Ruth H. Whitmore
Ruth H. Whitmore, 95, of Harrisonburg, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at Oak Lea Nursing Home in Harrisonburg. Mrs. Whitmore was born Jan. 24, 1909, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of the late Fred and Willie Vint Hess. She graduated valedictorian from Mount Clinton Academy. She was a devoted member of Mount Horeb United Methodist Church, where she was the music director for over 50 years. On Feb. 6, 1937, she married Ira J. Whitmore, who preceded her in death Oct. 21, 1982. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. The Rev. Bill John will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Monday at Mount Horeb United Methodist Church in Hinton. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at the McMullen Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Fern M. Brunk
Mrs. Fern Maust Brunk, 71, of Harrisonburg, died at Oak Lea Nursing Home on Friday morning Dec. 3, 2004. She was born on Jan. 30, 1933, in Michigan, and was the daughter of the late Richard and Elizabeth Gunden Maust. She was a homemaker and a member of Park View Mennonite Church. Mrs. Brunk and her husband, Perry, were loyal supporters of Eastern Mennonite University, Eastern Mennonite High School, Laurelville Mennonite Church Center and Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. They enjoyed a passion for world travel, music, and hospitality. Her husband, Perry Brunk, preceded her in death. She is survived by six children, Sylvia Joy Brunk Reece and husband, Michael, of New Holland, Pa., Randall Brunk and wife, Elizabeth, of Crownsville, Md., Steven Brunk and wife, Cathryn, of University Park, Md., Janette Brunk of Weyers Cave, Christina von Rotz-Brunk and husband, Urs of Harrisonburg, Anthony Brunk of Greenbelt, Md.; eight grandchildren, Brian Reece, Kevin Reece, Emily Brunk, Mary Katherine Brunk, Bridgette Brunk, David Brunk, Bradley Brunk, Christopher Brunk; a sister, Josephine Musser of Port Republic; two brothers, Clayton Maust of Harrisonburg, and Wilbur Maust of Waterloo, Ontario. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at Park View Mennonite Church with Pastor Phil Kniss officiating. The family will receive friends at the church fellowship hall on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Laurelville Mennonite Church Center in Mount Pleasant, PA or VMRC in her memory. Earl T. Miller
Earl Thomas "Buck" Miller, 81, of Harrisonburg, passed away Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Born April 3, 1923, in Penn Laird, he was a son of the late George Thomas and Eleanor Gibson Miller. Mr. Miller was a United States Army veteran, a member of VFW Post 632, and had attended the West Side Baptist Church in Harrisonburg. He had previously been employed as a car salesman with Myers Ford, Royal Motors and Wheatley-Yetzer Ford. He later opened North Main Motors and B&C Auto Discount. He was united in marriage on June 7, 1947, to Elsie Mastin, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Fred E. Miller and wife, Mildred, of Verona, Ralph E. Miller and wife, Pam, of Pleasant Valley, Donald E. Miller and wife, Brenda, of Broadway; one sister, Ethel Carpenter of Harrisonburg; six grandchildren, Amy Miller, Tony Miller, Christopher Rexrode, Sherrie Miller, Joseph Knott and Sheila Davis; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Miller was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth E. Miller, one daughter, Joan E. Miller, one brother, James Miller, and two sisters, Lottie Kennedy and Carrie Foley. The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with the Rev. Charles Anderson and Rev. Paul White officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at the funeral home. Charles O. Brown
Charles Owen "C.O." Brown, 81, of Harrisonburg, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at Oak Lea Nursing Home in Harrisonburg. Mr. Brown was born March 15, 1923, in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Marcellus L. and Clara Showalter Brown. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a cattle farmer. He was a member of the Mount Clinton United Methodist Church and the Valley Saddle Club in Singers Glen. On June 30, 1946, he married Gladys Sipe, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Phyllis B. Miller, Gloria B. Price and Jacalyn B. Strunk, all of Harrisonburg; a brother, Sam Brown of Harrisonburg; a sister, Louise Whiteside of Shenandoah and seven grandchildren. The Rev. Kenneth DeWitt will conduct the funeral 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Mount Clinton United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Mount Horeb Cemetery in Hinton. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Sunday at the church. Arrangements are by the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

B. Elizabeth S. Hays
B. Elizabeth Sensabaugh Hays, 74, of 335 Skyview Circle in Verona, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Mrs. Hays was born Feb. 27, 1930, in Spottswood, and was a daughter of John Luther and Myrtle Elizabeth Stoner Sensabaugh. Survivors include her husband, Elwood Martin Hays Sr.; a son, Elwood Martin Hays Jr. of Verona; a daughter, Carol Jean Wease of Staunton; a brother, John William Sensabaugh of Mount Sidney; and a sister, Helen Virginia Sensabaugh Knott of Waynesboro. The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at the Mount Sidney United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.

Lloyd E. Hartman
Lloyd Eugene Hartman, 76, of Orchard Drive in Timberville, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at his home. Mr. Hartman was born April 11, 1928, in Mathias, W.Va., and was a son of the late Clyde Boyd and Grace Virginia Reynolds. He was employed at Wampler Longacre before retiring. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Chimney Rock VFW Post No. 9660. On Nov. 20, 1954, he married the former Una Whetzel, who survives. He is also survived by a son, David Hartman of Timberville; a stepson, Richard Whetzel of Fulks Run; a stepdaughter, Barbara Whetzel of Weyers Cave; a brother, Boyd N. Hartman of Broadway; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Cedar Run Cemetery near Broadway. Arrangements are by the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.

Phillip E. Childs
Phillip Eugene Childs, 59, of Elm Street in Broadway, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, in Aiken, S.C., as the result of an accident at his jobsite. Mr. Childs was born Dec. 21, 1945, in Michigan, and was a son of the late Kenneth and Marjorie Granger Childs. He graduated from Maple Valley High School in Vermontville, Mich., and was a member of Victory Baptist Church. He was a contractor and a stockholder of Specialty Industries Inc. On June 11, 1965, he married the former Jama Joan Boyer, who preceded him in death Oct. 5, 1993. On Feb. 14, 1998, he married the former Sheri Lee Dunsmore, who survives. He is also survived by two sons, Shannon Childs of Handover, Pa., and Kevin Childs of Hagerstown, Md.; two daughters, Rebecca "Becky" Sullivan of Elkton, and Kathryn "Katie" Fidler of Broadway; two sisters, Lynette Childs of Fort Myers Beach Fla., and Ruth Ann Collier of Vermontville, Mich.; a brother, David Childs of Georgetown, Ky.; four grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren. Pastor J. Bruce Murray will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Monday at Victory Baptist Church in Harrisonburg. Burial will be in the Linville Creek Cemetery in Broadway. The family will receive friends from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway. Charles D. Wine Sr.
Charles David Wine Sr., 77, of Harrisonburg, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at his home. Funeral arrangements were pending Friday night at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Fern W. Connolly
Fern Washburn Connolly, 84, of 69 Chestnut Ave. in Craigsville, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at her home. Mrs. Connolly was born June 15, 1920, in Pennsylvania, and was a daughter of the late Ellery and Claire Wheeler Washburn. She was a clerk for the U.S. government. She moved to Craigsville in 1998 from Alexandria and was a member of Craigsville United Methodist Church. Her husband, Patrick Connolly, preceded her in death Aug. 26, 1995. She is survived by two sons, Myron Cook of Craigsville, and Raymond Cook of Faber; a stepdaughter, Kathleen A. Connolly and a stepson, James C. Connolly, both of Alexandria; a brother, Lloyd Washburn of Shinglehouse, Pa.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Her body will be cremated at the Lindsey Cremation Chapel in Harrisonburg. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.

Jonah R. Kitchen
Jonah Renee Kitchen, infant son of Tania Nicole Lam Kitchen and James Vernon Kitchen Jr., 2341 Mosley Street, Waynesboro, passed away peacefully in Mommy and Daddy s arms at the University of Virginia Medical Center Wednesday evening Feb. 9, 2005. Jonah was born on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He was preceded in death by maternal great-grandparents, Henry William and Nannie Lam, paternal great-grandparents, Chester and Maye Kitchen, and paternal great-grandmother, Sarah Brown. In addition to his parents, survivors include maternal grandparents, John and Wanda Lam of Elkton, paternal grandparents, James and Susie Kitchen of Lynchburg, maternal great-grandparents, Earman and Marie Shifflett of Elkton, an uncle, Michael Lam of Elkton, and uncle and aunt, Jeffrey and Jenni Kitchen of Staunton. A private graveside service will be conducted Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at Augusta Memorial Park by Pastor Pat Velanzon. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jonah s memory to the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit at the University of Virginia Children s Hospital, P.O. Box 3446, Charlottesville, VA 22903. Reynolds Funeral Service of Waynesboro is handling arrangements.

Ava B. Mongold
Ava Burkholder Mongold, 87, of 436 W. Bruce St. in Harrisonburg, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at her home. Mrs. Mongold was born May 20, 1917, in Rockingham County, and was a daughter of the late John N. and Elsie Maude Burkholder. She lived her entire life in Harrisonburg, where she graduated from high school. She was a saleslady for Alfred Neys before retiring and was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church. Her husband, Harvey Mongold, preceded her in death. She is survived by a daughter, Margaret Cassidy; a son, John Mongold; and a sister, Ivy Painter, all of Harrisonburg; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The Rev. Tom Holden will conduct a private graveside service at Woodbine Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Wayne E. Weaver
Corporal Wayne E. Weaver, 65, of Kelly Road in Mount Jackson, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at his home. Mr. Weaver was born May 29, 1939, in Forestville, and was a son of the late Norman E. Weaver and Ethel Lutz Weaver of Mount Jackson. He was a former manager at Wolfkill Vault Company and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of St. Mark s Lutheran Church. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Annalee H. Weaver; a daughter, Deborah Ann Duncan of Fort Laura, Wash.; a sister, Judy Painter of Timberville; two brothers, Jerry Weaver of Mount Jackson and Fred Weaver of Edinburg; a half brother, Steve Weaver of Mount Jackson; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Pastor George R. Feldman will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at Valley Funeral Chapel at Bowmans Crossing. There will be no visitation. Burial will be at the Forestville Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

John W. Reynolds Jr.
John William Reynolds Jr., 50, of Edinburg, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, as the result of an automobile accident. Mr. Reynolds was born July 18, 1954, in Woodstock, and was a son of the late John William Reynolds Sr. and Hilda Virginia Green Reynolds. He was employed at Howell Metal Company in New Market. Survivors include his wife, Sheilah Diane Bell Reynolds; whom he married July 20, 1973; a daughter, Angela Haslacker of Toms Brook; two sons, John W. Reynolds III of Edinburg and Jason Reynolds of Broadway; two sisters, Barbara Runion of Timberville and Wanda Sue Barb of Berryville; a brother, Rodney Reynolds of Harrisonburg; and nine grandchildren. Chaplain Dave M. Casto will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Monday at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Mount Jackson. Burial will follow at the Mount Jackson Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Reynolds home at any time or friends may call at the funeral home after 11 a.m. Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to the John W. Charlotte V. Thomas
Charlotte Virginia Thomas, age 78, of 454 Sandy Hook Road in Luray, Va., passed away Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at Avante at Harrisonburg. Mrs. Thomas was born June 13, 1926, in Overal, Va., and was the daughter of the late Homer Isaac Burner and Anna Mae Foster Burner. She was a homemaker and a member of the Luray Christian Disciples of Christ and the John Rhodes Chapter of D.A.R. On Feb. 10, 1951, she married Samuel Henry Thomas, who survives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Richard Burner Thomas and his wife, Patty Thomas, and Samuel Henry Thomas Jr., all of Luray; a daughter, Pat Ann Thomas of Charlottesville; and a grandson, Ryan Thomas of Luray. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Earl Burner; a half brother, Clyde H. Burner, and three half sisters, Juanita Knight, Edith Yates and Carol Marie Burner. The Rev. Glenn E. Clements will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at the Luray Christian Disciples of Christ. Burial will be at Beahm s Chapel Cemetery in Luray. Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, at the Bradley Funeral Home in Luray.

Irene Emswiller
Irene Emswiller, 94, of Deavers Lane, Harrisonburg, Va., died February 9, 2005, at Life Care Center in New Market. She was born July 3, 1910, in Kessel, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late Felix Semour and Dora Shaffer Kessel. She was a homemaker and a member of Edom United Methodist Church. On July 30, 1937, she married William Lester Emswiller Sr., who died April 26, 1968. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Dwight Sr. and Kathleen Emswiller of Harrisonburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and James Ritchie Sr. of Broadway; foster daughters, Sandy Dove of Bergton, Pat Condrey of Richmond; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; and three foster grandchildren. A son, William Lester Emswiller Jr., and two daughters, Maxine Thomas and Jackie Jones, preceded her in death. Pastors Charlene Landes and Tim Thomas will conduct a funeral service 10 a.m. today at the Grandle Funeral Home chapel in Broadway. Burial will be at Kessel Cemetery in Kessel, W.Va. The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Archie W. Johnson
Archie Willard Johnson, 82, of Grottoes, died Thursday, March 10, 2005 at Rockingham Memorial. Mr. Johnson was born Dec. 27, 1922, in Superior, Wis., and was a son of the late Hans and Tilly Handson Johnson. He had retired from 3M Labs. He had served in the US Army during World War II. On March 29, 1947 he married Lucille E. Johnson of Grottoes; she survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Diana Vega of Conga Park, Calif.; two sons, Clifford Johnson of Twin Lakes, Wis., and Wayne Johnson of Grottoes, eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Lorraine L. Brown
Lorraine Larbell Brown, 75, of Grottoes, died Thursday, March 10, 2005, at her residence. She had been ill for the past four years. Mrs. Brown was born July 9, 1929, in Pennsylvania and was the daughter of the late Edward and Sewilla McCarthy Yancey. She lived the majority of her life in the Grottoes community. She was a member of the Mount Moriah United Methodist Church. Before retiring at age 65, she had worked for Belle Meade, Rockingham Memorial Hospital and Newman s Nursing Home in Grottoes. On Sept. 6, 1949, she married Charles H. Brown; he preceded her in death Jan. 3, 2001. Surviving are a daughter, Leslie Wise of Grottoes; two sons, William and Fred Brown, both of Grottoes, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The Rev. Ralph Harris will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Monday at the Chapel of the Lindsey Funeral Home in Weyers Cave. Burial will be in the Mount Moriah United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the RMH Cancer Center, 235 Cantrell Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

Oley L. See
Oley Landon See, 68, of Virginia Avenue, Harrisonburg, died Thursday, March 10, 2005, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. See was born Oct. 18, 1936, in Mathias, W.Va., and was the son of the late Harry and Bessie Wilkins See. He was the owner of O&R Country Store in Singers glen. He was enlisted in the U.S. Air Force from 1962 to 1966, and had worked at the Applied Physics Department at John Hopkins. On Sept. 29, 1979, he married the former Ruby Mae Ford; she died Aug. 17, 2004. Surviving are two stepsons, Dowl F. Sherman Jr. of Harrisonburg and Johnnie E. Sherman of Broadway; three brothers, Blaine See of Harrisonburg and Dow and Dewey See, both of Broadway; two sisters, Velma Burgess of Winchester and Shelby Bly of Harrisonburg, and one grandson. Pastors Kevin Gerber and Alton McDaniel will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at the Grandle Funeral Home Chapel in Broadway. Burial will be at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
