Charles William Chuck Anderson Jr., 41, of 4708 Fort Avenue, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Shirley Johns Anderson.
Born Oct. 15, 1957 in Lynchburg, he was a son of Janie Johnson Anderson of Lynchburg and the late Charles W. Anderson Sr. He was a former employee of C.L. Lewis Construction Company.
In addition to his father, Chuck was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and a nephew, Jacob Anderson.
In addition to his wife, Chuck is survived by two children, Cody William Anderson and Amanda Lee Anderson; one brother, Jamey Anderson; one sister, Lisa A. Dunn and her husband, Johnny; one nephew, Keith Dunn all of Lynchburg; his mother and father-in-law, Cecil and Virginia Harris of Madison Heights and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today from Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Johnny Basham. Interment will follow in St. Paul s Cemetery, Monroe.
Lucille Angelitha Andrews
Miss Lucille Angelitha Andrews departed this life Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998 in Morgantown, W.Va.
Born in Campbell County, Oct. 12, 1912, she was the daughter of the late John and Martha Andrews. She was a member of Mt. Evergreen Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Lillian Oulds, Mary Farmer, Thelma Thompson, Florine Payne and Alberta Robinson and one brother, Altizer Andrews.
She is survived by a surrogate niece, Mrs. Lillian Jones and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. from Mt. Evergreen Baptist Church with the Rev. Lorenzo Rouff, pastor, officiating. Interment in the church cemetery. The cortege will assemble at the residence of her niece, Mrs. Lillian Jones, Rt. 2, Evington, Va.
Twila Jane Sprankle Chase
Twila Jane Sprankle Chase, 79, of 1213 Long Meadows Drive and formerly of Rouses Point, N.Y., died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Lt. Col. Harold L. Chase, USAF.
Mrs. Chase was born Aug. 2, 1919 in Valier, Pa. to the late Robert Clark Sprankle and the late Maude Dilts Sprankle. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Rousers Point, N.Y. where she had been a member of the Session and church secretary. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star where she had served as chapter treasurer.
She is survived by four sons and their wives, Robert and Katharine Chase of Amherst, Thomas A. and Diane Chase of Warwick, R.I., Michael II and Mary Chase of Tonawanda, N.Y. and Lawrence W. and Janice Chase of Lyndhurst, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Leslie and Alison Chase of Amherst, Allen Chase of Warwick, R.I., Gary Chase, Rita Brown and J.D. Burrows of Tonawanda, N.Y. and Jessica and Melissa Chase of Lyndhurst, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
A service will be held at a later date.

David Clay Doss
David Clay Doss, 85, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998 at Guggenheimer Nursing Home. He was the husband of Mable D. Doss.
Mr. Doss was born May 12, 1913 in Appomattox to Henry C. and Cordelia W. Doss. He was the owner of Doss-Falwell Real Estate Co. before retirement and a member of Fort Hill United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, two sons and their wives, Michael R. Doss and Doris of Orlando, Fla. and David L. Doss and Deborah of Concord; a daughter and her husband, Patricia D. Morcom and James of Monroe; a sister, Elsie F. Doss of Lynchburg, eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 1998 at Fort Hill Memorial Park, Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. John A. Siegle and the Rev. Gregory Doss officiating.

Grace Cofflin Floyd, 73, of Monroe, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
She is survived by her husband, Junior Edward Floyd; two sons, Edward Cofflin and Herman Cofflin; two daughters, Barbara Sain and Joyce Lakes.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 1998 at Calvary Cross Baptist Church, James Street and Stadium Road with the Rev. Jack Brooks officiating.

HURT Elmer Joseph Jack Hodges, 78, of 200 Ramsey Road, Hurt, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998 at his residence.
Born Aug. 13, 1920 in Franklin County, he was a son of the late Joseph Edward Hodges and Nora Virginia Williams Hodges. Mr. Hodges was predeceased by two sons, Dennis S. Hodges and Jackie S. Hodges; a granddaughter, Casey Elizabeth Hodges; a sister, Olliemae Plyer; two brothers, Joseph Hodges and Newton Hodges. He was a Marine veteran of World War II and a retired superintendent with the Lane Company.
He is survived by his wife, Pattie Shelton Hodges of the residence; three sons, Stanley Hodges of Wytheville, Carey Hodges of Hickory, N.C. and Joe Hodges of Bassett; one daughter, Nancy Lambert of Hartsville, S.C.; one brother, Burford Hodges of Roanoke; five sisters, Easter Haynes of Rocky Mount, June Crook of Moneta, Shirley Law of Rocky Mount, Nell Mitchell of Montgomery, Ala. and Beatrice Duncan of Columbus, Ga., 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998 at Greenfield Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. R.G. Rowland.

AMHERST Louise Kennedy Horne, 87, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998 at Camelot Nursing Home. She was the wife of Clarence Edward Horne.
Born March 13, 1911 in Coeburn, Va., she was the daughter of the late Jack Cameron and Virginia Shrader Kennedy. She was retired teacher from the Scott County school system.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Betty Swisher and husband, Harold M. of Amherst; one brother, Robert E. Kennedy and wife, Bonnie of Coeburn; two grandchildren, Harold M. Swisher III and wife, Karen of Severna Park, Md. and Angela K. Swisher and husband, Peter H. Kim of Fredericksburg; two great-grandsons, Harold M. Swisher IV and Daniel Christopher Kim.

Nicholas Haynie Kabler
Nicholas Haynie Kabler, Westminster-Canterbury, passed away Dec. 11, 1998. Son of the late Sue Lillian Haynie and Simeon Nicholas Kabler, he was born in Lynchburg, June 24, 1909. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, William Walton Kabler; son, Nicholas Smith Kabler; sister, Betty Kabler Garrett; nephew, Robert Rowan III.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sarah Evelyn Evans Kabler; son, Walton and his wife, Carolina Gonzales of Calif.; daughter, Anne and her husband, Ken Robichaux of S.C.; sister, Marian and her husband, Robert Rowan Jr. of N.M.; three nieces and one nephew, Sue Gena Garrett Lurie, Betsy Jane Garrett Dickson, William Haynie Rowan and Mary Sue Rowan-Hodge, three great-nieces and three great-nephews.
He moved away from Lynchburg and returned three times attending public schools in four different states, graduating from E.C. Glass in Aug., 1926. Throughout his life, he took a number of adult and technical education courses. He lived or worked in various cities in Va. and with the exception of Del., the Atlantic Seaboard states from S.C. to N.Y., W.Va., the District of Columbia and the Panama Canal Zone. First employed by the Old First National Bank of Lynchburg, he moved to AT&T and its subsidiaries in 1928 as a Communications Technician, retiring in 1972.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lynchburg, the Natural Bridge Appalachian Trail Club and A.T. Conference, Lynchburg Peace Education Center, Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America, Americans United for Separation of Church and State and an emeritus member of the Commications Workers of America (AFL-CIO). For some years he was a volunteer trails maintainer in public parks and forests. While in Greenville, S.C. and Panama, he served as a volunteer lay missionary.
A memorial service will be held later in the month.

Mildred Richeson Lamanna
AMHERST Mildred Richeson Lamanna died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998 at Virginia Baptist Hospital surrounded by her loving husband and four children. She was the daughter of the late William Henley and Ruth Watts Richeson.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Henley and Ramey Richeson. Mrs. Lamanna is survived by her husband, Stephen A. Lamanna, and her children, Harriet and Hugh Beazley, Larry and Jackie Lamanna, Saralu and Nick DeCarlo all of Amherst and Jim and Jeanine Lamanna of Salt Lake City, Utah. In addition she is survived by thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandson, a sister, Sarah R. Gordon of Lynchburg and a brother, Ret. General Hugh A. Richeson of Fairfax, Va.
Mrs. Lamanna graduated from Randolph-Macon Womens College and taught school in Amherst County. She actively supported the county public library system and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
A visitation for the family only will be held on today from 7-8:30 p.m. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998 at 2 p.m. at the Amherst Cemetery on Grandview Drive. Memorial contributions may be made to the Amherst Life Saving Crew.

Alice (Louise) Lang, 90, of Madison Heights, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born in Madison Heights, June 9, 1908, she was a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Lang and Alice Robertson Lang. She attended Holy Cross Catholic School and was retired from Craddock-Terry Shoe Corp. with over 30 years of service and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. She was a faithful member of Madison Heights Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Otis L. Lang and Howard C. Lang.
Miss Lang is survived by four brothers, Carlton P. Lang and his wife, Hope, Frank P. Lang, Robert Lang and his wife, Grace and Paul T. Lang and his wife, Nadine all of Madison Heights; one sister, Jane Carroll and her husband, Clayton also of Madison Heights and a great number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday from Whitten Monelison Chapel by Dr. Tim Madison. Interment will be in Meade Cemetery.

Jewell May Cottrell Paulette
Jewell May Cottrell Paulette of Madison Heights, died Dec. 9, 1998. Heaven was blessed with a shining Jewel. God opened his loving arms and welcomed Jewell home.
Jewell was born May 15, 1942 in Covington. She was the daughter of the late Erskine Cottrell and Essie Tomlin Cottrell of Madison Heights.
Jewell leaves to cherish her memory, her loving and devoted husband, Wayne (Bullet) Paulette of 133 5th Street in Madison Heights; one son, Tommy Jennings and his wife, Debbie of Madison Heights, two daughters, Melissa Paulette and her fiance, Brian Owens of Madison Heights, Teresa Tuck and her husband, Greg of Brookneal; two half brothers, Erskine Cottrell Jr. of Covington, Frankie Powell of Madison Heights; two grandsons, Travis Light of Chesapeake, Zachary Light of Brookneal; and three special friends, Peggy Robbins and Betty Brooks of Madison Heights and Candy Gibson of Lynch Station.

L.W. (Sonny) Wingfield and Lee Wingfield Gilliam have been notified of the death of their brother, Conrad Winky Wingfield of Oldsmar, Fla. on Dec. 10, 1998.
He was born Nov. 22, 1919 in Lynchburg. He was the son of the late Conrad B. and Carrie Walton Wingfield. He was a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Frances North Wingfield and two sons and two daughters.

Deacon James Anderson, 85, of 414 Grayson Street, departed this life Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Alberta Davis Anderson.
Born in Bedford County, Dec. 19, 1912, he was the son of the late James and Berda Anderson. He was a member of Rivermont Baptist Church and retired from Lynchburg Foundry.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by 11 children, Roger Anderson of Hot Springs, Colleen Oliver of Clemmons, N.C., Corrine Burns, JoAnn Bridges and Victoria Mayo of Md., Carl Anderson of Los Angeles, Calif., Betty Rollins, Annie B. Nannie Ruth Poe Sanders Bluecloud, 54, of Tampa, Fla., died Tuesday, December 8, 1998.
She was born December 25, 1943 in Amherst County. She was a homemaker and a member of Christ Family Church in Tampa. The one thing she loved in life was to praise the Lord.
She is survived her by husband, Chicasay R. Bluecloud; one daughter, Tamara Sanders-Dutcher of Tampa; two stepdaughters, Destar Bluecloud and Monique Bluecloud, both of Sarasota, Fla.; two sons, Rickey L. Sanders of Ontario, Canada and Scottie D. Sanders of Bradenton, Fla.; two sisters, Betty Gonzales of Arlington, Texas and Vivian Greer of Lynchburg; one brother, Junior Poe of Roanoke, and three grandchildren.

Milton Rosser Carwile
Milton Rosser Carwile, 76, of Rt. 1, Box 120, Concord, went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 10, 1998 at his home after a long battle with cancer. He was the husband of Lura Booth Carwile for 52 years.
Rosser was born May 22, 1922 in Campbell County, the son of the late Elderidge Thomas Carwile Sr. and Nettie Carwile Carwile. He was a retired builder and farmer. He served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Div. in Italy, France and Germany during W.W. II. He was a member of New Chapel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one brother, Elderidge Thomas Carwile Jr. and one sister, Nellie Carwile White.
In addition to his wife Lura, he is survived by four sons, Daniel B. Carwile, Bruce M. Carwile and his wife, Gracie, Thomas M. Carwile and his wife, Judy and Barry A. Carwile all of Concord; four grandchildren, Teresa C. Pierce and husband, Freeman of Hurt, Samantha L. Carwile of Altavista, Jacob T. Carwile and Amanda D. Carwile of Concord; two great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Stephen Pierce; one step granddaughter, Tina Robins and husband, Steve of Lynchburg and three step great-grandchildren, Amanda, Stephen and Amy Robins also survive him. Katherine Lee (Davis) Davidson
Katherine Lee (Davis) Davidson, a former resident of Baltimore, Md., for 51 years, and a native of Lynchburg, died December 8, 1998, in Brookfield, Wisconsin. She was living near her daughter at the time of her death.
Mrs. Davidson was the daughter of the late Dallas Montillion Davis and Katherine Rowzie (Amonette) Davis of Rivermont. She was a graduate of E. C. Glass High School and alumna of Randolph-Macon Woman s College. She received her training in radiological technology at the University of Virginia Medical School in Charlottesville, where she met her late husband, Charles N. Davidson, M.D., who practiced radiology in Baltimore for 40 years.
A member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, the University of Maryland Hospital Auxiliary, the Women s Auxiliary of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland, the Roland Park Women s Club, the Virginia Women of Maryland, and the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mrs. Davidson was a long-time member of the Second Presbyterian Church of Baltimore, and served as a past president of the Friends of McKim Presbyterian Community Center.
She is survived by her son, The Rev. Charles N. Davidson Jr. of Farmington Hills, Michigan; her daughter, Nancy Davidson Neal of Brookfield, Wisc.; four grandchildren, Mark F. Davidson, Katherine C. Davidson, Spencer D. Neal and Lindsay F. Neal; a great-grandson, Jackson W. Neal; her sister, Louise D. Platt of Lynchburg; a niece, Katherine Ann (Platt) Payne of Lynchburg; and three nephews, William L. Platt of Jasper, Florida, Robert D. Platt of Lynchburg and Joseph B. Platt of Charlottesville.

Elsa Herrmann Guthrie, 74, of 2044 Indian Hill Road, died Tuesday, December 8, 1998 at her home.
Born in Genkingen, Germany April 26, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Herrmann and Marie Ruoff Herrmann and was the widow of A.K. (Kenny) Guthrie.
Mrs. Guthrie was an active member of the Fort Avenue Church of Christ. In the Forest Hill Ruritan Club, she was Environmental Committee chairman and vice president-elect. Mrs. Guthrie frequently volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program and at St. John s Nursing Home.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Susan G. Garrett and her husband, Donald, of Cleveland, Tenn.; a son, Steven K. Katherine Kitty Staton Hobbs, 71, of Berkshire Place, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998 at her home. She was the wife of Robert Pokey Hobbs.
Mrs. Hobbs was born May 3, 1927 in Lynchburg to the late Louis and Flora Vest Staton. She was a very active member of Park View United Methodist Church for 30 years where she served as chairwoman of the worship committee, in family ministry and a member of the choir. She also was a member of the Elaine Martin Circle and was with General Electric for 25 years. Mrs. Hobbs was Captain of Degree Team Court 369 of Woodmen of the World.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Rick Fore of Calif., Danny R. Childress and his wife, Becky of Lynchburg; two stepsons, Robert E. Hobbs Jr. and his wife, Dolly of Ridgeway, David A. Hobbs and his wife, Barbara of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; a stepdaughter, Brenda Hobbs Renzulli and her husband, Carmine of Morgan Hill, Calif.; a sister, Sandra Staton Parton of Apopka, Fla., 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mary Arlene Kelly Kilpatrick of Fayetteville, Ga., died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998 at Fayetteville Community Hospital after a long illness.
Born July 19, 1917 in Fireco, W.Va., the daughter of the late William James Kelly Sr. and Frances Elizabeth Hall Kelly. She was the wife of the late Charles Franklin Kilpatrick Sr.
She is survived by one daughter, Sandra Ann Scogin of Fayetteville, Ga.; three sons, Charles Franklin Kilpatrick Jr., James Coleman Kilpatrick both of Liberty, S.C., Richard Kelly Kilpatrick, Loganville, Ga.; two granddaughters, Tonya Kay Dean and Melissa Ann Kilpatrick; five sisters, Mrs. Roy (Dorothy) Pilson, Stuart, Mrs. Carson (Violette) Chisholm, Lynchburg, Mrs. Earl (Patricia) Charnock, Madison Heights, Mrs. C.S. (Edith) Frazier Jr., Altavista, Mrs. W.D. (Jean) Woody, Amherst, three great-grandchildren and 16 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell Jefferson Kelly Sr., William James Kelly Jr. and one sister, Bernice Mae Dudley.

AMHERST Mildred Richeson Lamanna died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998 at Virginia Baptist Hospital surrounded by her loving husband and four children. She was the daughter of the late William Henley and Ruth Watts Richeson.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Henley and Ramey Richeson. Mrs. Lamanna is survived by her husband, Stephen A. Lamanna, and her children, Harriet and Hugh Beazley, Larry and Jackie Lamanna, Saralu and Nick DeCarlo all of Amherst and Jim and Jeanine Lamanna of Salt Lake City, Utah. In addition she is survived by thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandson, a sister, Sarah R. Gordon of Lynchburg and a brother, Ret. General Hugh A. Richeson of Fairfax, Va.
Mrs. Lamanna graduated from Randolph-Macon Womens College and taught school in Amherst County. She actively supported the county public library system and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Mary Iva Laughlin, 94, of Bedford, passed away Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, in the Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born May 8, 1904, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Jack Alexander Laughlin, Sr. and Lelia Newman Laughlin. She was a member of the Ephesus United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a sister, Avis L. Fariss of Bedford; several nieces and nephews.

Born May 29, 1906 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late William Allen and Annie Walton Deacon. She was the wife of the late Eldridge F. Dunn. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Gordon W. Deacon, Glenwood A. Deacon and a sister, Dorothy Deacon.
Mrs. Dunn was a member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church and past member of Old Dominion Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Surviving are a son, Eldridge F. Dunn Jr. and his wife, Nancy and a daughter, Carolyn D. Smith and her husband, Owen; seven grandchildren, Mark Smith, Stephen Dunn, Kenneth Dunn, David Smith, Paul Smith, Keith Dunn, and April D. Lowe and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Permelia Miller Moore, 92, of Lynchburg, departed this life Monday, Dec. 7, 1998 at Avante Nursing Home.
Born in Lynchburg, Aug. 15, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Robert D. and Viola T. Miller. Mrs. Moore was married to the late David C. Moore. Mrs. Moore attended public schools in Lynchburg. She was a graduate of Knoxville College and Hampton Institute. She was a retired teacher of the Lynchburg Public School System having given 42 years of dedicated service at Robert S. Payne Elementary school. She was a faithful member of Jackson Street United Methodist church, very active in the United Methodist Women, Senior Choir, Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. Her affiliation with other organizations included Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Glossilla Arts Club and adopted Mother of the Class of 49ers Club for 29 years. Mrs. Moore loved people and was always ready to share her talents through poetry and music. She was known for her sense of humor and a deep love for children.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
She is survived by a niece and nephew she reared, Frankie J. Jamison of Washington, D.C. and Robert N. Jackson of Philadelphia, Pa.; a host of nieces, nephews, three sisters-in-law and many friends.
Thanks must be given to Mrs. Geraldine Clark and Mrs. Karen Turpin for their constant support during her illness.

She is survived by three sons, Kenneth Pannell of Hurt, Nichel Gaines of Cleveland, Ohio; and Glenmore Carter of Richmond; three daughters, Ester Rosser of Hurt, Joyce Hardy of Forestville, Md. and Evonne Caison of Fort Washington, Md; two devoted sisters, Edith Farmer of Hurt and Arlean McAden of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one devoted daughter-in-law, Bonnie Pannell of Hurt; three sons-in-law, Carlton Rosser of Hurt, Rev. Herbert Dandridge Campbell, 76, of Route 2, Rustburg, died peacefully Tuesday, December 8, 1998, at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital. He was the devoted husband of 57 years to Gladys Bailey Campbell.
Born April 14, 1922, in Amherst County, he was a son of the late Herbert J. and Alice Pendleton Campbell. He was a World War II veteran, having served with the 13th Armored Division of the 3rd U.S. Army; a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Post 163. Mr. Campbell was a retired employee of English Construction Company and was employed with A.B. Burton Construction Company for 33 years. He was a member of New Chapel Baptist Church and loved the outdoors, nature, family and friends.
In addition to his wife, he leaves to cherish his memory, a son Herbert D. Campbell Jr. of Gainesville; a daughter, Carole Campbell of Rustburg; four grandchildren, Dandridge Campbell III of Atlanta, Ga., Graham Pendleton Campbell of Gainesville, Kimberly Hughes and her husband, Jerry Crosby of Alexandria, Lori Seibel and her husband, Rich, of Wake Forest, N.C.; two great-grandchildren, Brett and Bailey Seibel; a sister, Elizabeth C. In addition to his wife, he leaves to cherish his memories, one daughter, Mary Cardwell and her husband, Theodore; four sons, Bernard Chilton Jr., Cleon and his devoted wife, Esther, William, Herman and his wife, Augustine; two special daughters-in-law, Edith and Leola Chilton, all of Madison Heights; four loving granddaughters, Carla Lewis and Daphne Chilton, both of Madison Heights, Shirley Jordan of Lynchburg and Danita Cabell of Amherst; 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998 at Bolling Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Edward Jones officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
His remains will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the service. The family will assemble at the residence.

Charlotte Deacon Dunn, 92, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday, December 8, 1998, at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born May 29, 1906 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late William Allen and Annie Walton Deacon. She was the wife of the late Eldridge F. Dunn. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Gordon W. Deacon, Glenwood A. Deacon and a sister, Dorothy Deacon.
Mrs. Dunn was a member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church and past member of Old Dominion Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Surviving are a son, Eldridge F. Dunn Jr. and his wife, Nancy and a daughter, Carolyn D. Smith and her husband, Owen; seven grandchildren, Mark Smith, Stephen Dunn, Kenneth Dunn, David Smith, Paul Smith and April D. Lowe and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. Charles Stinson and the Rev. Herbert Maynard. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Polly Adams Jessee, 87, died Tuesday, December 8, 1998, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Warren Kiser Jessee.
Mrs. Jessee was born September 26, 1911 in Lovingston to the late Charles Sutter Adams and the late Ella Ree Suddarth Adams. She was a member of Southview United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her son and his wife, Roy and Edna Jessee, a daughter and her husband, Shirley and James Wewetzer, all of Forest; four grandchildren and their spouses, Sharon W. and Philip Danaher of Forest, Elizabeth W. and Andrew Guill of Lynchburg, Wendy J. and Robert Hall of Apex, N.C., Holli J. and Thomas McMillian of Waxaw, N.C. and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sisters and one brother.

Born in Appomattox County, May 10, 1913, he was a son of the late C. Douglas Almond and Susan Virginia Harris Almond. He was a member and Deacon of New Hope Baptist Church and a retired carpenter for J.E. Sears.
He is survived by four children, James Alfred Almond and his wife, Norma of Herndon, Hazel A. Kendrick and her husband, Jerry of Appomattox, Carolyn A. Smith and her husband, Wayne of Rustburg and Brenda A. Ramsdell of Forest, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Milton Allen Almond.

Gladys Mays Foster Hamlett, 94, of Lynchburg, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Franklin Younger Hamlett and her first husband was the late Harry Foster.
Born in Madison Heights, June 4, 1904, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Jackson Mays and Lizzie Proffitt Mays. Mrs. Hamlett was a retired cafeteria employee for Marriott Corp. at Liberty University for 23 years. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Madison Heights.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Harry Foster Jr. and Larry G. Hamlett.
Mrs. Hamlett is survived by two daughters, Frances F. Webb of Lynchburg, Carolyn H. Martin and her husband, Carrol of Chester; two sons, John W. (Billy) Hamlett of Lynchburg and Douglas D. Hamlett and his wife, Glenyce of Drakes Branch; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren and a devoted friend, Eve.

Mary Elizabeth Moon Hicks, 99, of 251 Arrowhead Drive, Madison Heights, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998 in Camelot Hall Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Walter Millner Hicks.
She was born Aug. 3, 1899 in Amherst County, the daughter of the late John Marvin Moon and Katherine Smoot Moon. She was a life long member of Smyrna United Methodist Church and was affiliated with Madison Heights Christian Church. She was a former member of The Women s Auxiliary of Disabled Veterans and Women s Society of Christian Service.
She is survived by two daughters, Annie H. Ferguson and Margaret H. Mantiply both of Madison Heights; two stepdaughters, Sarah H. Hartnett of Blacksburg and Mildred Spillers of W.Va. and one granddaughter, Sue Ferguson of Madison Heights.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. D. Jack Hamilton and the Rev. C. Douglas Pillow. Interment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Phyllis A. Murphy, formerly of Madison Heights, went to be with the Lord Sunday morning, Dec. 6, 1998 in Clearwater, Fla. after a long illness. Her husband, James A. Murphy, preceded her in death.
She is survived by six sons, Rev. George C. Murphy and his wife, Doris, James A. Murphy, Edward A. Murphy and Mary, Patrick M. Murphy and Tammy, John R. Murphy and Grace, Eugene H. Murphy, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive her.

Dall Pannell, 85, of 3150 Buffalo Road, Long Island, died Sunday morning at his residence.
He was born July 10, 1913 in Halifax County. He was a son of the late Dave Pannell and Betty Word Pannell. He was preceded in death by one son, Lloyd Pannell. He was married to Jennie Pannell of the residence. Mr. Pannell was a retired self-employed farmer and school bus driver. He was a member of First Buffalo Baptist Church where he has served on the Board of Deacons and was a Sunday School Teacher, Trustee and member of the Senior Choir.
In addition to his wife, Mrs. Jennie Pannell of the residence, he is survived by five sons, William Pannell of Ft. Washington, Md., Paul Pannell of Philadelphia, Pa., Carl Pannell of Uppermarlboro, Md. and Herbert Pannell and Ronnie Pannell both of Long Island; four daughters, Bethann Thomas of Washington, D.C., Eleaser Burrell of Garner, N.C., Barbara Pannell and Gloria Pannell both of Long Island, 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the First Buffalo Baptist Church by the Rev. M.J. Palmer and the Rev. S.C. Terry with burial in the church cemetery.

APPOMATTOX Leon Paulette, 65, of Bowling Green, Ky. and Madison Heights, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998 in the VA Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. He was the husband of Angie Farmer-Paulette.
Born in Evergreen, July 13, 1933, he was a son of the late Samuel Russell Paulette and Jeannette Garrett Paulette. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of Evergreen Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Dean Paulette of Lynchburg, Sharon P. Lester of Forest, Mark Paulette of Rockville, Md., Michelle Ball of Colleyville, Texas, Kelly Paulette of Lynchburg; a stepson, Luke Okes Jr. of Lynchburg and 10 grandchildren.

Rose B. Vaughan
On Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, the life of Rose B. Vaughan closed on earth to blossom anew with God. The Lord called, peacefully Rose answered. The victory won, the battled ceased at the age of 84.
Rose was the wife of the late McKinley Vaughan, the daughter of the late James T. and Genorah B. Christian. She was preceded in death by three sons, William McKinley, Robert and John; four brothers, William L., John, James and Roger E.; two sisters, Elizabeth Fitzgerald and Alma McDaniel.
At an early age she was Baptized at St. Peters Baptist Church in Clifford.
Rose lived a quiet and peaceful life, not speaking out much, but when she did, you would sit and listen. She was an avid reader and loved to watch all types of sports on television.
Rose leaves to mourn her loss, two daughters, Evelyn D. Vaughan of Temple Hills, Md. and Ellen Tompkins of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one son, Eddie Vaughan of Amherst; eight grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, one sister, Edith Bevan of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Robbie Christian of Washington, D.C.; one daughter-in-law, two sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
Her remains rest at Winfree-Wright Funeral Service Inc., 162 Depot Street, Amherst until Wednesday afterwhich her remains will lie in state at St. Peter Baptist Church, Clifford, where the family will receive friends at 10 a.m. for a wake service until 11 a.m. The funeral will commence at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Margaret Nelson officiating. Interment will be in the Christian Aide Cemetery, Amherst.

Shirley L. Warner
AMHERST, N.H. Shirley Lorraine (Clark) Warner, a resident of Amherst, N.H. since 1968, was born July 13, 1929 in Detroit, Mich. and she died in the presence of her family at her home in Amherst on Dec. 2, 1998 at 11:26 a.m. She was the daughter of the late Theodore E. and Ellen (Steele) Clark of Ohio, the widow of Harold C. Warner who passed away Oct. 1, 1994 and sister of the late Gaylord O. Clark of Ohio.
Shirley C. Warner stands as a 12th generation direct descendent of Governor William Bradford and Pastor William Brewster of the Plymouth Pilgrims. She is also in the lineage of John Steele, one of the first settlers of Hartford, Conn. and Lorenzo Carter, one of the founders of Cleveland, Ohio. She leaves her membership in the NH Mayflower Society and the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Shirl has left two children and seven great-grandchildren to carry on the high calling chartered by her ancestors.
Mrs. Warner was also a charter member and director of the Amherst Lioness Club. She actively participated in that organization as treasurer and newsletter editor. Mrs. Warner also served three years as a board member of the NH Lioness District Cabinet.
Prior to her marriage, Shirley graduated from Woodville High School in Ohio and attended Danir Business College. She also worked in her family s business in Ohio and was employed by law firms in Ohio and Boston as a legal assistant. While in Amherst, N.H., she was owner and manager of The Albert Giles Copper Shop and also worked with her husband at Warner Associates, Realtors.
Survivors include a son, Harold Bradford Warner and a daughter-in-law, Ruth of Amherst, N.H.; a daughter, Thea (Warner) Ho and son-in-law, David of Toronto, Canada; seven grandchildren, Daniel Warner, Jonathan Warner, Stephen Warner, James Warner, Victoria Warner, Lovelee Warner and Philip Warner all of Amherst, N.H.; three brothers, Theodore, Arthur and Carter Clark, 13 nieces and nephews and 25 great nieces and nephews all of Ohio.
A graveside service was conducted by her son, Brad Warner at Meadowview Cemetery in Amherst, N.H. for the family members who attended.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, Mrs. Warner and the family request any memorials be made payable to Brad Warner and addressed to Shirley C. Warner Memorial, P.O. Box 3, Amherst, N.H., 03031.

Carolyn Hawkins Wooldridge, 34, of Forest, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of Thomas (Tommy) W. Wooldridge Sr.
Born in Lynchburg, July 29, 1964, she was the daughter of Ronald D. Hawkins and Phylis Scott Hawkins. She was a graduate of Lynchburg Christian Academy and a employee of The Cobbler Shop, Inc. Carolyn was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, Candie Harte Wooldridge, Tabitha Whitney Wooldridge and Thomas (T.J.) William Wooldridge Jr.; four brothers, Ronnie Lee Hawkins and his wife, Rosie of Forest, David Paige Hawkins and his wife, Beth of Madison Heights, Christopher Clark Hawkins of Lynchburg and Michael Earl Hawkins and his wife, Sandra of Lynchburg; her paternal grandmother, Hilda Hawkins and her maternal grandmother, Ethel Scott.

Born in Stapleton, he was the son of the late John Bowling and Mary Beverly Bowling. He was a member of Fairmont Baptist Church of Stapleton. He was the husband of Lora R. Bowling. He was preceded in death by three children; John Bowling, Dorothy Ware, and Beatrice York; one brother, Alfred Bowling.

William (Bill) Hale Jennings, 59, of 5429 Thomas Jefferson Road, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Virginia (Jinny) Hight Jennings.
Born June 7, 1939 in Dublin, he was the son of the late Thomas I. Ingram Sr. and Helen Jennings Ingram. He was retired insurance agent with American General Insurance Co. for 33 years, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a member of Old Forest Road Baptist Church. He loved the outdoors, nature, family and friends.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, William D. Jennings of Forest; a daughter, Deborah J. Powell and her husband, Wayne Powell of Forest and a grandson, Justin L. Harrison of Forest; three sisters, Helen R. Palmer, Portsmouth, Betty Jo Engledove, Lynchburg, Sandra I. Mann, Lynchburg; two brothers, Michael T. Ingram, Forest, Thomas I. HAMPTON Nealy Esther Bryant Oliver, 85, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998.
Born in Buckingham County, she had been a Hampton resident for 37 years where she retired from Leggett Department Store. Mrs. Oliver was a member of First United Methodist Church, Fox Hill, the Edith Spencer Class and the Westly Circle. She was a charter member of Peakland Methodist and former member of First United Methodist Church of Lynchburg.
Mrs. Oliver was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Oliver Sr. She was the daughter of the late Henry Floyd and Effie Burnley Bryant.
She is survived by her sons, George H. Oliver Jr. and his wife, Patricia of Las Vegas, Nev. and Kenneth L. Oliver and his wife, Frances of Gloucester; her brothers, Claude T. Bryant and Bernard N. Bryant both of Lynchburg; her sisters, Mrs. Hubert (Lula) Nash and Mrs. R. Gordon (Lila) Candler both of Lynchburg; her grandchildren, Brian H. Oliver, Elaine M. Oliver and Sarah A. Oliver and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Audrey Pugh of 1613 - 13th Street, departed this life on Saturday in Bedford County Nursing Home.
She was born in Gladys to the late Alexander and Ada Gilliam Bradley.
She is survived by her husband, Russell Pugh; two brothers-in- law, Bennie Pugh of Lynchburg and James Jackson of Chatham; three sisters-in-law, Christine Monroe, Ethel Pugh and Christine Pugh. She was preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
She was a member of Symrna Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Margaret Mary Atchison Van Heuckeroth, 84, of Alexandria, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Arthur William Van Heuckeroth.
Born in Washington, D.C., Jan. 23, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Bernard Atchison and Margaret McMahon Atchison. She was a member of St. Mary s Catholic Church in Alexandria and a former employee of the National Bureau of Standards.
She is survived by a daughter, Gretchen Morris and her husband, George of Lynchburg; two brothers, Bernard J. Atchison of Rockville, Md. and Lewis F. Atchison Sr. of Alexandria; three grandchildren, Kelly McMahon Morris, Arthur Graham Morris and Michael Patrick Morris all of Lynchburg; a niece, Sue Whisenant of Winter Springs, Fla. and a nephew, Lewis F. Atchison of Mobile, Ala.

Mrs. Virginia Leah Armstead, 76, of Huddleston, departed this life Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998 in Jamaica, N.Y.
She was born July 22, 1922 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Henry Jones. She was the wife of the late James K. Armstead.
She leaves to cherish her memories two sisters, Mrs. Shirley Golden and Mrs. Eunice Reed both of Jamaica, N.Y.; one brother, Alexander Jones of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters-in-law, Beatrice Armstead of Jamaica, N.Y., Beverly Milerson of Arverne, N.Y. and Lucinda Armstead of Texas; three brothers-in-law, Charles Reed and Neuman Butler both of Jamaica, N.Y. and Edward Armstead of Texas; two godchildren, Alexis Jones and Nicole Jones both of Columbus, Ohio, a host of dear nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family is receiving friends at the residence, 24808, Huddleston.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 1998 from Chapel Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Russell Lee Pastor officiating with interment in the church cemetery. The cortege will assemble at the residence at 2:15 p.m.

Irene Snead Bradley
Irene Snead Bradley of 1231 Nunnley Bridge Road, Vernon Hill, died Dec. 5, 1998 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Snead was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters; Mrs. Dorothy Bradley Knight of Madison Heights and Mrs. Cloris Bradley Weaver of Lynchburg; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Frederick William Bradley and three sons.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Wilkins conducting the service. Burial will be in church cemetery.

James Nowlin Colbert
James Nowlin Colbert, 87, of Old Graves Mill Road, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998. He was married for over 52 years to the late Elsie Barbour Colbert.
James was born Oct. 14, 1911 in Lynchburg. He was the son of the late Walter David Colbert and Carrie Cleveland Lee Colbert. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Lorene Colbert, Mae Lindsey and Lucille Wood.
James accepted Christ at an early age and was one of the charter members of Park View Methodist Church, actively involved in building the church laying brick by brick. He married Elise in 1929 and they labored many years working with their church. Though they never had children of their own, Elise and James were Mom and Dad to lots of children down through the years.
James had several professions during his long life. For years he worked at the Hosiery Mill. When that closed, he ran a route for White Star Laundry until the 1950s. Then he turned his favorite pastime - dogs and hunting, into his last career. He (with the help of his nephew Chief) started Colbert Kennels which he ran up into his 70s. He loved working with the dogs, being outside and enjoying the beauty of nature. The last five years of his life were spent fighting the cruel ravages of Alzheimer s disease.
Those left to mourn James passing include a brother, Paul E. Colbert Sr. and his wife, Marie; a sister, Frances Pickeral; a stepbrother, Odell Toad Padgett; stepsisters, Doris Garner and Thelma Bell and her husband, Winston all of Lynchburg. He will be missed by nieces and nephew, Patsy Lee Simpson and her husband, Noel of Smith Mountain, Linda McGann and her husband, Richard of Lynchburg, Randy Colbert and his wife, Kathy of Ashland, Ky. and most especially by his nephew, Paul e. Chief Colbert Jr. and his wife, June and Jennifer and Christopher Colbert will miss their Papa.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 7-9 p.m. tonight at Whittens Timberlake Chapel.
The funeral service will be at noon Monday at Whittens Timberlake Chapel with burial to follow at Fort Hill Cemetery.

Clyde Edward Davidson
Clyde Edward Davidson, 81, of Lynchburg, went to his heavenly home on Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at his residence. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Gertrude Jordan Davidson.
Born, September 15, 1917, in Campbell County, he was the son of the late John Ed Davidson and Cora Bell Johnson Davidson. Mr. Davidson was a graduate of E. C. Glass High School and was retired from the Lynchburg Fire Department and the C. W. Warthen Company. He was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son Waverly Davidson and his wife, Nancy of Smith Mountain Lake, one daughter Geraldine Davidson Staples and her husband, Bill of Concord, two brothers, Ray Davidson and Leslie Davidson, both of Lynchburg, three grandchildren, Wendy Cassidy, Scott Davidson and Tammy Davidson and one great-grandchild, Jacob Cassidy.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel by the Pastors Larry Brodie and Henry Enochs. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7- 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

William Morgan Ellington
William Morgan Ellington, 80, formerly of Gladys, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998 in Piedmont Geriatric Hospital in Burkeville. He was twice married, first to the late Louise Mayberry Ellington and second to the late Barbara Easton Ellington.
Born May 31, 1918 in Campbell County, he was a son of the late Grover Lee and Ann Elizabeth Almond Ellington. He was a member of the Sharon United Methodist Church, a retired guard with the Corrections Department of Rustburg Correctional Unit #9 and a U.S. Army veteran of WWII.
He is survived by one son, Danny R. Ellington of Dayton, Ohio; two daughters, Joan E. Barr of Portsmouth and Peggy E. Miller of Ocala, Fla.; one brother, Jim Ellington of Gladys; two sisters, Pauline Bomar of Lynchburg and Antha Koleznar of Brookneal, 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998 in Sharon United Methodist Church by the Rev. J. Robert Berghuis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery
with military honors by the American Legion Post #16.

Owen Aubrey Henderson
PAMPLIN Owen Aubrey Henderson, 79, died Saturday morning, Dec. 5, 1998 in the Appomattox Health Care Center. He was the husband of Peggy Cyrus Henderson.
Born in Botetout County, April 29, 1919, he was the son of the late Luther John Henderson and Tempie Bowles Henderson. He was a WWII veteran. Owen was a self-employed logger and retired after 50 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Robert A. Henderson and his wife, Sally of Lynchburg, Ronnie E. Henderson and his wife, Becky of Appomattox, Sandra H. Woodson and her husband, Richard of Pamplin and Donna H. Franklin and her husband, Doug of Evergreen; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two stepdaughters, Peggy Mayberry Taylor and her husband, Butch and Shella Mayberry Lester all of Pamplin; a stepson, Roger Lee Mayberry and his wife, Monica of Concord and four stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 1998 at Robinson Funeral Home with burial to follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Margaret Price Holberton
Margaret Price Holberton, 82, of Lynchburg, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998 in Lynchburg General Hospital after a short illness. She was the wife of the late Richard Whately Holberton.
Born April 5, 1916 in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late George Lewis and Lucy Dean Shelton Price. She attended Longwood College and was a graduate of the College of William and Mary.
Surviving are three sons, Richard Whately Holberton Jr. of Honolulu, Hawaii, George Bartle Holberton of South Boston and David Dean Holberton of Lynchburg; two grandsons, Bryan Holberton of Chesapeake and Earnest Holberton of Lynchburg and two great-grandchildren, Patrick and Mikaela Holberton.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Diuguid Rivermont Chapel with the Rev. Stephen T. Smythers officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

William (Bill) Hale Jennings
William (Bill) Hale Jennings, 59, of 5429 Thomas Jefferson Road, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Virginia (Jinny) Hight Jennings.
Born June 7, 1939 in Dublin, he was the son of the late Thomas I. Ingram Sr. and Helen Jennings Ingram. He was retired insurance agent with American General Insurance Co. for 33 years, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a member of Old Forest Road Baptist Church. He loved the outdoors, nature, family and friends.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, William D. Jennings of Forest; a daughter, Deborah J. Powell and her husband, Wayne Powell of Forest and a grandson, Justin L. Harrison of Forest; three sisters, Helen R. Palmer, Portsmouth, Betty Jo Engledove, Lynchburg, Sandra I. Mann, Lynchburg; two brothers, Michael T. Ingram, Forest, Thomas I. Ingram, Lynchburg and a very dear friend and aunt, Clara Jennings of Kilmarnock and other loved family members.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Woodall-Tharp Funeral Chapel with Dr. William T. Vest officiating. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park with military honors by American Legion Post #16.

Albert Mallet, Sr.
Albert Mallet Sr. passed from laborer into eternal rest on Friday, Dec. 4, 1998 in Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Mallet was born, Jan. 13, 1922 to the late Alex Mallet and Georgia Adams of Miss. He was preceded in death by his wife Josephine Peters Mallet. During World War II, Mallet served with pride and distinction. He was a retired employee of F. L. Showalter with more than 40 years of service.
He is survived by a son, Albert Mallet, Jr. and his wife, Barbara Morris Mallet and their children and grandchildren; his daughter Brenda Mallet Farmer and her husband James Walter Farmer and their children and grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Julia Smith of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Martha Molette and husband Edmon and family; Mrs. Marguerite Abbitt and husband Charlie; Eight grandchildren; James Farmer, Robert Farmer, Shawn Mallet, Aisha Mallet, Rhonda Withers, Jacqueline Farmer, Dominic Mallet, Roderick Farmer, and 12 great-grandchildren; Aaron Mallet, Tiffany Withers, Anthony Mallet, Timothy Withers, Shannon Farmer, Trevin Withers, Ashley Farmer, Aaron Mallet, Tarique Withers, Khaletia Scales, Karmoren Farmer, Adrian Mallet and a host of friends.

Marion Tunstall Massie
Marion Redd Tunstall Massie, 78, of Roseland, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998 at Holly Manor in Farmville.
Born in Nelson County, Dec. 24, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Eugene Redd and Marie Gantt Redd. She was preceded in death by her husband, William M. Tunstall Jr. Marion was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, retired from Virginia Blue Ridge Railroad and was an active member of the Roseland Rescue Squad Auxiliary for many years.
Survivors include a son, William Massie Tunstall III and wife, Janet of Roseland; a daughter, Sarah T. Hodges and husband, Ted of Farmville; one sister, Juliet R. Wynne of Richmond and three granddaughters, Neely Tunstall, Elizabeth and Kyle Hodges.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 1998 at Grace Episcopal Church in Massies Mill by the Rev. Craig P. Fickling and the Rev. Robert Davenport with burial in Jonesboro Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Woody Belcher, David Giles, Jackie Giles, Kenny Herring, Richard Payne and Kenneth Payne. Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Giles, Beirne Rucker and Marion s granddaughters.

HAMPTON Nealy Esther Bryant Oliver, 85, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998.
Born in Buckingham County, she had been a Hampton resident for 37 years where she retired from Leggett Department Store. Mrs. Oliver was a member of First United Methodist Church, Fox Hill, the Edith Spencer Class and the Westly Circle. She was a charter member of Peakland Methodist and former member of First United Methodist Church of Lynchburg.
Mrs. Oliver was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Oliver Sr.
She is survived by her sons, George H. Oliver Jr. and his wife, Patricia of Las Vegas, Nev. and Kenneth L. Oliver and his wife, Frances of Gloucester; her brothers, Claude T. Bryant and Bernard N. Bryant both of Lynchburg; her sisters, Mrs. Hubert (Lula) Nash and Mrs. R. Gordon (Lila) Candler both of Lynchburg; her grandchildren, Brian H. Oliver, Elaine M. Oliver and Sarah A. Oliver and many nieces and nephews.

Orissa Hunt Rundle, 90, of Forest, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at Campbell Rest Home, Bedford.
She was born in Elmira, N.Y. on Oct. 23, 1908, a daughter of the late Albert Hunt and Arcelia Wildley Hunt. She was a retired teacher from Forks Township, Pa. Public School System and a member of Zion United Methodist Church, Penargyl, Pa.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Melburn Rundle; two brothers, Lewis Hunt and Fred Hunt; and a grandson, Craig A. Bellis.
She is survived by a son, Richard Rundle and his wife, Cynthia of Forest; two daughters, Doris Salter and her husband, Edward of Gulf Breeze, Fla. and Shirley Ambrose of Ashburn; nine grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

Lorene Sale Sparks, 78, of Lynchburg, died Friday, December 4, 1998 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of Garland O. Sparks.
Mrs. Sparks was born March 12, 1920 in Lynchburg, daughter of the late Clarence B. Sale and the late Pearl Turner Sale. She was a retired librarian with Lynchburg College and a member of Fort Hill United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, John G. Sparks of Lynchburg; a daughter, Sandra S. Turner of Rustburg; two sisters, Jean Burnette of Lynchburg and Betty Sparks of Florence, S.C.; four grandsons, Robert G. Turner, Jr., Jeffrey S. Turner, Andrew G. Turner, Jonathan G. Sparks, and one great grandson, Samuel E. Turner.

Margaret Atchison Van Heuckeroth
Margaret Mary Atchison Van Heuckeroth, 84, of Alexandria, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Arthur William Van Heuckeroth.
Born in Washington, D.C., Jan. 23, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Bernard Atchison and Margaret McMahon Atchison. She was a member of St. Mary s Catholic Church in Alexandria and a former employee of the National Bureau of Standards.
She is survived by a daughter, Gretchen Morris and her husband, George of Lynchburg; two brothers, Bernard J. Atchison of Rockville, Md. and Lewis F. Atchison Sr. of Alexandria; three grandchildren, Kelly McMahon Morris, Arthur Graham Morris and Michael Patrick Morris all of Alexandria; a niece, Sue Whisenant of Winter Springs, Fla. and a nephew, Lewis F. Atchison of Mobile, Ala.
