Goldie N. Garion
Goldie Naomi Houchen Garion, 88, North Liberty Street, Harrisonburg, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Garion was born June 25, 1915, in Harrisonburg and was the daughter of the late William L. and Lilly Howdyshell Houchen.
She lived the majority of her life in the Harrisonburg area, except for about 20 years when she lived in Alexandria. She attended the Brethren Church and was a member of the Woodmen of the World. She was employed by Metro Pants before retiring.
On March 30, 1977, she married Claude W. Garion, who preceded her in death on Feb. 25, 1987.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, and is survived by two nieces and two nephews.
Pastor James M. Beckwith will conduct the graveside funeral 11 a.m. today at the Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg.
Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg is in charge on arrangements.

Altie M. Dove
Altie Mary Dove, 71, Blue Hole Road, Bergton, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Dove was born July 25, 1932, in Rockingham County, and was a daughter of the late Edna Mongold.
She was a homemaker and attended Calvary Baptist Church in Timberville.
Surviving are a son, Randy E. Dove of Bergton; and stepfather, Howard Mongold of Bergton.
The Rev. Guy Ferrell will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Saturday at the Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Caplinger Cemetery in Criders.

Willie C. Wimer
Willie Clinton "Clint" Wimer, 92, Cherry Grove, W.Va., died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Nella s Nursing Home in Crystal Springs, W.Va.
Mr. Wimer was born Feb. 24, 1911, in Hunting Ground, W.Va., and was the son of the late Tiberius Wimer and Cora Ellen Thompson Wimer.
He was a farmer, a retired mail carrier and a school bus driver for Pendleton County Schools. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a past member of Spruce Knob VFW Post No. 2370 and a Methodist by faith.
On June 9, 1945, he married Ethel Jane Vandevander Wimer, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Curtis G. Wimer of Parsons, W.Va., and two grandsons.
The Rev. Stanley Kile will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin, W.Va. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin, W.Va., with graveside military services conducted by members of the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Evelyn K. Mumaw
Evelyn K. Mumaw, 83, Harrisonburg, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Crestwood of VMRC where she had lived for the past few months.
Mrs. Mumaw was born Nov. 28, 1919, in Royersford, Pa., and was the daughter of the late Irvin J. and Cora Shank King.
She received a bachelor s degree in religious education from Eastern Mennonite College in 1951 and a master s in education from Madison College in 1961. She served as the Dean of Women at Eastern Mennonite College, now Eastern Mennonite University, until 1968. She served as president and vice president of the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community Auxiliary for four years and was a member of the board of directors at Pleasant View Homes for 10 years. For nine years, she served as a book reviewer.
She was a writer and authored several books, including "Woman Alone," "More Like Jesus," "A Journey Through Grief," and "The Merging." She also wrote numerous articles for church papers and historical magazines. She was a member of the Shenandoah Valley Mennonite Historians and was an active member of the Dayton Mennonite Church, where she served on various committees.
In June 1965, she married John R. Mumaw, who preceded her in death on June 20, 1993.
Surviving are four stepdaughters, Grace Mumaw of Harrisonburg, Catherine Mumaw of Corvallis, Ore., Lois Martin of Lancaster, Pa., and Miriam Mumaw of Arlington; a brother, Aaron King of Harrisonburg; three sisters, Cora King of Harrisonburg, Laura Ramer of Myerstown, Pa., and Almeda Stoltfus of Paraguay; six stepgrandchildren, 14 step-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pastor Daryl Driver will conduct the graveside service 11 a.m. Monday in the Lindale Mennonite Church Cemetery. Pastors James Rhodes, Nate Yoder and Bill Green will conduct a memorial service 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Dayton Mennonite Church.

Mamie B. Donovan
Mamie Byers Donovan, 99, 3263 Ralston Road, Harrisonburg, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Donovan was born Oct. 24, 1903, in the Mountain Valley area of Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late John and Irene Taylor Pennington.
She worked as a seamstress at Metro Pants for 42 years. She was a member of the Mount Clinton Church of God and attended Greenmount Church of the Brethren.
In January 1919, she married Joseph E. Donovan, who preceded her in death on Jan. 29, 1968.
Surviving are a daughter, Helen Knupp of Harrisonburg; a foster son, Raymond Donovan of Harrisonburg; two children raised in the Donovan Home, Ethel Mae Conley of Fulks Run and David Donovan of Harrisonburg; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
The Revs. Ken Dolan and Robert Mizelfelt will conduct the funeral 3 p.m. Saturday at the Greenmount Church of the Brethren. Burial will be in the Mount Clinton Cemetery.

George A. Wratchford
George Allen Wratchford, 75, Moorefield, W.Va., died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, W.Va.
Mr. Wratchford was born Oct. 18, 1927, in Moorefield, W.Va., and was the son of the late Glen G. Wratchford and Sarah Pearl Newbrough Wratchford.
He was a retired Rockingham Poultry employee and a rural mail carrier. He was a member of the Moorefield Church of the Brethren and a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and Korea. He was a lifetime member of Moorefield American Legion, VFW, 40 and 8 Club, a member of Moorefield Veteran s Honor Guard and past commander of VFW.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Wratchford of Moorefield, W.Va.; a sister, Darlene Shockey of Moorefield, W.Va.; four brothers, Charles Wratchford of Andalusia, Ala., Wayne Wratchford of Enterprise, Ala., Donald Wratchford of Wardensville, W.Va., and Roger Wratchford of Aberdeen, Md., and several nieces and nephews.
Pastor Harold Garber will conduct the funeral 3 p.m. Sunday at the Moorefield Church of the Brethren. Burial will be in the Olivet Cemetery, with military graveside rites performed by the Moorefield Veteran s Honor Guard.

Ernest W. Fogle
Ernest W. "Jake" Fogle, 73, of Brookeville, Md., and formerly of Hardy County, W.Va., died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, Md.
Mr. Fogle was born July 2, 1930, in Lost City, W.Va., and was the son of the late Paul C. and Mabel E. Bott Fogle.
He was a member of Howard County Antique Club, Local No. 77 Operating Engineers of Washington, D.C., and Jennings Chapel Church.
He is survived by his wife, Alma B. Fogle; two daughters, Nancy Cumberland of Woodbine, Md., and Donna Dodson of Gettysburg, Pa.; two sisters, Jean Teets of Lost River, W.Va., and Karen Swisher of Albermarle, N.C.; and five grandchildren.

Dorothy Marie Breeden, 59, of Elkton, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Paige F. Nash
Paige Figgatt Nash, 82, of Harrisonburg, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at her home.
Mrs. Nash was born Dec. 27, 1920, in Harrisonburg, and was the daughter of the late Stanley T. and Amelia Loewner Figgatt.
She lived in the Harrisonburg area all of her life and graduated from Harrisonburg High School. She was a homemaker and enjoyed caring for her grandchildren.
On Oct. 10, 1945, she married Irvin F. Nash, who preceded her in death April 25, 1999.
She is survived by two sons, Darryl Wayne Nash of Harrisonburg, and Gregory Keith Nash of Atlanta, Ga.; a foster son, Michael Lee Ellis of Harrisonburg; and four grandchildren.
Mr. Erwin Helbraun will conduct a graveside service 11 a.m. today at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

Charles A. Wilfong Jr.
Charles Adam Wilfong Jr., of Sumter, S.C., died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at his home.
Mr. Wilfong was born in Harrisonburg, Va., and was a son of the late Ruth Clayton and Charles Adam Wilfong Sr.
He retired from the USAF as a Master Sgt. He graduated from the University of South Carolina and was an avid watercolorist. He was a member of the Sumter Artist Guild.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Takako Inuzuka Wilfong.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Detrich Wilfong; two sons, Charles Michael Wilfong of Sumter and Robert Gregory Wilfong of Metaire, La.; a stepson, Seven Lee Cornish of Smyrna, Ga.; a daughter, Patricia Ann Wilfong Kunich of Newport News; a stepdaughter, Lori Ann Lloyd of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a sister, Cheryl Wilfong Will of Fort Defiance; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. today at the Church of the Holy Cross with the Rev. Richard B. Archer officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parish hall.

Mortimer W. Gamble IV
Mortimer W. "Bunkie" Gamble IV, 74, of S. Elm Street, Moorefield, W.Va., died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at his home.
Mr. Gamble was born March 16, 1929, in Morgantown, W.Va., and was the son of the late Mortimer W. Gamble III and Virgie Ireland Gamble.
He graduated from Moorefield High School and West Virginia University, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and the WVU Alumni Association. He was a retired senior engineering technician for the West Virginia Department of Highways and was a member of the Moorefield City Council. He was a member of the Moorefield Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon, a member of the senior choir and a teacher in the Men s Bible Class.
Mr. Gamble was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was a platoon leader and company commander. He was a life member of the John M. Golliday Post No. 64 American Legion and the Denney-Moyers-Pratt Post No. 9606 VFW. He was also a member of the 40 & 8 Voiture No. 1535 and Company No. 582 Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was a member of the Olivet Cemetery Board, Hardy County Health Department, Moorefield Sanitary Board, Love Memorial Clinic and Region VIII Health Advisory Committee.
On Aug. 19, 1950, he married Elaine Cole, who preceded him in death March 9, 1997.
He is survived by two sons, Dr. Mortimer W. Gamble V of Fairmont, W.Va., and David Cole Gamble of Owings Mills, Md.; and a sister, Carmen Silliman of Moorefield, W.Va.
Pastor Braxton Garriss and the Rev. Randy Ours will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Thursday at the Moorefield Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at the Olivet Cemetery with military rites by the U.S. Army and the Moorefield Veteran s Honor Guard.

Janet H. Conrad
Mrs. Janet Harper Conrad, 86, of Fort Seybert, W.Va., died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin, W.Va.
She was born Feb. 7, 1917, at Riverton, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late Wilber W. Harper and Margie E. Teter Harper.
She attended Berea College in Kentucky and graduated from Shepherd College. She was a teacher at Franklin Elementary School. She also served as West Virginia University s extension agent in Pendleton County. During her tenure as extension agent, she created the Golden Age Newsletter, which was distributed throughout West Virginia. She was a member of the Fairview-Bethel United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a 50-year plus member of the Extension Homemakers Club and was a member of the WV Farm Bureau. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
On Aug. 17, 1938, she married William Harrison Conrad, who preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 1997.
Surviving are two sons, H. Stephen Conrad and his wife, Jane, of Fort Seybert, W.Va., Dr. Daniel H. Conrad and his wife, Odessa, of Midlothian, Va.; two granddaughters, Kelly Elizabeth Marsh of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Dawn Suzanne Conrad of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Mary Lee Eye of Franklin, W.Va.; and two brothers, Elwood N. Harper of Lilian, Ala., and Kenneth R. Harper of Franklin, W.Va.
She was preceded in death by one son, James William Conrad, two sisters, Freida Dunkle and Christina Harper, and four brothers, Wilbur Harper, Bardon Harper, George Harper and Paul Harper.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at Fairview-Bethel United Methodist Church at Fort Seybert, W.Va. Burial will be at the Fairview-Bethel Church Cemetery at Fort Seybert.

Gazel C. Moomaw
Gazel C. Moomaw, 101, of Orkney Springs, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Our Shenandoah Home in Timberville, where she had lived since November 2002.
Mrs. Moomaw was born June 10, 1902, in Orkney Springs, and was the daughter of the late James M. and Elizabeth Estep Funkhouser.
She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity (Powder Springs) United Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday school for 50 years.
On Aug. 30, 1924, she married Otis Moomaw, who preceded her in death Dec. 7, 1989.
Mrs. Moomaw was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by a nephew, Fred G. Funkhouser of New Market, whom she raised.
The Rev. John Ware will conduct the funeral 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity (Powder Springs) United Church of Christ. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Virgie D. Bennett, 91, of Franklin, W.Va., died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, W.Va.
Mrs. Bennett was born May 7, 1912, in Zigler, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late William McKendree Lambert and Pearlie Etta Moyers Lambert.
She was a cook at Smithfield Grill in Franklin and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 73 years.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dennie Herman Hartman, and her second husband, Fred Green Bennett.
She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Helen Lantz of Penn Laird, and Ruth Allene Warner of Franklin, W.Va.; a stepdaughter, Ruth Mallow of Clearville, Pa.; a son, Franklin Delano Hartman of Timberville; a stepson, Roy E. Hartman of Cherry Grove, W.Va.; three sisters, Catherine Smith of Franklin, W.Va., Retha Radavoich of Baltimore, and Dessie Witt of McKees Rocks, Pa.; three brothers, Leslie Lambert, Edwin Hartman and Charles Hartman, all of Franklin, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

Max R. Ruddle
Max Rubin Ruddle, 87, of Lincolnton, Ga., and formerly of Franklin, W.Va., died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at Lake Crossing Health Center in Appling, Ga.
Mr. Ruddle was born Nov. 15, 1915, in Deer Run, W.Va., and was the son of Isaac Saylor and Verna Catherine Smith Ruddle.
He was a member of the Morningside Baptist Church in Lincolnton, Ga. He was a World War II Army veteran and served in North Africa, the Middle East and Italy. Mr. Ruddle was the former owner of Ruddle Lumber and Flooring Company in Franklin, W.Va., and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
His wife, Pauline Wiseman Ruddle, preceded him in death.
He is survived by three daughters, Karen Zahniser of Valdosta, Ga., Gloria Vitti of Alpharetta, Ga. and Debbie Wade of Lincolnton, Ga.; three sisters, Ruth Dolly of Waco, Texas, Kitty Hammer of Franklin, W.Va. and Betty Heavner of Harrisonburg; a brother, Joe R. Ruddle of Edgewater, Md.; two grandsons; three stepgrandsons; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The Revs. Albert Stroup and Larry O. Martin conducted the funeral at Morningside Baptist Church in Lincolnton, Ga. Burial was at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens in Thomson, Ga.

George W. Branson
George Webster Branson, 82, of Baker, W.Va., died Friday, July 2, 2004, at the United Hospital Center in Clarksburg, W.Va.
Mr. Branson was born Jan. 25, 1922, in Lost River, W.Va., and was a son of the late Harper L. Branson and Freddie Webster Branson.
He was a poultry and dairy farmer and a member of the Hardy County Rural Development Authority.
Survivors include his wife, Luann Arnold Branson; a daughter, Deidra B. Thorne of Bridgeport, W.Va.; a son, George L. Branson of Broadway; three sisters, Alice Hartman of Franklin, W.Va., Eleanor Dove of Virginia Beach and Betty Wolfe of Moorefield, W.Va.; two brothers, John Branson of Baker, W.Va. and William L. Branson of Norfolk; and five grandchildren.
The Rev. Jonathan L. Hedrick will conduct a memorial service 2 p.m. Monday at the McKee Funeral Home in Baker, W.Va. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Donald L. Horne
Mr. Donald Lyncoln Horne, 74, of 3658 Cricket Lane, Dayton, died Sunday evening, Aug. 15, 2004, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He had been ill for the past two weeks.
A son of the late Walter M. Horne and Verna LaForme Horne, he was born July 16, 1930, in Skowhegan, Maine.
He attended the University of Maine. He lived in Dayton for the last 30 years, where he was a self-employed builder. After retirement, he and his wife spent several years in Florida and then returned to Dayton. He attended Montezuma Church of the Brethren and was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and the Elks Lodge.
On June 4, 1951, he married the love of his life, Gloria Roy Horne, who survives.
Also surviving besides his wife, are two daughters, Brenda Morrow and husband, Rick, of Fredericksburg, Libby Kiser and husband, Rick, of Bridgewater; five (beloved) grandchildren, Jonathan, Nathaniel, and Joshua Morrow, and Christopher and Jennifer Kiser.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert J. Horne.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at Montezuma Church of the Brethren at 7 p.m. with Pastor James M. Beckwith officiating. A private graveside service will be held earlier at the Dayton Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Horne residence at anytime and the family will receive friends after the memorial service.

Albert C. Freeman
The Rev. Albert C. Freeman of Roanoke, Va., passed away Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at Roanoke United Methodist Home in Roanoke, Va.
He was born in Phoenixville, Pa., and was a son of the late Albert Charles and Lottie Rixtine Freeman.
He was predeceased in death by his wife, Ruth Mildred Freeman, a brother, Price Freeman and sister, Dorothy Williams.
Rev. Freeman was a graduate of Moravian College and Seminary, Bethlehem, Pa., Crazer Seminary of Chester, Pa. He served as pastor for 57 years in Newark, N.J., Irvington, N.J. and Harrisonburg, Va.
Rev. Freeman was a Master Mason in the Masonic Lodge No. 33, New Jersey for 65 years.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Donald Schneider of Roanoke; grandchildren, Curtis and Jean Schneider of Roanoke, Wendy and Mark Jones of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Scott Schneider of Clearwater, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Kristen Jones, Kyle Jones and Sarah Schneider; and his sister, Jayne Smith of Maine.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at St. Michael s United Church of Christ in Bridgewater, Va. with the Rev. Harry Hall officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church following the service.
