg. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Wilson Harper. She is survived by a son, Wilson Harper Jr. of Marion. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Farmville United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Westview Cemetery, Farmville. Bernice W. Wilson
Bernice Walker Wilson of Richmond passed away Feb. 7, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Owen Wilson and was the daughter of Gancela A. and Bernice Rudd Walker. She is survived by her son, Ronald Walker Wilson and his wife, Joyce Roberts Wilson; sisters, Virginia W. Walton, Elinor W. Lindsey, Thelma L. Walker; brothers, Eugene A. Walker, John G. Walker, Leonard B. Walker and Owen R. Walker; granddaughters, Anna Camille Wilson and Julia Rose Wilson; uncles, William L. Walker and Edward R. Walker; and Bernice was dearly loved by many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Wilson attended Mary Baldwin College, was employed by Augusta County Schools as Title I teacher. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Richmond and a former member of Harrisonburg Church of the Brethren and Graceland Baptist Church. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home s Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, where the family will receive friends 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday and where services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday. Interment will be at Gracelend Baptist Church Cemetery, Powhatan, Va.

Julia E. Quinn
Julia Ernestine Quinn, 72, 857 Rileyville Road, Rileyville, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Mount Vernon Hospital in Alexandria. Mrs. Quinn was born May 12, 1928, in Alexandria, and was a daughter of the late Herbert Mitchell Bragg and Edna Pearl Davis Bragg. She was a homemaker and a member of Downtown Baptist Church in Alexandria. On June 22, 1946, she married John Edward Quinn, who died May 2, 2000. Survivors include five daughters, Kathleen S. Cash, Rileyville, Judith A. Wray and Karen B. Dovel, both of Alexandria, Barbara D. Bushlow, Woodbridge, and Mary B. Dale, Luray; three sons, John E. Quinn Jr., Rileyville, and Timothy M. Quinn and Douglas J. Quinn, both of Woodbridge; a brother, Albert Bragg, Lorton; a sister, Ellen Brown, King George; 22 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. The Rev. David Johnson will conduct the funeral at 11 a.m. Monday at the Bradley Funeral Home in Luray. Burial will be at Beahm s Chapel Cemetery in Luray. Louise M. Cash
Louise Marie "Sis" Cash, 78, MontVue Nursing Home, Luray, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at the nursing home. Mrs. Cash was born Sept. 8, 1922, in Shenandoah, and was a daughter of the late Hubert Campbell and Mamie Smeltzer Campbell. She was a homemaker. On June 10, 1942, she married Jeffrey Wilson Cash, who died Jan. 5, 1982. Surviving are two daughters, Kathy Diane Roadcap, Springfield, and Rose Marie Grant, Oklahoma City, Okla.; five sons, Robert L. Cash, Charles Edward Cash and Tony Lee Cash, all of Luray, Jeffrey Cash, New Market, and Douglas Edward Cash, Buena Vista; two brothers, Robert S. "Budger" Campbell, Front Royal, and Hubert F. "Hump" Campbell, Luray; a sister, Catherine Campbell, Luray; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Pastor Frank Painter will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. Monday at Antioch Independent Bible Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Choice Shelter, Inc., 216 W. George Gainer
George Gainer, 77, Winston, Ga., and formerly of New Market, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Vencor Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. The funeral is tentatively scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday in New Market. Complete arrangements will be announced by Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market.

Patricia H. Sterling
Patricia H. Sterling, age 70, of Hallwood, Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at the home of her son. Born in Sharpsburg, Md., she was the daughter of the late Walter Scott and Deva Elizabeth Hopkins. Mrs. Sterling was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Salisbury and the Moose Lodge Ladies Auxiliary in Exmore, Va. She is survived by her husband, Wendell Sterling of Hallwood; four children and their spouses, Rick and Cathy Gilkerson of Kansas City, Mo., Suzy and Steve Benedict of Salisbury, Joe and Ann Gilkerson of Parsonsburg and Tony and Donna Gilkerson of Salisbury; three grandchildren, Chris and Joey Gilkerson and Brooke Benedict; one brother, Hugh H. Hopkins of Harrisonburg, Va.; one nephew, Tony Hopkins and one niece, Tina Hopkins and her beloved dachshund, Schnitzel. A funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Williams Funeral Home in Onancock, Va., where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Albert Crockett will officiate. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Onancock. If desired, contributions may be made in her memory to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Ethel M. Reese
Ethel Marie Reese, 66, of Salisbury, N.C., died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at her home following an extended illness. She was born March 23, 1935, in Harrisonburg, and was the daughter of the late Frances Deaver Erickson and Walter P. Erickson. She graduated from Broadway High School in 1953 and was a retired seamstress in the clothing manufacturing industry. She was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include a son, Ricky L. Tutwiler of Richfield, N.C.; three daughters, Sandra Barnette and Brenda Tutwiler Brown, both of Salisbury, N.C., and Tammie S. Shifflett of Harrisonburg; a brother, Glendon Deavers of Singers Glen; six grandchildren, including Justin Tutwiler, who was raised in the home; and seven step-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. tonight at Evergreen Cremation Services, 650 Industrial Ave., Salisbury, N.C., where visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight. Frances E. Price
Frances Elaine Price of Juneau, Alaska, died Nov. 16, 2001, at home. She was born Aug. 18, 1921, in Murdo, S.D., and was a daughter of the late Col. Raymond Templin Benson and Margaret Thompson Benson of Harrisonburg. She spent her youth in Sheldon and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, attended Coe College and graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in textiles and design in 1943. She joined the Navy WAVES and was an aerial gunnery instructor, Sp.G 3rd class, from 1943 to 1945. She was married to a naval aviator from 1945 to 1972 and lived in Venezuela, the Philippines, Morocco and Spain, as well as in several parts of the United States. She attended Madison College, now James Madison University, and retired as a librarian from JMU in 1985. She lived in Harrisonburg from 1972 to 1991, when she moved to Juneau to be with her daughter, where she had lived for the past 10 months. She is survived by a brother, Rush Benson, Gettysburg, Pa.; a sister, Marilynn Ratajczak, Cleveland Heights, Ohio; two daughters, Lynn Wallen, Juneau, and Margaret Carlson, Tarpon Springs, Fla.; a son, Raymond Price, New South Wales, Australia; and 13 nieces and nephews. At her request, no local service will be held. Her life will be celebrated at a family reunion in July 2002.

Kathleen E. Waugh
Kathleen Elizabeth Waugh, 76, of Barber Shop Lane near Elkton, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mrs. Waugh was born May 8, 1925, in Berkley Springs, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late Elmer C. and Eva Youngblood Lopp. She graduated from Dominion Business College and was a secretary for United Way and the Department of Forestry at the George Washington National Forest. Following her retirement, she helped in Elkton at the E.A.U.S. and was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church. She is survived by a son, William "Danny" Waugh of Elkton; two daughters, Judith L. Lyles of Elkton, and Elizabeth C. Arbogast of Broadway; two sisters, Irene Stone and Nina Moore; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. The Rev. David Reynolds will conduct the funeral at 11 a.m. Friday at the Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home in Elkton. Burial will follow at the Elk Run Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Edith R. Payne
Edith Roberta Payne, 85, of 414 Broad St., Harrisonburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg following a short illness. Funeral arrangements were pending Wednesday night at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Ashby J. Ennis Sr.
Ashby James Ennis Sr., 83, of Bergton, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mr. Ennis was born May 28, 1918, in Cotlett, and was a son of the late James Wallace and Mary Lottie May Ennis. He was employed at Shenandoah Telephone Company and was a farmer. He was a member of Valley View Mennonite Church and attended Damascus Church of the Brethren in Bergton. He was an Army veteran of World War II. On Sept. 19, 1937, he married the former M. Ruby Hottinger, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Geraldine Hartman of Bergton; three sons, Ashby J. Ennis Jr. of Honolulu, Hawaii, Lynn E. Ennis of Criders and Douglas R. Ennis of Timberville; a sister, Jane Brown of Penngrove, N.J.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The Revs. Michael Shenk and Claude Reynold Simmons Jr. will conduct the funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday at Damascus Church of the Brethren. Burial will be in the Caplinger Cemetery in Criders. E. Ruth Cullers
E. Ruth Martinson Cullers, 79, of Church Street in Broadway, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mrs. Cullers was born April 20, 1922, in Maskell, Neb., and was the daughter of the late Clarence Samuel and Edith Davis Martinson. She was a homemaker and a member of the Lutheran Church. On Feb. 19, 1946, she married Marvin L. Cullers, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Phyllis and Mary Cullers, both of Broadway; a son, Cletus Cullers of Timberville; two stepgrandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. The Rev. Jeff Butcher will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway, where the family will receive friends following the service. Burial will be at Maskell Cemetery, Maskell, Neb. Ida D. Hedrick
Ida Darmon Kile Hedrick, 88, of Petersburg, W.Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Grant County Nursing Home, where she had lived since Nov. 7. Mrs. Hedrick was born Jan. 7, 1913, in Landes, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late George Washington Kile and Mary Elizabeth Greenwalt Kile. She was a member of the Gordon Chapel United Methodist Church in Landes, W.Va. Her husband, Brook E. Hedrick, preceded her in death on May 8, 1982. She is survived by three sons, Gene C. Kile, Darmon E. Hedrick and Brook Junior Hedrick, all of Petersburg, W.Va.; a daughter, Sandra S. Harris of Woodstock; 18 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. The Rev. Gary Phillips will conduct the funeral at 11 a.m. Friday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg, W.Va. Burial will be at South Branch Valley Memorial Gardens in Petersburg. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. A memorial service for Gertrude W. Irvine of Harrisonburg will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Massanutten Presbyterian Church in Penn Laird. Mrs. Irvine died Nov. 29, 2001.

Sinia J. Collier
Sinia Jane Collier, 88, of Harrisonburg, and formerly of Elkton, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. She had lived at Avante at Harrisonburg for the past 15 years. Mrs. Collier was born April 13, 1913, in Greene County, and was the daughter of the late Bouford and Annie Betty Johnson. She was raised by her grandmother, Georgia Shifflett in Greene County. She was a homemaker and an active member of the Elkton Pentecostal Church. Her husband of over 60 years, George Herman Collier, preceded her in death on March 8, 1992. She is survived by three daughters, Virginia Fulk of Harrisonburg, and Lorraine Lawson and Sylvia Gooden, both of Elkton; a half sister, Eva Browman of Dyke; four grandchildren; and six-great-grandchildren. Pastor Kinzy Reed will conduct the funeral at 2 p.m. Friday at the Elkton Pentecostal Church. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight at the Elkton Pentecostal Church. Arrangements are by the Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home in Elkton.

Floyd J. Wingfield Jr.
The Rev. Floyd Jackson "F.J." Wingfield Jr., 71, of Forest, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001. Rev. Wingfield was born Sept. 8, 1930, in Lynchburg, and was a son of the late Rev. Floyd Jackson Wingfield Sr. and Annie Mae Lawrence Wingfield. He served the Virginia United Methodist Conference for over 44 years as a pastor in United Methodist churches throughout Virginia. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and a member of American Legion Post 16 in Lynchburg. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Coffey Wingfield; two sisters, Helen W. Tanner of Gladys, Va., and Kathryn W. Carwile of Roanoke; and four brothers, the Rev. Arthur W. Wingfield of Roanoke, the Rev. Lawrence A. Wingfield of Charlottesville, the Rev. Wayne O. Wingfield of High Point, N.C., and the Rev. Stephen R. Wingfield of Mount Crawford. The Revs. Stephen R. Wingfield and Randall Blankenship will conduct the funeral at 11 a.m. Friday at Main Street United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. ant 7-9 p.m. today at Carder-Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford. Kenneth E. Massie
Kenneth Edward Massie, 58, of 233 George Home Road, Waynesboro, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Mr. Massie was born July 26, 1944, in Augusta County, and was a son of the late Lester W. and Mary Lillian Holbert Massie. He was a distributor for Flowers Bakery for 27 years. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Lee Massie, and his stepmother, Rachel Johnson Massie. Surviving are his wife, Valeria "Jeannie" Massie; two daughters, Suzanne Rene Massie Alkhire of Hagerstown, Md., and Jessica Massie at home; a son, Michael E. Massie of Waynesboro; four sisters, Doris Ott of Stuarts Draft, Midred Garland of Fishersville, Sarah Robertson of Stuarts Draft, and Sandra M. Conner of Waynesboro; three brothers, Alvin H. Massie and Johnnie W. Massie, both of Waynesboro, and Donnie S. Massie of Staunton; three step-brothers, Thomas Johnson, Andrew Johnson, and Grover C. Johnson Jr.; four grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. The Revs. Stanley Belcher and William R. Freeman will conduct the funeral 2:30 p.m. Thursday at McDow Funeral Home in Waynesboro. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Violet H. Schan
Violet "Vi" Hudson Haley Schan of Quail Ridge, Boynton Beach, Fla., passed away after a long illness on June 3, 2003. Born in Linden, Ind., on July 29, 1915, she was one of six children of Raymond and Daisy Hudson. After graduating from State Teachers College in Terre Haute, Ind., she taught school for several years. In 1959, she became a realtor in Pompano Beach, Fla., and shortly thereafter, was instrumental in organizing the Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach Board of Realtors and held several leadership positions. She owned a real estate office in Lighthouse Point, Fla., for several years. She was predeceased by her first husband, Arthur F. Haley in 1969. Her second husband, William A. Schan, passed away in 2001. Surviving are two brothers, Kenneth Hudson and Boyd Hudson of Crawfordsville, Ind. Also surviving are three children, Judi Bell and her husband, Dutch Bell of Boynton Beach, Bud Haley and his wife, Patty Haley of Franklin, N.C., and Corky Cheshire of Gainesville, Fla.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Among the grandchildren are Tonia Simmons, Tracy Moats and Don Bell. The great-grandchildren are Erica Simmons Maddox, Tyler Simmons, Erin Simmons, Travis Moats, Haley Moats, Jared Bell and Maggie Bell, all of Bridgewater, Va. The family is deeply grateful for her loving caregivers, Doreen Gayle Black, who was with her for seven years and Marie Gillion. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church oc Boynton Beach, 235 SW Sixth Ave. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice by the Sea, 1531 W. Palmetto Park Road, Boca Raton, Fla., 33486 or to the charity of your choice.

Eleanor M. Cooper
Mrs. Eleanor Marie Crider Cooper, 81, of 301 Ohio Ave., Harrisonburg, departed this life Sunday, June 8, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She was the loving wife of Pascal Wilson "Jim" Cooper for 60 years. Mrs. Cooper was born on March 3, 1922, in Fulks Run, Va., the daughter of the late Samuel A. and Grace Wittig Crider. She was an active member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church, where she assisted in the church nursery for many years and was an active member of the Adult Sunday school class. She also belonged to the Crestview Garden Club, a bridge club, and was an avid fisherman. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Ann Cooper Allison and her husband, Charles M. "Chuck" Allison Jr. of Goode, Va.; her son, Gregory W. Cooper of Englewood, Colo.; and three granddaughters, Stefanie Marie Erb, Sarah Elizabeth Erb, and Rebecca Ann Allison. Also surviving are one sister, Susie Crider Mason and her husband, Walter; one brother, Lester Gratton Crider; three sisters-in-law, Frances Crider, Lilly Crider and Alma Crider; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at Otterbein United Methodist Church with the Revs. Glen Langston and Don Fridinger officiating. A reception will follow the service in the fellowship hall, where the family will receive friends. There will be no viewing or visitation at the funeral home. Friends may call at the residence at any time. A graveside service for the family will be held Thursday at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.
