Raymond C. Bryant
Raymond Cecil Bryant, 72, of 584 Elf Trail, Bassett, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Bryant was born on April 5, 1930, in Henry County. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, James Howard Bryant and Elsie Spencer Bryant; his foster parents, Bessie and Vanious Turner; his sisters, Violet Merriman and Vinie Rodgers; and three brothers, George, Frank and Arthur Bryant.
He served in the Army, retired from Bassett Mirror Co. after 20 years of service, and he attended Faith Baptist Church in Bassett.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Doris Joyce Bryant of the home; a daughter, Teresa Bryant Cardwell of Patrick Springs; three sons, Ron Bryant of Bassett, Doug Bryant of Gallipolis, Ohio, and Donald Bryant of Bassett; four brothers, Charlie Bryant of Ferrum, D.V. Turner Jr. of Bassett, Ernest Turner of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Jack Turner of Bassett; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Faith Baptist Church with Pastor John Shelley officiating. Burial will follow in Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Collins Funeral Services in Bassett from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today.
Mildred S. Coleman
The funeral for Mildred "Mickie" Slate Coleman, 73, of Ridgeway, who died July 27, 2002, was held Wednesday at Norris Funeral Services with the Rev. Rick Slate and Joe Hall officiating.
Pallbearers were Mark English, Brian English, Dr. Jim Farley, Tim Coleman, John Coleman and Don Coleman.
Vincent Greenfield Sr.
Vincent Marshall "Butch" Greenfield Sr., 51, Martinsville, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
A native of Martinsville, he was born Sept. 14, 1950, to Vincent Hugh Greenfield and Juanita Gravely Greenfield, now deceased. He was a towmotor operator at Pillowtex for 10 years and an Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Eva Johnson Greenfield of the home; two sons, Vincent Greenfield Jr. of Martinsville and Dominique Greenfield of the home; two sisters, Patricia Inabinette and Denise Hairston, both of Martinsville; a brother, Michael Greenfield of Las Vegas, Nev.; and two grandsons.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Jerusalem Christian Church with the Rev. Eugene Reynolds presiding. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral and at other times at the home.

Willie Lee Hairston
Willie Lee Hairston, 61, of 7 Stanley Court, Collinsville, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at his residence.
He was born in Henry County to Will Tomlin and Annie Brim Tomlin, both deceased. In addition, he was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.
He had worked as a truck driver for the Anthony Prunty Co. for several years and was a member of Bibleway Holiness Church in Eden, N.C.
Surviving are two stepsons, Ronnie Hairston of Martinsville and Johnny Hairston of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three sisters, Peggy Waller of Eden, N.C., Mary Wade of Collinsville and Sarah Walker of Hampton; a half-brother, Lewis Powell of Martinsville; and one step-granddaughter.
A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mayo Missionary Baptist Church cemetery
with the Rev. Robert T. Smith officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home of the half-brother, Lewis Powell, 170 Washington Road, Martinsville.
Arrangements are by Community Funeral Services, Ridgeway.
Homer L. Hylton
The funeral for Homer Lester Hylton, 81, of Woolwine, who died July 29, 2002, was held Thursday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Elder Edward Bowman officiating. Burial was in Jack's Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bradley Hylton, Robbie Hylton, Timothy Ring, Denver Lawson, Dean Lawson, Justin Lawson, Jimmy Ramey and Mike Davis.
Cecil Phanelson Jr.
The funeral for Cecil N. Phanelson Jr., 58, of 850 Laurel Park Ave., Martinsville, who died July 30, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C., will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Reach Out Apostolic Tabernacle in Axton. Bishop Lorenzo Hall will officiate with burial to follow in Carver Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the church a half hour prior to the funeral and other times at the home.
Phanelson was born in Roanoke on Jan. 25, 1944, a son of Vergie Hampton Phanelson Proctor, who survives, and the Cecil Phanelson Sr., now deceased. A brother, Charles Phanelson, is also deceased.
He attended Albert Harris High School, served in the Army and worked as an engineer for 25 years.
In addition to his mother, surviving are his wife, Agnes Hairston Phanelson of the home; his stepfather, Marion Proctor of Mercersburg, Pa.; one daughter, Vickie P. Adams of Martinsville; one sister, Theresa Barnes of Oxen Hill, Md.; two brothers, Patrick Wayne Phanelson of Atlanta, Ga., and Timothy Phanelson of Oklahoma; and three grandchildren.

Wesley Dean Saul
A graveside funeral for Wesley Dean Saul, 55, of Chilhowie, and formerly of Christiansburg and Henry County, who died July 30, 2002, was held Thursday at Henry Memorial Park with Pastor Mike Vest officiating. Military honors were performed by the Veterans Honor Guard of Martinsville and Henry County. The flag presentation was made by Spec. Milton Hardy Sr. and Spec. Jerry Collier.
Pallbearers were Steve Thacker, Michael Gardner, Roy McGlothlin, Kenneth Keen and Gehrig Ferguson.

Barbara R. Slobiski, 59, of 481 Jesse Ben Road, Bassett, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at her residence.

Ralph W. Still
OCALA, FLA.-- Ralph Wendell Still, 69, of Ocala, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002.
He was born in Henry County, Va., on June 26, 1933, to Jesse J. and Clara Wade Still, now deceased. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Frank J. Still.
Surviving are his wife, Ellen Vogel Still of Dunnellon; one daughter, Denise S. Higgins of Centreville, Va.; a son, Mark W. Still of Hollywood, Calif.; three step-children, James L. Bonnet of Dallas, Ore., Thomas P. Bonnet of Indeo, Calif., and Katherine B. Bauchle of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Still Kirbitz of Davison, Mich., and Clara Still Haynes of Bassett, Va.; two brothers, James Still of Kingman, Ariz., and John Lee Still of Flushing, Mich.; and nine grandchildren.
A private burial will be in the Military Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.
Carrie L. Craig
Carrie Louise Craig, 64, of Bassett, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, at RJR-Patrick Memorial Hospital.
She was the wife of Junior Craig of the home.

Bessie N. Hall
Bessie Nunn Hall, 94, of Stuart, died Sat., Oct. 12, 2002, at Blue Ridge Nursing Home.
She was born in Patrick County, Oct. 28, 1907, to Same Nunn and Mary Craddock Nunn, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred Hall; five sisters, May Lou Browning, Mildred Burden, Ruth Lylery, Pearl Collins and Edna Bates; two brothers, Monroe Nunn and Sam Nunn Jr.; one daughter, Barbara Ann Hall; and one son, James Frederick Hall.
She was a longtime member of the Mayo Mountain Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughters, Virginia Boles of Stuart; one sister, Lucy Hord of Kannapolis, N.C.; and one brothers, Noel Nunn of Concorde, N.C.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. David Heath officiating. Burial will be in the Church of Christ cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

James F. Law
EDEN, N.C.--James Flunoy Law, 96, of 221 Short Morgan Road, Eden, died Saturday at his home.
He was born Jan. 2, 1906, in Leatherwood, Va. to James Law and Lelia Bryant Law, both deceased.
The retired owner of Vogue Beauty Shop, he belonged to the MenŐs Club at the YMCA where he also served on the board of directors. He also served on city council and was an active member in the Spray Baptist Church, where he worked as Sunday School director, choir member and deacon. He belonged to the Exchange Club and the Tri-City Band.
Surviving are his wife, Una Law of the home; one daughter, Rinda Reeser Blackburn of Eden; two sons, Dr. James Law of Stuart, Va. and David Law of Eden; sisters, Virgie Agnew and Nancy Weatherford of Burlington; four grandchildren; one step grandchild; three great-grandchildren; and one step great-grandchild.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Spray Baptist Church with burial to follow at Overlook Cemetery.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. today at the church.

Ollie S. Turner
Ollie Frances Stone Turner, 81, of 1018 Oak St., Martinsville, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born in Henry County, July 31, 1921, to Andrew J. Stone and Dora Clark Stone, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her husband, General Jackson Turner on Nov. 21, 1989; two sons, Frank Stone and George William Turner; and two sisters, Mattie Sue Smith and Lena Mitchell.
She was a homemaker and a member of Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Collinsville.
Surviving are two daughters, Virginia Turner East of Claudville and Louise Turner Smithers of Trinity, N.C.; two sons, Andrew Jackson "Jackie" Stone of Ferrum and John Paul Turner of Galax; one brother, Garland Stone of Bassett; 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Community Funeral Service chapel with Charles Tomlinson and the Revs. Greg Hodges, Don Thomas and Jerry Whitlow officiating. Burial will be in the Blackberry Baptist Church cemetery
in Bassett.

The funeral for Ruth Carter Coleman, 90, of Martinsville, who died Dec. 3, 2002, at the Blue Ridge Rehab Center, will be held 2 p.m. today at Collins Funeral Services, Bassett, with the Revs. George Agnew and Joe Beck officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation, which was not held Wednesday because of inclement weather, will be held from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. today at Collins Funeral Services.
Mathew A. Dugger
Mathew A. Dugger, 14, of Patrick Springs, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, of injuries received in an automobile accident in Patrick County.
He was born on July 24, 1988, in Kissimmee, Fla. After coming to Patrick County, Mathew attended Hardin Reynolds Memorial School, where he played football. He was in the ninth grade at Patrick County High School and was on the PCHS Golf Team.
He attended Martinsville Christian Fellowship.
He was preceded in death by three grandparents, Emmett L. Dugger Sr., Bettye V. Andersen and Arthur M. Andersen.
Surviving are his parents, E. Lee Dugger Jr. and Tina Andersen Dugger of the home on Scenic Drive, Patrick Springs; two sisters, Rachel Adams of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Amanda Dugger of the home; and grandparents, Mauryne Dugger of Jacksonville, Fla., and Dewey L. Lumpkin Jr. of Rome, Ga.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart, with the Rev. Peter Church officiating.

She was the wife of James Winfred Lewis.

Veronica F. Martin
Veronica Ferguson Martin, 90, of 375 Virgil H. Goode Highway, Bassett, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital, Rocky Mount.
She was born Jan. 3, 1912, in McDowell County, W.Va., to the late Joe Cephas Ferguson and Sarah Davis Carter Ferguson.
Her husband, Nick Martin, died on Feb. 1, 1994. Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Lena O'Quinn and Bernice Scearce; five brothers, Paul, Sam, Silas, Bruce, and Whorley Ferguson; and a grandson, William "Kip" Parcell.
Surviving are six daughters, Barbara M. Tatum of Martinsville, Jeannette M. Crum of Henry, Sharon M. Hall of Collinsville, Diana M. Bailey of Oak Level, Brenda M. Gibson of Salem and Theresa M. Shepherd of Collinsville; four sons, Kermit W. Martin of Floyd, Gary D. Martin of Oak Level, Barry K. Martin of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and David K. Martin of Oak Level; 27 grandchildren; one step-grandson; 31 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Collins Funeral Chapel in Bassett, with the Rev. Bobby McGhee and Pastor Marvin Wade officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Hermon Church of the Brethren Cemetery.

RUSTBURG -- Marie Bryant Thomasson, 82, of 191 Howard's Manor Drive, died Dec. 3, 2002, at the Privett Private Care Home.
A native of Henry County, she was born Sept. 13, 1920. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy McAlexander Bryant and John Abe Bryant; a brother, John Bryant, and a sister, Lois Bryant Oaks.
She is survived by her husband, Owen C. Thomasson of the home; three sons, Owen C. Thomasson Jr. of Suffolk, Joseph Thomasson of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and John Thomasson of Marietta, Ga.; one daughter, Brenda Arthur of Rustburg; one sister, Jackie Minter of Martinsville; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home in Martinsville with the Rev. Rob Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at Roselawn Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until time for the service Saturday.
